A wonderful campsite. We were only there for 1 night but would’ve loved to have stayed on. The staff were so welcoming and friendly, excellent customer service. The camp is beautifully set out and well maintained. The bathroom and kitchen facilities are basic but very clean and accessible. The pools are a real highlight and again, this public area is well kept and clean. I’d definitely recommend staying here if anyone is in the area. We were visiting Hobbiton and it was about a 15 minute drive so very convenient. 10/10!

What a great find. 3 adults and our baby for only $18 to swim in the massive pool and enjoy a nice hot soak in the Real hot pool. The slide into the pool is great fun and was well used by us and all the others here on the day. Brought back our youth. Everything is tidy and we will bring lunch to enjoy a day here next time as there is a beautiful area for this away from the pool. Love it

I can tell the owner put a lot of effort in this place and all the details really impressed me. I have to write an honest to show my appreciation. The room is very tidy and clean. The hot springs are amazing and I will definitely come back for more holidays!!!!

We only did the pools, and oh boy what a hidden gem! Do yourself a favor and go to the private hot pool, it's a beautiful pool and is absolutely relaxing. 100/10 would recommend it to anyone!!

Pack a picnic and spend the day out. It's a beautiful setting for a family day out and the pools are great. Definitely recommend the pools and the camp-site looked great too.

Stayed for a week. Didn't see anyone clean the toilets or showers it was full of leaves and dead insects everyday. Showers were limited in number for a site that large so often had to wait. Hot pools were nice and warm but worn from the minerals. Close to Matamata if you want a 7k walk of cycle to a shop. Gardens were well kept and had lovely roses.

Great place, great pool and a refreshing temp this time of year. We were a little late checking out but they were all good.

Great experience in a very nice location. Pools were the highlight; especially the private outdoor pool. Enjoyed the facilities and appreciated the help Brian was in reception. Overall, an experience to remember and we look forward to being back again soon.

Nice quiet site dog friendly a big plus 👍 unfortunately the facilities eg, showers/toilets were a bit dated cleanliness not great 😵 really needs work done / updating etc the trees were a bit over hanging worried about the falling branches 😳 🤔 but at least we had no unruly campers for a change 😉

No, I'm not going to be nice and fluffy. The place is stuck in the 1970's. There is bare concrete everywhere, piping and chain link fencing. A lot of the concrete is cracked and pitted including in the pools. Currently the large pool is being painted, but that's it, they aren't repairing or resurfacing the pool, just giving it a lick of paint to cover it up

Lovely service, and such clean facilities! Usually some rural hotpools aren't as well kept, toilets especially! Luckily here everything was so nice, toilets were tidy and no unpleasant smells. We hired the bbq and used the picnic tables up above the pools for the Kai, gave us a good view of the pool for the kids. Didn't try out the ramaroa hot pool, but will defs be back to try it out! Bit of a drive, but an awesome day spent with whaanau 👍🏽

Nice clean facilities although dated it provides what you need. The pools are nice but also dated, but hey its free when you camp which is great. Awesome that it's pet friendly too. There's a more pristine pool that comes at an additional cost which we didn't try, but it looks nice

We might have picked the wrong day to visit and we're getting a bit older and less tolerant but we picked a day when there was a big group of kids. This looks like a great place for families with three pools in an outdoor uncovered area. There is a large pool for splashing and jumping in and then two progressively smaller ones. The hottest is only waist deep when sitting and has signs for peaceful sitting and soaking which did not happen with the large group of kids. The price was great, and there were also private pools which we didnt try because you really need to book in advance.

Very friendly greeting and a good tourist cabin with everything I needed for the night. Had a great sleep as was up early to get to Matamata Market by 6am as I'm a stallholder. Hot pools for the bones if needed. Definitely child friendly also.

Nice atmosphere 2 different options of pools, one chlorinated and one natural springs.

The outside hot pools area nice 39 or 37 degrees. If you're going by yourself though (as I was) you can't rent a private spa due to a change in regulations after someone drowned... OSH gone mad as usual. Enjoy!

Imagine being able to relax in either of 4 different pools, regulated to temperatures of Tepid, 37 degrees, 39 degrees or the private 40 degree set in a natural area. The Opal hotsprings has all these, as well as family spa rooms also. Very clean and tidy facility, which boasts of many accommodation rooms and units, let alone all the sites for caravan etc. All this within an easy 15 minutes of the tourist town of Matamata.

Called ahead to ask for prices and was greeted by Vanessa. Phone mannerism was great. The pool (cold and hot) was AMAZING, heaps of space for kids to run around and had two toilets for convenience. Absolutely bringing my nieces/ family next time. Worth every cent x HIGHLY recommend

My 91 year old Mother not only enjoyed the beautiful Mineral Pools but loved the ambience of the surroundings. The staff are AMAZING!!!! My Mother and I were given a beautiful Easter Egg package with a lovely chortle "Easter is not just for kids". Thank you

Really, 3.5 stars but closer to 4 than 3. Went here with family to have a last camp before things got too cold. Was a nice enough site with alright facilities but really boosted up by the pool. The shower is more a do not try as I could get more flow by putting a hole in a bucket and hanging it from a tree. Thankfukly we were there 3 nights so I could justify swimming each day and having a shower when I got home. We were put in a nice corner next to some units which was nice and private with enough room for our 5 large tents and one big caravan which was a plus! Close to walks/golf course and the Firth museum which is a bonus. Just do not expect to get a nice shower at all.

Awesome place thanks, tidy camp grounds and facilities, hot pools was a great added bonus of staying here. Laundry facilities are great, kitchen is small but has the basics if needed. We stayed at an unpowered site, used our own cooking gear.

We love the private pool down by the river... a few stairs to negotiate but worth the effort. $10ea for half an hour of blissful privacy is good value for my money.

We loved this place. Easy jumping off point for soooooo many attractions. Facilities were clean and tidy and well equipped and staff were super friendly and helpful. Pool and thermal pools were an added bonus. Not 5 stars because we had to rent the bbq but it did come with all utensils and cleaning supplies. Can't wait to go back!

We arrived late on a Sunday night after a big day and upgraded to a motel room here. The room was clean and comfortable. The park is a few kilometres from the town, but there's plenty of restaurants available. In the morning we went for a dip in the hot springs pool alone and it was just wonderful!

Beautiful spot. Not thrle first time there...wont be the last. Only slight issue were the neighbours in the other rooms not considering they had neighbours,allowing the childre to run up and down the veranada etc.

The people who run this place are so cool. Great place to chill winter and summer

This could be such a beautiful park but the standard of the facilities are letting it down. The ladies toilet floor for example has what looks like 5 years of dirt caked on it. Everything needs a good going over. The grounds are very nice and the springs are a bonus.

We camped out in one of the kitchen cabins for the night. I needed a good neck massage and found a water blast jet that took care of that. We spent 2 days swimming in the pools and cooking stuff in our cabin. One of the best short breaks we've had as a family. Bring the kids, spend a day, spend a week, totally recommended.

This was the first time I had ever been to opal hot springs and the lady at the front desk was amazing as traffic was a bit hectic and we were a bit late for out booking, the pool itself was like walking into another world with sounds of the waterfall, birds, I felt like I just walked into a piece of paradise. Then when I got into the water the the soft airbibbles that came up out of the pool on places made my body feel like it was being re-energized, a place I would gladly recommend.

The owners were magnificent during my stay, I fully recommend a visit and holiday there.

Lovely place to stay. Very peaceful . Pools were just the right temperatures. Nice bike trails not far from park.

Very laid back however, there are three different pools to swim or laze in. The smaller one at the end attracted my attention with water gushing out of what looked like a water pipe. The temperature suited as it was hot enough without being unbearable and mineral!! Leaves one feeling so good. Thanks to those operating the services, the lady who attended to a small group of us, was helpful & answered all my questions eventually saying check it out I'm sure you'll enjoy the pools :)

Nice basic camp. The kitchen has two stoves, both were busy. We didn’t fix dinner until 9:00. Ladies shower had very low water pressure - was small and had just two stalls. Tent sites are nice, the whole place is nice and quiet. The swim pool and soaking pools are a definite plus.

Nice place it’s close to the city and hobbiton. The walls of the room are a bit thin so you can hear everything. It’s getting also a bit cold during the night, there was no heater in the room. And for the blankets you need to pay extra. Pool is good and the hot spring as well.

Stayed for 4 days in May 20. Very clean, nice well-kept place. Emptied our bin daily and kept us supplied with clean towels etc. We had a motel unit. 3 bedrooms, could have fitted 2 couples and 2 singles in. Everything laid on, including full kitchen utensils and even an electric fry pan. Only downsides were pathetic lighting and a heater that didn't keep up. Hot pools are so nice. Ramoana pool is private and costs 20 bucks for a good long soak, absolutely wonderful for an end of day recoup. Will be back!

Three dutch ladies , FBI (Francien Bea and Irene) stayed here for three night . We had a wonderful time. Staff is wonderful and the pools are lovely. The three bedroom motel was big enough for us . We left with not wanting to leave. If you stay here do not go to the Royal Thai restaurant in Matamata the meal there was awful and small. But our stay at Opal Hot springs was fantastic The beds were so comfortable we slept peaceful every night

The campsite is a nice place to stay with a little playground, hot pools, a little kitchen and a very nice lady at the front desk. Everything is a bit old but we generally liked the place. Just one thing: please invest in new washing machines and dryers! Our cloth were still wet and full of washing powder, something what never happened at any holiday park laundry before.

All the rooms had very comfortable beds with clean sheets. Very quiet area and the hot pools were free and nice. I would definitely stay there again. Good pricing as well.

Good priced camp just out of town. Old facilities that could have been cleaner but lovely area. The large pool looked great fun for the ones who used it. Handy to have small shop at reception.

whats not to love about an old school Kiwi camping ground, set in a lovely undulating rural spot, with big swim pool , plus the hot pools, you get the vibe that generations of familys have made great memories here, and at an affordable price.

We have stayed here twice now and both times have been impressed by the friendly staff, spotless rooms and clean perfectly heated pools. Very reasonably priced. We have stayed in the standard cabin which is absolutely lovely if your on a budget. This time we stayed in the studio motel. Lovely and close to the pool pretty much at the front door. Bed is very big and comfy everything is super clean. We love it and plan to have weekends there often. Perfect if you have little ones plus Matamata has nice eateries so can head to dinner easily. Nice scenic drive travelling from Auckland. Thanks Opal hotsprings for having us.

The owners are amazing and really helpful. Genuinely nice people that are working really hard to make the place fantastic. Even though the facilities are a bit tired everything works well and you will not miss anything while staying here. When you stay at the park you have access to the pools free of charge which is awesome! Nice surroundings and beautiful garden work.

I went there to have a hot soak. It was tops. I will be going back but I will stay overnight next time and enjoy a couple of days in the pools. It is brilliant - try it some time, you will not be disappointed.

Nice camping site. A good kitchen, but the showers and toilets need updating. There is a good swimming and hot pools area, which can be used for free if staying at the campsite. Staff are very helpful and friendly.

We, along with 2 sets of friends stayed here for 3 days over a public holiday. We all had a lovely time in facilities that were good. The new owners are making great headway to make this a great family place to have a break. Having free access to pools was a bonus. We will come back with grandchildren

5plus stars for the whole experience, nice place nestled in nature, very friendly and welcoming staff, our accommodation was not flash, but very neat and worth the price. Can't complain about the pool, it wasn't the best of the best, but it was clean enough to swim in, and that's what counts. My kids loved the pool... Great holiday park. The location is very picturesque. It has all the expected amenities. The kitche and bathroom is very basic but functional. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We got our campervan bogged in the soft grass..all due to my poor map reading skills. The owners came and rescued us with the help of their tractor. Hard to beat help and service like that. I loved our stay there.

We are cycling so came to Opal hot springs & rented a cabin as the weather turned nasty. Lovely, clean, cabins, kitchen, lounge! Delightful hosts! Nice relaxing hot springs. Quiet, very well maintained holiday park. A definite must for the tired Traveller!

Great place for a relaxed family space. Good pool to play in the day and a great heated pool for the winter, . Men's toilet leaks a little which makes you feel bad if someone comes in after you, haha.

Beautiful place, within a great backdrop mountain view. During the summer the Opal in full with travelers from a far, half Olympic pool, with two heated pools that connect to the main pool, hotel rooms that cater from those from single to couples & family's, i always enjoy the quiet country life, my appreciation to the owners.

Very nice place to stay for a night, a weekend, or an extended holiday. I spent two night here in a tent while visiting Matamata and the Hobbiton. Pools are clean, as well as the showers and kitchen. If you're planning to do laundry, bear in mind that they warn there is iron in the water (so don't wash whites) and internet is not free. Campsites are well-maintained and level. Staff is also very friendly.

Decent pool with hot pool bath off the tourist trail. Spent an hour here on the way back to the airport and was a pleasant end to the holiday. Unpretentious, cheap and a decent small-town kiwi experience!

We had been told to avoid this park as it was scruffy and run down. However as inveterate hot pool hoppers we opted to spend a night and on a busy Queens birthday it was one of the few with a vacancy. We really did enjoy our night, certainly there was no overcrowding and the facilities were old but totally adequate. The pool complex appeared old but the hot pools were much enjoyed by many and the lap pool is obviously a popular training ground. The setting is beautiful and we really enjoyed our time there { the proprieter is most welcoming also!}

All in all a good camping place. Free hot swimming pool (3 different heats) But for Wifi you have to pay extra. The kitchen and showers were clean For some money you can wash and dry your stuff

Facilities are a bit old. There's 2 showers available, water pressure quite low. Good if you're not too fussy. Near hobbiton, some eateries nearby. Has 2 thermal pools, looks really old and dirty, but serves it's purpose, I used it and assumed the water's clean. 3 Laundry machines and 3 dryers are $4 each round.

Very kind receptionist, for the story, we had a problem with a reservation to the hobbiton movie set, and she really tried to help us through, by keep calling the i-site and when we finally had our reservation, she even huged us at the end because she was as happy as us and we past a wonderfull day there. About the hollyday park, facilities were clean, and the pool had the normal strange color of thermal water so no problem with it but one thing for sure, it was really delightful to stay in it after a long road.

We stayed h r for one night in a tent. It was a bit loud due to campers staying up late. The pool was lovely and the kitchen facilities were nice. It was fly season so there were hundreds of flies!!!

Cozy holiday park. Nice facilities but nothing that will wow you. Very friendly staff. Wifi cost extra. Good value either way. Would stay again. Incredibly close to Hobbiton AND a beautiful waterfall. I'd highly recommend waking up early and doing the short hike to the falls.

Totally relaxing place to recharge, a good hot swim then a deep comfy sleep waking to the sound of birds chirping and the river running nearby.

The present owners have done an awesome gob of upgrading the opal springs setting, from the garden's to the accommodation to the pools themselves. The environment it is fresh clean and really beautiful now. Thank you U 2 S & S;-)

The hot pools were okay. There was a large pool (somewhat warm - too cold for me - perfect for kids) and a smaller hot pool. However, the hot pool was extremely shallow so it was a bit uncomfortable to sit in. With about 6 people in this hot pool, it became a bit too crowded. We didn't stay in the holiday park.

Very clean and friendly helpful staff

Could do with a bit of maintenance but is a relatively cheap afternoon out with the kids. They should spend some time updating the private pool, not too much, it's nice and natural, but maybe a new statue... Do romance packages like Te aroha with candles and chocolate etc perhaps.....!

A great location just far enough out of Matamata but plenty to do in the surrounding areas also having its own hot pools is a huge benefit

A very good camp with free hot water pools. All on its place, showers unlimited, price reasonable. The only little issue is very poor GSM signal.

Visted the Opal Hot Springs after doing the K Gorge. Great way to relax. We booked a private pool Excellent valve for money. Very private and quiet.

Ok..... They have a private spa here that you must try. It is set in amongst tall impenetrable bamboo with a ruined rustic setting that has the effect of taking you back 50 years when life was simpler. Book in and go late..set a few tea candles and sip some bubbles out of a nice glass... Relax and be carried away by the sound of the tumbling water and ambience. Take a couple of treats it you and forget the world for an hour. You'll leave relaxed and happy. The owners operate this place and do everything they can to make your visit fantastic. They also have onsite accommodation if you want somewhere quiet to put your head down. Just up the road in matamata is the best chinese I've had in a long time. It's just before the roundabout next to the petrol station. Do try them both.

Excelente place!!! We have a short stay, to keep going so we can support other in our trip around New Zealand, but we 100% recommend and for sure we coming back for a long stay. Kia kaha every one

It is really a great stop to soil your camps with good facilities like kitchen, T.V room , washing machines and dryers as well. Additionally they have swimming pools with different temperatures. I would love to recommend this camping site. Thank you..!! Cheers.

As has been said - the pool complex is older, but the pools themselves were clean and had a good swim. The changing facilities however were awful. Rusty showers, filthy urinals and a "deposit" on the floor next to the toilet in the mens. Broken cistern and non working toilets in the womens. We only went for a swim, cannot comment on the accomodation options.

I rearly post about the places i stay but wow. The staff at opal hot springs are amazing. Friendly helpfull. The pools are great. Warm and fantastic on a chilly winter night thank you so much carroline and brian gor the fantastic stay will be back a gain and soon.

Haven't stayed at the holiday park, just used the pools. We used the private pool and it was lovely. The water comes up from the springs and fills the pool. The surrounding bamboo and the rushing stream make it feel private and secret.

Stayed there 2 nights. Pools are deep. 3 different temperatures to choose from. Great facilities, plenty of space. Kids loved it there.

Clean, well equipped and good value for money. We really enjoyed our stay. Kitchen was quite small and did tend to get crowded.

Very good location if you want to visit Hobiton Movie Set and need a place to stay over night. Only 20 mins driving. The other reason we stayed here is because they get a hot springs and a swimming pool (we got the value we want it). However, the rest of the facilties are just ok! Very small kitchen (a bit dirty too - the rubbish bin is very dirty and it attracts flies over). Only two showers per bathroom.

Awesome holiday spot for the family..if u love to be outdoors n enjoy the camping life this is a gd place to be. Owners r very friendly n helpful and always serve u with warmthness n smiles... will definitely come back for sure 👍🤩

Amazing. My partner and I booked a private sitting in the hot pool. Beautiful area, surrounded by bamboo trees. Dark with some light. Perfect relaxing area.

Amazing. Our unit was very well appointed, well maintained and spotless. The pools were sparkly clean. In fact, the whole place was well maintained & clean. Also only 10mins into Matamata.

Had to pay 20$ extra for bedding, was never told to us while booking, to be fair the rooms are tidy, facilities are also good, usage of the pool is great too.

This is our 'go to' place to relax. We love the Kiwiana style. But above all that is amazing staff. Especially Carroline, she is my sons star! My children feel safe and comfortable here. Good if you are headed to Hobitton on your next day. Probably back then, in the 90s this was top notch now it's just for fans of the vintage. On the other hand, Wes Anderson could probably shoot a movie here, everything looks really retro.

Awesome pools. Just be aware that there are no life guards. Not too deep, perfect for 10+ year olds. Fun slide into the pools.

Love staying in the family motel with our 2 teenagers. Plenty of room and home away from home. Hot pools are wonderful and only a stroll away.

What a little treasure, loved the quiet place and the pools though older were extremely clean and oh so lovely to just sit and relax, we had an awesome time and next time will stay in the campgrounds as well,

IT is an absolute classic, not flash but REAL. The private spa is well over a hundred years old, has history and is the most stylish I've ever seen. I go there frequently, even though it is almost 1 hour drive.
