Reviews of Currach Irish Pub
S.
This place is amazing. Good beer on tap and great selection of wine. We stayed nearby for multiple nights and ate a large portion of the menu. The chef is amazing (and all the staff). Here’s the best part - order the meal with the Creamed smoked parsnip, he smokes it with Manuka and holy moly it’s easily the best tasting food I’ve ever tasted (and I love strong and exotic flavours), the steak was incredible too, but never have I tried a vegetable that tasted so good. I think I had some tears of joy as I ate it, I seriously cannot begin to explain how yum it is. In case I didn’t make it clear, order the meal with the parsnip.

Stayed here at the Currach over the Xmas holidays- absolutely blissful!
The accommodation was delightful, and the pub was friendly with top class meals! Was lucky enough to be there on Sunday for a hilarious comedy night!
Thanks Orla & team.
L.
A must visit while on the barrier. Friendly staff. Fantastic menu, delicious food. If you’re luckily enough to be there when the comedy is on… go! Such a brilliant night!
e.
Loved it . Great setting . Lovely staff . Reasonable price. Good food mostly just found a cple things bit to salty . Will go again if I go back to the barrier 😁
M.
We spent a weekend at the Curragh during winter time - it was amazing! Our rooms was cosy and offered everything we needed. Our dinner was fabulous both nights - the special was lamb shank with cabbage and mash - to die for - and the stone oven pizzas were a delight. The lovely owner told us that her chef trained under Jamie Oliver - no wonder! We had great live music, too. If you are looking for the best pint of Guinness out of Ireland - go to Curragh on Great Barrier Island. Sláinte

We were on the Island for work and visited your establishment on Sunday 1st August. Turned out they had a comedy night on, haven't laughed so hard in ages. But have to say the service was great, very friendly atmosphere, the food is simple but very tasty. I had a steak, one of the best I've ever had that I hadn't had to cook myself. Great work team, looking forward to taking my wife over to stay with you guys soon.

So pleased to be back at the Currach after a long lock down. The chef, Sam, is definitely not rusty and did not disappoint. We had the slow cooked beef and morrocan lamb, capsicum humous, with feta, cucumber salad and beautifully crispy chickpeas from the new menu and were absolutely blown away. If you visit the Barrier regularly but haven't frequented the pub lately, 100% book a table and try out the new menu. Service was fab and the gardens are in bloom.
J.
Lovely spot, great vibe and excellent wood fire pizza, like everything on GB, it ain't cheap, but would definitely recommend it.
P.
Great setting, location and food. We were walking there one evening and a car stopped and offered us a ride. Not only that but then dropped us back at the boat after dinner
W.
Great staff and really good food
M.
Good pizza, not overpriced. Selection of vegetarian dishes quite limited. Nice outdoor area.
K.
Amazing food, lovely friendly staff/owners. Great atmosphere. Highly recommended.
S.
The food was really good but note the online menu is quite out of date and no gluten free pizzas or burgers available
P.
Beautiful space to get a pint as the sun goes down!
S.
Nice meal, good selection of beers and wine. Can highly recommend the seafood chowder. Cool, low key funky vibe and friendly (if a little slow) service. A thoroughly enjoyable evening out.
G.
Good food, awesome set up
K.
Good food, friendly staff with a great atmosphere. Definitely recommend coming here if your over at great barrier island
M.
Apologies I'm not sure how my review of one star was registered! The Currach was definitely a 5star rating from me. Friendly staff, Yummy as new menu. Nice job Sam, the new chef. And great craic all round ☘🍻🥳👍
J.
Great staff
Great Pizzas
Lovely outdoor setting.
Good covid protocols.
R.
Fabulous pizzas, lovely thin crust with just the right amount of topping, wood fired. The lasagne was excellent. Nice selection of beer and the staff are very friendly. Music night is not to be missed. Best place on the Island for a night out.
R.
Great food, service and bar! We ate here three times during our stay. Highly recommend!!
R.
Great relaxed n comfortable place with great staff and punters including locals=always a good sign
C.
A real leader in hospitality on the Barrier! Beautiful food, always a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Still thinking about those tempura olives.....mmmmm.
E.
Great meal in the outdoors for our small tour group.
R.
Great evening at short notice. Wood fire Pizza was lovely. Do their own buns for hamburgers, sticky toffee pudding and twice cooked crispy chips. Yum
J.
Fantastic pub. The food was unbelievably good, as good as any downtown Auckland restaurant. Orla the owner of the pub is a generous and extremely friendly host.
R.
This place is very popular. Good food. Had Guinness beer and wood fired pizza. Seafood chowder was excellent. What a wonderful trip except renting Shoal Bay Rental car. If you don't want to spoil your trip, stay away from Shoal Bay Rentals. They ask 100% advance and thats it. You are stuck with their poor service. Val from this company had arranged a car at the airport but that car was nowhere to be seen. She wasn't contactable either. Nor do they have anyone at airport/ferry to sort any issues. 2.5 hours got wasted in trying to contact her. I reached her office spending 60 dollars from my own pocket. Her office was closed too. Finally I took a car that was parked at her office and spent 30 dollars on fuel to fill it up. This car had worn-out tyres and kept skidding while driving. Till date Val has neither apologized nor reimbursed me my 90 dollars. Worst experience ever!
A.
Not many options on Great Barrier Island, but the Currach don't take advantage of their captive market, they deliver excellent friendly service and great food in a warm and welcoming environment. Would definitely go back.
G.
Stayed a night at the attached Innkeeper's Lodge - very comfortable and well priced - room spacious for 4 people.
The Currach pub is great. The food is good for an island with few options but the true strength is the atmosphere, with the staff and managers each being welcoming and lovely.
Would definitely stay again!
K.
Great pizza, Guinness and atmosphere - especially on a Saturday night with live music. Definitely a highlight of visiting the island - so good we went twice.
S.
Pub on Island. Friendly folk. Meals good with great fresh fish on offer. Nice setting. Pizza oven looks great but not going the Friday night we were there...closer to summer. Lots of locals. Recommended
S.
Great place. The food, people and the atmosphere. The feel of irish music history lingers on the walls. An essence of Irish whisky. Enjoyed my stay.
b.
I stayed at the Currach for 5 days and 4 nights recently with my wife. It felt like our second honeymoon. The accommodation is surrounded by beautiful trees that have so many native birds singing from dawn to dusk. So magical. We had 2 dinners at the pub which were delicious. Fresh fish and friendly service. On our final night we enjoyed live entertainment. I highly recommend this place as a fun place to eat and drink and also a great option for accommodation!
A.
Had a gorgeous stay at the Currach Irish Pub accommodation - thanks to Orla and all the staff for being so welcoming! Tasty food and great atmosphere - make sure to come on a Thursday night for the live music 😊
J.
Shame this doesnt go to 6 stars.. warmest welcome, lovely people, great atmosphere and fantastic food - (ribs in Guinness bbq sauce are to die for). I stay here regularly and count days till my next visit.. this place is a gem and in one of my favourite places on the planet that I am privileged enough to work on a few weeks a year. Will see you soon... (posted on behalf of Mark the fire guy).
C.
Nice generous portions and the sauce on the steak was delicious then top that off with an awesome sticky date pudding great food, loved it.
A.
We were looking for a couple of days away from the frenetic pace of Auckland. The Currach delivered in spades. It's rustic charm with so much of interest within and the peaceful garden were a real treat. Our spacious, airy room with a huge bed was quiet, clean and comfortable. The food was fresh, plentiful and delicious. Altogether a delightful place to stay and we will certainly go back.
S.
Absolutely fantastic Irish pub, the best we've been to outside Ireland! Delicious food, super staff and lovely location. Couldn't recommend more highly! A must if you're visiting Great Barrier
J.
chips to go with the crispy wood fired pizza perfect combo and the local solar charged APA. Lots of different spaces at this venue caters for all
D.
Had a great stay here over Easter, nice rooms, good food and friendly staff. The pub was busy every night with live music too.
o.
Great place to go! Not really what I would say is an "Irish pub" but still tasty food and a nice outlook from the deck.
K.
This seems to be the main social place on the island.
Had a couple of minor issues with our table booking and pizza order, but the staff promptly sorted them out and gave us a free round of drinks to apologise.
Loved the decor, very irish themed indeed, and even some local art too. You felt like you were in someone's house.
Managed to try their pizza's, so good, lots of great size topping, was too full for dessert afterwards. Nicely washed down with a few glasses of local brew afterwards.
A MUST do while on the island.
M.
Live music excellent food and service well worth a visit.
S.
Fabulous food, excellent service, great interaction with owners, rooms tidy and beds sooooo comfortable. All set in a little corner of paradise. Definately coming back next year with Brent le Page and our group.
L.
Wonderful music, awesome crew and hospitality
J.
Great woodfired pizzas and fresh fish. Very good friendly service and a lovely laid back atmosphere. Very appropriate for the beautiful Tryphena.
P.
My husband and I were recommended that a 'MUST DO on Great Barrier is to go to the Irish Pub'. We did and absolutely loved the experience, the food was like none other, the live music was devine and the sense of community and hospitality was soul nourishing to say the least! It was all so fantastic we went back on our second night for another round - in fact it was so lovely we are planning a trip from the Mainland back to Tryphena and the Irish Pub, just to share the experience with some friends! Thank you :)
k.
Very friendly locals and lovely accomodation
G.
Had a lovely dinner first night we were on the island. Dinner was tasty and what we expected. Service was great from the owner and just lovely lady. Worth a look while your here.
r.
Comfortable beeds clean rooms, impressed with the power and water given its off grid.
m.
Great food and selection of beers including local brews.
A.
The Currach is a delightful find on this unspoilt paradise of an off grid Island. The food is great; super fresh and great value. From a sumptious seafood chowder, succulent steaks and daily chef specials not to mention the desserts! The chef is Italian and his lasagne - made from scratch - is to die for. It is no small feat to deliver great food on an off the gird island but The Currach serves up an authentic pint of Guinness, a regular Thursday night jam session and a resident band Rook for impromptu music sessions as well. On the way home you can sit by the ocean and ponder the majesty of the Milky Way. Remember to bring your torch!
J.
Clean rooms. Shower head not the greatest. Power to recharge devices intermittent. Goes with being off the grid. Service good and the meals. Prices reasonable. Would stay again.
T.
Great wee pub. Good beer selection and excellent food. Recommend coming here when you're on the Island.
B.
I enjoyed a cold beer...but I really am trying to get in contact with coops..aka Andrew cooper...if he has not vacated the island..could you please let him know...i would love to come back to the island...spend a fortune at the pub...flirt with the ladies...and hopefully get back on the plane...Cheers... been a year... what else is happening... not much..coops... you are such a recluse
Y.
Well-deserved award for best Irish pub in the 'rest of the world' category 😊 Lovely staff, beautiful sunny deck, great food, what more could you want?
B.

Irish stew and seafood chowder was the best.our room was spotless. And we loved the atmosphere in the pub.we will be staying there again for sure.😊😊
M.
Good food, lovely set up and atmosphere but service is very slow. So if you are hungry hmmm maybe go somewhere else...
E.
Great little pub with lots of character. The rooms are super cute and cosy.
D.
The Currach Irish pub has a real community atmosphere and on a winters night the fire will be lit warming you to your sole. A great spot to meet and chat.
N.
I don't normally write reviews (ever), but the Currach was so amazing I thought it was worth it. Amazing food and generous, authentic hospitality.
A.
Amazing cosy pub with great food and beer. The owners are possibly the nicest people you are likely to meet.
Do not miss this place.

The place has a friendly atmosphere and you can get meals there. Being an Irish bar it serves Guinness as well as local beers
