Reviews of Pomeroy's Old Brewery Inn
E.
I have dined at Pomeroys during a recent 7 day visit to Christchurch (3 evenings in a row), the atmosphere is warm country English pub with excellent Kiwi service hard wired into crafted beer and Soho house food, yes it’s a dichotomy and every bit of it is delicious, hearty and wrapped in a welcome that certain to make your New Zealand experience memorable and importantly unforgettable
M.
Great brews on tap! Always something new to choose. French fries were great, beer was great, nice atmosphere. You have to be quick to get a table though it usually involves standing around or shuffling around a bit. The lounge is dog friendly which makes it super awesome! I wish they would have a few dog beds around though as the dogs that were inside had to lay on the hard floor. They could also use a few more vegan/vegetarian options on the menu, although there is one or two items available. Good place to grab a drink!
A.
Really awesome meal's chilled out atmosphere best eastern suburbs pup by miles lovely staff too thanks 👍
C.
Absolutely lovely beers and so much variety!! We only had bar snacks as they start serving main meals at 5 but open at 3 and the bar snacks are amazing!! Such good pork crackling!! We all love it here and enjoy the cozy English atmosphere. Thank you for the lovely 50th Birthday treat😊
D.
Excellent meal, excellent service..... Lovely atmosphere. Ordered the chicken wings to start and beef burgers as main with Nanny goat Pinot noir and ginger beer.
Chicken wings were fantastic a definite recommendation!!!
And the beef burgers, 1x standard 1x gluten free, were both flavour full and filling with the fries just topping it off nicely. We also added an extra pottle of gravy which was awesome with the chips.
Our server was also fantastic, helpful, friendly and up for a bit of banter..... Really was an excellent experience..... Pomeroy's a define recommend for dinner!!!!!
M.
Honestly if you haven’t been here yet you’re missing out. Everything from the friendly attentive staff to the meals (yes they cater to dietary requirements too) The fish is always our go to! Thanks team
N.
A lovely American style pub with some awesome beers!
We both ordered Behemoth On Top Cherry, and I am not even kidding it is the best beer I've ever tasted! I loved the creamy cherry vanilla flavor, and on top of that the beer has 8.2% alcohol! Super efficient and tasty drinking!
The price is $13 for 0.425l, which is not that expensive for New Zealand.
My friend ordered some fries and let me taste some. They were awesome and they came with 3 different sauces!
The story doesn't end there. Just as we are about to leave, a waitress comes up and offers us some complimentary hot bread and sliced cheese which was also awesome!
I really recommend this bar. I sure am gonna return!
In the photos you can check out all the tap beers and ciders they offer.
H.
Great food, amazing beers, especially their beer baroness range and awesome staff. Always welcoming and great prices.
M.
Great food, lively atmosphere. If you're looking for a warm place to share with others in a thematic surrounding, this is the place to be 👍
D.
Visitor to Christchurch. Have to agree with others posting about the pulled pork sandwich. Its extremely tasty. Really well done right down to the bread. Nice work. Accompanied by their own pilsner which I would describe as being a solid effort. And while we are at it a big shout out to the staff. Great bunch.
R.
Great beers, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, good pub grub. Oh and dog friendly.
P.
Great beer selection that is always rotating meaning there's always something for everyone. Staff are always amazing and happy to share their knowledge of the current tap selection. Food offerings are also top notch.
D.
Super British style pub with real cask beers on draft. food was also very good, had the sole over corn couscous and it was done perfectly. Would be a 5 but they were out of the special and service could be a bit better.
S.
Great place. Cool atmosphere. Yummy food especially the garlic fries. 😋
W.
Nice, warm, friendly, local pub with great pub food. Great range of beers. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Would definitely come back again.
D.
Met some old friends here and the warm, cost atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for a catch up. The amazing selection of beer and good selection of whiskeys made it an enjoyable afternoon. For snacks, the pork cracking was perfect. Good mix of locals and visits and helpful staff. Will visit again. One of the best in Christchurch.
C.
Enjoyed the atmosphere and food. Disappointed another hospitality host doesn't offer a 0% beer to buy. Many restaurants and hotels are offering it as an option and with an ever increasing number of suppliers producing it, it should be an available option at all establishments.
E.
So much tap beer selection! The bartenders are amazing, the food is well matched and satisfying, and the beer - the beer! Come here for the best tap variety. Always rotating and featuring new tastes. Live music frequently, and candle-lit booths, as well as a full menu and a dinner area. Great outdoor seating as well.
W.
A warm welcome awaited, with the lad behind the bar happy to offer up a tasting flight of their uniformly interesting homebrews on tap, when I said I was a newby in town, I think six in all!
The kitchen was on form too with a hearty seafood chowder, and cracked pepper offered unprompted by the waitstaff. As with every pub, sorely devoid of punters, tho the beer gaden off the the side seemed pretty busy!
K.
Great beer selection. We only had snack food but from what we had and saw food was pretty good. Live music on the Sunday afternoon we went.
J.
The steak was exactly as it should be. The place was just so extremely noisy that is was hard to enjoy it
P.
Very nice, cozy corner pub with more beer/cider selections than you can shake a stick at. As is typical with every New Zealander I've encountered, the folks here are very friendly. Stop in if you're nearby!
L.
Great craft beer selection, probably the best in Christchurch. Cozy indoor space. Lots of parking
K.
First time visiting Pomeroy, there was a few vegetarian food dishes for lunch; Deep fried cornflake cauliflower dish which was very tasty. The service was excellent and social distancing between tables.
H.
An excellent example of a traditional English pub. Wonderful service, and delicious food! Huge selection of tap beers.
N.
Nice enough environment, ok for families but the slightly drunk bros at the next table a little sweary at times.
Vegetarian/Vegan options are EXTREMELY limited.
J.
Fine beers, great atmosphere and fine food. Will be glad when the live music comes back. Probably the best pub in Christchurch
A.
Good bar food and an awesome beer selection (the board is color coded by style so you know what's what). But its the staff that really makes the place special - I went on a weeknight and again on a busy night but staff were still eager to help me try something new both times.
C.
What a great beer they serve! I had stout called ‘Darkside...’ something :p and I should recommend their pork skin cracklings with apple puree sauce. Eye widening taste!
C.
It's a great pub. Lovely, cosy interior and great craft beer it does get busy though.
D.
Amazing selection of brews and food is fantastic too.
R.
Felt like having a nice cozy dinner tonight and the staff and atmosphere here did not disappoint. Friendly service with a little banter made us feel right at home. The Southland Lamb was tender and cooked to perfection. Will be going back again very soon.
e.
Wonderful place, lovely staff and delicious food. I love that they are dog friendly and even suggested my husband and I collect our dog from the car and bring him in while we had dinner. The staff member (wish I could remember her name) went out of her way to help. Will definitely return and recommend.
W.
Five stars is not enough. Aged ribeye amazing sides, fabulous beers and donuts and coffee with superior service. When in Christchurch this is a mandatory dining experience. Thank you!!!
G.
I dream about this place. Do not miss it if you’re in Christchurch.
It’s a cozy pub atmosphere with lots of locals. They have a great, rotating selection of craft beers. The bartenders know their stuff and will give you solid recommendations. You MUST order the burger (dinner menu starts at 5). The other menu items are wonderful and fresh, elevated pub food. But the burger is just too good not to order every time. It’ll put you in a food coma but sticking around for good live music will help fight through!
I’ve been to Christchurch on short vacations twice in two years and I’ve come to this place multiple times. It’s that good.
B.
Loved the beer menu, heavy on the craft beers. Pork crackle for entree was simple and devine. If you love beer, this is THE place.
J.
Loved the vibe and the building. Very cosy interior and were really happy to see the dog friendly environment.
Our first time here and we are avid beer drinkers. At first the selection seemed daunting but your awesome bar staff PK made our visit very memorable. Had great banter while he figured out what to give us to taste. Very impressed.
We will see you again as there’s a lot more beer to be tried
J.
Awesome, plus it let's you take your dog. And no dog fights! You can't beat that.
P.
Loving the craft beer.,beer garden, complimentary bread and cheese and meeting random doggies. Bar staff brilliant at guiding us through the selection of over 100 beers with some free tastings.
E.
Super friendly and attentive service, very impressed! Amazing burger and great beer. Thank you!!
H.
Awesome place, best dish and chips I had and good beer. Overall vibe of the place is very good.
M.
Great pub atmosphere, freindly staff. Feels like a place you could make your regular, feels safe without the shady TAB sports bar feel. Not particularly expensive but not cheap. Oh, and the bowl of fries I had was some of the best I'd ever had. Definitely worth stopping in for. I'll be back for sure.
J.
Excellent old english tavern vibe. Lots of IPA and craft beer selections.
G.
Lovely atmosphere, menu limited compared to previous visits, but enjoyable. Loved the cauliflower items
J.
Enjoyed the atmosphere. Service, beverages and food were all top notch
S.
Busy friday night but waitstaff were friendly, attentive and helpful. The food was amazing.
I had roasted free range pork belly with kumara and it was a taste explosion in my mouth.
The donuts for dessert were great.
D.
Went there for dinner and the service was excellent. Scott was on the door and was very professional and nice.
Carlos served us and he to was very professional and a real hard cash.
I had the Calli burger and Bruce had chicken burger. They were both yummy. Thumbs up and next time in CHCH you will see us 😋
J.
Great place for really solid craft beers and a chat. It's usually a little crowded for me, but as I have said in other reviews I cant fault a place for being popular. It's not overcrowded due to the layout, which is excellent, it's just popular. I'm a fan. Well worth stopping g by with friends for a drop.
P.
Luckily the kitchen was open late (past 21:00), so we had the ribeye and burger. OUTSTANDING! Fantastic beer selection. Now we know what the fuss is all about!
L.
Traditional Old English style brewery Fantastic selection of beers. Well priced flight of beer paddle x4 beers. Loved the double IPA. Garlic fries and aioli pretty tasty side too.
R.
Nice atmosphere but super expensive drinks.
P.
Excellent place great outdoor area numerous craft beers on tap 👍
K.
Fresh, tasty food. Lovely old building with lots of history.
E.
Friendly staff good selection of beer and fast service
성.
Best Pub in the city. Lovely food n craft beer.
K.
Lovely upmarket pub, Has a very wide and varied selection of craft beers, also has some really tasty food. The chips and gravy is one of the best bar snacks they have along with the pork crackling. The mains are also really good. Great value
C.
Great selection of Kiwi craft beer with some good food offerings (try the jalapeno dip) in an old and cozy (or is it cosy, I'm a Yank and we use z in place of s) pub atmosphere.
J.
Food is good, little bit pricy but yum.
S.
Fantastic as always. Do try the snack food... very very good
P.
Delicious food and beverages. Good pricing and pork crackle with apple relish is yummo. Love the outdoor area, and the fact it is dog friendly to bring your pooch with you.
A.
Extensive selection of NZ craft beers. Pilsners, sours, IPA’s, porters, stouts and ciders were all on the menu when I visited. The Nashville chicken burger 🍔 was outstanding! A generous portion of crispy tender chicken goujons presented with just the right amount of chilli kick. Accompanying fries were on point too.
Staff are warm and accommodating. Relaxed atmosphere with a range of seating options. If you wish to chill out on a leather sofa or sit at a table your needs can be catered to. Justifiably popular pub. Thoroughly recommended!
M.
Love this place. Admittedly, I am a little bias because I met my wife to be here but we have always been met with amazing service. Food has always been good and large in quantity.
The staff treated us INCREDIBLY when we went back for dinner last time. They unnecessarily went over and above to make our experience extra special after we told them how we met.
Special mention to Kendra, one of the bar staff. You were amazing and are an asset to the business.
J.
An institution in Christchurch. Beautiful english style pub with one of the best outdoor areas in town. Pet friendly and the staff are all so friendly. Great place to spend some time on the weekend with friends.
G.
A fantastic pub, great selection of beers, think they have about 30 on tap and are more than happy to let you sample a few before deciding on what you would like! Ample of inside seating as well as a nice courtyard outside area which has heaters for those colder evenings! quite often has live music which again just adds to the great atmosphere, the staff are always friendly, knowledgable and chatty! I've eaten there a few times and always exceeds my expectations, as a Brit the chips in gravy is wholesome and ohhhh so tasty, the Korean fried chicken burger is to die for and even tried the herb and gruyère gnocchi recently and it was excellent, far exceeds pub food any day!
L.
Good food, service and alcohol. We both had the cauliflower burger which was huge. You definitely get a lot of food for your $$
G.
Great beer. Good atmosphere. Dog friendly. A great institution.
H.
It was like going back in time walking into this pub. Old English style, done fairly well. The atmosphere was jovial, albeit a bit rowdy from the large group of men in the corner, which made me retreat from the table by the fire for a table in the quieter restaurant side. Have to say the fire was a bit lack luster anyway, and wasn't pumping out any significant heat.
The staff were exceptional in how welcome they made you feel and their service impeccable. I had popped into Pomeroy's after having an early dinner elsewhere, because I felt like a mulled wine before retreating home, and found them on Google under mulled wine close to my home.
I am a bit of a mulled wine connoisseur, and make my own for parties. Their mulled wine was too sweet and not spicy enough for me, but it was soothing nonetheless. I felt like a light meal so ordered the fried cauliflower with ranch hot sauce and gherkins. That was a mistake on my part. The food came out quickly and I asked for no hot sauce. The cauliflower was cooked fine, but the lack of flavour with just a smattering of another sauce, left it bland to eat.
I decided to check out the dessert menu after rejecting the fried cauliflower. To my pleasant surprise there was chocolate dulce on the menu! It was perfectly smooth and creamy, and cracking the chocolate coating around the outside with my spoon, was the piste de resistance of my whole evening. Just divine!
I would recommend coming here with a group of friends, for a warm and friendly, relaxed old world vibe, who are a very hungry crowd, as portion sizes are huge!
N.
Pulled pork sandwich with Vanilla and Coffee Black IPA. This place hits the spot. There was even some fish for Mum. Lovely to pull out the sketchbook and watercolors and get a sketch of pops telling stories. Highly recommend.
M.
This is my favourite pub in Christchurch. It feels much like the pubs I am used to back in Britain, and it also happens to have a very respectable choice of excellent craft beers. I appreciate that there are also lower ABV beers available as well.
I have not tried the burgers but they look amazing. The wings are great, as are the pork shavings. Note that earlier in the evening they have a limited menu.
To top it off, the staff are always happy and provide great service. I always look forward to the next time I visit. Thanks guys 👍🍻
R.
Could have been five starts but the amount of salt on the chips with the burger was a bit excessive. The burger was very nice and the staff very attentive. Enjoyed a few excellent beers from the huge range they had. Not too busy so easy to keep the ‘social distances’. Enjoyed what is probably my last trip to a pub for a while 🙁
P.
Nice and cozy pub serving proper imperial pints. They have a large choice of beer + a couple of ciders. The staff is really nice too and know some history about the building itself (used to be a brewery).
The food is really nice, too. Portions are huge. The burgers can easily be shared between two people. The pork crackling starter was too big for the five of us 😀
N.
Freaking love this place. Cosy plus 31 taps of great beer. Good selection of for too - go the pork scratchings
H.
Quintessential Kiwi interpretation of Ye Ole English pub, but better!
F.
Beautiful atmosphere 👌 amazing service ❤ great experience 👍
M.
Friendly and professional staff, tasty food and wide range of beer. I’d highly recommend.
J.
Fantastic range of beer and food - the staff are great also. Highly recommended.
N.
Awesome food, great atmosphere, brilliant staff... winner 🏆
J.
Great food, but a bit pricey for what it is. Enjoyed the Korean chicken burger and the battered warehou and chips. Fish was cooked just right, fresh and tender. The chicken burger came with cheese that was oddly dry on the edge but tasted amazing. I had a Pomeroy Lager which was good but seemed like it needed another couple weeks or more, reminded me of good homebrew tasted before it had finished brewing with a bit of an unfinished yeast aftertaste.
D.
Great beer, great food, great service & awesome atmosphere - what more could you ask?? Nice (wide) selection of NZ & other beers - pints, "mid-pints" (425ml), and 1/2 pints - haven't seen that before! Same for food - small, medium, and large plates - with very nice selection. Wait staff VERY helpful with both beer & food selection. Old English pub atmosphere.
J.
An absolute must visit. A large selection of beers all of which we tried were delicious. The staff are super friendly and really good at their jobs, so even ordering at peak times was no hassle. The atmosphere is incredibly cozy and comfortable, not too dark , loud or crowded. Pull up a seat next to the fire and get toasty or in the armchairs next to the bookshelves and read some old issues of National Geographic. Just make sure to stop by for a pint.
J.
Superb beer selection in an historic location. Garden bar a smoking venue so not really attractive. Music was a solo guitarist playing olde English folk music. Family environment, nice old pics on the walls.
D.
Great atmosphere and range of beers.
J.
Excellent food options and an extensive local beer list make this a great spot. The lamb special was amazing and the steak was quite good as well. Great service from friendly staff who were very accommodating of our the children. In the back room they had a few toys and games to keep everyone busy until our food arrived. Highly recommend Pomeroy's!
L.
These guys have the absolute best response to level 2 - delta in all of Christchurch. Mask on, sign in, sit down, mask off and you can forget that COVID even exists for an hour or several. Good job team!
M.
We wandered into the pub as we were staying around the corner and were blown away! One of our best meals in 3 months in NZ.
The bar area was packed as there was a band playing, but we were directed to a nice side room with plenty of seats for our meal. We had the burger and haloumi curry and both were expertly cooked with really well thought out flavors and presentation. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable and there was a large selection of draft beer; really everything you can ask for when you're out for a meal after a long day.
A.
With an 8month old and 2.5 year old we find hard to get out for dinner these days, but today we visited Pomeroy for a roast dinner.
The staff were very accommodating, and we really felt welcome with kids. The roast dinner was yummy and we all enjoyed it. We will definitely be back. Thanks guys.
A.
The beer and food are delicious but it's the service that impressed me most. We arrived a few minutes before opening and were quickly welcomed in from the cold. When we weren't quite sure about a cider we ordered it was replaced with a different one, no questions asked. Everything about our visit made us feel welcome and appreciated. A great little pub, will definitely be back.
S.
Fantastic local pub with awsome food and great craft beers, plus they brew there own beers, highly recommended, when your in Christchurch go have lunch dinner and enjoy some local history on the wall, you will know wat I mean when your there.
M.
Nice beer.. And the food was prefect.. I had the seafood chowder and fish and chips.. Reasonable price.. Will go again for sure..
S.
My favourite pub to visit. Great atmosphere old English style pub, classic decor and good indoor and outdoor seating options (though they fill up quick on busy nights). Outstanding rotating beer selection, works well for a casual pint in the afternoon or a big night. Prices are on the higher side, but in line with craft beer elsewhere. The staff are all incredible, very friendly and willing to help select the perfect beer with tastings. Also on some nights platters of cheese and bread are brought around. Always a pleasant time to be had, highly reccomend.
L.
A pint and some fries with gravy was the perfect thing after a solid day of tripping around Canterbury. Bar staff friendly and helpful, even on a busy Saturday evening
N.
One of, if not the best craft beer bars in town with the added beauty of an English pub aesthetic.
Z.
Personally don't like brewed beer but by saying that had a good beer last night. Customer service.....funny thing had a beer bath from a staff but nothing to be concern about...happens....good vibe will go again
J.
Tasty food, cold beers; you don't need much more than this to be a good pub but Poms still offers more. The constantly rotating beers flavours means there is always something new and exciting to try, and with a handy flavour guide at the bar it's easy to pick something you are sure to like. The knowledgeable staff are also able to help you out if you really are stuck deciding.
Dog friendly is a big bonus in summer and in winter because we can always pop on down with our pooch with no worries.
N.
Great food with a massive selection of craft beers
N.
Good range of good beer, excellent food
D.
Great little spot with a good selection of NZ beers. Had dinner and both dishes were great
n.
Very nice ambience especially for a Sunday roast very much like an English pub. Food was good it would have been great to have a vegetarian option for the roast dinner rather than just vegetable s. However it was tasty and enjoyed. Sticky toffee pudding was enjoyed very much by kids
N.
Great place to visit. We love it because we can take our little Shetland Sheep dog in to the bar with us instead of having to leave her in the car. She lies quietly on the floor under the table while we enjoy a drink. We now mainly frequent restaurants and bars that are pet friendly.
M.
Ciders cold, fries are hot. They allow dogs, but only outside at level 2.
A.
Not the cheapest pub in the world, but one definitely gets what one pays for. Great spot, great beers and lovely friendly staff. Definitely among the top 3 bars in Christchurch in my opinion.
N.
It's a fav pub to locals and visitors alike. Poms has a consistent supply if excellent selection of beers from around the country, the staff have a bit of character and food also excellent.
A.
Great service and food, coupled with a really interesting selection of beers. Found a quiet corner and really enjoyed an Epic IPA and a chowder
S.
Got to be one of the best pub experiences in the country, and the food is very high quality
E.
Amazing food and atmosphere, service in the restuarant is fantastic!
D.
Always good, staff are great, foods amazing, beer selection is the best in Christchurch and its dog friendly. The perfect pub, pity it isn't within walking distance of my house.
A.
Good place to have a drink and relax. Cosy and ideal for a winters day
A.

A great casual atmosphere with an excellent range of craft beers and delicious chips with gravy. Some shaded outdoor seating and several quiet corners.
A.
Lovely pub atmosphere, with a range of seating including comfy leather couches. Dog friendly :)
A great range of NZ craft beers and ciders on tap.
The garlic butter fries were amazing!!
No wifi available.
T.
Great food, awesome service, good time was had.
D.
Fabulous beer and food.menu, staff were amazing, requested emergency chips and gravey during a very busy evening service and they accomodated with happy smiles understanding that we were starving.
Amazing food and drink.experience
C.
Great place for a cool afternoon beer with friends. You will literally feel you are in your friend's living room or backyard. Great customer service :)
J.
Great meals - we had their burgers. Super friendly staff and amazing choice of beers and ciders.
E.
The waiter coukd have known a little more about the beer and wine on offer.
C.
What a fantastic venue! Excellent food and a wide craft beer variety - what a brilliant place!
B.
Great collection of beer on tap and very helpful staff who can recommend one based on your tastes. The food was delicious too. Can't go seeing with the salmon. For the more adventurous try the bone marrow - surprisingly good.
N.
We had our staff Christmas meal at Pomeroys on Saturday evening. 13 of us and we all couldn’t get over how amazing the food was. The menu was way beyond expectation, the staff were awesome and so attentive. Highly recommend, thanks so much team!
D.
Great beer selection and the live music was fun.
S.
Great atmosphere and the food was exceptional in quality! All the food on the plate complimented each other and although they probably had many dishes to serve as it was very busy it appeared that they had take care to plate up and cook everything to perfection. Good beer and good food - don’t think anything more needs to be said!
N.
Poms has become venerable. There was a knocking shop in the building years before, and it's survived earthquakes to become a wonderful fixture that people can rely on. There's a great range of drinks, always being updated and yummy bar snacks. In times when it often feels like we're losing things, Poms is verging on being an institution.
C.
Definitely one of the best craft beer pubs in NZ!
Always a great range of taps to suit anyone's preferred style but sometimes the Beer Gods align and there's a feast of favourites.
Great beer range.
Great atmosphere.
Great venue.
Great staff.
Great pub!
D.
Great food, service & atmosphere.
M.
A legendary pub, one of my spiritual homes! Wide range of beer, great atmosphere and welcoming service.
M.
I absolutely adore this place. From the friendly bar staff to the impeccable food, and from the endless beer selection to the warm cosy Old English Pub atmosphere. I return often for a refreshing pint, and in particular, tonight I returned for a Fish Burger which I couldn't fault. If you're in the area - highly recommend to pop in. Cheers. 🍻
T.
I came here on holidays with my partner and tried the venison off the winter menu with one of their coffee flavoured dark beers, hands down the best thing I've ever eaten. Delicious dessert and friendly staff, wishing I had a second stomach to do it over again. 12/10, highly recommend.
z.
Great Brew Pub with lovely house made Craft Beer(additional beers from around the country)and Restaurant Quality food.
P.
Easily one of the best pubs in New Zealand. Great food menu, amazing range of beers, superb hospitality. Worth a detour
I.
What's not to love about this place, anywhere with an evolving mix of 30+ beers - including hand pull cask - deserves recognition, right?
So you might think that it's full of sad men drinking copious amounts of beer and lamenting about failed relationships and cars. Wrong. It's frequented by a diverse mix of life loving people and is always packed, not just because of the beer, but the great team that run the place and its unique ambience in this city.
It's not just about the alcohol either because Victoria more than knows her way around a kitchen. The menu and quality of food is gastro-pub standard, which might explain why the restaurant tables (for every size of party) are always full, from each school night to the sabbath. My son had his farewell dinner here last month, he had a beautiful Beef Wellington & I went for a traditional roast pork dinner. The servings were generous & food so good, my son polished off his plate before eating half of my roast!
If you miss this heritage brick pub on your travels, with a full length wooden bar, it's vast array of beers and vibe in abundance, you'll miss out... but it leaves more room for me to keep squeezing in!
W.
Lovely food. Great service. It was challenging to talk with the loudness of the band. Difficult to have the right balance for all patrons understandably. Our booking at 7 quite early to have a band??
A.
The best range of top quality beers and some of the best meals in Christchurch. For me it's in the top 3 craft beer bars in the country, and at that point it's too hard to pick a number 1. Lovely people make this place extra special and the accommodation next door makes it an even better spot if you're in town.
S.
Best pub in Christchurch, with the city's best burger. A+ service, food and atmosphere. Absolutely love that it is dog friendly too.
F.
Very rusty, nice, comfortable interieur! Large variety of beers! Something for everyone :) Amazing stuff - friendly! Best guest service! Good food! Not THAT cheap but not overpriced either - from a backpacker's perspective.... :P
L.
Nice bar, huge range of beer that keeps on changing never the same. Great bar atmosphere with restaurant attached for formal sitting.
A.
Amazing food! Like if you want pub for on steroids, this is your place! 33 beers on taps, you honestly can't go wrong! One of the top places to visit in Christchurch for sure. 👌
C.
Went for evening meal. The service was quick which was somewhat impressive since the place was jam packed, even standing room was hard to find, due to a high profile rugby game. Limited selection of main meals and only 4 desserts. Enjoyed the food and felt comfortably content after a main meal and pudding.
R.
Outstanding beer selection on tap here. Fries are especially delicious as well.
The place does get very busy/noisy on popular nights so get in early if you want a table.
A.
Good food and a huge selection of beers
T.
The best pub in Christchurch. All the food is good but the pulled pork sandwich is amazing. Good local beer list too.
R.
Great beer, great service, I food was great, only my taste buds let me down, but everyone loved the food.
A.
Great atmosphere and service. Large selection of beers from around New Zeeland which change regularly. During busy periods staff even bring around bread and cheese to ensure no one is drinking on en empty stomach. If you have a group of four+ coming, it's worth booking a table, it can get very busy around happy hour.
S.
This is a warm, welcoming pub with a great atmosphere and an excellent choice of beers and ciders. Knowledgeable, friendly staff who are happy to recommend a tipple and an onsite brewery, which ensures the freshest, finest barrels are served. Lovely, lively atmosphere and a great place to spend a night with friends.
C.
Delectable, charming and courteous staff. Not to forget an honourable mention that all houndies are welcomed with open arms....what a treat.
See you next time I am in CHCH.
M.
Amazing food, nibbles, beers and service. Great place to be on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
E.
Best hot chips, best beer, best meals. Favorite pub experience out! There is outside seating on a hot afternoon and a cosy interior for a cold winters Sunday. Also the ideal place to bring your chess set and beat your partner.
K.
The best pub in Christchurch. Great food and 31 craft beers on tap. One of the few historical brick buildings left in the city post February 2011 earthquake. Great staff and family friendly (especially weekend afternoons)
H.
Love Poms for an easy catch up with friends. Such a great tap list. Friendly staff and good vibes.
J.
Really fun pub. Loved that there weren't TV's on everywhere like in most pubs,I could actually hear the friends I went there to have a good time with.
Played some pool. The food was great. Everyone had a good time. The brisket was wonderful, the goat cheese was a little too much goat cheese and nothing to go with it.
B.
Awesome vibe and fantastic food! We tried a blueberry lager with our burgers.
D.
It's cozy, there are many different craft beers to chose from and staff is super friendly.
They have very tasty bar food and on top of all this they also serve free bread and cheeses. It's one of the must go places in Christchurch
K.
Best chips and gravy in town! Went for lunch but the kitchen had just closed. Keen to go back soon as the menu was amazing!! Mac n' cheese croquettes are on my "what to order next time" list!
J.
Pretty sweet place. Watch those hazy beers though, they can sting ya wallet good. Great place though. Old English pub feel nut with nice outside area and nice location right by the river 💃
D.
A good warm spot. Interesting beers on tap and good pub grub. There is a good mix of local people and international travelers. Live music. Beware, you stand on the stage as you come in, don't sprinkle the musicians with your damp umbrella.
E.
Nice place to relax
&
have a great 🍺
R.
Ok the ricotta pancakes are a must on the menu! They take a little longer but they are worth the wait. If you are into savory the Cajun chicken zucchini dish is insanely good! The staff are so professional it is beautiful to see.
L.
We arrived starving after the chef was done for the evening but they very graciously let us order from the full menu. The room was warm and cozy, the staff lovely and the food was absolutely delicious. I had a vegetarian meal with haloumi, dahl and roasted cauliflower, soo good! I even got a wine upgrade as there was a single glass of the more expensive chardonnay left. Highly recommend.
J.
Great establishment with a large beer selection and very good food. Nice outdoor space as well as ample room inside. It has the feeling of an old neighborhood pub, which is a nice change from the more modern establishments in the city center.
M.
Craft beer, good food, great live music and a good selection of spirits and wines. Accommodation next door owned by the pub as a boutique accommodation place.
Little Poms is also situated next to it as a cafe. Friendly atmosphere and great service.
S.
Staff was so friendly. Food great (above our expectations). One vegan main but it was very tasty! Beer tasting was really nice.
D.
This pub is great and very popular. Get here early as the seat fill up quick. one of the best English pubs out side England. Food was great and the range of beer is fantastic. It was so good ..went back the next day.
A.
Great English style tavern with a really good range of high quality indpendant beer. Amazing food and the service is always top notch
L.
Amazing food and fantastic service. Very cool vibe, would definitely visit again
A.
There is live music at 19:00 on Thursdays. The place was full and lively at 21:00.
The atmosphere is great, good choice of beers, home platter was delicious.
It's somewhat expensive for a local bar - pint of beer is 8.5$
M.
So many craft beers to choose from!! Great atmosphere, food available and very popular. You may need to do multiple visits if you love craft beer! I do, but time was too short. Next trip!!
G.
Great place to have a quiet ale. Choice of ales are wonderful. Service great. Well recommemded
M.
My all-time favourite pub/bar/restaurant in Christchurch. The best range of craft beers I've ever seen paired with some of the most delicious meals around. If you're British and miss the cosy UK pub restaurants, this is the place to visit.
A.
Fantastic beer selection and friendly knowledgeable staff. Lovely lady also helped us with suggestions for beer places in Auckland which we were visiting the next day.
Both visits staff went above and beyond. Highly recommend a visit
Z.
Such a fantastic place to unwind and taste some incredible drinks! Food was absolutely delicious, pricing was fair and the service was wonderful! The lighting is good and the atmosphere as a whole was impeccable. I highly recommend this place for a quality night out
C.
Delicious Sunday Roast. That with a pint is just what the doctor ordered. Also im calling myself the doctor. Lol. Food and service on point!
S.
Great selection of beers and good vibe. Came here with a bunch of mates and sat in the outside area, which is really good. Haven't sat inside once, but seems nice! Staff are friendly too.
d.
I was looking for somewhere in ChCh to take 2 Family members , specifically for a Sunday Roast Pork Lunch . Booked a table and am so pleased I did . The staff were engaging , friendly and efficient . The meal was nicely presented , well cooked with great flavours . We were seated at a lovely table in a warm inviting space . At $20 for such a delicious meal I will definitely be heading back again .
F.
Visited this on a weeknight, so I'm not sure how crowded it gets on weekends. The staffs are friendly, the atmosphere is great.Good selection of drinks, and good food (we like the fish and chips). It seems family and pet friendly as well.
S.
Great bubbly atmosphere. Busy on Fridays after work but still manage to find seats. Good selection beers and wines. Great food too but book in if you want a meal.
A.
Great place, good bar snacks and great drinks
D.
Great atmosphere and very large range of beers. Highly recommend.
S.
One of the best pubs in the city for sure! Excellent craft beer, drinks, food & atmosphere. One of my top spots
H.
Good food, good drinks, good staff and great patrons! Whoosh
D.
First time here. Loved the ambience and the staff were amazing. The squid salad was to die for and the daisy cutter IPA was an excellent drop. Will definitely return.
M.
A well-run operation with a truly "local pub" atmosphere.
None of the usual screens and loud inappropriate music - just a good pub, with good staff providing a relaxing venue full of an eclectic bunch of happy customers.
L.
Love poms. Great beer. Great food. Just wish they would make the signs to the toilets more clear so guests wouldn't have the same embarrassing experience I did!
L.
Excellent selection of well kept beer on keg and cask. Very friendly staff, pool table, fussball table, food served (don't know how it was as only had a couple of beers) and covered outside seating area for nice weather or smokers.
L.
Lamb was well cooked with a great mix of sauces on the plate. Staff was awesome and friendly. BUT the dessert was a huge let down. Ordered the chocolate brownie that they had cut into small cubes - same size as the blueberries. I had four pieces of the brownie and had more blueberries. If you just drizzled the sorbet and not let it take over the little brownie I did have it could of made a difference.
P.
Lovely brewery..perfect for a few pints and some gravy chips..would definitely revisit and eat a few more dishes. 🥰
A.
Food ws amazing, outsode area ws really gd with a relaxed vibe, staff were very friendly. Deff go again 👍
n.
Very nice ambience especially for a Sunday roast very much like an English pub. Food was good it would have been great to have a vegetarian option for the roast dinner rather than just vegetable s. However it was tasty and enjoyed. Sticky toffee pudding was enjoyed very much by kids
A.
Great English style tavern with a really good range of high quality indpendant beer. Amazing food and the service is always top notch
N.
We had our staff Christmas meal at Pomeroys on Saturday evening. 13 of us and we all couldn’t get over how amazing the food was. The menu was way beyond expectation, the staff were awesome and so attentive. Highly recommend, thanks so much team!
W.
Called in for a drink after work, good atmosphere
K.
What a pub! Great Beer, Staff and Patrons!!!
J.
best pub in town. Great craft beer. Top class food. And entertaining bar staff!
b.
A great pub. Lots of local flavour. So many beers!
B.
Brilliant meal. Staff fantastic, and brilliant range of beer.
W.
Lovely food. Great service. It was challenging to talk with the loudness of the band. Difficult to have the right balance for all patrons understandably. Our booking at 7 quite early to have a band??
M.
I love this place. Great coffee amazing food that is good for the soul and body. Amazing menu and delicious healthy treats. Raw snickers tart is amazing and completely guilt free!
S.
Quiet, comfortable. Excellent waiter (red hair and beard), forget the crackling dish, otherwise delicious food, soup and accompaniments. Will go back. :-)
R.
Great range of beers, friendly bar staff and good food . Homely feel. Everything you’d expect in a country style pub. Enjoyed the experience.
S.
Disappointing to say the least. By 7pm two of the dishes on the main menu were not available. Two of the whiskey choices on the web sight had been deleted but not upgraded on the web sight, seriously annoying to this writer. The starter was fine although a little salty in taste. The mains had been sitting under the heat lamps, that was fairly obvious.
Both our mains were ok but far to much salt used.
We choose not to have a desert.
$140.00 which included drinks.
Will we go back again? NO
E.
Awesome staff, great atmosphere and good food
J.
best pub in town. Great craft beer. Top class food. And entertaining bar staff!
S.
Great pub with an old English feel. Exceptional selection of beers, with a great selection brewed by the bar. The food is top notch also. Love this place.
D.
A fine English style pub with a separate dinning area. 32 craft beers on the night we were in, brews changing daily. The food that we chose ( fish ) was excellent.
M.
Always good. Great selection of beverages and the food ain't bad either. Pork crackling to die for
C.
Bloody good pub. My one downside is that their chips don't come with enough sauce so you run out before your chips are done also a seafood basket is always a great menu item. Sort that out and it would be 10/10
K.
Customer service was top notch and the beef burger was hands down the best burger I have ever eaten! Will be back each and every time I'm in Christchurch.
B.
Just a fantastic pub for the craft beer drinker, a realy great pub. We stayed in the pubs accommodation next door again absolutly top notch. We also had evening meals & breakfast there, the food was first class.
S.
A few GF and DF options, but limited. Staff were very helpful with swapping things out.
Thoroughly enjoyed my steak.
D.
I was taken here by some local colleagues for a few drinks after work. A very large selection of beers. I don't drink beer but the Cider on tap was good. Quite noisy at times. The guy handing out the bread and cheese was a nice touch.
j.
We don't drink.Lol. Seems strange to be having a meal where there are so many craft beers on tap. However, it's so warm and cosy, the food was delicious and Jared, the waiter, is worth his weight in gold.
I.
Probably the best craft beer selection on tap in Chch. And it keeps changing too so even if you've tried everything on the board, you can come back a mont later and there will be new stuff on!
A.
Great atmosphere Great food and choice of beers
H.
Great atmosphere, good food, huge range of beers!
M.
Amazing food everytime. Continues to be a favorite place to dine when in town. Great staff. A warm and welcoming place
S.
Best pub in Christchurch! Always have a great selection of craft beers, which they shuffle around regularly, so you always get to try something new.
B.
Pomeroy's is a great place to eat. We go regularly and recommend it highly to our guest's. Recent changes may need watching closely as change for the sake of change does not always result in improvement.
S.
Good atmosphere with a great selection of beer. The menu selection, presentation and overall satisfaction on a par with the best.
K.
Best place in town for a proper pint and outstanding food!
A.
One of the best bars in Christchurch, old English style, with a wide variety of really good beers
C.
Fantastic place for a craft beer and a catch up. Only one pool table, as there isn't enough room for more. The food is also amazing! Great place! 😀
M.
Enjoyed it immensely. Good atmosphere of a friendly local pub. Very nice beer with lots of choices of locally brewed stuff.
P.
Awesome range of craft beers, really nice "olde worlde" cosy atmosphere. Historic building as well, on the old Ward Brewery site.
C.
Best pub in Christchurch! The food is consistently outstanding with a seasonal menu and the beer menu is always awesome. Great service from friendly staff.
N.

M.
Great pub. Great selection of craft beer brewed on site and others from around the region and country. Decent food. Good atmosphere
A.
Great atmosphere, nice selection of local microbrews, good food, and friendly staff. What's not to like at this neighborhood pub? Well... The prices are a little stiff, but other than that, I love it!
V.
Excellent food. Particularly good mulled wine. Over all its a great venue.
J.
Food delicious. Waiters great. Kid friendly. Beer selection awesome. Just a little bit noisy but it was a Friday night.
J.
Great beers, atmosphere and food. If anything, roasts could be helped by focusing a little more on quantity than quality!
d.
Not very welcoming, just ok, quite dark, sat outside,a bit sheltered but a cold breeze, toss up between sitting in side or out , not to keen on going again, beer was average,
R.
Always great beer and food. Fantastic staff
N.
Seems to have filled the niche of "sweet pub with great beer and a welcomes all comers atmosphere" left by the prequake dux- seriously mixed clientele all getting along famously. Guaranteed to meet some interesting people, but unless you drop in right after opening, not really somewhere to head to if you're looking for a quiet beer. Heads up, it's new offshoot next door, Little Pom's, is an altogether different proposition, the only thing they seem to share is the crowdedness.
J.
Great craft beer and good food. It was quiet when we went for lunch.
D.
Amazing beer selection, and easily some of the best food we had in Christchurch.
U.
My favourite pub & most like an english pub that I can find in Christchurch. Comfortable, warm with friendly staff who remember my name. Good parking (a little bumpy outside in the car park ).
A.
Food ws amazing, outsode area ws really gd with a relaxed vibe, staff were very friendly. Deff go again 👍
R.
The food was delicious (got the fish, and the pulled pork), buzzing atmosphere with the band, and amazing service, can't wait to go again
h.
Great beer, service was less than ideal as staff appeared to be looking at everything else rather than in the eyes of their customers. Chips & gravy were spot on.
N.
Great food, service and fantastic selection of beers
D.
Always good. Delicious beer and food. Great service.
L.
Great selection of beer. Traditional pub with good bar food.

r.
Grab a pint from their ever changing selection on the backboard, and hell! Why not a bowl of their amazing fries too!? Summer or winter this place is always great.
L.
Great crunchy Cauliflower burger. Bar also seems to allow dogs in with owners. Very English!
C.
Good choice of beers, great ambience, friendly staff and patrons. Very enjoyable
S.
Love the staff, atmosphere, menu, huge beer menu. Always excellent
C.
A really great historic pub where cricket fans crowd the tables and sip craft beers. There's a great selection of beers to choose from as well as a full bar if you're in the mood. Four Avenues Brewing Co is located behind the brewery and three of their beers are always featured in house, but there are 15 other regulars on tap for you to try. There truly is a beer for everyone here. Take a peek at their menu as they have a wide variety of stand out barfood from spiced free-range chicken wings and chicken and pork terrine to jalapeno cheesedip and homemade pork crackling. There's also soup, squid and vegetarian nachos. Pomeroy's often has events going on, so check out their website to make sure you don't miss out on beer tasting fun! We visited during the Cricket World Cup and sat amongst crazy fans at their family seating tall top tables. There were also booth options and table options, but the space is limited. There is a small pool table near the wall where you can entertain yourself if you don't understand the rules to cricket.
Despite being one of the best drinking establishments in ChCh, they also pride themselves on their commitment to quality, healthy and fresh menus at their Victoria restaurant. I recommend making a booking for this restaurant at least 48 hours in advance. There is a full lunch and dinner menu with anything from steak and venison to beer-battered fish and herb+gruyere gnocchi.
Pomeroy's still is an Inn with a B&B next door. Visiting or just don't want to drive home? Be sure to make a booking in advance to stay in their adorable cottage. This is an iconic spot in ChCh for everything from atmosphere to craft beers and delicious meals. Stop in and check out Pomeroy's today!
M.
