Reviews of The Crooked Elm
K.
Amazing steak the mushroom sauce was amazing! Service was really good! And the sticky date pudding also really yummy! I'll be back.
T.
Lovely spot on a sunny evening - excellent, friendly table service, great outside space; and the unexpected bonus of an a capella women's chorus doing Christmas songs for part of the time- nice without being deafening 😊 All together a great place for after work team drinks. Apologies for the wonky photo 😆
T.
Good vibe/ service & yum pie with mash in background steak with salad on a saturday 16 oct 2021

🌳WELCOME TO THE CROOKED ELM🍂🍃
A true local pub for the discerning with a decidedly English feel. Their policy here at the Elm is to encourage and foster the local community in the purest possible sense and that is by encouraging the art of conversation and sociability. To this end they have no TVs for sport etc and they have middle of the road background music for your listening pleasure.
🍻Beers🍺
They offer a great range of main stream and craft beers including Exclusive brews from Black dog in Wellington, Tuatara, Garage Project, Kereru, Bone Face and Baylands in Petone.
The Elm is one of only 2 bars in the Hutt serving draught Heineken (the other one is the Butcher & Brewer). They have an old English hand pull serving real ale in true English style and thay will be Pouring their own exclusive beer brewed at the Butcher & Brewer later in the year so watch this space.
🥂Wines🍷
Their wine list is short but perfectly formed and offering a range of European wines as a point of discovery and a some superb local organic wines as well. Thay will be offering selected and unique wines in the future.
At the Elm they like to think of ourselves as Gin specialists and, indeed, they have 11 varieties from around the world to choose from.
🧂Food🍽
Food is centred around good old English comfort food with a modern touch and features items like hand crafted pies on IPA mash with gravy and real mushy peas, an absolute winner.
There is also a selection of mains with the prices being great value for money and reflected in the casual, relaxed service found at The Elm.
There will be daily offers coming soon along with events yet to be organised as they grow as a focal point in the community.
🌿THE UNTOLD LEGEND🍂
The mysteries of the Elm tree are fabled throughout history and the Hutt city Elm is no exception.
During a waxing moon some 100 years ago, our fabled Elm played host to a wandering musician who had stopped to rest under its canopy. As he rested the traveller sang a soulful melody and awoke a deep magic within the tree. The elm was infused with a sense of enormous well being and kinship.
Since that day it is believed that to touch the trunk of the tree during a waxing moon would bestow on that person the same sense of wellbeing.
This spirit lives on through us, representing the heart and soul of the community, so enjoy the warmth and fun that is the CROOKED ELM.

Amazing english fish and chips. Complete with vinegar and mushy peas. In heaven. Goes great with a beer. Nice environment and seems like it would be a great place for all sorts including families. Look forward to coming back.
C.
Great location, average food and when we asked for additional butter to go with their delicious bread it wasn't an option (making the 1st course somewhat disappointing experience wise) The pork crackling was exactly that and the apple sauce spicy. The monkfish was good, the beef pie a hit, the salmon was a bit dry when combined with the mash, but the beef roast was well done which isn't great.
P.
A good cafe bar with a good range of food and drinks, alcoholic or otherwise. The decor is nice and homely with classic modern colour coordination. Staff are fantastic and service is fast and efficient.
A bit expensive for the Hutt yet an enjoyable place to hang out with friends and family.
S.
Lovely outside seating, great service. Eggs were slightly overcooked, but otherwise delicious. Generous pour of cider and friendly staff. Will visit again
A.
Had a pleasant business lunch here. It took a bit too long to bring out our meals, but other than that the service was great, and the food was good. The marked keto options on the menu was a handy feature.
K.
Went for weekday lunch and this place is relaxing, good atmosphere, the food is delicious plenty of day drinking options and the staff, well everytime i have been they are just awsum, super fun and friendly hands down best staff thankyou
K.
Breakfast food and drink look good and were just ok. I was very impress though that on this wintery wet day our k9 was able to sit with us so that alone will bring us back. Look forward to trying some dinner food and a pint.
E.
Wow what a lovely experience on a sunny afternoon. Lovely platter the cauliflower and squid were devine! We had a group of 8 and our waiter was awesome kept topping our drinks up and told us a few jokes very friendly. Lovely out on the deck for a sunny sunday
D.
Square sausage for brunch!
Popped in after visiting The Dowse for a snack and a coffee. Square sausage was killer and worth the five stars on it's own. Food and service were good.
The place is in a good spot on a pedestrianised Square with surrounding things to see and do. Easy to add on to a visit to galleries or gardens. Worthy of a visit on it's own too.
Intrigued by the claim of being a "British Pub". The food definately had shades of the UK about it. But it was done to a typically high NZ standard. It might be the closest thing I've seen to a pub from back home - but it is definately Kiwi.
I fancy coming back for a beer sometime.
D.
Lovely dinner enjoyed by our group. Thanks to Mark our waiter who looked after us so well. Great size portions well worth it
R.
Always good for a catch up with friends, yummy pub food, nice location!
B.
Was a great lunch out in the sun ... Dog friendly and staff wonderful. My salad was nice.
N.
Excellent food, great service and lovely atmosphere
B.
Excellent; fine food and friendly, efficient service.
T.
Yummy food. Well done again team. PFC burger was really tasty and enjoyed every bite.
R.
One of the few places you can buy an authentic English pint that isn’t chilled! We had lunch here today to celebrate a birthday. Food was excellent! Staff were great! We enjoyed the pies, fries, beer bread, veggie brunch and kids chicken and chips - all excellent! Curry sauce with fries was just like it should be. After being in lockdown my 8 year old was craving a lime milkshake from McDonald’s....I couldn’t be bothered with the queues so he jumped with excitement to see those in offer at the Crooked Elm! It didn’t disappoint either! Get in and support local businesses like this one everyone! If you are craving a bit of English fare - go here!
c.
Possibly the best English breakfast I've had for a very long time. Bacon butty was crazy good and so was the hotdogs. All up I was very happy with the choice of breakfast venue.
R.
This was the most amazing night I ever had. The staff was great, the food was amazing and the drinks was out of this world. Have to give a big shout out to Joshua who was our server for the night he was exceptional. Thank you for a unforgettable night.
K.
Great food, nice spot for lunch.
H.
Went with my partner for a drink and then possibly a meal. As soon as we sat down we were given menus, but we said that initially we only wanted a drink and would consider a meal later. The wait staff kept coming back to the table and asking for our order. In the end we placed a food order, as the wait staff kept hovering around watching us, but we told them to hold off on bringing the food out for at least 20 minutes. The food came exactly 20 minutes later. The food was very nice (battered fish and chips plus a snack bowl of deep-fried chicken pieces), so no complaints there. However, the prices were rather high for pub food, and the waiters were over-attentive. The drinks were also not cheap: $21 for a beer and a glass of wine. While the ambience of the pub was quite pleasant, the background music was rather loud and intrusive. So overall, we had rather mixed feelings: some good things and some not-so-good things.
S.
Good food, great friendly service
N.
Went in for the sweet as hot chocolate challenge. Went away filled with smooth caramel vodka and beautifully velvitised hot chocolate. Gonna go back for the food sometime
M.
The food was absolutely divine the staff were fantastic
B.
We took the nephew here for lunch and had the gourmet hot dogs. Yum! We all enjoyed our meals. Special mention to the parmesan fries!
M.
Debloodlicious, loved the cauli burger will visit again
T.
Amazing choices of food and drinks. Great band playing today, loved it
C.
Very enjoyable meal in pleasant family friendly surroundings. Only one "complaint" - why was the roast served in the enamel "campfire style " plates? Made it difficult to savour the entire experience as all the food was lumped on top of itself, please consider using standard dinner plates for roast meals. We will be back 😊
P.
Helpful polite staff. Very nice food
S.
I cannot fault the food here, the tastes are sublime and the menu choices are good value. A good selection of craft beers on tap to wet your whistle. This is now my favourite pub/eatery in the Hutt Valley.
M.
We popped in for a beer whilst we waited for the lights event to start. The beer was good and the staff friendly. The pub seems to be aiming itself as a British pub and it did have a guest ale which was great to try.
S.
Perfect place for a beer out the back on a sunny day. Proper chips and curry sauce. Set in nice open space. Nice decor.
J.
It's a pub fits in well with the redevelopment of the town hall area. Located in one corner of the square, where, the other side is occupied with the Dowse art gallery.
The Crooked elm has about 6(?) beers on tap with many others in the cooler. Sadly, I'd had my fill before coming and simply wanted an L&P. No got, instead I had a raspberry soda. The atmosphere inside was relatively quiet for a bar and was able to have a conversation with my workmates. The waitering staff was friendly and efficient. All-in-all a good experience.
Z.
It has solid food and a few beers. But not the biggest selection and the pies taste like they have been frozen. But the location is great and so is the patio. When there are activities going on at the art museum, this place is the perfect spot to for a drink.
W.
The Crooked Elm wants to be your local. And it does this well - the food is good quality, fair pricing and the menu is way more varied than most pub/cafes. No table service though, it was an "order at the bar" (maybe different on the weekend). Extensive opening hours including brunch.
From the outside it almost looks like "just another council building" so we got a real kick out of the interior ambiance which is visually interesting and plenty of natural light. Our visit on Thursday evening found Crooked Elm to be remarkably quiet and the staff were lively and welcoming. We will definitely be heading back there.
.. Apologies for the name typo when I first posted - very sloppy of me. We definitely recommend The Crooked Elm and enjoyed our visit.
G.
We weren't able to reserve a table for lunch and when we turned up there was a reserve sign on a table (not for us). We put three tables together as there were 7 of us and the chef/owner made a comment that we were using too many tables even though each table sits 2 people - it wasn't very busy. The mashed potatoes were luke warm and not that appealing. The hot chips and curry sauce were delicious. I would think l twice about returning as we also had some issues on the Friday before when we went for drinks and a meal.
L.
Staff superb, lunch was amazing 👏
R.
Absolutely delicious food and perfect little cafe! Recommend the beer bread spread!
A.
Really nice chilled environment. The meals came out promptly when it was fairly busy which was good. The meals were yummy. Will be back.
R.
It was okay, my friend want a beer but apparently she could only get a pint. She's a brit told me you can get half pints at an English pub. There was a loud noise coming from upstairs or could have been a base I found that unpleasant. The food was good and staff really friendly
A.
Nice outdoor area. Food is ok, stated as Kiwi/English but no fish n chips or burgers in sight. Good selection of beers though!
Edit: Fish and Chips is the fish of the day! Easy miss :)
C.
Nice inside. Clean and well designed. Once the meals and drinks where ordered at the bar the service was great and quick given it was 1/2 full on a Wednesday night. All and all a good pub meal at a reasonable price.
S.
Sad they won't let you substitute anything in any meals.
First time we ate there my fish pie was frozen in the middle.
My partner was dissappointed in the lack of British beers. He's British and it's touted as a British pub. Guess it's British 'inspired'. Anyway went for breakfast for a second try. It was ok. Not sure would return for dinner, but maybe another time for breakfast.
N.
Excellent service, staff were attentive but not overly so. The food was excellent and came extreamly quickly after ordering. Good central location and a friendly and inclusive atmosphere.
Definitely will be coming back with friends! Overall it was an extreamly pleasurable experience.
V.
Nice place to while away a couple of hours especially when the sun is shining and you can sit outside. Had the pie, peas and mash. My only criticism is the amount of mushy peas served, come on guys, you can give us more than a small spoonful on top of the pie. It was more of a garnish than a portion of peas.
W.
Had a really nice pie for dinner. Nice surroundings, great service and good food. Awesome milkshakes.
J.
Love the Crooked Elm. Great drinks selection and like all the small plates of food you can choose. Great to have a good eating out venue in Lower Hutt. Always very good service. The staff are always very helpful
R.
Great food, awesome staff 😀

B.
Nothing to get excited about. Average overall with poor beer selection. On a positive I would recommend it as a good place to take the grandparents, it reminded me of an upscale RSA.
A.
Have just had the most fantastic evening at The Crooked Elm. Great food, great staff, great service, great atmosphere and good music at a level that still allows you to have a conversation. We will be back.
L.
Great place to have drinks with friends on a sunny day.
Would be great to have some umbrellas
Hats are supplied though.
Good selection of pub food.
K.
Had the pork belly bites with hoisen sauce, thought the bites were not fresh as it was quite stringy and hard to chew, but a good size portion for the price
A.
Food was great, the apple pie was to die for! A relaxing atmosphere, modern decor. Would go again to try out the brunch menu
E.
Good food. Friendly staff. Fabulous atmosphere. Terrible acoustics.
D.
Seemed OK I had 1 beer sat outside, pretty relaxed and tidy. Just the place for a quiet beer to sit back and relax bar food seemed OK.

Nice venue and interesting pub menu. Food is actually disappointing however. Very bland
D.
Great place for a beer. Smoke free premise, even outdoors! There's no TV here so a great place to meet friends without the distraction
D.
Great venue. Good atmosphere and reasonably priced. Good place to just hang out and have a cold one.

A.

T.
Love food but not the noise lol
T.
Lovely premises, with a great vibe. But over priced food with inexperienced staff. Won't be back for food, but drinks maybe.
J.
Great pub food Paul & staff 2nd visit in 10 days. We will be backto try something else. The pies are great
S.
Really yummy, I had the bangers and mash and they were absolutely delicious! Staff were very friendly and attentive!
D.
Nice place to go for a drink and a bite to eat, just a pitty about that the owner clearly does not like children being in his bar he done his best to make us feel unwelcome in the end which was very disappointing.
N.
Great English style food and ales - highly recommend the Pie-thagorous with a pint of English IPA on the hand pull.
S.
One of the best pub in Wellington. Great environment, excellent food, range of beverage and friendly service.
