This is such a beautiful location. We went here for dinner whilst visiting the Bay of Islands. We had a table on the balcony - the sea views were lovely and the setting was very tranquil. The service was excellent and of a high standard. Food was delicious with good sized portions. Extensive wine list. A trip to Russell would not be complete without a visit to the Duke. Highly recommended.

Excellent service during a busy lunchtime. We had calamari as a shared starter and it was very good. The seafood chowder was boasted by the waiter, saying it is the best in the bay. Well, in my opinion, it isn't. It's better than average but lacked in flavour. For $32 for a serving of chowder, I question the value. (Years ago they did have the best - but that was a different recipe and it used to be served in a cobb loaf.) The burger was delightful, served with exceptionally good chips. It's the first time for me to have chips that had cooled down but remained crispy and tasty.
We'll definitely be back in spite of my rating of three. It would have scored higher if the chowder lived up to it's reputation. It's a great location for a meal in a historic building.

Stayed in the waterview room. Great views, private and sheltered balcony a little back from the street. Nice separation of living and sleep. House keeping, a main reason for staying in a hotel, were excellent and delightful. Breakfast is very prescribed with no ability to have eggs your way. I don’t know if this is a staffing issue but very strange. We ended up doing hell hole bagels on the balcony most mornings, highly recommend. Its conveniently situated across the street from the back entrance. The duke burger split at lunch was lovely. We did dinner once which was nice. The service was lovely across our stay. I think i preferred winter, with the fire and bar going. Waiting for the. end of restrictions

Restaurant is fantastic! Large, spacious building full of history. Beautiful spot right on the waterfront. Friendly and helpful staff. Great service. Fantastic food! Seafood platter is a must for all foodies! Highly recommend

Great place to go to. Had a fabulous lunch and fantastic service. The waitress was very attentive and explained everything exceptionally well. The only small complaint that I would make was that the cheese board was lacking in the quantity of the cheeses.

Had a great meal, slightly small portions but everything we had was excellent. Extensive wine and drinks list, lovely, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Extremely busy in holiday periods, book well in advance.

Stopped here for lunch on the balcony. Just wonderful. At a difficult time for hospitality in the far north these guys were great. Fantastic service and food to match. Snapper biltong was amazing (closer to a spiced sashimi) and the burger the best I have had in a long time. Wine flights were the cherry on top. Thank-you!!!

Pretty disappointed about our dinner here tonight (Wednesday). Have been before and always loved it. Starters were great, service was slow, wine was late arriving and (bless) I had to open it myself as the waiter didn’t know how to open a bottle. My partners pork belly was inedible and when we paid the manager decided to take the dessert off the bill instead... while that is appreciated, I would expect that they would remove the bad dish. Felt like the manager was begrudgingly giving us something rather than addressing the actual issue (he argued it was normal but we did comment that the same dish looked good on other tables). Feeling a bit sorry for them as obviously covid is making things tough, but that doesn’t excuse bad food. Won’t be in a rush to come back.
