Reviews of Northcote Tavern
F.
Such a awesome pub. Popped in for lunch was not disappointed. Yum food and big portions. Perfect location will definitely be coming back!!
M.
The rice bowl was amazing, good and fresh salmon. The tiramisu was a bit watery. The food took long time.
G.
The Northcote Tav is a great pub for a lazy Sunday lunch, or watching the Rugby on their many big screens. Food is really good quality, never disappointed.
The cozy Highlander Bar is a calmer place. The sports mad public bar is a great place to catch up with the mates and watch some sports. There is a big outdoor area that is perfect for a Sunday afternoon and family friendly.
s.
One of the best taverns in Auckland, been here only a few times over the years but has a great atmosphere, friendly staff and delectable menu and plenty of room.
F.
Love the food and the service, amazing! Husband ordered the Rendang Pie for myself and it soooo good and delicious, freshly made and with crispy curry leaves added to it, 👌🏻👌🏻we will defintely come back!
C.
Went for brunch. The kitchen staff were awesome, very friendly, professional but could have a laugh with them too. A dynamic team. The food was on point. We had the Kaarage Chicken and Fish and Chips. A great way to spend a Saturday morning.
D.
Oh that's such a good spot for drinks with friends. Area outside is do nice 😊
R.
Great Tavern, and in general one of the best hospitality venues in Auckland. It’s family friendly, dog friendly and overall a great experience. The staff are doing their best with covid restrictions and are so polite and accomodating. I’ve never had a bad experience here and will return over and over. Great food, great selection of beverages and the best staff.
G.
Amazing place to come, with helpful and friendly staff who seem to be doing the very best they possibly can with difficult covid restrictions. Great range of beer and amazing food - cant wait to come back with friends to enjoy the incredible back yard in the sunshine!
A.
Had a tasty meal (pork belly) and beer in the outdoor dining area. Nice relaxed atmosphere. They even gave a free plate a rice for the young one. Much appreciated.
J.
Great little pub tucked away just outside of Northcote. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The Sunday roasts are Great, highly recommend this place on a Sunny day.
R.
Great service cold beer must come back
d.
Great service every time I go. Whether with Mum or family or a few drinks on a Friday.
This place makes you feel welcome 👍👍
C.
Love this place and you will too if you like a relaxed vibe, great for kids and dogs, good food, excellent service and good beer on tap. My personal favourite part that sets this place apart is the old world charm complete with old photos of northcote point and tartan carpet, homage to the Scottish clan theme running through the place. Got Scottish blood? Look up your clan, crest and tartan on the walls around the tav, all whilst enjoying a bevy of your choice. Mint.
S.
We’ve just had the best (and perfectly cooked) comfort food at the Northcote Tav - Pork Belly with Asian Slaw and the Beef Cheek Pie. Delicious. Thank you!
D.
Visited today from MatKana. Had the very best roast beef ever. Would love to know how it was cooked . Thank-you Northcote Tavern
N.
Great to have a Guinness here and a very large garden to enjoy in good weather. Nice atmosphere and very relaxing.
P.
An unexpected combination of a country pub feel though it is a short drive from the centre of Auckland. The main building is old and historic (by NZ standards) and on a sunny day the grounds, with the outdoor tables and umbrellas, are a great option. Inside there are the typical bars and dining of a pub.
The food and drinks were generously sized and tasted fine. Service was a bit slow, they seemed really busy, but friendly enough and not intrusive.
Basically, this is the real thing not an imitation.
C.
A great old building. Huge potential. An Ok selection of beers but could be significantly improved with a bit of effort. Had the Ruben grilled cheese sandwich. Greasy would be the best description.
A.
Amazing tavern. It’s the best place ever, super inclusive and welcoming, making sure all patrons are kept safe and looked after. Great range of beverages, great food and the most incredible staff. I love it.
A.
Love having beers on the grass area in the sun. Cool too see families with their kids and dogs.
A.
Great pub atmosphere and lovely staff. Had the miso aubergine burger and it was surprisingly tasty!
P.
I just love this place... at one point I did work there... miss the the awesome team working there everyday to run the place... thank you all being so hospitable. U guys rock ... Ange...
a.
Lovely service. The food was delicious. Pork dinner awesome. Very thoughtful ladies who carried the cake into the dining room. Was a very nice 90th birthday. Thankyou.
S.
Cold beers, nice staff. Lovely outdoor drink area at the rear & side. Loved it.😍😍
A.
I do not normally go to pubs or taverns. This was a special occaision to honor an employer of mine and all the others in the group. Great staff attention without intrusion.
J.
Fantastic service, delicious, fast, generously sized meals and excellent COVID management / protocols. Highly recommend.
J.
Perfect outdoor setting with sun umbrella and lime tree. Don't start with the chips and chicken, cause you won't want to stop!
M.

Awesome place. Great food and atmosphere. Thank you.
m.
Such a great historical pub. Great venue with huge putdoir table area with loads of room for kids to play. The food is great pub style, great flavour, great size, good prices. Deserts are great here. Sorry no photos, will add on next visit.
J.
Fantastic pub, amazing staff, location, building, food. Hands down the best pub in NZ.
G.
This place is really nice. Lovely outdoor area (its huge). The bar is nice and also Scottish themed which is a rarity. But from what I've been told, that's always been the case (my dad had been going there since he was a teenager OMG Cannae believe it). It has beers and toilets and all the other stuff. The food was pretty good pub fare. What makes this place is it's general surroundings. The big gardens and old building. There's nowhere really like this left and it's nice. Except for the tartan carpet. I hate that carpet but it really ties the room together
S.
My boss introduced me to this gem and I feel in love with it's cozy charm. The food was great, drinks not too expensive and the decor reminded me of my grandparents' home.
Rounding it out were the friendly staff. Highly recommend.
k.
We were taking our 9 year old out for her birthday dinner with family. We had planned on taking her elsewhere but the traffic was heavy and quickly changed our minds to going to the Northcote Tavern. We were warmly greeted by the barman in the Eatery, who inquired about our 10 year old on her crutches. Each member of staff interacted warmly and friendly towards our girls, especially the two young waitresses who sang happy birthday to Miss 9 after being asked as a 'wind up' by the big sister. They were keen and sang immediately. The locals were friendly too and joined in. Our meals were substantial, well priced and good, tasty pub food, enjoyed by all. A nice fire on a cold night too. Thank you for making Miss 9 year old's birthday a great memory. We would thoroughly recommend.
G.
Great atmosphere, supported St Patrick's Day in style.
N.
This is a great local pub. The garden bar is lovely on a sunny afternoon, and the tables are well sheltered with sturdy sun umbrellas. The food is classic pub food, the kids loved the fish and chips. Burgers pretty tasty too. Kids meal comes with a free icecream and sprinkles which was met with excitement. Good place to catch up after work too. Staff very helpful, service efficient.
S.
Nice outside area for drinks & delicious Waggu Burger. Ex chips. Nice place to stop.
M.
Great food and delightful customer service. A bit drafty.
D.
Good food, cold beer, huge outdoor space, pokies, tab.. What else could you ever need.
M.
Proper old style pub with good food and an amazing outdoor park area - dog friendly
R.
Been going there on and off around 45 years, still a good spot for beer.
E.
Great place to eat a pub lunch. Good selection of food.
T.
Great outdoor seating. Our first time here and we will be back next time in Auckland
N.
Lovely historic building, very good food at reasonable prices
L.
We held our family Christmas party this year at the tavern. There were 22 of us! The staff and management were fantastic and shifted tables and chairs about when we arrived so we could all sit in a line. The food was delicious and huge meals. The bar staff very attentive to our needs.
We're planning to come again next year!
D.
Excellent food and cold beer! Love the Scottish theme
S.
Loved the peace and quiet, classic yet modern look. Brilliant location and outdoor smoking area. U never feel rushed. The walk to the kitchen is a pain but the food is worth it. The bar and service is efficient and staff are smiling and conversing well.
P.
Another delicious meal and a couple of quiet drinks
C.
Decent food, good beer. Can’t wait to get back here post lockdown.
K.
Great bar, friendly staff, good food with the best beer garden in Auckland!
Highly recommend the Sunday roast
p.
Used to be a regular back in the day. The catering is under new management, it wasn't too bad before but now its really good. Well priced meals, well presented and well cooked. The only reason it wasn't a 5 star (i really wanted to give it 4.5) was that our table remained uncleared until our puddings arrived, and the brownies were slightly burnt on the bottom. But thats nitpicking. Be warned, don't eat anything before ordering as the dinners are a good size. Footnote, they were pretty busy.
E.
I like this place, in summer you can eat and have a drink on the grass. Reasonable pub food, does not try too hard, and has Emerson's Pilsner on tap!
j.
Lovely fish and chips. Full dining room of happy people enjoying time quietly together. No loud music to contend with.
Well done
I.
First time to the Tavern . We all had a lovely time. The staff were helpful and friendly. And the food was exceptional. Looking forward to go back and trying something different off the menu. My son gave it 6 stars out of 5
P.
The Professor and I were invited to Friday lunch at the Tavern. It was a spectacular day walking into the enterprise a bit earlier than scheduled. A busy lunch time trade was happening but there were no queues at the bar where we were attended to quickly and cheerfully. We took in the ambiance over an unhurried beer.
Our luncheon participants arrived, were quickly supplied with drinks from the bar tender and settled unmolested to catch up. Eventually I and the other male participants were dispatched to the kitchen to place our food order. No problem with the Professors exchange chips for salad requirement then we were back at the table discussing righting wrongs. Food came out all but one. The time the food was on the table seemed interminable but it was probably only a few minutes. Once we tucked in the food had maintained temperature and was delicious. The Professor thought more spice and thickness in the sauce but concluded its level of spice was about right for most people. Extra spicy option could be the answer.
Apparently the enterprise had won and an award for it's offerings that day. I think the award was deserved.
C.
A country pub a stones throw from the city. A great place to hang out any day of the week. The field is magic in the summer full of families and pets. A unique kiwi experience.
R.
On Tuesday 29 December 2020 I attended a luncheon with a group of seniors (table 1). The lady behind the bar was friendly and very helpful.
The food, with plenty of options available, was very good with good friendly service. A very enjoyable experience. Many thanks.
G.
Northcote Tavern is a great place for recreational purposes, whether you're there for and after work drink or a family gathering, the tavern has it all. Northcote Tavern serves a large variety of drinks, and the food is very good! They have delicious fish and chips, burgers, potatoes and mash, and a lovely range of deserts. Over all I think The Northcote Tavern is an awesome place to be! (four stars because there is always room for improvement)
:)))
N.
New favourite pub to go to. Very family friendly and good food.
J.
Friendly staff, good food, great tavern.
S.
Good priced beers. Friendly staff. Good food. Few different bars to explore. Pretty good time.
N.
Great cozy place with beautiful terrace
T.
Nice place to meet up with friends and family. Great outdoor play area for the kids. Good menu (try the Yorkshire Pudd when available), friendly service. Very popular so you are not likely to have a quiet little drink.
J.
it was a great atmosphere on a summer's evening at the end of the week. Had the feeling of an old English pub with a great beer garden and umbrellas. Great menu, lovely food. A very local friendly community feel. We will go again .
A.
Still lives up to it's reputation, 20 years I've been a fan
i.
This is the place for a drink or a fantastic meal. Well worth the visit.
First visit and we will be back soon. The Scottish theme evident throughout makes it a great venue.
C.
Tavern seems to be a favourite with locals and was busy while we were here. Good was very good and everyone in my group enjoyed their meals. Staff were friendly and helpful. Lots of outdoor seating and would be a great spot in summer.
A.
Dining room and bar has been styled up, snazzy tartan carpet. Two gas fires make it cosy in winter. Good pub food menu that changes during the week. Kitchen has a separate fryer for gluten free food, Coeliac husband so happy to have chips again. Friendly staff.
B.
4 stars for dog friendliness. Beers - standards, no blacks or sours on tap/bottle (other than Guinness). Decent pub food.
C.
We visited for the first time on Monday and don’t know why we hadn’t gone sooner. We enjoyed some drinks on the lawn and friends ordered some food. Great service!
c.
Great beer, friendly caring staff, relaxed layout with heaps of zones. Plenty of parking except when its busy. Food is great quality esp the chicken. Cheers Northcote Tavern
E.
A character building with a few too many TV screens showing all manner of sports. Didn't try the food but it looked pretty good!
S.
Great old place and service.
K.
Lovely old school pub great food and garden bar. Nice atmosphere
D.
Great hotel old as building
We sent off our great friend KIM GIRBIN on Saturday 29th Feb
N.
Top notch food! Dont expect to get your regular mediocre pub food here, these guys serve some really tastey food and cater to all
C.
A truly fantastic historical Tavern just by the harbor bridge. Great food & alfresco dinning if you so desire. Either in the lovely private front garden bar or in the adjacent park. Where there are plenty of family picnic tables and games for all to play. Family fun for all. 8/10
D.
Great old school pub with good range of food and beers. Lovely outdoor area for summer and fire inside in winter.
S.
Very popular in the weekend as it has a beer garden with space for the children to play and climb trees. Inside is more like an English pub with pub meals. Meals are large but average quality.
A.
Good British themed pub. Possibly Scottish if that's a thing. Tartan and cat of arms. Does contactless. Plenty seats and outdoor seating. Menu looked good. Proper British grub.
A.
Old time pub lovingly restored and steeped in history. Lovely exterior grassy area with picnic tables. Good food and with two bars available. A Sports bar and a very comfortable lounge bar set with old English/Scottish charm.
t.
Good range of draught beers at reasonable prices. Attractive food menu. Sunday lunch very good. Large beer garden and car park. Speedy service and first class staff. Views pretty good too.
A.
Always love coming here when the weather is good. The little ones enjoy running around the large fenced off grassy area while we eat at one of the many picnic tables.
G.
Such a great tavern. Awesome atmosphere and a lovely outdoor area which is perfect for a nice summers day. The food is delicious and the staff are great.
G.
Beer and burger from new restaurant The White Lady. Perfect.
C.
Pleasant pub with typical pub food well cooked and presented. Would welcome an expanded fish menu.
c.
Used to live 4 doors up, the place is still the same, we had a big family gathering of about 25 ppl, they had no problem catering for us and all the other patrons, food was great and fast, highly recommended
M.
Very good place. Excellent indoor and outdoor areas for families. Great drinks place in the area. One of the best place.
J.
Proper old school boozer with a huge beer garden to down some Guinness in the sun.
Kid friendly.
Stick a side of chips gravy and cheese on the side for the ultimate experience.
Are you a pom looking for an English pub? Drop in, you won't be disappointed.....
R.
Great place to enjoy a great beer and food. Enjoyed eating outside in the sun around beautiful gardens. Loads of memorabilia. Scottish and Irish.
K.
The steak sandwich was really nice. Everyone’s food looked good. Coffee was good & the outdoor seating great on a sunny afternoon. Great place for all the family & kids are safe in the fenced garden.
E.
Fabulous old world pub. Great food. Great garden bar on a nice day. Really good atmosphere. Can get pretty busy on friday nights and weekends.
c.
Great: efficient, polite service even for s large group, lovely food, reasonable prices. Would definitely support again.
S.
Great place for a relaxed drink and some nice pub food.
A.
Not upmarket but a genuine kiwi pub. Good food, karaoke on Thursdays. The grass out front is very popular on a decent day sand great if you have kids.
C.
Warm and welcoming staff, good food . Really good pub
B.
Very nice, warm and inviting atmosphere. We are US tourists and lucked out when we ran into this place. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Food was excellent and lots of it. Highly recommended.
D.
Valentines dinner. Pink gin & tonic with strawberries & blueberries. Steak & mushroom sauce, egg, chips & salad
G.
Classic pub meal and environment. Friendly and bustling on the Saturday night we visited with families enjoying a relaxing meal. Only negative is the pokie machines out back and the smokers clustered around the back door
P.
Classic rare kiwi tavern not tk be missed. Great summer beer garden
C.
A great little local pub, but still has the guts to attract people from further afield. Does try to be all things for all people, and mostly succeeds at the task. Plenty of parking, large outside area (unfenced) to bask in the sun with dogs, kids on a picnic table or on the grass, pokies, fishing comps, kareoke, pub grub, a little coffee cafe on the other side... the list goes on. But what I like best of all is the history and all the interesting and novel decor inside.
H.
Lovely pub, nice food, great atmosphere for all both in the garden or the bars.
M.
Didnt like the high tables. You simply can't find a way to seat properly because your knees are always hitting the table.
K.
Fantastic service from the staff and the food was excellent, we had 8 people in our group all had different meals and we were all very impressed.
Don't forget to like my review if you find it useful. :-)
j.
Best beer garden in NZ and reasonably priced beers too, always welcoming groups of people it is worth the journey to visit this place, also a short walk to some spectacular views is Auckland from under the harbour bridge
J.
Love this place, cozy atmosphere, kid friendly food was a little pricey but the taste definitely made up for it don;t mind paying a tad extra if the foods great!!! A+ definitely my new local
G.
Best garden bar on the shore
o.
Food is ok also service is friendly
C.
Great food and customer service. Also has an amazing outdoor area perfect for kids
T.
Closest thing to a UK pub I'll get in the area! Feels very homely and great food/drinks
M.
Great outdoor area & food, could use a little playground for the kids but there’s a good bit of grass
M.
Friendly cosy local pub with great food. Not a fancy menu, just good hearty fare. Be warned, the Sunday roast sells out around 5pm! Reasonable prices.
R.
Great garden bar (Aucklands best by the way), and a great "Pub Lunch" location. They also have a great wine list and of course beer. We enjoy a visit before we head to the Bridgeway theatre for a movie.....
M.
Hate to bring the party down but had an 'ok' time here on sat. Yes the warriors losing couldn't be helped, and it's hard to judge a whole menu on just the wedges but I felt a bit let down. I think in 2019 having "bacon" on the dish means bacon, not 6x squares of tiny cubed ham. Friends meals didn't look that great either, just 'ok pub food'. I think what the issue was here is that all other pubs' food standard has risen in recent years (we're very lucky in Auckland imo), yet the tav has remained the same. Was going off and I liked that they served the beer in actual pints. Good during the summer for kids on the massive back yard. I'll go back again for beers and sports though.
R.
Beautiful old fashioned pub. Super good value Tuesday night dinner specials. Not crowded and really friendly staff and patrons. Had a perfect family night here.
B.
Great selection of beer and wine. Enjoyed the fish and chips.
G.
I just like the atmosphere
D.
Choices galore; cosy wee bars, sports bar and huge grassy outdoor areas. No matter what setting you're looking for, there is a good you'll find it here. Super friendly staff with a great range of drinks available. Food is good too and comes out the kitchen quickly.
N.
Great location and friendly staff
S.
Great selection of beers on tap. And the food is great...good variety, catering for everyone. Love the atmosphere outside on the lawn!
D.
Great place for lunch. Good staff and food
A.
Nice old fashioned pub! Would be better if they had some great music pumping outside.
D.
Great pub. Food is good pub food. Service friendly. Some nice spaces. Better in summer as can get crowded.
J.
Does what it says on the tin. Awesome pub/tavern with old school styles in the best possible sense. Great for beer, families, sports- top spot!👍
Z.
We went on a Sunday night to enjoy the Sunday roast. It certainly did not disappoint. Lashings of gravy over a Yorkshire pudding. $19.50 a head for a hearty meal which satisfied even I - a 'hungas'. Panhead APA on tap is a pleasant surprise too (one of my favourites).
I am only writing such a lengthy review to get my Google guide review writing to the next level. I seriously wonder if I've made it to over 200 characters...

180 without spaces. I think I cracked 400 now though.
D.
Great old pub with good atmosphere and great food. Friendly staff.
K.
If you're into fairly old school British style pubs, this is for you! Quite a nice garden out the back. But the area does have lots of trendier new pubs which I much prefer.
J.
I love this place. Drinks and food really delicious with very reasonable prices. Parking is fantastic and you can aways have a flutter on the pokies!
C.
An old country pub feel but near the heart of Auckland. Separate sports and lounge bar and huge outdoor area great for all the family.
K.
Awesome place for catching up with friends. Largest garden bar area I've ever seen! Good food too.
C.
Great local pub atmosphere, large outdoor grassed area with picnic tables to bring the family and young children. We'll be back.
S.
Good for a family meal and great food. It does get very busy so there can be a wait for food but when it comes it’s worth it- especially the pies!
O.
Love this place. Great atmosphere. Very comfortable. An area to suit all occasions. Only thing I would suggest for improvement is service
J.
Quiet little local pub when I was there not many people but I can see the potential for a very busy pub on the weekends! Nice place!
D.
Great Ambience, food and service. Helped to make a sad occasion warm and memorable for the family and friends. Thank you.
M.
One of the best pubs in Auckland. Awesome historic pub vibe. Less pretentious than 99% of Auckland pubs which try too hard to be 'gastropubs'
S.
It's a great pub. A well established local. The food could do with some work for the price they charge.
P.
A fantastic historic pub. Friendly staff, a good kitchen, excellent outdoor seating. Worth a visit.
J.
Good old fashioned pub.
Great atmosphere
D.
Great lunch with old friends. The spinach and feta tart with salad was delicious.
P.
A great experience. Generous portions of well presented food. Pesto mushrooms absolutely superb. Highly recommend this dish.
J.
Great pub with lots of options, good inexpensive food, plenty of parking and seating inside and out. Umbrellas over outdoor tables great for sitting outdoors in the summer and relaxing with friends.
P.
Excellent service, great staff, but evening ruined by unruly kids running unchecked in the bar, some parents need a rocket up them as far consideration for others is concerned.
K.
Lovely atmosphere, excellent staff, great food.
A.
A great place to meet friends and a real pub with a Scottish theme. Great range of food and drinks. We had a great time.
J.

T.
A great old pub with a very welcoming atmosphere. The outdoor area is great in summer to relax and have some food from the restaurant
D.
Everything good except for paying for food when you have to walk out back and down steps to kitchen to pay.
P.
Great place, the food was good and there is a very good selection of beers. Staff are nice too.
L.

S.

Fantastic food and fantastic service
Speedy delivery. What more could a customer want
M.
There is something for everyone at Northcote Tavern.
You can choose to enjoy the garden bar or hang around the pub tables or sit in the shade of an umbrella on the outdoor grass area, with the chilled drink of your choice.
Northcote Tavern is the perfect stop for lunch or dinner, with its Bistro serving a wide selection of delicious foods; my personal favourites are the prawn twisters, the lamb and roast vegetable salad, and the wedges. If you really cannot decide what to choose from the Bistro menu, choose one of their selection platters. You have the option between having a surf platter or turf platter (or just get both!) Both platters are enough to make you want to come back tomorrow... I know I did.
Aside of drinks and food, the Tavern is great for family or group fun. They boast a decent sized grassy area for children to run around in (parent supervised of course) and even a shell and sand area designed for guests to bring boules/pétanque.
Other activities:
- Kareoke night.
- Raffles on Sundays.
- Join the Northcote Tavern fishing club.
- Dart Board.
- Pokie/Slot Machines.
P.
Plenty of variety, indoor outdoor and various dinning locations. Good selection of beer and wine. Handy spot if you're living that side of the bridge
S.
Good food and great outside area. Very well priced and the portion sizes are huge! Lots of parking.
G.
Comfortable and economical although menu prices have increased - would like more items around $18-25 range. Need more vegetarian options
R.
One of my favourite places to hang out, the staff are great and the pub good is fair. It's a local pub with a popular and local feel, classic and old.
J.
Classic pub, with a great outside area for soaking up the sun. Good food and good atmosphere.
D.
