J.Amazing food last night. Me and my partner went for dinner. Great service and lovely people that worked there! Good selection of craft beer too. The fried cauliflower was incredible, tasted just like fried chicken!
E.The gatherer and the staff that work there are exceptional, I was lucky enough to visit near the opening and many times since. I’m currently living in San Francisco and have to say the food easily matches if not exceeds many trendy American restaurants I have visited in my travels.
The interior and atmosphere is beautifully thought out, the staff are friendly and accommodating.
The gatherer has become a word of mouth hit over the years surprising and converting many friends I have who aren’t always into plant based/whole foods.

A.Went to Gatherer for dinner this evening. Now I am not a foodie at all, so I never leave restaurant reviews, but I enjoyed every second of the process of eating the amazing food these ladies served us so much I felt I had to share. The atmosphere is fantastic, the service perfect and the food is out of this world. I highly recommend Gatherer!

C.This place is one of the hidden culinary gems of NZ. It’s hard to believe you’re in little old Hoki when you see the beautiful presentation and taste the food these ladies produce in their tiny kitchen. Just had our second meal in 2 months, and it was sensational food, drinks and service on both visits. As a new mum with a baby in tow, the staff were great about having a wee one with us, and I felt really comfortable breastfeeding (something which not all establishments do well!!). V.A must visit if you’re in Hokitika, and here’s why:
I’ve got this cozy place recommended by a couple of vegan friends, which said nothing but great things about it. Here’s how my experience went.
Obviously being in RED traffic light cause of COVID, there were some safety measures put in place and the lovely staff explained everything about how the service will work and what procedures should be followed. 5/5 on communication! Well done.
Now, my girlfriend and I are big coffee drinkers and the coffee didn’t disappoint. Not only was it delicious, but came in really cool looking cups (again, 5/5).
Food was the main thing here, even though I am a meat eater (occasionally), I managed to find a few options that caught my eye, while my girlfriend being a vegetarian had no problem finding what to get. She ended up ordering a avocado toast, which was presented beautifully and was delicious. (Just a tiny bit salty for my tastebuds).
When it came to my order, I went with the cauliflower and brie cheese burger. It didn’t take that long for it to arrive and I was really excited for it. Presentation was awesome if it wasn’t for one tiny thing.
I’ve noticed some tiny tiny green fellows (don’t think it was Aphids) moving around on the salad, which didn’t really bother me at first, but then I though that this probably shouldn’t happen. So I politely asked if there’s anything that could be done about this and the lady was so friendly and nice, she brought it back ti the kitchen and later came back to say that they use organic salads/lettuce (which isn’t treated any chemicals) that’s why stuff like that can happen.
Long-story-short, not only did the chef made a new burger, the lady who served us said that this one is on the house and she’s sorry this happened. For me, this shows that these people really care about their customers and their business in general. Going an extra mile for a customer nowadays is quite rare and that’s why I highly recommend this beautiful and cozy place for everyone! The interior itself is pretty and warm, but the people there is what made the experience a million times better!

S.Popped in here on my wilderness trail, not knowing what to expect. I was blown away. The food and drink is some of the best I’ve had, plant-based or otherwise, and that’s having lived and having had quality plant-based food in Sydney, Vancouver, and Austin, where I now live.
Would come back to the west coast just to have the Baja Tacos and dirty tonic Gins again. Loved it.

B.The food at Gatherer is divine. It is so exciting to find gf, rsf & plant based/vegan options that have bangin' flavour & texture and arrive to your table beautifully plated. When you go, potentially the menu will be really different from when we went, because the creative genius' that exist there are constantly playing & creating but I suggest trying the colifor and the masa if you get the chance. The drinks list is extensive and filled with delightful natural wines, craft beers, cocktails & non-alcoholic options. The staff are very welcoming and knowledgeable. I love the rustic ambience with layers of green. All round amazing dining experience.

D.Best food in Hokitika, amazing flavours, great sound track, fantastic service. Came for dinner on Friday, was so good we came back on Saturday night for more of the menu. We will be back for sure, and is worth the trip from Chch just for dinner.
Gatherer also do the best coffee in Hokitika, and possibly the best coffee on the coast. Not one to be missed.
P.Stellar meal - one of the best I have had in a long time - Gatherer would stand on it’s own in NYC, London or Paris but is right at home in Hokitika! Great selection of dishes, the variety of tastes and textures is stunning. Great wine and beer selection - everything on the menu has a story.
The service was friendly and forthcoming and a great complement to the meal.
If there’s one meal you want to have on the Coast (or even NZ) make it here.

C.Absolutely amazing! Hands down the best Mexican food I’ve ever had, every plate we had was delicious. Being coeliac it’s incredibly hard to find places that have more than 1 or 2 options on the menu that cater to this (in most nz cities let alone remote towns!), so discovering Gatherer I was blown away. Already planning another trip so we can come back again! Thank you :)
W.This place is incredible and the food is absolutely amazing. It's Mexican food that is made from plant based ingredients that is made with great care and creativity. They also make great coffee and appear to the have some delicious cocktails too.
My partner said she wanted to visit a spot in Hokitika on our south island road trip because they have a cool Instagram page and I went in expecting poached eggs on sourdough toast. I was surprised and excited to see the menu as I love Mexican food and have been craving tacos with authentic tortillas (most places in nz are unfortunately glorified Old El Paso). The menu has a really good selection of food without being too overwhelming. There's something for everyone and even my 'meat and two vege' old man would enjoy the kai on offer.
We shared 3 dishes between two and it was a good amount for us. We had the coliflor, mushroom ceviche and the Kumura tacos. Each dish was world class and wouldn't look out of place in any top restaurant around the world.
I can't speak highly enough about Gatherer and will definitely be back next time we're in Hokitika.

K.Some of the best food and service I have ever had, they were very accomodating to my dietary needs and completely reworked some of the meals so I could eat them. The food itself was very tasty and really filling, you definitely got your money’s worth coming here. If you are in Hokitika and looking for a good meal this is the place

R.This place serves the most incredible, authentic Mexican vegetarian/vegan food! What a find! This is honestly one of the best restaurants in NZ and undoubtedly the best Mexican in NZ, it’s in remote Hokitika. I wish they would expand to Auckland.
S.Amazing food. Amazing staff. Amazing atmosphere. If you're looking for hidden food gems this is it. We picked a selection of the share plates which I highly recommend. We polished off four plates between three of us and were left feeling pleasantly full (none of that post-meal sluggishness or regret here). They also promote sustainability which is a huge plus!

T.Hands down the best place to eat in Hokitikia. We went for dinner and we were so lucky we booked. Everything was delicious and the flavors were amazing! The tacos are sooo good. Definitely get the banana lotus tacos. Gutted that I couldn't come back in the morning to try their coffee but when we are in the area we will come back again :)
T.This place is wonderful! Partner and I drove through town looking for a place to eat and happened to come across this cafe - such a fortunate find! The decor was lovely and food was fantastic. He had tacos and I had the quesadilla huevos rancheros - both were beautifully presented with fresh ingredients and tasted divine. Did I mention partner is a carnivore? He almost walked away when he saw the menu but I forced him to stay despite his skepticism and when he took his first bite his eyes opened wide and he said, "Wow, this is really good!" Wholeheartedly recommend to all!

A.Absolutely stunning food!! This has been one of the highlights of our trip to the south island without a doubt. It is a must even if you are not vegetarian/vegan.
S.Popped in for lunch on a Friday. Best gluten free food in the country. Every table was occupied, people waiting for tables, such is the high standard of food presented at this restaurant. Also encouraged to see 6 staff busy waiting on and cooking for the lucky patrons so great for the local economy. This is the best of the best.

L.Amazing place!! The coffee was one of the best I've had (with sunflower milk) and the vegan cakes are delicious. Very friendly place with a beautiful back garden, lovely when the sun is out. Unfortunately it was their last day for the season but definitely recommend for next summer!

K.This place is what dreams are made of. I would've been impressed with this place even if it were in a foodie city, but the fact that this gem exists in the middle of &*#!ing nowhere is mind-blowing.
My husband and I spent nearly two hours here but would've happily spent another two. The atmosphere is lovely -- tons of indoor plants, cute decor, and a beautiful outdoor space. The owner and the other woman working were incredibly warm and friendly. We started with coffees (a long black for my husband and a cappuccino for me -- both A+) and spent some time just relaxing and reading a few of the many interesting cookbooks laying around.
Next we moved onto food. We got two slices of pizza -- the forager and one with chorizo -- , a kimchi/veggie sandwich, and a lemon blueberry muffin to share. Everything was incredible!!! I was especially impressed by the forager pizza (which is GF and DF). I'm usually skeptical of dairy substitutes in general but the cashew cheese was insanely creamy and delicious. (Not to mention the presentation of everything was beautiful.) The muffin was also amazing. I saved it for the top of a challenging hike and it was the best reward ever :)
Once we realized they are closed on Mondays (and that we couldn't come back the next day), my husband decided he had to try one more thing and got the Detox latte which he thought was really unique and flavorful. I'm just sad we can't come again before leaving NZ. Such a treat!
Tl;dr: out of this world, ABSOLUTELY worth a stop in Hari Hari!!

C.We are staying in Hokitika for a few days as we make our way down the West Coast. Stopped in for brekkie this morning and had a scone, salad and pizza slice with a smoothie and a coffee. The food was exquisite, so delicious and full of goodness. My boyfriend bought another scone to take away! Truly tasty food and gorgeous atmosphere, highly recommend.

R.What a delight it was to stumble on Gatherer on arriving in Hokitika. Small town NZ food can be hit or miss, but our meals here were amazing! The food was on par with (if not better) than similar vegetarian cafes in the larger cities. We arrived from Arthur's Pass starving and left full and happy. Varied menu, beautiful atmosphere, friendly staff, and good coffee. You really can tell when cafe owners take pride in the food they serve - why can't all NZ cafes be like this! Well done.

J.Best vegan Mexican type foods around, including tacos, quesidires{?} etc, and great coffee (Hummingbird). Their beer is craft beer from Garage project in Wellington. A very tasty and interesting brew. Their Matakana kombutcha is also outstanding. Prices are reasonable and service is obliging and friendly. The food quality is consistently high and premises has a folksy type ambience. You can dine there with confidence of receiving tge best tasty vegan meal.
