Reviews of Morere Hot Springs
C.
The most amazing Nikau forest I have seen anywhere in New Zealand. The moss on all the rocks in the river crossings were also absolutely idyllic more so that I have seen elsewhere. The river crossings were an absolute highlight however these were a bit tricky with paths across high cliffs with big drop offs to walk, so certainly not for everyone. As an experienced tramper I had not expected much out of this reserve, but don't let the concrete path for the first five minutes fool you, a very worthwhile experience with a hot dip at the end.
W.
Beautiful hot springs in the natural bush setting! $14 pp. Large hot indoor swimming pool and cold outdoor pool. A 10 min walk through the bush goes to the Nikau pools where there is 2 hot pools and a cold plunge pool. Changing facilities basic but hot showers available in main area near kiosk. Friendly staff. It was quiet and we had the pools all to ourselves. Worth going if passing!
P.
Went for a soak during the week in the private pools, was lovely and peaceful! Well needed place to relax and wind down after a full on weekend. Beautiful scenery and was able to stay in the private pools longer due to no one booked after us. Definately need to make this a monthly thing.
S.
This is based on the entry to the bottom pools only and not the private pools. The heated pool is nice but would be too small on a busy day. The changing rooms seem decades old. The toddlers pool is flaking paint which isn’t ideal. Overall it was an average experience. (If people rate this 5 star they clearly haven’t visited Hanmer Springs). The walks are really good though and recommend the Nikau track.
C.
Morere Hot Spring is a great place to relax for a couple of hours, when you’re driving from Napier to Gisborne.
It’s well located and inviting everyone for a driving break.
Nikau Pools are reachable after a short walk through the forest, besides the river, beautiful view.
There’re 3 pools with different temperatures.
Changing room, shower and toilet.
22.03.21 at the moment the showers for men and women are out of order, you can just use the ones at the main pool.
Highly recommended place!!!
R.
Great place for the whole family, bring a picnic or have a BBQ. The bush walks are really great. We went in the morning and we had the pools In the bush to ourselves.
Lovely friendly staff.
J.
So good for the bones! Friendly and helpful staff, super clean, lovely gardens. The outdoor pools were closed, possibly for renovation, wasn't clear.
B.
Beautiful & peaceful. We stopped for a quick rest & refresh. Didn't have enough time for the 5 minute walk to the busg pools but will be back. Staff were helpful & informative.
J.
Nice grounds and number of choices for enjoying the hot water springs. Opted for a private facility for a 30 min session.
H.
What a fab spot. We loved our walk up through the nikau grove and the top pools were lovely and warm on a cloudy day, and soo relaxing. We then ambled the short route back to the large pool, practicing native tree and shrub names on the way. The set up is simple, but clean. Super friendly staff at the entrance, too. Highly recommended.
D.
Worth a visit on a cool day if not too busy, got to the top pools. Just phone to make sure they are open first.
L.
This is one of the most memorable experiences I have had this xmas....48km from gisborne into some of New Zealand most glorious bush and mountains.
More hot springs offer peace, tranquility, rejuvenation, and relaxation...along with a wonderful Greenstone and Paua shop.
There are trekking hikes from 20minutes to 2.5 hours through some outstanding bush bringing you down and around to some of the most beautiful rivers and waterfalls I have ever seen...
After a trek Morere offers a swim and rejuvenating soak in the natural mineral pools...either private or public...these pools bring your body and soul back into alignment leaving you feeling like a new person with no cares in the world....then on the way out the greenstone and paua shop is a must to visit with some very beautiful pieces made by the lovely gentleman running the store ...all pieces blessed as they are made....and not to mention the lovely ladies at reception...friendly and full of information with a smile all the way. .thankyou so much....I highly recommend
T.
A serene spot in the woods. We were lucky to have a private swim on a Saturday morning, which is quite rare. Lovely hot pools in a simple set up. Fair prices. Not a 5 simply because no drinking water is available on site except for purchase in plastic bottles. We brought our own drink containers but there was no drinking water at the top or bottom.
R.
Were told before going that the waters were clean and do not smell - wrong!
Although the sulphur smell is not there, it smells like iron but is cleaner than most natural hot springs.
C.
A very sacred special place, crystal clear rivers, a must do activity in Gisborne 41 degree mineral natural spas
S.
Definitely try to do one of the walking tracks so you can really enjoy the hot springs after. You do need to take sturdy shoes if it's been wet and you have to cross the stream several times if you choose the mangakawa track. It's doable in 2 hours if you are moderately fit.
C.
Fantastic natural hot springs, we had a lovely little private hot tub on the forest with view of the stream below. Lovely warm waters super relaxing and well worth a visit to sooth a weary traveler.
K.
Relaxing pools . Warm with enough room. While other guests were there
A.
Loved the soak in the pools and throughly enjoyed the walk up to the Nikau Pools.
L.
Beautiful spot with some lovely walking tracks as well as lovely clean pools.
b.
Always a beautiful place to swing by for a swim ❤
W.
Very nature hiking places to go! Very quiet and nice spa ...
D.
Great place for something a bit different. Nice short easy walk to the niku pools
D.
Lovely DOC site and the hot spring water makes for a very relaxing soak. Brave people can go in the cold pool (not me!) as well. There are private areas too, but we enjoyed the public ones. You can walk barefoot between the lower and upper pools and there are places to sit and eat lunch. Excellent value for money and a good way to break a long journey
L.
An interesting experience. Great pools for all ages. Good facilities. Also lovely walks through native bush/trees.
P.
Great place and happy memories. Great setting for the pools and such beautiful native Bush. Great walks from easy to a bit more challenging. Great place for families to come picnic. Very helpful, cheerful staff.
E.
Unique, lovely pools with some great walks from the complex
R.
This place is great for days walk through native Forrest, tracks ranging from 30 minutes to 2hour .Then relaxing in hot pools or a cold one . 2 mintues walk to three smaller pools looking out on to the bush very relaxing as you sit in the pools.
Nice picnic area also .
D.
We loved ittttt ❤️
a.
Was an amazing experience drove from whanganui, definitely needed after a long drive, and the private rooms were 👌
G.
Well worth the journey, wherever you have come from. Great customer service, they kept the top pools open for an extra 15 mins as we arrived quite late after 4 days tramping. Beautiful, relaxing, can't fault the place. Thanks so much.
L.
First time experience for me. I was busting to go toilet and they kindly let me through. I didn't make to the other pools to walk up to.. but the one on the lower ground. Was a couple folks there at the time. Was lovely and warm. The outside pool reminded me of Waiouru in the winter lol. It felt icy cold as...I gave it a few goes...when I got too hot in the heated pool.. there was this young girl who almost did a length...so brave she was I thought. My husband thought it was a reasonable price too.
R.
It was raining so we thought we would go for a soak. The first pool we came to was the perfect temperature, so didn’t take the path to the hotter pools. Dipped toes into colder outdoor pool - I would have liked an outdoor pool at the same temp, as being indoor the glass walls and ceiling echoed. Be sure to take a water bottle in, they’ll even fill it at the gate for you.
B.
Nice and relaxing. Not too busy. Water was lovley.
A.
Beautiful surroundings friendly and helpful staff thought plunge pools could've been a bit cleaner but bottom pools and change area were great!! Definitely worth a visit!! Reasonably priced too!
B.
This place was awesome! We visited on New Year’s Day and there were only two others. Three pools with warm, hot, and cold. Place is set in the forest and very relaxing. The walk is all on asphalt so easy walking. There is a large area for picnics or bbq. Great stop when traveling as it’s also right off the main road.
R.
Excellent! Spotlessly clean. Nice setting in amongst the trees. Water fabulous temperature. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
We came in a car, but next time we'll stay. Access to the pools is inclusive of your accommodation rate.
V.
Great spot for a stop. Good parking.
S.
Beautiful as always. Even at Lvl2 restrictions, the staff were kind, accommodating and all round lovely. The private pools were delicious with breathtaking views and sounds! Always worth the trip
g.
Pools were great but showers were freezing. They said they must be out of gas. Not happy as you need to wash the smell off from the water.
R.
A wonderful place to stop and soak between Gisborne and Mahia. The staff are wonderful and the facilities are tidy. Walk to the back pools (~5 mins) for a relaxing atmosphere and a bit more privacy. And don’t forget to buy a popsicle on your way out—the coconut and passion fruit bars are delicious.
J.
Love this place. The staff are SO FRIENDLY. You'll leave feeling fantastic. There's a large hot/plunge pool and then smaller pools a 7 minute walk through beautiful forest. Did the 2 hour walking track which is gorgeous but wear your walking boots! It gets SLIPPY. Great little shop to buy local crafts and greenstone too.
t.
Didn't go to the main pool, just the smallest ones and it was awesome! Very nice and people comes and goes so doesn't get too crowded! The walking tracks around are very nice too!
H.
Beutifull hidden gem in the middle of nowhere, lovely staff and great facilities. There is a main pool complex which has a paddling pool, big unheated summer pool and a hot pool indoors. Secondly there is a short walk through a nice forest to a secondary pool complex, hot pools included. Overall good experience, with nice pools, staff and picnic tables.
H.
We used to frequent Morere every Sunday for a few years.
We were the first ones there and always the last to leave.
The colder the weather the more we loved it. Well kept with excellent service, fresh air and beautiful walkways to the top pools.
Many posts were seen on Fb especially at the change of each season we are blessed to have such a unique place to visit I shall never tire of visiting Morere meeting many travelers and very lovable locals miss you and your little whanau Wendy.
The new managers are very nice.
S.
Love the springs. Reminded me of the Japanese onsen. The two hiking trails are great. Remember it's easier to get on all fours when hiking the river rocks.
T.
BEAUTIFUL. Fantastic walks available and bathing facilities, perfect stop along the way especially for the people travelling a long way like we did. Leave feeling refreshed. $18 for an adult private, well worth the cost. Nice, hot and private. 10/10 would recommend. Lovely people running the place too.
K.
Morere is a place for everyone singles, couples, families and groups. With the pools there are beautiful bush walks and places to play games. We have always enjoyed the whanau or church bbqs. The private pools the top pools and the bottom pools has given us much enjoyment over the many years.
L.
Such a beautiful tranquil spot. The private pool has a view of the Native Bush. At 43 degrees, your stress just melts away.
The 10 min Bush walk to visit the other pools (tucked away in secluded Bush) is not to be missed; you'll see Kauri, Rimu and lots of palms. A beautiful spot for nature lovers!
The staff are lovely and very helpful.
R.
A hidden treasure the top pools were amazing, the cleanliness top notch, the staff friendly & obliging. Had to do a long return trip 1 week later to stay the night to do the short bush walk (well worth the effort as the track was so well laid out ) & spend extra time in the pools. A treat not to be missed.
J.
This place is just as it has always been. My friend and I both came here as children. It's really simple and I love that .the staff were friendly and the facilities are clean. Wanted to go in the private pools but just settled with the public. There's a little smoke House cafe over the road that we got a delishes ham roll at.
M.
Just down the road, walking distance from Morere Hot Springs Lodge hidden amongst beautiful trees and bush we went for a look but no soak, it was 30 degrees out but will defs have a soak next time we are down that way, when the weather is cooler.
J.
Such an amazing find.. loved every second. The walk to Nikau falls was beautiful and the pools themselves were so relaxing ❤️
k.
Great place to have a swim and relax. Great coffee.
J.
Nice spot for an afternoon with the kids, or hiking around the tracks. Some are up to 3hrs so be prepared.
S.
Lovely walk to the Nikau pools, we learnt a lot about the history of the land, how the pools are heated, the ferns and trees surrounding the area. Birds singing, very relaxing.
S.
Beautiful walk to get to the mineral pools
A.
Beautiful tranquil hot pools after a gorgeous brief Bush walk. Has got 2 moderate to very warm stainless steel pools and one very fresh plunge pool.
The water is very salty as it comes from historic seawater springs.
E.
Peaceful and idyllic spot, especially on a sunny afternoon. Not too many people and a stroll through picturesque bush to outdoor pools was a delight.
A.
I loved this place, simple and no fuss. We enjoyed the private pool, the hot mineral water felt very good on my sore ankle. The walk up through the Nikau & native bush was pleasant. The staff were friendly.
j.
We were more than pleased with our time spent at Morere Hot Springs. The service was outstanding. A nice clean and tidy place to relax, I have no problems recommending this place to anyone, and after being on the road for seven hours, it was just what was needed to wash away the stresses of driving. Thank you very much. We will be calling in again.
Joss and Mark.
N.
You get what you pay for. Facilities are reasonable. Private pools are limited and only allow 4 at a time so plan accordingly.
It's worth stopping for a soak if you are driving through.
K.
Some of the nicest hot springs I've been to in NZ. Gorgeous location. The pools are small, but we had the place mostly to ourselves. Book accomodation in advance, staying across the road makes the experience even more relaxing.
S.
So close to my home town. You dont have to be a holiday maker to enjoy our beautiful environment. Has something for everyone, nature track walks, private hot pools, indoor hot pools, cold pools, bbq area for the family and plenty of grounds for activity. You wont be disapointed.
J.
Nice hot pools, nice setting. There are walking routes in the park up to two or three hours long. There are hot showers in the main bathrooms, but the men's room has no semblance of privacy to other men or boys in the bathroom.
I.
Dated hot pools, quite different to the popular tourist ones in the hot spots. Different pools to choose from and some bush walks available. Great place to have a kids party as there's covered picnic areas available.
b.
Stayed here on our way to Gisbourne for 1 night, and came across this delightful area. Beautifully scenic.Lovely walks and glow worms at night.A dip in the hot pools. Wish we had of known about this before planning our trip, we would have stayed a bit longer. We managed to stay in the Morere Springs Lodge in the 2 bedroom cottage there (A restful rustic spot). They also have cabins etc attached to the cafe/store on the main highway as well. (Great coffee) We loved all of it.Go...you wont be disappointed.
D.
Had an amazing time at the hot springs, so relaxing & loved going from cold pool to hot pool to cold.... Will sleep very well tonight 😁
T.
The springs are worth a visit and beautifully located in a lush Nikau grove. The upper springs are more romantic, but limited space and privacy as the pools are small. My bathing suit got colored yellow... my advice is to use dark colored swim gear. The mid-aged lady on reception wasn't very friendly and told me that this never happens... I didn't believe it. I would have given 4 stars, but I didn't feel treated accordingly.
M.
Hot pools up the Trail a little small gets over crowded.. but still worth a visit... Good coffee ☕
B.
Great natural spa surrounded by beautiful native forest. Really relaxing - perfect way to start a day full of activities
D.
Morere Hot Springs rock & those girls in the kiosk are freckn awesome.
A.
Very relaxing and nice walks. Private pools r nice. But the whole place needs doing up. Very grumpy staff. Also you can only get private pools for half an hour which isn't long.
J.
Nikau pools NEED to be adult only, loved this place until going there in the school holidays, hope to love it again 🤞
P.
Absolutely fell in love with this place. Hot pools in the forest, little hike. Magic!
M.
Excellent wee hot pools. Has a regular cold pool and a range of hot pools. All naturally heated salt water. Towels available for $3 and great food options across the road.
M.
Great spot hidden away on SH2, will definitely be back. Friendly staff, great bush walk to the top mineral pools.
C.
My family and I grew up in Wairoa in the 60/70/80s, Dad being a Policeman. On many occasions we would drive to Morere for a soak and visit friends in Nuhaka. I love the smell of the fragrant ocean smelling water and the native bush walk up to the Nikau pools. A unique and beautiful location.
N.
A blast from the past. A bit different to when I last visited 30 more yrs ago. Lovely setting, lovely temperature
M.
Great hot springs. We got lucky and there were few and then no one else at the dipping pools while we where there. It was almost a private experience. The walk through the forest was nice too!
G.
Wonderful soak in the private pools after a pleasant walk on the ridge track. Beautiful forest. Well maintained tracks. Friendly and efficient hosts.
G.
Take your time, take a picnic, take some water. You're going to need it for the hotter pools. We enjoyed ourselves but have to admit I almost passed out from all the hot and hot pools. You have to watch that.
Enjoy! 💕
C.
Enjoyed having a soak, picnic in the grounds and then discovering more pools in the bush with great conversations with others enjoying the soak
D.
It was amazing being bk there the walk to the hot pools n the bush was amazing learnt a few things while the walk up top
E.
Kids loved it. Especially the pols up in the nikau forest. The staff were really friendly and helpful, especially the young girl at the front desk. Ngā mihi nui I te manaakitanga.

H.

K.

(Translated) Ideal for combining a nice hike on a very nice trail and ending with a hot bath in a very beautiful setting. Use the pools a few minutes walk from the entrance rather than the easily accessible swimming pool.
(Original)
Idéal pour combiner une rando sympa sur un très beau sentier et terminer par un bain chaud dans un très beau cadre. Privilégiez les bassins à qq minutes de marche de l'entrée plutôt que la piscine facilement accessible.

(Translated) Good value for money, the pools are clean and the staff go out of their way.
