d.Good place to stop on the cycle trail. Owners are new to the pub so we'll worth a visit. Wide range of gins on offer but not Ophir Gin! Place has a quirky feel. Go on step inside
P.We had a lovely time at Blacks, it was the first weekend for the new owners, and they did great! Friendly check-in and bar service, the room was a fine size for one night, and clean too 😊
Lovely garden area outside, and a quirky bar. Dinner was perfect, we went for the lamb and the steak (the steak was the best I’ve had in a very long time) 😊
Blacks would be a great place for a group of friends doing the bike trail, and we’ll certainly be back!

M.Loved it. Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff and a really good menu to choose from. There is a lovely garden area to sit in with a shade sale and plenty of umbrellas and it's dog friendly. My dog enjoyed being social and doing the rounds of the tables while we ate generous portions of fresh blue cod and salt and pepper squid. Yum!
A.Absolutely awesome place. Turned up and made to feel like a local right away. Top tap beers, a range of spirits and cocktails that will send your taste buds on a journey to flavour town. Alex knows his stuff when it comes to making a naughty brew. Dinner was presented well and was on par with the tasty cocktails. We got a few loads of firewood in from the back and owner sent us on our way with a complementary dozen beers for our "wages". Sounthern hospitality at its best. Absolute weapons. Cheers

S.We had the most enjoyable experience here. The food is highly recommended. The veggie burger is amazing. The hotel is quirky with plenty of things to feast your eyes on. The owner and his family work together as a strong unit and their definite aim is to please. There is a gorgeous shop on site as well with something for everyone. Our visit was an experience and would definitely return.

P.A great art deco building with quirky, eclectic decor make this spot a fun visit off the main drag from Omakau on the Ophir loop. It's one of the many sites on the self-guided walking tour in the town.
The staff are helpful and friendly, and made us a lunch for the Rail Trail after a last minute request from us. There are some quiet and well-behaved dogs trolling around which is OK if you're an animal lover. The rooms are compact and certainly unique, and the continental breakfast is standard fare and plentiful. If you're after a taste of something a bit different this could be for you.
M.We had a wonderful time here! We arrived here as part of a package deal whilst doing the rail trail. The hotel is excellent, the staff are exceptional. The pub is warm and friendly and really is the heart of the community. The family who run this pub are awesome and no request was too much for them. The food was top notch, as was the accomodation, comfortable beds and a great shower. We really enjoyed our stay here and intend to come back sometime in the near future. I have no doubt that this place will be the highlight of our trip!!
C.Absolutely fantastic pub meal. A quirky place for lunch. Awesome gardens to explore. We were shown the accommodation and it looked sparkling clean and very comfortable and cosy. We bought some of the local sauce and can't wait to try it. It was great day out.

A.We stumbled across Blacks Hotel this weekend and we were pleasantly surprised!
We were touring the area and expected standard pub grub, a TAB and a musty smell. Instead we got awesome service, great cocktails, sweet vibe and the owners were a good chat.

R.Came in for lunch one afternoon. First impression was cute place, liked the eclectic atmosphere. Then when I sat down, I literally found 3 hairs just sitting on my table. One of them was very long and just laying there in plain sight. A bit off-putting, but I rolled with it. Service was a bit off. No utensils or napkins served with a messy burger, barman rushed my order and kept walking away when I tried to talk to him, even though I was one of only 2 tables in an otherwise empty place. The "black beauty" burger was tasty, but served on a bun that was too soft for all the piled-high contents — when you bite into it, it's so soggy and flat that everything comes flopping out the other side. A big mess, especially without any napkins or even a fork. It was a yummy burger, though. Would I return again? Eh, maybe if there's no place else to go in town.
T.Popped in for refreshments late one afternoon whilst travelling around the South Island by camper. Immediately liked the place. Homely touches, creative design, and a good selection of drinks. Delving deeper things just got better: the owners were charming and welcoming, providing a touch of class not often found in rural NZ. The accomodation looked fantastic too and could well be back to stay!
J.Great food and awesome wee hotel. Make sure you try the haggis as it is so worth it. The hotel sells sauces And relish by the Naked Scotsman. The whiskey marmalade is amazing.
And don't forget to take a trip to the loo as the decor is fun.
c.My husband and I held our small wedding here this month and we cannot speak more highly of this incredible team! From our initial conversations right through till after the day Sam, Sandy, Alex and Jaz have absolutely exceeded all expectations. They helped to create an intimate and relaxed atmosphere where nothing was a problem and everything was catered to how we would like it. The food Sandy cooked was so delicious, the drinks plentiful and Alex was a wiz with the cocktails, Sam made the place look perfect and was so accommodating with seating etc. to ensure we could make the most of the weather (and the shade!), Jaz made planning the day a breeze and even busted out a delicious chocolate wedding cake for us! We had family and friends staying for multiple days and they couldnt stop raving about the welcoming hospitality the entire time. Cant recommend enough. Plus we pop down there for meals and drinks and always receive the same friendly service and delicious food to back it up. Just 100/100. We love you guys!

J.Great place to stay and would definitely stay again. We were in a large group staying for a wedding, and loved that all the rooms had a different theme ! Lovely staff as well, and nice wee garden spot to either sit and eat or have a drink !
N.The pork belly was good and our kids meal was eaten quickly, but the wait staff were pretty stern and unfriendly and this place didn't feel very welcoming or warm. It was quite a departure from everywhere else we had been on the rail trail. This place has potential though.

C.Blacks Hotel is an oasis in a gorgeous town. Our group of nine spent the last few hours of 2017 there and had a fantastic time! The owners Sam, Sandy, Jocelyn and Miles were incredibly hospitable and a went out of their way to make our new years eve a good one - Miles even took us on a tour of the village on our way to the pub in the courtesy van! Thank-you very much Blacks Hotel for a great night!

The barman/bouncer is friendly and quick to the pour and is at the ready with a story of the town.
This is a proper genuine pub and should be a stop for a Central Otago - actually, ANY NZ trip.

R.Just a country pub with over priced accomodation. Rooms are tiny - ok to hang your head after a day on the trail, but charge too much. The bacon and eggs are overpriced too. Good selection of whiskies though.

Fantastischer Ort. Der Besitzer ist super freundlich. Wir wollten eigentlich nur einen Kaffee und er hat uns gleich sein Hotel gezeigt inkl. Pace-Man Spiel in einem alten Weinfass!
