Where to start, boys trip away stayed in this incredible slice of history. Excellent food, drink and entertainment inc sat night karaoke. Locals and just whole spot made our trip to this remote place well worth and memorable
A.
Great stay, brilliant drive in (which will lose its charm when sealed). Great staff, great food - both dinner and breakfast, and awesome accommodation in the old post office. Top spot, worth the drive...made better by the staff.
J.
Such a special place on the Forgotten Highway. We got our coffee served by a friendly and smiling lady, we got our chats, we even got a stamp in our passport! It's worth visiting the place (if it's open, and we were lucky!)
J.
Staff great, accommadation as expected but don't expect the beds to stay in one place they have a bit of a roll on. To stop put a shoe under 1 wheel. Really good night.
A.
Stopped off at the Whangamomona Hotel for a yummy hot chocolate while driving the Forgotten World Highway. The staff were super friendly and the building was beautiful and historical, it reminded me of the Blackball Hotel on the West Coast, South Island.
R.
Nice stop for a beer and rest half way down the forgotten highway. The hotel serves anything from coffee, cakes, bar food and beers. There is also a small knick Knack craft shop across the street well worth a browse.
R.
An unexpected journey along a forgotten highway. It was really well with the trip. Make sure you fill your petrol tank as there is no gas station for 150kms. There's a Great hotel here for a pitstop, a post office, and 2 or 3 other shops all with.heaps of warstories and some great history.
j.
This is an amazing out of this world go back in time experience. No cell phone no TV. And minimal wifi. Amazing big portioned meals exquisitely cooked. Amazing friendly staff. Highly recommend going there to experience peace and slower life. Great for a bit of history.
C.
A welcome cold beer after driving the Forgotten Highway. Need to return with more time and stay the night? Interesting locals!
R.
Absolutely loved it. stopped here for a cider and lunch, stamped my passport, played piano and hanged around on the main street of this quirky place :)
History is very interesting too, and every year they celebrate the republic anniversary which includes goat racing and milking competitions... should come back again!
No petrol station so make sure to fuel your car all the way at Taumarnui or Stratford
t.
Very good atmosphere. Awsome food and awsome people . Oldschool rustic. Cool little mini putt course too
F.
We were supposed to be staying at the lodge for one night for a girls weekend away. Unfortunately Covid was detected in the water nearby at Stratford and for to two members of our group the risk was too high for their circumstances. Darcy was contacted and she was really understanding of our situation, even though it was quite last minute. Due to the level of understanding and professionalism displayed we have no hesitation in recommending this accommodation provider. And we cannot wait to come and stay with the residents of the republic hopefully in early 2022! Thanks heaps and see you then 😎
A.
A delightful place to visit. An amazing photograph display showing the long history of the hotel. If you're visiting the township, make sure you visit.
W.
Absolutely loved our stay at the whangamomona hotel. Meals, service accomodation all fabulous. Friendly people.
D.
Just a beautiful place in the middle of nowhere. If you're going buy it's an absolute must to stop by and even just get a coke if you're driving by.
N.
Lovely meal friendly staff who went out of their way to make you comfortable. Beautiful old building.

A.
Your only hope after long drive on sh43, to be fair not worse the long drive
Sh43 need to much attention, government need to give love to this area
Not recommend for people that feel bored easily
F.
Amazing coffee and scones, friendly staff, very interesting place, would have loved to stay a bit longet.
P.
Wonderful place to visit, awesome areas to have a rest in, food was prompt and tasty....
L.
Gr8 today lovely place for a visited with VCC Car Rally in New Plymouth.
S.
Second stay, 11 years between (a few) drinks. We had the attic room which is to be avoided if you're over 65 but the bonus was we had the bathroom to ourselves. Food is excellent, Richard and Vicky are great hosts.
V.
Restored hotel in a remote place. A nice setting. If you don't like driving corners you will not like getting there. Some in the group stayed the night and were happy with that. Some thought their food could be better others including me were happy. Worth the trip.
C.
Wonderful lovely family owners.Yummy dinner
N.
It is a Wonderful, Friendly, Welcoming Hotel. Food and beds both great
K.
A must for any Kiwi to visit while travel abroad does not come easily. The history of the area is enough without sampling some above average pub fare. And the Dark Ale is the best companion for quite possibly the largest and fastest lamb shanks you'll ever find. Don't forget your passport like I did.
L.
Tucked away on the forgotten highway, quite a gem on the right day.
Suppose it comes down to luck...we arrived to a friendly bunch hanging outside having a few in the sun.
The staff great✔️ 10/10
The atmosphere this day 10/10
Apparently, not worth staying at the campground behind...it's a horri...
But this pub is worth a stop over.
Little playground across the road for the kids, and a interesting she'd/ store opposite the pub.
A.
Great history- Great food..- World famous in Nz.. Whangamomona Republic lives here.
Buy The T-shirt!
I.
Fabulous historic Inn with amazing photos of life years ago. A touch of humour in that the town has declared itself a republic and past Mayor's have been a goat and a poodle.
The hotel is on the Forgotten Highway, a narrow winding road through gorges and between rolling hills. It's best done in good weather.
C.
I was hesitant about driving to this historic hotel in centre of NZ but my fear was unwarranted. The road is tarsealed with beautiful scenery.
What a grand hotel rich in history and photos adorn the walls which the locals are very proud.
The staff and locals are fantastic and treat you like family very warm and welcoming.
The rooms are comfortable with shared bathrooms.
Meals are a tad expensive but well worth it with generous portions and staff are accommodating with your travel arrangements.T/shirts and trinkets remind you of your stay .
This town is a republic and there is a story to be told behind this.
Don’t forget your passport as this can be stamped.
Wether passing through on way to Stratford or Taumarunui on bike trail or motorbike or rail journeys this is an iconic NZ stop, and a must do. TUIT
M.
Epic well kept secret. Super friendly family run local business.
Great food and portions.
A ton of memorbilallia which is well priced as well it has accommodation or you can camp down the road which is a fantastic set up.
S.
Super friendly hosts. Hands down best chicken burger and chips we have ever had. Highly recomend.
r.
Very nice food nice staff well worth stopping in should of made a weekend stay. Nice tidy motorcamp run by Richard within walking distance of whanga pub.take your passport get it stamped.
M.
Love the historic story of the place. Love the food in hotel yummo
S.
Lovely place, good food and amazing staff. Everyone was super friendly and accommodating. They were happy to recommend the safest GF options from the menu. All in all a great experience, we'll be back 😁
D.
Arrived just after Melbourne cup finished great atmosphere though noisy. Dining area much quieter. Great meal and service very good. Great to see integrity of its history kept.
J.
Had a very nice lunch here!! Epic location
B.
A very comfortable quiet nights stay way out in the country. The last time I had been here was about 20yrs ago & I didn't stop but this time I did.
I enjoyed being there & found the locals pretty friendly, the beer cold & the food excellent. For a pub this far away from the rest of NZ the prices were pretty good taking into consideration that everything has to be carted in from Stratford or elsewhere.
Would I go back? Well yes but if i wait another 20yrs i might miss the boat as I'm not getting any younger.
The road trip getting to & from the Whangamomona Hotel is know as The Forgotten Highway, if you enjoy NZ scenery then take time out to drive this road but slow down & enjoy the drive & pull over to let trucks etc pass. Its amazing the amount of wildlife I saw on my drive. By the way if you are not keen on driving on shingle or narrow roads then you should consider letting someone else do the driving. Regardless just enjoy.
d.
Me, and my dad visited the hotel to stay for the night, and I enjoyed it heaps. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, the food was great, the bedroom size was good for the 2 of us, and we both enjoyed relaxing in front of the fire after dinner.
L.
Delicious food. Lovely people and service. A welcome stop for us on the Forgotten Highway for lunch. We had a nice walk around reading up on the history of the area. We didn't stay the night so can't comment on that.
B.
Loads of history here.
A great atmosphere generated by locals and visitors alike. I found it rather unique compared to most places , maybe due to its isolation and remoteness.
I visit here regularly and appreciate it being here as it's halfway between two places on the main highway system and overlooked by most travelers.
Access to the pub is via a very hilly and winding road , but so beautiful scenery .
N.
Nice and real quite place to visit
J.
Great country hospitality. Good food and a well stocked bar.
L.
Tucked away on the forgotten highway, quite a gem on the right day.
Suppose it comes down to luck...we arrived to a friendly bunch hanging outside having a few in the sun. …
D.
Look.... I had an issue with buying a sweat shirt. But I'm not going there. Wonderful place. Magic scenery from Stratford to Whanga. Do yourself a favour and visit
D.
Loved it! Have wanted to go here for years and it didn't disappoint. Good food, great atmosphere and friendly staff
D.
Arrived just after Melbourne cup finished great atmosphere though noisy. Dining area much quieter. Great meal and service very good. Great to see integrity of its history kept.
S.
Great place to stay. Friendly staff. 5 minutes each way and you have seen the town. Food is to die for. Great accommodation.
B.
Wonderful atmosphere, friendly people and good food. Accommodation was awesome.
D.
Was a good stop over and the locals are friendly
A.
Excellent stay very friendly staff that couldn't do enough for you. Thank you so much for making our stay so memorable
D.
Staff weren’t wearing masks. A lot of through traffic so need to step up.
K.
Amazing venue and history. A must-do to stop for a beer... very peaceful and isolated. The journey to it is amazing!
J.
Special place . Worth staying and visiting to get experience the' what we do around here'.
This is the cultural learning of travelling and well worth experiencing. Helpful people in a pleasant environment that even included the President of the Republic and a wonder cat. Good choice of meals and suitable for hungry travellers or workers. Lovely fire and magazines.Power had failed then came on after a day .The linesman came in to use the phone to check if others in the valley had power. The place is the centre of the Republic, the valley and the community. Do not just get your passports stamped and leave.
Support, stay , and enjoy.
B.
Richard and Vicki are such great hosts! This hotel is a destination point that is one of those "must do's" Fun and friendly, and our pub meal was delish!
J.
Historic, quirky, middle of "forgotten highway". On the "road less travelled", you should visit.
Beer is good, welcome was warm and genuine.
Put this on your to-do list, but be prepared for the time required to get there
E.
Friendly staff and great atmosphere. The food, breakfast, lunch and dinner was superb. Although the room was big, neat and the huge bed very comfortable, the lack of an ensuite or basin in the room was disappointing.
The hotel has maintained its historical authenticity and is well maintained. We enjoyed the experience and recommend a visit.
D.
Loved it! Have wanted to go here for years and it didn't disappoint. Good food, great atmosphere and friendly staff
P.
Only visited the bar. The girl working there was really nice, you can also get your passport stamped for $2. The milk in my coffee tasted weird.
N.
Great historic pub. Stayed night after 'Forgotten World Rail Tour'. Nice meal. Friendly staff. Accomodation bit excessive - $150 single room, 2 single (comfy) beds, basin to wash etc but had shared toilets and showers. Parents had double room $150 - no basin and shared toilet/showers etc. No breakfast included or amenities to make tea and coffee.
A.
You must stop here if you are travelling The Forgotten Highway and stay the night. It is easy to book online. The staff are friendly, with a relaxed atmosphere. Good menu. There is absolutely no cell reception or signal so make sure you have a book or whatever it is that you used to do before smart phones were invented.
N.
Decent pub with friendly staff, we met George and there was a cat this time. Food was bit less than average than we remember 8 years back. Never the less a great stop for some relaxation and soaking up in the history.
M.
Great atmosphere, awesome food, real friendly staff. Don't forget to get your passport stamp.
t.
The Hotel is extremely basic, there is no mobile reception and no wifi available, the drinks are also quite expensive, the room are very basic with no tv, fridge, or any other appliances, and shared bathrooms. The food is fantastic though. Ok for a visit and a feed, but don't bother staying the night unless you have to.
L.
Eclectic wander back through time. Lovely and peaceful. We added to the historical ambience with our "almost classic" 1997 Ford Fairmont which we have owned for 20 of it's 23 reliable years...
J.
Cool historic pub. Has that proper honest friendliness you don't often find in cities. Amazing road in; if you have a car, and you like driving it, this is the place to have lunch. Nice wee town, and don't forget to get your passport :)
V.
The adventure over the Forgotten Highway, the scenery. Great food and very friendly staff. Blazing fire today as only 10° Little Republic in the middle of New Zealand. A step back in time.
D.
Stopped and enjoyed toasted sandwiches for lunch.
S.
Awesome atmosphere, very obliging hosts, no mobile coverage, wifi or tv but that makes it all the more fun. You really can escape the rat race here. Fun gravel road on the east side and VERY winding road on the western approach. But well worth the effort. Warm dry clean rooms and HOT showers. froendly locals too. Nice food and prompt service
Will be back again for sure....
R.
Anyone travelling the Forgotten Highway would be crazy to come so far off the beaten track and not stop in for a drink and a bite to eat. Lovely old pub set in picturesque valley. Hard to rave about a ham and salad sandwich but I couldn't have made a better one myself.
F.
A lot of history......relaxed and fun.
T.
Nice coffee, good historical pictures etc, breakfast was ok but fresh oil and butter would have been better. Muffins with margarine, chips and hashbrowns need the oil changed in cooker and eggs tasted odd too (maybe margarine used??). Overall ok meal, nice place, nice staff.
D.
We only stopped for a beer on the way through but it is a classic kiwi style hotel. Staff were great, it would be a very quiet and relaxing place to stay if you want to get away from life for a while.
F.
Nice place, feels very 'local'; The only place for miles. Nice food and friendly service. It's nice inside, but they also have a lovely garden out the back. This is especially good in fine weather.
F.
The service was average. As soon as we got there we wanted my friend to get the passport stamped and they refused to do it at that time. They would only serve us if we were ordering food (?) No reasons given. We order chips and beers, beers were nice, but I had to remind them about the chips after a long time. After we had our drinks and chips they were all good to stamp our passports, it only takes 2 seconds, I don't undertstand why they wanted us to wait. There is people thatn o ly stop there to get the passport signed and continue traveling.
J.
Great place to stop off after a long ride. Staff pleasant, food good.
N.
Nice and real quite place to visit
B.
Wonderful atmosphere, friendly people and good food. Accommodation was awesome.
J.
Great country hospitality. Good food and a well stocked bar.
N.
Great bit of history here lovely old hotel and township fantastic freindly staff and hospitality food is good and very generous serves for the money. Have stayed here several times now while working away
A.
I had read about the hotel before I set off to ride the Forgotten Worlds Highway. Thought that I'd try my luck and stop for some food and a room. I received a warm welcome by the hosts. They had a room for me (single $70) which I thought was reasonable. Room was basic, no on-suite, but had all that I needed, very clean. It was the middle of winter, I sat by the fire and enjoyed the ambience. The home brand Pale Ale was refreshing and I ordered the lamb shanks which were tender and the meal was hearty. No phone signal or internet which was great, really felt as if I was in the heart of the forgotten world.
C.
The the town of Whagamomona is picturesque with a rush history, the hotel is nice but is lacking some attention and restoration as sadly things like a great big satellite dish on the front roof spoiler the historic feel. Friendly staff and nice flat whites, with some interesting photos of local rugby teams over the ages.
K.
A great place to take a moment, and relax!
Great atmosphere, friendly helpful staff, lovely pub food, and great room.
E.
Historic building well worth a look. Lunch & drink only as passing through, driving the 'forgotten highway'. Friendly service. Food medoica. Coffee good. View quaint. Have the the T-shirt to prove it
P.
We stayed at this hotel last night after travelling down the Forgotten World Highway. The hotel was lovely for an old girl and showed the history of the area which was most interesting. We were fortunate to strike an evening full of the many locals and live music. Good singalong stuff and plenty of the dark beer flowing. Well done Richard and your team, you're doing a mighty fine job!! Thanks also to Anita for making us so welcome.
j.
Great place to stay, excellent service & very comfortable. Fabulous food with a good menu
D.
This is an amazing place to visit. Beautiful food, and lovely coffee and drinks. Alot of wonderful history here, and well worth visiting.
D.
Stayed here last night after traveling down the Forgotten World Highway. Had a warm welcome from the owners and locals. Facilities were very good, food was nice and we got our passports stamped.
S.
A great coffee and lovely meal surrounded by historic Whangamomona memorabilia in the beautiful historic hotel. Souvenirs, clothing, and books available. I loved my short time there and would love to come back and spend more time there.
W.
I don’t stay here I work here.its not full time but it’s enough to say this..
the service is awesome the people that own and run the place are awesome and people I like and can get along with.. it’s full of history and good times..the community that’s involved are also great.
Publicly I would to thank the pub owners for accepting me into their workplace and giving me an opportunity of a lifetime.
:.
Good to finally get to see it. Nice staff. Beers a bit expensive but I guess you have to expect it.
D.
The food was an A+ from me when the food arrived it was at perfect temperature to eat...the price is slightly high however but this pub is in the middle of nowhere so they have to make their money.the whole building is rustic and full of history that people are welcome to see...I have not stayed here ..but overall it's an A+ from me.well done.i belive it's a must stop buy and have a drink spot.
H.
We had some coffe over here and it was a good one!
Dont forget to get a stamp in your passport since you are entering the Republic!
They had a house pig - awkward but true! And somehow I liked it!
H.
Surprisingly happy with the quality of food here. You can get your passport stamp here with 5$ donation.
T.
Classic old pub in a 1 horse town. Our stay was just what we wanted for a low key NYE. Bed was excellent. Maybe the republic needs a sheriff as the prices at the bar are highway robbery. Nothing else to do ....captive market.
J.
I love Whanga! Great little place to stop to stretch the legs while heading along the Forgotten World Highway. Recently attended the 2019 Whamgamomona Republic day, absolutely brilliant day out, mutton sammys were on point! Also had a burger from the pub, pretty steep at $20 for a burger and chips, but was still tasty. A must visit.
K.
Historical sites and places are always good fun. No worries about this one. In the heart of the forgotten world highway between Stratford and Taumarunui. Awesome old Pub with great food and drinks and really good service. Must see part of New Zealand
G.
Every Kiwi should visit here atleast once in their life time. History, beauty and fun all in one place.
J.
Great day trip out with friends. Drove from Taumarunui to the Whanga Pub. Great wee spot in the middle of King Country.
P.
Easily worth another half star. Literally in the middle of nowhere ! An old fashioned country pub, straight out of the 1800's, marvellous history on the walls. Just great.
S.
Really cool old hotel. Friendly manager. Freshly cooked fish and chips.
D.
Nice pie and beer for lunch
A.
Friendly people. Such a classic country pub rich in character and history. Hard to come by these days. Wish we stayed over night. Will go again for sure and for us it was worth the journey.
A.
The only pub in Whangamomona and 150 km radius. They have preserved the history of the place. The pub staff is very friendly and you can see the development of the town since 1850. Look around for the photos in the pub to know the town history.
P.
We are motorcyclists from Auckland, and wanted to ride the Forgotten World highway. Not only was the ride fabulous, but also the hotel. And the publicans were very nice people. Chef was great too!
J.
Update: Please DO NOT stamp on your official passport as it is considered tampering official government document!! We learnt it the hard way.
This is the perfect place to stop when you are doing the Forgotten World Highway roadtrip, the capital of the Republic of Whangamomona. Nothing much, just a hotel with a few store and the President Park. Like the humour of the people here. Interesting historical exhibit in hotel, paid $2 for the passport stamp.
M.
Probably the cheapest way to have an international holiday if you live on the North Island, they use NZ currency and there is only border control one day per year. Not to mention obtaining dual citizenship is only a 5 dollar donation at the pub! Please only donate in cash so they can keep their nation's wealth away from the grubby paws of Wellington Beuraucrats! Service at the pub is great and a stop in the Republic is the best way to break up the gruelling drive of the forgotten world highway!
L.
Awesome place, great hosts- a must do if you havent already and go again if you have. Win win situation
M.
Amazing food. Great drive from New Plymouth. Fantastic atmosphere.
J.
Great atmosphere, a good stop over for the night. You can stay in the hotel or the new self contained cabins next door. Lovey meals and friendly hosts.
J.
Dinner and a beer on Sunday night. Great pie, mashed potato and peas. Lots of history on the walls, definitely worth a stop and to look at the surrounding village.
C.
Basic pub food. Great history memorabilia in pub. Good place to stop after long windy road
C.
Cool place to stop for a fed and beerzies, sounds like a interesting place if you were staying the night
M.
Classic old world pub and hotel in the middle of nowhere, spend the afternoon or stay the night and try the mini trains etc...Very tasty food and craft beers...
L.

P.
Great place for a beer and a meal on the Forgotten Highway. Definitely recommend, dont forget to get your passport stamped at this hidden Republic, small charge but worth it
B.
Stopped at this historic hotel for our REPUBLIC OF WHANGAMOMONA PASSPORT Est.1989. On THE WORLD'S FORGOTTEN HIGHWAY also brought a couple of souvenirs and had a friendly couple of ale's and a chat to the publican.
I.
Great place to visit, love these old towns.
T.
What a cool place! Perfect stop when doing the forgotten world highway. Go early to get some extra time to relax at the hotel outdoor tables.
M.
Cool middle of no where pub. Food was so fresh and tasty, perfect for my lunch on the forgotten world highway. Great service too by the gent and ladies.
S.
Great food and surroundings. We stayed in the old post office next door. Ask Richard in the hotel if you want to stay somewhere a bit different
G.
Flat out Sunday of long weekend long wait for lunch but boy was it worth it food wad really yum, lots of apologies for length of time but you could see they were doing their best.
J.
Warmed us up on a chill day. Nice food. Good beer. Friendly staff. A timewarp kiwi classic
L.
Cool little historical pub. Lots of reading material about the area and the republic. Make sure you buy a passport, all proceeds are donated to charity.
B.
This was a good experience but didn't live up to the hype. The melting moments were great.
R.
Great atmosphere, enjoyed my beer in the beautiful back garden.
S.
Very well cared for old hotel. Town with a rich, interesting history.
T.
Excellent. Definitely returning. The locals are fantastic. Thank you for a positive time.🙂❤
d.
Good food but you'd have to be passing to stop off here it's in the middle of nowhere ? But that's part of the attraction, don't forget to bring your passport.
G.
Excellent hospitality and menu
B.
It's the Whanga pub. You should go. It's iconic. Seeing we were in the area it seemed appropriate to take some of the kids out for a beer - so we took the big ones...
C.
Realy nice historic hotel and pub. Oodles of quirky stuff on the walls, excellent food and really nice staff give this place a lovely atmosphere
s.
Great food and nice quaint old hotel. The republic is a strange, quirky place to visit. Try to stay in the main hotel rather than the extended lodges.
P.
Stayed there night before the 20 tunnel tour. Nice comfortable accommodation, friendly staff, great meals and the best dark ale I've ever had
R.
We stopped by when doing the Forgoten world Highway. It's an awesome place, friendly staff. Got some chips and the passport stamp :)

T.
Enjoyed our night there...locals and campers were great company and meals were good ...lodge out back was warm and comfy ..thanks
I.
A real part of NZ culture and history, a place you have to stop at when driving the "forgotten highway". Get a passport and have it stamped as you're in the "republic of Whangamonona"
L.
Food was ok, drinks algood, loved the interior.
D.
great pub. good pub meal with a good beer. Hidden Highway.. a must for the off the beaten track driver
G.
Nice old pub. Interesting drive getting there
C.
Great spot on the Forgotten Highway. Stop for lunch. We didn't stay but rooms looked clean and tidy.
S.
Lovely place to stay, with friendly staff and interesting people. Very slow pace of life and a reflection of days gone by.
c.
Great people and friendly. Very expensive however. Loved the atmosphere of the pub and staff lovely.
L.
Lovely place, great heritage, accommodation available
R.
Worth a stop for a bite to eat and to explore. Service was polite if a bit short. Great food though.
S.
Great pub, good photos and history. Staff on but aren't hugely knowledgeable when asked where the best was made, which for the record is Hawkes Bay
A.
The forgotten highway from Taumarunui or Stratford will get you here. Nostalgic pub offering accommodation in the republic of Whangamomona. A must-do motorcycle ride!
s.
Out of the mad rush, sit back and relax. Food a little pricey for what u get, however being in the outback possibly understandable. Great place to leave the madness
S.
I love the rooms me my partner and 3 kids had fun in the pools and the rooms amazing thank you so very much we will be back again
S.
Awesome, such a lovely drive there, food great. Even brought T Shirts.
H.
Good food, food beer, good company and a good history. Superb place to visit and take a break from everything
C.
This is a funny little place with a funny little history. If you happen to be near the Forgotten Highway I would say that's worth making it all the way down to this little hotel. You can even get a stamp out of it.
L.
