Beautiful location, clean rooms, great evening meals. Breakfast was basic but they provide GF and alternative milk for cereal if requested. Hotel communal areas were cluttered with random bits that should be put away but lovely service.
M.
It had a great view with great service and extremely nice waitresses and located in a wonderful spot! My highlight was the delicious food and drinks and what made me happy is that its Dog Friendly and there is a dogs menu! The design of the restaurant and hotel is stunning, honestly could come here every weekend 🥰👍

Nice place, beautiful view, good prices, delicious food, amazing staff 🙂
M.
Grabbed some takeaway fish n chips, good service, good takeaways, no complaints 😊
S.
Lovely Pub, with a stunning view. We were there on an overcast winters day, and there was a fire going. I had the baked camembert for lunch and it was served with a lovely sourdough. Others had the fish and chips, which was lovely and quite a large serving of chips, and the ploughman‘s lunch which was large and very enjoyable. Would recommend if passing through as it’s really pretty and only around 30-40mins from the Christchurch City Centre.
P.
Decent food, lovely vistas, and friendly staff.
N.

Great place - fish & chips were spot on and owner very friendly! In fact cheapest/best value meal we've had in Christchurch....once you use the secret password/nod the meal was practically free!
n.
It was a really nice small hotel. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. And great food
r.
Recommend this place great indoor & outdoor dining ,good service good view of the harbor.
L.
Very busy place for lunch but staff very accommodating
T.
Great spot for lunch. Walked the foreshore track from Allendale then up the hill at Governors Bay for lunch and bubbles. Beautiful view looking out to sea
L.
Lovely warm spot on a cold rainy day. Friendly, helpful staff and a delicious lunch of shared plates with family.
R.
It's a lovely place, they have done well with the covid regulations. Inside is very nice, warm, good looking.
They did take a long time with our order (everyone else got there's in a reasonable time) but they gave us our meals on the house as they felt bad.
Even though that happened, the food was very yummy and I will be going back again.
There is a beautiful view and lots of space inside. The staff are very kind.
B.
Great restaurant. Cheerful service, lovely food, and wonderful view. I recommend the fish and chips !
p.
A great hotel, food, a service were outstanding.
R.
What a lovely way to spend a sunny Monday afternoon sitting on the lovely deck looking down the harbor. Food superb. Wine great. Service excellent. Great coffee. Can certainly recommend. Good value!!
V.
Food was amazing, views incredible and service was friendly but a little slow. Great atmosphere. I had the streamed vegetables and my partner had the most delicious burger ever! The fries were hot and crunchy too. A fabulous lunch, highly recommended.
C.
As a person who grew up in Governors Bay it is very special to me, the pub looks gorgeous & is well maintained the staff were lovely. While I understand the reasons behind the name change it will always be the Governors Bay Pub to me.
V.
Great food. We had fish and chips and a ploughmans. Great views over the bay. Cosy bar area with fire place.
A.
It's a beautiful vista looking over Governors Bay and my wife had a delicious Mother's Day lunch. I had the Ploughman's Lunch which was both delicious and filling.
L.
Beautiful view, and a warm, friendly vibe from venue and from staff. Good portion sizes and great flavors.
Was looking like a 5 stars rating until the gardener put his boots on the bar
P.
Another great hidden secret of a place. Nice food. Great staff. Beautiful views. I could just go on and on.
a.
Amazing meal today! HIGHLY recommended to all.
Amazing views and Staff VERY proficient and friendly!
I will be returning, next time im down in Christchurch!.
I.
Relaxing place to enjoy a drink and take in the sights.
S.
The pub is always a 5 star experience. I’ve lived in Governors Bay for 14 years so I’ve been here countless times. Never had a meal I didn’t like, portion sizes are perfect, great place for families! It’s a must try if you’re in the area.
s.
Enjoyed the food and great service
G.
Not only a great view, but excellent food, and good staff. And the beers not too bad as well.
S.
Great spot to sit outside. Good view of harbour. Good menu with quiet a big selection. Had calamari which had a good flavour but a bit tough.
K.
I love it, it is a nice friendly place
O.
Old school and super cozy hotel! The staff and owners are very friendly and you feel like home after a few nights.
The food is solid with a good wine list. We tried the grilled chicken, mixed grill plate, baked Camembert, clam chowder and the burger. All solid choices!
The balcony rooms are fabulous with shared bathroom, shower, and laundry (old school remember!) and you basically have your run of the breakfast room to bring up coffee and enjoy the view.
G.
A great place to stay. The service was friendly and the food was amazing. We plan to come back.
T.
Had a great lunch here. Lovely outside seating areas. The service was good, food came fast. And a nice view to top it all off. One of the only pubs/bars/hotels/restaurants in Christchurch that I know of with grass outside seating areas. About as "British Pub" as you can get in NZ I think!
C.
I enjoyed what looked like and was the ideal tasty breakfast. A pile of richly ripe smashed avocados, topped with two fresh chuck eggs, perfectly (IMHO) poached, graced with crumbly fresh salty feta. With as a backdrop a view of the Pacific ocean sea fret rolling magically into Lyttleton bay.
My photograph 'is not worthy'.
T.
Location Great, Food So-So
Governor's Bay Hotel is the perfect setting for a lazy Summer lunch. We'd been there before and were looking forward to returning. Luckily for us, it wasn't too busy and it was just blissful sitting in the beer garden with a couple of cold ones. The menu has changed and not for the better. Not a great selection for a vegetarian and a lot of the dishes seemed a bit heavy for a Spring menu. I felt the prices were on the high side for pub lunches to especially the gnocchi at $24. Not sure what happened to the spinach but it was non-existent. I would have much rather had a side salad as the gnocchi was pretty rich and stodgy in the end. My companion's burger was dry but the egg was fried perfectly. Shame the salad consisted of a couple of thick stalked lettuce leaves. We were planning on having coffee and dessert until the "Party Bus" arrived - that put an end to the relaxed atmosphere. I pity the guests that had just checked in. The dessert options looked good but we'll never know.
S.
I think the hotel is 4 stars and restaurant is 3 stars for me. Free laundry if staying 2+ nights which is awesome. Shared bathrooms, but it was never a problem for us. The room was nice, though if you get too hot you have to choose between opening the window and having some road noise or feeling a little warm. The beer on hand was good and the food was just fine.
A.
Fantastic views and a nice menu for lunch. Excellent historic building with a nice ambience. It was a bit chilly inside on the cold winter day that we visited. Adequate range of beers pin tap but nothing special.
W.
Awesome views, very lovely staff. Brilliant food (apart from the chips being too salty). A very satisfying and enjoyable place to visit.
B.
Had dinner there with my work colleagues. The gurnard fish that I ordered was cooked nicely, full of flavours but very small portion size. If this is a lunch meal, that's perfect. But for dinner, it was not enough even when I had entree and dessert.
Good environment, friendly and helpful staff. Wonderful place to hang out with friends, family and colleagues.
G.
Awsome great food, beautiful views nice friendly staff.
R.
Very nice meals. Great service
A.
Had a great dinner there on Christmas Eve. Lovely venue with a view out to the bay. Delicious food and nice friendly staff.
H.
Lovely and relaxing spot with view of the harbour. Went there for lunch, had the mushroom soup which was seasoned nicely but was visually unappealing with butter separated floating on the top of it and only 1 thin piece of bread.
My partner had the Ploughman's lunch which was ok apart from a limp salad with no dressing and no butter with the bread and meger amount of cheese.......
Shame about the lack of detail with the food and the very noisy waitress who constantly banged and crashed behind the bar while I was trying to order.
L.
Great place to stop.Food is generous and tasty and a view over the harbour to boot.Staff were friendly and efficient.
L.
Lovely place. Great selection of craft beer. Food was not to the standard it was on our last visits. Service was just on average as quite inexperienced.
D.
Been eating here for years, consistent quality service and food. To me the governors Bay Hotel is a unique experience in a special place in NZ. Thanks Jeremy and claire for making it so.
S.
Nice cold drink on a hot day.
L.
I have only had a beer here, but it is a very nice place. Plenty of seats on the verandah looking over the bay.
P.
Wow, what a wonderful place to eat and stay. The rooms are gorgeous, the view is phenomenal and the food, excellent. We had a wonderful and restful couple of days, enjoying the scenery and peacefulness of the bay and consuming delicious food and drink.
T.
Thanks for the yummy food guys and the views are just beautiful!!! Great service and atmosphere thanks guys!!
M.
Very nice spot, excellent food, friendly service, but I'm not a fan of craft beers.
D.
Love this place. Tradition to stpp for a drink when putting flowers on the graves.
Serving lady was awesome
I.
Excellent place to go on a rainy Thursday afternoon, crackling fire, cracking barmaid Dee, and great atmosphere provided by the cool soul music playlist. Cheers to you Governors Bay Hotel.
M.
We love coming here. You guys are so great and accommodating. Our club will always recommend you highly and keep planning our trips here! Friendly staff, great food and service.
K.
A lovely spot overlooking Lyttelton Harbour. Friendly staff and delicious food. The beer garden is particularly lovely in Summer. There is also a pool table and darts available inside.
P.
Great view. Fish and Chips for lunch. So good. Best Tartare Sauce ever.
M.
Stayed here one night with my wife as part of our road trip around New Zealand's South Island. We were impressed by the investment done in bringing this vintage 1870 hotel up to modern standards while maintaining its historic charm; the shared toilet and bathroom down the hall notwithstanding. We didn't care because we were the only guests that night and we had the entire upstairs to ourselves! The room, bed, and facilities were all clean and comfortable. There was a bit of early-evening noise from the pub below and the traffic in the street. The pub food was good. One suggestion: add a sink in the toilet room so one doesn't have to walk down to the shower room to wash hands after using the toilet. :-)
G.
Beautiful outlook and location. Beautiful historic building. Good food with good service and good staff. Loses the sun early as it's south facing with a huge hill behind it unfortunately.
b.
Great food and great service
S.
we like to come here on a sunny day and the staff are always friendly and attentive. Good service and great food also wonderful location. Even good service in the weekdays and we like early lunches and this place has been very accommodating
K.
Stopped in with friends for a mid afternoon pint....very impressed!
S.
Lovely view and restaurant
r.
Wonderful food with a magical view. The specials changes frequently so always different options. Highly recommended
M.
Nice place, great food & drinks! Love the new name too :)
J.
Great view, nice beers, friendly staff. Definitely worth a stop for refreshments if your adventuring around the bays
B.
Comfortable pub with fairly good food although $38 for dinner mains is absolutely criminal. I've been to upmarket Italian restaurants in Sydney and never paid anything near that. Unbelievable.
W.
Food was excellent but service was very slow due to a large group arriving without booking. Would definitely go back again.
R.
Had a very tasty lunch here, good service, fast meal delivery... thanks team, was a rather memorable moment in time
B.
Food was average. Luke warm ribs served with fries . The only redeeming feature is the view, which is gorgeous. Beer is Monteiths on tap, some good craft beers too but they are expensive.
C.
Historic Governors Bay Hotel built in 1870. Expansive views of Governors Bay. Great food and beverages.well worth 30 minute drive south of Christchurch.
B.
A chilly day we went there , but can inagine on a sunny day it would be great to sit eat and chat
The meal menu at the time of day we went was limited, but between a few of us had a good selection , and were all impressed !
Great service and friendly staff
Go and take a look !
B.
Great place, just don't order near closing when the chef is obviously not in the mood to cook. More low carb options would be great.
R.
The food was great & wonderfull surrounding s.
No ideal for wheel chair access & no disabled toilets very distressing for one of our group.
E.
Awesome environment, sort of like a backpackers but you get your own private space. Lovely people and great location, restaurant/bar downstairs is nice, especially liked the chess board
L.
Great food friendly helpful staff very relaxing lunch with my bestie
B.
Nice friendly staff. Good food.

A quaint old hotel where Bellbirds and Tuis can always be heard. Has a nice outdoor setting for a brew in the sun. Meals served are of a reasonable restaurant standard.
N.
The restuarant here is amazing. Delicious food, great prices and friendly staff. I recommend the mussles!
A.
Really cool old school style hotel with awesome views over Lyttelton Harbour and Banks Peninsula. Didn't stay a night but had a beer in the evening sun on the expansive deck
J.
Great place for a weekend drive. Great views of lyttelton harbour. Etc. Plenty of out door tables. And good food. Cheers
K.
Nice food, recommend booking a table if you wan't to sit outside for lunch, gets busy.
A.
Went in on a Tuesday, at around midday. Great food, great service, lovely garden area. Around $25 for a decent meal.
P.
I so enjoyed a light snack & drink at this Hotel out on the lawn...if u have time do check out the book near the bar with fabulous history of Bank's Peninsular.
A.
An excellent dining experience with top food and nice wine/cider.
P.
Food was fantastic. Staff very helpful and accommodating. Room a bit small and toilet and showers are shared which is the only downfall.😀
L.
Beautiful location and views, good food
T.
Beautiful views great service dog friendly its like sitting in a back yard overlooking akaroa
S.
Lovely outdoor seating. Menu was nice. No table service outside. Lovely staff.
P.
Music too loud. 2 patrons moving their table right in front of the log fire, with no respect for others. Food and service good.
G.
A very enjoyable afternoon, the food and atmosphere were great.
D.
The rooms are not ensuited. But if you are comfortable with this, the Governors Bay Hotel is a great tip. It is very clean, the staff is familiar and you have direct access to the Bar and Restaurant which serves really good food. We were there for four nights to be close to Christchurch. From Govenors Bay to Christchurch it's just a 20 minutes drive by car. The View is great, even in the night.
The rooms are equipped with Wireless Internet, a Flatscreen TV, a washbasin and a queen-size bed. You also have access to the balcony with its great view to the Governors Bay. The Hotel has two separate showers and two toilets. There is also a Laundry with a dryer for your clothes and a parking lot for your car. You can have a continental breakfast in a small room on the floor wich is equipped with coffee-making-facilities or outside on the balcony.
Give it a try!
P.
Visited today 20/02/18. Great views down harbour and a huge meal beautifully cooked we had fish and chips and salad.

A.
Stayed here back in February for a few days, Jeremy is a great host, and the pub is a good spot to grab a drink and chat with some locals.
A.
Good food and friendly staff.
L.
Lovely relaxed atmosphere on this quiet warm night, selection of beers is fine and the selection of food robust and traditional
C.
Classic, warm and welcoming country hotel. Stunning views of Lyttleton Harbour. Great selection of beverages.
B.
Very nice friendly place to eat out. The staff were pleasant and the food was nice, I would recommend the governors bay hotel.
R.
A little rustic but clean and tidy. I think a just going to Harvey Norman and buying a Wi-Fi extender would solve the problem rather than spending time writing about how it is in the throws of being solved.
E.
Great venue, friendly staff and perfect for a weekend drink on the Balcony overlooking the harbor.
F.
Probably the best fish and chips I've ever had. Lovely venue.
M.
