Reviews of Kennedy Park
Lovely view 😍 Walk was a bit shorter than expected and the stairs down to the beach was closed unfortunately. Nice park with a nice playground which my 9yr old daughter enjoyed
A fantastic and cool park with large space for dogs to roam and awesome views.
Beautiful place, tour guides were friendly. Was tricky to see where the tunnel tour started from. Great views
It’s fairly good but not recommended as stairs towards beach is closed and to access beach you need to drive to Castor bay reserve, parking is extremely limited and beach is over crowded. It’s good for half day or few hours trip.
Excelent park for children to play, dogs to run and go for a swim, and families to spend the day or do a picnic.
The park has a historic feel and the battery towers are well preserved.
Caution: The beach is currently closed due to flooding and ground slipping risk.
Literally only good if you want to exhaust yourself on the stairs and like a beach with rocks. Not for swimming in my honest opinion. Great exercise spot though 😂 just be prepared for endless stairs. Good view at the top.
A lovely hidden gem in the north shore. Dogs friendly kids are optional ( JOKES ) Amazing views of Rangitoto, great steps exercise. Pack a lunch in sunny day quick swim and bring your rubbish back, great spot for a bit of city break.
They need to do some maintenance. It is very unique place and very nice. We went there but the track was closed. I think because of how dangerous atm but I wish it could have been maintenance more than this. It is very beautiful place and hold many memories and history.
Kennedy Memorial Park can be accessed from the Beach Road, Castor Bay in the North Shore of Auckland NZ. It is named to commemorate the late US President J.F. Kennedy. It is a WWII historic building and is suitable for small group picnics and a very popular venue for children’s birthday parties. The historical tunnels are open for guided tours on the second Sunday of each month, between 11.00 AM and 2.00 PM. Military Historian volunteers will guide you through the tunnels and explain the background to each feature. There are pictorial displays to support the information on the guns and you will learn about one of the finest examples of military defensive camouflage still extant today.
History of this park goes back to WWII where the gun emplacements and tunnels you now see are the remnants of a 6-inch gun battery constructed during 1941 and 1942 as part of Auckland's World War II defenses. Castor Bay was one of three-gun batteries whose purpose was to defend the northern approaches to the Rangitoto Channel, the others were at Whangaparaoa and Motutapu.
Apart from the WWII history, Kennedy Park is very popular because of its long, steep wooden staircase leading to the beach below. It is a great place to practice climbing steep staircases such as Devils staircase in the Tongariro alpine track. You will be challenged to descend and ascend a steep short span of roughly about 150 steep steps in 300 meters. The view from the top of the staircase over the Rangitoto island and the surrounding sea is magnificent!!
Beautiful and stunning place 😍
A lovely hidden gem in the north shore. The place is visited by a few people to exercise, bring kids and dogs to explore. Amazing views, great space for a bit of a escape during the week
Kennedy Park is a place full of history. We went there for only a short period of time as it rained so heavily when we arrived there on 3/2/2024.
We will definitely visit it again in the near future.
Large enough to fly a kite ride a bike or get some good old fitness in whilst taking a pause in remembrance to history tunnels and gun placements toilets and play areas for kids. Panoramic views of gulf and access to beach via Kennedy stairs.even have a petonque area some sort of bowling activity.
Multiple ways to get here either from Castor Bay beach area or one of the access points (including the main entrance) on Beach Road.
Really large park with beautiful views of the Hauraki Gulf along the edge of the park. There is a walkway (Kennedy Park Walkway) that joins the park to Castor Bay beach area. The playground is near the parking lot and there is a path from the parking area to the battery where you can see the gun emplacements. Following the path further leads you to a staircase which goes down to the beach and is used by people for exercise. There are also other WWII facilities in the area.
Not much tree cover in the park so not ideal for really hot sunny days. It does have a lot of open space so nice for a run around.
A refreshing view to walk around. It has a touch of our New Zealand history used after the start of World War II. This battery bay was part of a nationwide coastal defence system and played a key part in Auckland’s WWII Defences.
Revisited this nice park after years. Great views and kind people you can expect in this neighborhood.
The lookout is great. Gives you a wide spacious view of the sea. Awesome spot to get good silhouette of Rangitoto. The park is clean and wide too. The pillboxes where they used to install guns are amazing historical landmarks. This is the place where you will find the "stairs of doom." Sometimes you will find people running up and down the stairs as a part of their workout program. It's quite a climb that stairs though.
The sea shore is not so good. Stay on the elevated part, I would say.
Update - I also Watched American Magic (USA) and Prada (Italy) Dual it out on the 3th Jan, the final 2 races that America Magic Lost. The weather was much better. Was a good place to watch the 3rd Day of the Prada Cup leading up to the America's Cup. Jan 2021 - 1st race (which became abandoned through lack of wind - ahh and followed by a squall). Some spectator boats, Rangitoto in the B-Ground. The Boats Racing are Prada (Italy) and Ineos (UK).
A great place where you can have a nice walk at the beach, take your kids to the playground or play some petanque with your friends and family.
The beach is great, and dogs are allowed. There are many steps to climb going down onto the beach and pretty gruelling climbing back up to the top!! Beach is wonderful for walking dogs!!
The staircase of doom - a Bali like steep staircase by the seaside. This must be auckland's worst kept secret, a good getaway from the overcrowded takapuna beach. Many fitness enthusiast loves to run up and down the stairs... so, if u feel like a leg day, time to take the challenge.
Small and beautiful park, love the access to one of the most clean and beautiful beaches in Auckland.
Nice view of Rangitoto. The stairs to the beach can be used as a workout exercise
Nice place to run around with the kids. Great playground. And the view is amazing. If you’re looking for a challenge, see how many times you can get up and down the staircase!
We went on the guided tour of the WW2 tunnels (2nd Sunday of the month). Very informative. Friendly tour guide
A good place to get some fresh air and very nice to find something that hasn't been spoilt over the past 50 years.
Hidden Gem, very quite beautiful beach, love to visit sometimes, but you can't go into the sea coz water is full with lot of dirt.
Lovely park, heaps of cool things to see
The stairs to the beach or better known as “The Stairs of Doom” a popular attraction, other than the amazing view, have been closed since April 2017 due to a slip in the cliff side. It seems that the cost to repair will be extensive ($500k) so it’s unlike they will be repaired anytime soon.
Beautiful beach. Love the stairs of doom for cardio. Love the history about the park. Lovely little play area for kids.
Very beautiful and quiet beach, good for exercise up and down stairs
Tough climb back up the gazillion steps but awesome spot. Remember that it is a 24/7 DOG beach.
Great park, with the beach if you follow the stairs down. Fantastic view. Good for walk, Natural beauty. Kids playgroud as well.
Great playground, good rope climbing setup and large sandpit.
Celebrating Christmas morning watching the sun rise. Very special place 🥰
Amazing gun defence and tunnel system installed in 1940. Quite a bit of history and some clever thinking by the War Office/ MoD about the barracks.
The stairs to the beach are closed, Rotary Club could do with some support to relocate it and make it available again.
Best beach to bring the doggos. Completely off leash all year round. Good for swimming at high tide, there's exposed reef on low tide. Pick up your doggo poo chur.
The water is clear and a good place to walk your dog
Love this place so much, almost like a private beach. Even my husband likes it and he doesn't like much lol
Paradisiac place. get ready to sunbathe and go up and down a staircase with a one million dollar view :)
A very nice park to sit there for lunch or afternoon tea. Always something to look at. Weather it's the clouds, birds or dog walkers.
Great lil spot for family time. Park area is amazingly huge. Kids love it here. Can bring your dogs here for a quick stroll. Great lil spot for family and friends, the views are 👌
Not too many people, so you can enjoy your own peaceful moment
Cliff view is very amazing, peaceful park
Great views.. great to take the dogs there too.. park well maintained.
Kennedy park is a nice and decent sized park in the close proximity to Castor Bay.
There are a couple of walkways which join the coastal walkway and one can easily get down to the beach from this park.
Children's play area has well maintained rides and fun activities.
The location is nice and handy.
Access to the park is easier by car instead of public transport.
Ample car parking is available on the area which makes for a comfortable outing.
Highly recommended for half a day out with kids.
Nice playpark, with a World War II wartime defense history👌
such a beautiful place, unfortunately closed when i went because of the cyclone
Beautiful place and view from the top of the beach.
New, safe stairs down to beach at the base of the cliffs. Sandstone reef is exposed at half tide so only good swimming at full tide but the place is good fun and the climb back up the stairs is good for the soul and the heart. Great views and a remarkable history here.
It's a nice park to walk and have some fresh air while looking far to the sea.
Great place to see the rise of tonight's Supermoon along with lots of others!
Very nice park! First time there, what a beautiful surprise! A large green area and a long walk along the cliff. And if you want to stay fit nothing better than a run on the beach after a 142 steps staircase. But remember you have to climb it back 😁😁😁
park itself is nice
BUT
dog droppings everywhere on the grass
do dog owners not care?
or does council not clean?
Great place for walking out dogs from Lil Luka dog walks.
A wonderful icon of the North Shore, Kennedy park has both nature and historic aspects. WWII gun turrets and military tunnels are viewable. This is a great place to picnic and play lawn soccer. Dogs are allowed on leash, and now that the stairs have been repaired the dogs are allowed off leash on the beautiful secluded beach below. Warning there are a lot of stairs you need to be fit to walk down and even fitter to walk up.
Possibly the best toddler slide on the Shore, enclosed in an awesome little rock wall. Miniature swings and sand play area. Might also have the smoothest roundabout on the Shore as well. Lovely big grassy area too. Not fenced but the various walls make toddler control quite easy. Toilet on site.
Good park, playground with at the end of the park there is a long and scenic trail along the cliff plus you can get to Castor Bay Beach from a trail there.
Nice park with some war related history.
Great spot with views of North shore . It is closed off currently due to maintenance on steps...opening soon. Good grass to walk. Has underground tunnels you can visit 2nd Sunday of month...take torch and gold coin entry. Very good playground for kids. Toilets on site. Place lots of history with old war buildings.
Gorgeous place. My favourite shrine. Not the best for swimming às there are a lot of rocks but great for a short walk with a friend or dog.
Nice beach, stairs access. Went there on the 5 March 2021 to get high ground for the Tsunami Warning. After the 8.1 earthquake in the early hours of 5/3/2021. Nice scenery during the high ground.
WW2 gun positions and tunnels. Beautiful walking trail.
An all day dog beach throughout all seasons gives this place my 5 star rating. The stairs are immense and quite a workout. Your legs will be jelly after a few rounds. At high tide the beach can be completely underwater but at other times you can rock scramble to Castor Bay.
Wicked little bit of history tucked away
A $40 manicure is too suitable
AN AMAZING open spaced park/reserve with two diffrent types of playgrounds offering a Lil more variety then just a single playground to adventure on.
The home of the world famous Kennedy stairs where you will find heaps of trainers and fit individuals running there laps for advanced stair running training.
Great for kids of all ages as there's heaps of open space ro throw the ball or Frisbee.
Also, attached to a off the lead dog park.
An reasonable amount of free parking and a public usually clean toilet.
Nice park with great sea views.
There's a big play ground for the kids.
Great place to improve your fitness by walking or running up and down the stairs to the beach below.
Interesting to see the old military installation and munition tunnels.
Beautiful place. Very peaceful.
Nice Park. Great views. Good for family gatherings and birthday celebrations. Has a playground.
Such a cool place. I like walking down the long staircase down the cliff face to the pretty beach. I saw people swimming and fishing there today while I was hunting for sea glass.
Lovely spot with beautiful views over the harbour.
As well as the public toilet, I was impressed to see council have added 2 portable toilets for the Americas Cup viewers. Thank you Auckland Council.
A lovely park and children's playground. Lots of steps down to the beach. Lovely to have a dog friendly beach. Low tide meant there was little water for swimming.
Such a beautiful place. Great spot for pictures with a stunning view 😍 There's a playground at the top, good parking and toilets.
It is so lovely here, steps to run up and down if you want, WW11 tunnels with an interesting guide. Great play ground for children, shade of lovely pohutakawa trees.
Really interesting little park with some cool gun replacements and history.
Picturesque park overlooking Castor Bay. The park itself holds well preserved and maintained WWII buildings and fortifications with some excellent information boards as you walk the park.
There are normally stairs down to the beach and these are frequented by exercise fanatics, however recent bad weather has made these unavailable following slip damage with no known timeline as to their return.
Great bit of NZ history. The tunnels are closed to the public, but accessible with a guided tour. Every second Sunday of the month tours occur (11am-1pm)
My Grandsons 12th birthday. He loved it! Some of the rides were unavailable due to rain but it cleared in the afternoon. Queues were short and the virtual room is a fantastic addition.
Such a good view and walk!
Gorgeous spot for a doggo walk
Cool walk with stunning views. Interesting to see the tunnels. The stairs are a great workout but it also seems very private
So the story was really good, had alot of depth even though she's a bad story teller... I enjoyed the part where she talked about the mosquitoes and no one listened. Overall I give it 4 out of 5 stars THE END.
Great cliff top walks.
Hidden gem 💎 of a park
Beautiful views from the grass, park for the kids, Great all year round off leash dog beach and grass. Lots of steps down to the beach if you want a work out.
Kids love it. Wind always blowing here though
A neat little park with a small children's playground , grassed open spaces and a walk way with views out over the fenced cliff face. Ww2 remnants of conctete lookout . Carparking a toilets.
Mix of different places from great children's playground, to war historic fixtures to cultural historical aspects. Very sadly steps to beach below are in disrepair and unusable.
Great park with playground, rich in military history(wwii), beautiful views, access to infamous 'stairs of doom' which leads to Castor Bay, one of our favourite beaches for photos!
If you don't live nearby, this one will have passed you by. A long field of grass above the sparkling Hauraki with beautiful views, and usually a long staircase down to the beach which periodically gets ruined by landslides (which it currently is, as of Autumn '18). But...you do get to see the remains of wartime Auckland scattered about, which is worth the stop. The cute 30's house is actually a disguised concrete observation bunker (you can rent it if you're into DooWoop Era parties), there are gun emplacements for the kids to explore, and various concrete things lying around. Lots of info boards for the olds, and plenty to clamber on for the young. AND a playground too! Popular with the petanque crowd - there's a club there you can join. Recommended if you're wandering down the coast road on the way to lunch in one of the Bays...
Very disappointed the steps are not fixed. I visit Castor Bay regularly and loved the challenge of walking reps on the steps. Please please rebuild them at user's risk to use.
Great place for kids to learn some history . Stairs to beach great for the cardio and can take dog down there all year round
Awesome park for dogs, plus the stairs to exercise on and a good off-leash dog beach down the bottom!
Awesome beach and park. Great view of the ocean, cool playground for the kiddos to play in and a decent size grass area for the dogs.
The stairway is damaged, but you can still see the sea view from the bleachers.
It's such a nice place to get away from all the nonsense in life. Quiet and calming vibes. Definitely visiting again
Great playground and park. Also Kennedy Patanque Club Headquarters and tunnels built with guns to protect our shores 2nd. World war
Playground for adults and the very young has a rope hammock extra large didn't explore much of it but looks like other people like walking their dogs
Great park for kids and adults alike. Good kids play ground with lots if open spaces for ball games or picnics
It’s within Auckland city. Choose a time during sunset- and take a walk upto cliff stair case . It will be one of the precious moments.
Beautiful views if the ocean. Lovely beach although lots of steps to the beach
Great luttle coastal Park complete with playground, toilets, war history, short coastal walk. Petanque court, and grass
Choice park to walk your dog or dogs lovely views, cool little playground,& ww2 bunkers quite interesting, anyways 5 stars its Awsome 😎
Can see for miles on a good day ola gun turrets
Great dog friendly park with beach access
The stairs down to the beach are now finnished and have reopened. Amazing views and a bit of a workout, but so worth it.
Love this place. Great to walk the dogs. Excellent play area and for picnic. Clean toilets
Good workout stairs 👍🏻
Great place for a workouts and a nice dip.
313 steps to the beach is a great cardio workout.
Great open space - fun playground. Even a petanque space. But when will the staircase access to the beach be reopened?!
Great place to walk with kids, some areas under construction though but overall good!
The stairs to the beach are closed and no mention of this anywhere really
Great beach for dogs, very steep stair case definitely gets the blood going.
Good view. Just be careful the ramp is getting rebuilt there. But love it.
Great place for a brake from the city
Great reserve. The stairs were awesome for fitness training until they were washed away in a storm.
It is an interesting place to visit on Auckland North Shore The small park is very interesting with alot of steps down to a fantastic beach
Great Park to take the kids with a playground, toilets and access to the beach down a cliff face staircase.
But of history. Bit of playground for kids. Bit of nice beach walking. Nice place overall.
Lovely park. Has a good playground and beautiful view beach.
Good place for kids. Lots of room to play, and a walkway down to the beach which is a nice bonus.
Used take grandchildren there.lovely p/ground, good parking, lovely grounds and views.
Excellent place with awesome views
Nice dog friendly park which has World War 2 tunnels and tour the second Sunday of every month.
Beautiful park and beach. Lots of people doing exercise on the stairs.
Great views, nice playground, good walk to Castor Bay pit about the collapsed staircase
Short walk, good views, parking, toilets and kids playing area.
Your through the tunnels was really interesting. Well worth the time, we are so lucky to have the guides.
Great views over the gulf, fun park for the kids, and a bit of a history lesson thrown in!
A spacious well maintained park with cliffside steps down to the secluded beach
Great views, nice little building for functions. Could use some updated equipment for such a large space
Fantastic location and views, excellent playground, and a hall available to book for family events.
Amazing
Awesome stairs.. even better backdrop and fantastic beach
Reasonable large in size. Great place to do exercise. Easy access to beach.
My no 1 favorite spot to take my papi around... Please fix the steps which haven't been accessible for a while.
Amazing view from this park, if you live in Aukland you must see this place.
Great park.
Amazing views
Historical. Good for dogs.
The stairs to the beach are a thing to experience. The views are espectacular, specially at dawn or dusk.
Amazing view, nice hike. Worth visiting.
