The BEST beer battered blue cod meal with an amazing salad. Yum. Worth. Love this Hotel on the Otago Peninsula

Stopped for lunch on a sunny Friday and was delighted with the entire experience. My daughter has alergy challenges and the staff could not have been more informed or helpful. And the meals, including the kid's meal, were beautifully cooked and delicious. Great siting in the garden bar overlooking the sea. Highly recommend for a great, reasonably priced lunch.

Got the Ritchies bus from town to Portobello (using gold card). Arrived 12 .20pm had beautiful lunch (omellete and very nice steak burger). Two wines. Then bussed back leaving about 2pm. Thoroughly recommend especially for golden oldies looking for a nice trip down the harbour and a great lunch.

A really warm and inviting atmosphere, the girls behind the bar are super friendly and happy to help. Had the lamb burger with chips, it was so so so so damn good, one of the highlights of my holiday.

Delicious lamb burger with perfectly cooked fries (you know the type - very crunchy but soft on the inside) was even better than the excellent service and comfortable ambience had already prepared me for. My wife enjoyed her soup and my grandmother's beer-battered fish was (reportedly) delicious - it certainly looked great too. The portions are generous, the local beer selection excellent, and the combination is well worth the drive from Dunedin. Fantastic, and highly recommended!

We ordered a lamb burger and the fish and chips. Sadly the patty in the lamb burger was overdone on the outside and mushy inside which let it down a little. My partner said her fish and chips were first rate though. The service was glacial however. I think it took around 40 mins to be served. It would have been nice to have turned some heating on as well. As visitors we are clearly not as hardy as the locals in winter and I needed to duck out to the car to get our jackets. There was a very large heat pump but it wasn't on and it was 8 degrees outside! The ladies were very pleasant however and drinks were great.

Nothing fancy here - just a traditional, friendly, Kiwi pub and restaurant. Good spot to drop in for a beer and get to know the locals. The restaurant food is better than you'd likely expect and it's very family friendly.

This is a must visit hostillery. Dozens of different rums! Excellent clean facilities and really great service and staff. But the most impressive of all was the food! We had a few family members come together for an impromptu reunion and the kitchen staff handled it extremely well. Beautifully cooked and all of us served as a group. I recommend the blue cod and bacon. Just beautiful. Well done Tony and the team. I'll be back

Bought fish n chips here for lunch when the fish n chip shop across the road was closed. tasty and good value for money. also had the blue cod wrapped in bacon for dinner and my husband had the beef short ribs. both very tasty and filling. seafood chowder not bad too. friendly staff and place was busy especially as they were showing the Blues vs Crusaders match that night!

We came here for dinner and had the steak and pork ribs. Both meals were hugely generous portions - so much so that I still had enough of my ribs left for a full lunch the next day. Great value! Very friendly and attentive service, and a lovely view of the ocean to top it all off. We look forward to returning next time we're in Dunedin.

Was recommended to drop by for some seafood by the owner(jerry?) of a cafe slightly above royal albatross centre as they didn’t have warm food for us in their cafe. We had seafood chowder and fish and chips. One of my best meals in NZ. Fish batter was so tasty and the chowder was rich in flavor!!

We had a staff dinner at Portobello Hotel last night - we only had an hour in between an Albatross tour and a Blue Penguin tour. The staff were fantastic, great service from Sarah and the chefs who delivered beautifully cooked and presented fresh blue cod and salad very quickly. Great selection of beers and a good wine selection we all loved it and will be back for a leisurely meal soon.

First I must say don’t be put off from the outside ! Inside was a warm welcome from the staff busy bar and eating area. First time I had rack of lamb which was the best and huge portion. Four of us were so impressed with the quality of the food we returned the next night when I had the halloumi salad which was absolutely delicious. The staff member ( Leslie ) on the second night was fantastic engaging with us as tourists. Great value and top class food.

Don't expect too much, it is a village tavern but it is a good one. Fish'n Chips and seafood chowder are good values. Place is nice, tap beer choice is decent, there are toys available. It is a good place to have a break in a middle of a trip to the peninsula.

We went into this cafe because, frankly, everything else was closed or too busy. We were happy we did. Service was efficient - despite a bus load of tourists arriving just before we did - and the food was quite good. A pleasant surprise.

It was an excellent experience. We caught the Porttoport ferry at 12.55pm from Port Chalmers and had a delicious lunch and went back at 3.15 from Portobello. A great day.

Little beaut country seaside pub, without any sense of pretense or trying to be anything it's not. Serves a really decent selection of cold beers on tap, and bloody very reasonably priced meals. Personally, I visit the place pretty much every time I go down the Peninsula - you'd be well advised to do the same if you're down that way! From memory, it's one of several 'Pubs that are old, and are happy to remain that way' sort of establishments that now dot NZs landscape. Which, to me, only adds to its charm. It is maintaining its history, and seems to be in absolutely no hurry to reach out into the 21st Century and become just-another-gastro-pub-experience (and more power to the owners, for that!) The pub offers punters a brilliant view across into the Otago Harbour, which is spectacular at high tide, but can get just a shade on-the-bugle (i.e. smelly) at low tide. But, this is simply the way it is - tide goes out, smell of all those sub-tidal things (seaweed, etc) gets a little more edgy until the tide comes back in. No real drama - but be aware of it, in case your sense of smell is a little more refined than mine is.
