Reviews of Tongariro Alpine Crossing - Mangatepopo Car Park
S.
A unique experience hiking amongst active volcanoes in what seems like another planet. Start early (7-8am) to avoid the crowds and heat, and take 2 litres of water. Start from the Mangatepopo Rd end. Allow 5-7 hrs to complete the 19.5km. The weather can change quickly and its always 5-15 degrees c. cooler at the top and usually windy.
E.
Did the walk yesterday with gorgeous weather, Mt. Taranaki could be seen along the way. Absolute stunning and unique volcanic landscape. Strongly recommend. Some level of fitness would be required as well as loads of water, check the weather before you go as up there it could be changeable and could be quite windy. Safety first folks!
J.
The first part of the track was really boring and the views were spectacular but the wind was way too strong at the top of the south crater when we were there, blowing at around 70-80ish km/h. We had to turn back which was really disappointing and didn’t get to see the lakes.
C.
This is a great day walk. Prepare well by getting your fitness levels up in advance, as you'll be on your feet for between 6-8 hours. You'll enjoy the experience far more if you're not gasping for air after the devil's staircase.
The landscape, views and scenery are spectacular, it has to be one of the walks for all kiwis or anyone visiting from overseas.
Y.
Me and my partner very enjoyed the trip except the knees
A.
Very good hike. Hiking stick recommended. First climbing part of steps little though. Upto tip or red crator tougher. Then enjoy till cross the blue lake. Down hill need stronger knee bone. Take extra care for knee jerk. The last bush jungle part seems never ending.
Overall good experience. You feel great once reach to ketetahi car park on time.
M.
Closest landscape I’ll get to Mars in New Zealand. Amazing scenery and views throughout the walk. Give it a whole day to take time to capture all the sights. Bring plenty of water and appropriate clothing. There were tourists in jeans and Jandals when we did it and apart from looking like muppets they struggled. Keep an eye on volcanic activity too. Just in case. Only downside for me was the thousands of others doing this the same day. Quota system would be good or alternatively to beat the crowds do a guided tour out of season.
J.
If you like walking for hours in the nature and if you are fit enough to walk these 20k in mountains then I Absolutely recommend this experience. We took the shuttle from Ketetahi car park (Tongariro Expeditions shuttle) at 6h30 and started to walk at 7h. We were lucky with the weather: mostly blue sky and no rain at all. The wind was strong which was a challenge at the top. If the weather is uncertain (very foggy, heavy rain, ...) don’t be stupid and try another day. Only the wind was a challenge for everyone up there, so don’t risk your life for a walk.
It took us 3h to reach the top and the view on mount Doom. Then 4 more hours to get to the end. You can count between 6h a 9h depending on your fitness level. But don’t rush it, the view at the top is extraordinary.
M.
Awesome experience visiting Tongariro. We did not end up doing full hike but we saw some great things even just a short walk from the car park. Must see for LOTR or The Hobbit fans. There are huts every so often you can stop at to sit. Not a lot of spots to park so it might fill up fast some days.
N.
One of the most stunning crossing we have done.
It’s a 6-8 hour walk and you have to have the right fitness level for it.
Definitely pick a day without clouds to enjoy the beautiful view if you are able to.
The last 5km can get pretty frustrating, because you can see the car park in the distance but It doesn’t really get closer 😅
The shuttle to the start of the crossing costs 30 dollars.(the only bad thing on the trip)
#.
Pretty nice and difficult walk, 19 Km which tracks mostly consisting of gravel pathways.
Would definitely recommend having some good/moderate fitness level with the right equipment. We had 2 bottles of water (1.5L) and that Just got us to the end.
Went on a really nice day, didn't need a jacket or anything since it was hot but still had it just in case.
V.
I love this track. The best I’ve ever been. Need to watch out for a bad weather such wind and rain as it can be caused a trauma. It took 6 hours to finish it, but slow walkers need to be ready for 7. Also, there is no water on the walk, you have to bring your own for the whole way. There are toilets every 1,5 hour , sometimes less. And , also, restricted parking for 4 hours.
S.
Amazing hike and views! As you can see, many are upset over the 4 hour parking limit on premise. We fortunately went during an off-weather day and no one was there so we were easily able to find parking. We spoke with one of the rangers and they were very amicable. He said the 4 hour limit is enforced but they don’t get upset over 30 mins here and there. Don’t abuse the system and be friendly and you should be fine. If you want to park for 4 hour, you SHOULD be able to make it to the red crater/emerald lakes and back within the 4 hours. Totally worth the trip - best hike in northern island of New Zealand!
H.
Rangers are very helpful and pleasant. Appropriately, they try to entice you away to other walks if the weather is coming in and the shuttles are cancelled. We made it to Emerald Lake lookout and back in just over 5 hours, which included a short lunch at the top. A good humoured National Park Ranger roams the peak to make sure everyone is safe. The ascent to the peak is the hardest but because of the spectacular views you forget about the effort. My wife and I are approaching 60 but are experienced walkers. Younger (but also fit) walkers can do it in less time although you would be pretty exhausted at the end. Be warned - it can be sunny at the start but a roaring blizzard by midday, and I mean a real blizzard, so be prepared.
G.
Yes, the car park has an annoying 4 hour limit and yes, thousands of tourists hike the Tongariro Crossing each day (no kidding - on a perfect day in March the ranger told us that they expect around 2,000 people on the track for that day) BUT the hike is amazing even then. If you have a good view: pay the shuttle and go for it. Great walk and the landscape is so vast, that the people on the track do not matter.
A.
I was blown away with this hike! We live in nz for 3+ years now and only ve done this hike a week ago and wanting to do it again now in winter and summer! You feel like on another planet and it bring so many emotions and inspirations as you walk it! Make sure to bring your cameras, water, food and good hicking shoes! Highly recommend to everyone, for people of all ages!
M.
Great hike, make sure you have good shoes! Amazing landscapes and terrain. Can be busy in parts so worth setting off early.
K.
Gorgeous scenery. Very difficult at the summit.
TWO RESCUES PER WEEK BY HELICOPTER !
And I can see why by the summit, it’s just crumbling dirt. So scary. There were 70kph gusts of wind here on the regular. The trail is well traveled so if you need help it’s available. Photos as of feb 2020
R.
A really great experience. Crossing the mountains from early morning into the early afternoon gave me great views and helped with the sometimes temperamental weather.
The walk on average is meant to take about 7-8 hours but you can easily spend a lot longer than this taking photos (and depending on your fitness level resting).
It was certainly not an easy undertaking but it is defiantly one you should make the effort to try. I can speak for all but in my opinion this is the best walk of the North Island
A.
Awesome! My best hike yet! Surreal surroundings, extreme wind and cold weather, so close to volcano activity. You feel tired yet excited. Would recommend this 7 hour trail to my friends. Did I mention Mount Doom!
Do take note start and end point is different location. Not recommended to drive, book a local bus.
L.
A must while in Tongariro or Taupo
We booked the shuttle bus to pick up us next morning but due to bad weather, however the day after we plan to travel to Wellington, so we can managed to go a short part of it, about 6km up to the Soda Spring, which was not challenging, however we enjoy the scenic around and along the way
Highly recommend
M.
Wonderful hike with beautiful views. Took about 6.5 hours. Probably about 2 hours of uphill climb so its good to be somewhat in shape. Listen to the signs. Wear sunscreen and bring about 2 liters of water pp. There are drop toilets about 2.5 kilometres.
M.
Amazing hike. Competed it in June. Pretty cold with light snow up the top. Well marked and maintained track. Highly recommend but take warm clothes in winter!!!
K.
We went in May and checked the weather report with the info desk at Whakapapa the day before. The guide at the info desk told us that a few "sights" beyond the emerald lakes at the half way point were closed, so it was better to walk to the halfway point, then walk back. This meant we didn't have to worry about getting a shuttle back from the other side. We also had all day parking. Make sure to bring enough food and water with you, as it's an all day hike. The winds change very quickly. We were wearing thermals and had to take them off during the hike, only for the wind to get blistering cold once you get over the ridge. BRING YOUR WINDBREAKER. And a fleece jacket. They will save you. It's a gruelling hike and our legs were dead on the way back, so be careful going down hill as that is the time you are most likely to injure yourself. BUT ITS SO WORTH IT. It was amazing. If you love volcanoes and stunning scenery and views, do it.
Z.
Stunning walk. Only made it as far as the south crater as the weather prevented going much further safely but it was still a magnificent walk. The devils staircase is not for the faint of heart but well worth it when you get to the top!!
S.
This is one of the best hikes in the World. But, be prepared for all weather conditions and dress appropriately. The best way to enjoy this hike is to take one of the accredited shuttle providers to the start of the track, that way you will have the knowledge that your vehicle is safe, and not to be worried about a 4 hour parking limit. By using a shuttle provider you are also contributing to the infrastructure and upkeep of this World Heritage Area as part of the concession goes back into the Park. Enjoy the hike, drink lots of water and take in the breathtaking scenery.
N.
Amazing...
Awesome...
wonderful...
Need 8 hours to finish the track. But it was worth it!
Definitely will be back again!
S.
Beautiful track, long but not too much, level gain very manageable. Only for people with good knees!
R.
Not much of a parking if you want to do the entire crossing as there is a 4 hr time limit. If you just plan to do a walk to and back in 4 hrs then you should consider parking here else shuttle is the best option.
A.
The challenge of the Tongariro crossing was phenomenal. I completed on a less ideal day with cold rain and gale force winds which meant extra strength and endurance was needed and I didn't get to see the unique landscapes due to fog but I intend to do again on a better day.
j.
Gutted we couldn’t do the full walk because of the snow ! But regardless we had a damn blast and was amazing to experience! Definitely recommend doing! Will be back in a few weeks in summer to complete the walk :)
P.
Very beautiful hike. Everyone should see this once in their lifetime.
Z.
Its allgood, would of been better on a sunny day. The start is a nice venture with great scenic views leading up to the summit. The staircase at the end is abit long but has great views. The whole walk took me 5 hr 30 min and was well worth the effort!
R.
We did the Tongariro Crossing in early February, starting at the Mangatepopo car park. There's a 4 hour parking limit so plan on taking a shuttle service either from the park village, or one of the towns in the area if you are doing the full hike. We were picked up right at our motel in Ohakune, delivered to the car park by 8 am, picked up at the finish and delivered back to the motel by 5 pm. Well worth the $50 cost and no worries about parking fines or getting injured trying to rush back. It also registers you with the shuttle service, so if for some reason you don't make it off the mountain by nightfall, they can at least start a search. This is a world class hike that needs time to enjoy the unique scenery and can't be appreciated if you are in a hurry to finish.
J.
This hike isn't for everyone but if you are fit the scenery is well worth it. Just make sure you do your research beforehand and come prepared. But man those last 3 hours walking downhill with the carpark in view is torture.
J.
We arrived by car to a car park from Mangatepopo hut side early morning around 7:30 worried how to organize our trip as we didn't want to do full crossing and take shuttles The parking guard marks your plate and you have 4 hours to leave or be towed away. Luckily we had enough time to walk all the way up to the crossing, turn back and stop by near the dropping springs and come back within the 4 h limit. Hike is not extremely demanding as there are lot of flat parts and not too steep. The path is very well maintained but be ready for big temperature difference on the summit, dress well.
M.
Awesome track - do not go unprepared!
D.
What can you say, the great Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This is the recommended starting point of the track, and it make sense for anyone who has completed the track. If you signed up with any shuttle service this is where you will be dropped off in the morning. A good shuttle service will give you a briefing and right advice on what to do and what to avoid. They will also pick you up from the other end when you are done. Be sure to sign up with an DOC acredited shuttle service for your safety.
M.
I have mixed feelings about this. The track is lovely. The toilets there are above average. There's water (not necessarily safe). There's excellent signage. And there's even places for busses to drop off passengers. On the flip side, there's a ridiculously long drive down a variable gravel road which is too narrow for the traffic that it handles, never enough parking spots, and no one pays attention to the parking signs, and why should they as there is no ramifications for parking illegally, even to blocking others in. So, it's okay if they were only catering to NZ, but this is a world renowned trail, but treated with half-ass services. Put in a sealed road or make the trail longer by putting in a lot where the service roads meet the "real" road. Put in a parking lot suitable for the load. Station an attendant there during busy times to assist people.
T.
As others have mentioned there is a 4 hour time limit, but the friendly attendant was pretty lax about when we actually had to return to the car; in his words 'enjoy your walk guys, no need to rush back down'. Great place for a tramp up into the national park, and 4 hours is enough time to get up the devils staircase and almost to the Emerald lakes.
T.
Start of the hike into the volcano. The car park includes 3 parts, including one dedicated to camper vans. It fills up very fast so it is advised to arrive very early. Make sure you hide valuables and lock your doors. Risks are limited but exist.
There is a washroom but they are not super clean.
A.
DOC recomends the staring point for Tongariro Alpine Crossing, because it is easier than start from other side, it has toilets & parking (max 4 hrs) facility before or after the hike.
a.
One of the best walks in NZ.
M.
Amazing view i love it.
L.
I have completed the crossing three times this year just to see how fit I was once in February and twice on the 3rd and 4th April.
The first was hard next two where easy. I am eighty so anyone can do it I have a total left knee replacement eight teen months ago. My wish is too complete the winter crossing, maybe next year.
K.
Use the toilets half an hour up the track and save a lot of waiting time. Bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Consider using a bus service, i did and rate it. Start as early as possible to make the most of the day.
P.
Need to start early like 6:30. Otherwise, you will have to park your car all the way down.
W.
Amazing place. Its a long 3hs hike just to get to the lagoons. 5 to 6 hs round trip. Have in mind that parking is only 4hs, though i didn't see anyone checking
J.
Start or finish of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. I parked my car in National Park, and caught a shuttle bus to and from the start/finish of the crossing.
But this carpark had easy access. It was on an unsealed road, and had enough space for plenty of car parks.
M.
As a car park this place is too small and limited and there are too many cars and there is to much dust. However, as the start or end of the Alpine crossing hike it is definitely worth it.
s.
Amazing trek with perfect weather
R.
Had done this walk 4 times so far . Never disappoints. Really impressive scenery. Highly recommend.
T.
Good parking lot. Solid ground, painted white lines, room for a car. They nailed it when building this car park. Oh yeah, there's also an epic hike out back!
A.
Is great that they change the rule for 4 hrs parking only, there are DOC to explain what to expect with the current weather and how far we should head off, as we have kid with us. Enough time to round trip to soda spring.
A.
The view is fantastic!! Must check the forecast first, be careful of the strong wind and fog, it's quite challenging but definitely worth it!! My favorite spot in North Island
S.
Best hike I’ve ever done! Did the whole crossing once, and halfway then back once.
c.
One of my favorite hiking trip can't believe it was in 2011
R.
Start the Tongariro crossing here! What an incredible hike! Car park can be busy in summer. Consider leaving the car at Whakapaka village and using the bus servive.
W.
Best hike ever. Best to read up about what to bring before you go on the trip. It took me 9hrs
C.
The best experience ever. The place is tidy and prepared to be done by people of different ages. It has wooden paths. Easy car access.
M.
Great on a nice day quite busy though
N.
The only bad thing here is that you can only leave your car for 4 hours. It's larger than I thought it'd be, and with direct access to the Alpine Crossing start.
C.
The most amazing hike. Definitely go up to the summit of mount Ngaruhoe (Mount Doom)!
T.
Amazing hike!
A.
Was looking forward to this place for a solid 10kms of walking. It has plenty of enough room for the "rescue bus"
D.
Incredible experience! Only been in the winter. Ensure you bring the correct mountaineering gear!
a.
If you get the opportunity to do this, take it
T.
it was such an amazing hike! lots of interesting rocks and formations to look at.
good workout
J.
Perfect place to park the car and start the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. But it is necessary arrive early because it is a small car park
m.
A must do one day trek if you are going to New Zealand. Incredible landscapes
K.
Do this hike. You will never regret it! best thing I ever did.

(Translated) The starting point of a day crossing the trail, the beginning of adventure and challenge. A long-dreamed one-day trail, about 19.4 kilometers, magnificent scenery.
(Original)
M.
(Translated) The review of course refers to the hike, not to the parking lot - this is either blocked for private cars on nice hiking days or can only be used for a few hours.
The best way to arrive is by bus, which is organized by the National Park Village, Taupo or large hotels. After the parking lot it goes flat uphill, the paths are typically excellent for New Zealand.
After a first steep climb at the foot of Mount Ngauruhoe, it descends into a plateau. It is very flat until it goes steeply uphill again. This route is difficult but usually not dangerous. The climb to Mount Ngauruhoe is mostly closed due to earthquakes and the risk of falling rocks.
You can then look at the Red Crater before descending steeply on sand and rubble to the Emerald Lakes - one of the most popular motifs. Again over a plateau you reach another small lake and then after a short climb down into the valley to the parking lot.
This path is perfectly developed, but the many steps can get on your knees. At the parking lot you will be brought back to the starting point by bus.
You should really adhere to the equipment recommendation, i.e. shoes, clothing, provisions such as water and much more. On my tour I saw countless hikers wearing sandals, street shoes and inadequate clothing.
The hike takes around 8 hours for people in good condition - including short breaks in the most beautiful places. However, 9 hours are fine and should be taken into account as a precaution.
(Original)

(Translated) Beautiful day hike. It took us about 7 hours, with short breaks. Good footwear is very important because it can get very steep up and down. Recommended to anyone who feels fit enough!

A.
(Translated) It's a cool hike with great views. Unfortunately, the tour has little to do with hiking. For the most part the paths are paved and slopes are built on stairs. We started 7:00 am, there is not much going on yet. But during the day it gets very crowded.

(Translated) Date, difficulty, and sights were all lacking in dating tracking. After visiting Mt. Fuji, I was disappointed with the volcano, but Tongariro had a fantastic view. The total distance is 19.4km and the time required is 6.5 hours. Most of them are plain courses, and there is nothing special on the difficulty level. As the blue lake descends from the red crater, it is a slipping downhill.

(Translated) One of the most beautiful hikes in the world, really! We had the chance to do it at the end of May and therefore in the cold and with very, very few people. We were alone in the world and it was superb.
Be careful in winter, the tour operators do not shuttle between the two parking lots ($ 60 which is overpriced). Leave your car here and drive to Mount Tongariro then come back. In the snow it will take you around 7 hours round trip (it slips a bit up there).
Equip yourself correctly and forget the sneakers because the snow is really present and it climbs (first half of the course very accessible because almost flat).
Admire the view of Mount Ngauruhoe Aka The Mountain of Destiny;)
(Original)

(Translated) Tongarino Crossing
We drove very early in the morning directly at 6:30 with the first shuttle to the starting point. The shuttle was on time and the bus big enough for everyone. The first part of the 21km hike was relatively unsettling, which is worth seeing after the second intense climb to about 1880m altitude. The small lakes are really great, the craters impressive.
The way back becomes a bit tough in the last third. Annoying are the plastic honeycomb of the ways and countless stairs. The paths we found boring, as much too flat and expanded.
The toilets are distributed every few miles and not recommended. Take hygiene towels with you.
We needed a total of almost 7 hours. The time information is so consistent.
Somewhat dangerous is the descent from the highest point, this is completely unsecured and quite screeching. Here you fall down quickly.
Overall, the tour is absolutely worth seeing. A star deduction is only because of the dirty toilets.

Tongarino Crossing
Hier fällt man schnell hin.
P.
(Translated) Wonderful tour. Departure at 5 in the morning (ideal time to avoid the hundreds of people who walk this path every day) and arrival around 13 counting all the various breaks for lunch photos ... (it's 6/7 hours of walking). The path is for the most part easy thanks to the steps built in the steep areas and the various walkways, but there is a fairly complicated stretch (the descent from the summit to the first lake) especially if you are not wearing hiking boots or shoes. At the top it can be cold even if it is sunny and at the start it is hot.

(Translated) Hmm. Mandatory trail to cross. Lots of people, but take it easy, they are usually nice smiling and very tired, and the views? See for yourself. I would recommend.

Hmm. Obowiązkowy szlak do przejścia. Sami zobaczcie. Polecam.

(Translated) - MUST DO - The most beautiful hike we have ever done. You can do the 19.4 kilometers even if you're not the sportiest... But not recommended with small children... We rented hiking boots in the next town for $15 each. You should wear hiking shoes! An unforgettable hike, which we both can only recommend to everyone.

(Translated) Certainly one of the most beautiful hikes in the world. Especially when the weather is clear. It allows you to admire Mount Taranaki a few hundred kilometers away but also Wanganui National Park. Be careful, even in good weather, access to the red crater requires crampons (winter). Crampons available for hire: $ 50 per day.

(Translated) Yesterday my family had a great time. This was possible for the staff managed by the parking lot ... because of the kind explanation and consideration before climbing the mountain ...
Requires more water than expected. You need to be prepared for strong winds ... It's so cool.

(Translated) Highly recommended hike! There is a lot to see and the path is very varied.
Since it is not a circular route, you should take the bus to get to the second parking lot and start from there. It can get very cool at the top, so a windproof jacket is recommended.
(Original)
Sehr empfehlenswerte Wanderung!

(Translated) The hike is challenging, but quite doable. I would only advise against it to children. I used the shuttle myself and started in the west and my destination was in the east. It is really breathtakingly beautiful, but water, sturdy shoes and something to eat are an absolute must. You should allow for waiting time at the few toilets.
(Original)

(Translated) Very cool hike! Something different since it's a volcano. It goes up and down again and again so that there is also variety for the legs. But beware! You have to start early (5am) otherwise there will be a lot of people up there.

Sehr geile Wanderung!

(Translated) This is a real icing! A super nice tour with a great view, no matter where it is. Just turn around or look up / down and hold the jaw. Really nice. I easily managed the tour in 4 hours because I only took 2 breaks. The 4h specifies the maximum parking time at the parking lot. But I would say a tolerance time of 60-90 minutes in the off-season is easy. I'm not so sure about the main season. Since this is a rather popular tour and can also be crossed, you should definitely start in the morning to avoid traffic jams. Mount Doom is calling :)
(Original)
Mount Doom ruft :)

(Translated) A great hike. It is best to take rainproof clothing with you! Good shoes also help.
There is no way to buy food or drink on the way, so be sure to bring enough with you. The water from the falls should not be drunk because of the natural chemicals!
Is a very special experience and should definitely be done in New Zealand!
