Really enjoyed our lunch and drinks at Roots Bar. The burgers and fries were amazing. Burgers were very well crafted and fries were crispy and fluffy, one of a kind! Great selection of drinks and a relaxing garden space. Will definitely return when we are next in Takaka.

Super pumping and busy bar/restaurant and great choice of food on the menu. We really loved the fried chicken and tacos. Various seating areas inside and out giving lots of options.

This place is amazing! I made the trek to Takaka from Nelson specifically to try this place out and it did not disappoint! I had the Wild Pork Taco and the Jamaican Curry Goat Burger and both were amazing and like nothing I’ve ever had before. There was also a beautiful selection of local beer brewed in the Tasman region as well. Mask mandates were enforced and frankly recent responses from the owner defending her staff speaks to how much care and passion is put into the whole business. If you don’t work hospitality, just remember it’s a really tough time for all hospo right now and most are doing their very best!

We recommend this spot. It has a great almost-bohemian atmosphere. Apparently there is an open mic night during the week. I would love to visit for this event and sample another delicious local craft beer. The service is excellent, attentive and accommodating. The menu has a goat theme, so we tried a goat curry. It didn’t have the traditional bones included but this made it worth the $26. The fish taco would have been better with a few more good hunks of fish but was tasty nevertheless. Do stop in if you’re near Takaka.

Great spot for lunch! Such a cool place and atmosphere, we’re here in the off season so it’s pretty quiet, but the staff were really friendly and the food was amazing. Definitely recommend the Belly and Bogan burgers. Had some great options on the menu that you don’t see very often too, will absolutely be back.

I was working in the Takaka area for the week. Points for being open on a Monday. Points for good local beers. A massive gold star for the Jamaican Goat curry. It's a really good thing if after two weeks I can still remember this meal and how good it was. Oh and the staff were really cool too

Great service and absolutely awesome food. The only let down was that you had to walk through the smoking area to get inside the restaurant. But saying that the vib was friendly and the atmosphere was comfortable and sitting around the fireplace outside was just awesome. If you go you must have a burger any burger they very good and cheese cake must have cheese cake

Great food, service variable. One young man who took our order was excellent, the other not so much and I suspect had we not been proactive he would have pretty much ignored us. But again great food, well done.

Super cool place! Beautiful food absolutely loved the goat burger. Only reason it isn't five stars is the service wasn't very good..uninterested young people who were more interested in chatting to each other than giving menus ect..kind of the reason we were there for food. Cool place though!

Quite a funky place with great staff and excellent food. The chicken wings in particular really full of taste and cooked to perfection. Crisp and yet still moist.

This place is something special, great local craft beer selection and the food is fantastic. Atmosphere is relaxed rustic, just what you wish for in Golden Bay!

Arrived early January. It was so busy you could barely move. Staff were dealing with massive volumes of guests, food and drinks orders and dealing with the added weight of the Covid protocols. They were all obviously very tired but happy and positive. In these holiday towns staff often work 14-18 hour days in the high season to deal with the shear volume of guests. They do this while dealing with a myriad of associated challenges: running low on stock, slowed cooking and bar times, low energy, not enough seating, equipment breaking, less than sober punters, road-weary mums and dads...the list goes on. Trust me, when it gets this busy its easy to let the pressure of it all effect the staff performance, or at very least their energy. On our visit all of this was apparent, but NONE of it was having an effect on the smiling faces and welcoming attitude of the staff and managers. I hope you all get a well deserved break in after the summer rush. Cheers for the cold beer and hot dinner.

Stopped here for lunch and loved it! Had the gangster chicken wings, goat burger and goat curry. All amazing. The wings are probably the best wings we’ve ever tasted! 😍

Such a great spot! We stopped here after a 4 day hike along Abel Tasman and it was so worth it. Food was great, beers were great, staff was great! Wish we could’ve gone on a night they were having live music....because I’m sure that’s probably great too!

We had the bogan burger and fries and it would have to be one of the best burgers I've had, the sauce was amazeballs! ! The atmosphere was lovely, we sat outside. The waitress was very friendly and happy 😊😊 we came from chch and will definitely be back.

Outstanding beef burger, very good “Southern fried chicken” (and I’m a qualified South-East American). Great space indoor and out, good beer and good fries (or chips, whatever). Monday’s are a great deal with discounted burgers, and the only shop around with free WiFi. Score.

This spot is a must if you are ever in the area. I had the Jamaican Goat curry and it was so delicious with the meat and flavors all done to perfection. The staff are all so nice and welcoming, the atmosphere is very laid back with great music. Seems like a very popular spot amongst the locals, it was getting very busy as we were leaving so lucky we got there abit earlier. Thank you guys for a great experience.

Decent fries. Some of the tap beer was warm but changed for a cold one. Service average, could have been better.

Happy service, good food and a great vibe. We went on a Friday evening and struck it lucky with some ongoing live entertainment too. Prices were reasonable too, though the kids portions were a little on the small side, especially the tiny burgers.

Awesome place, highly recommend the burger specials... I had both beef and venison, great flavor play on classic combinations, fast friendly service and a variety of beers on tap.

Went back for the beef burger! The housemade BBQ sauce is some of the best I've had outside of the United States. Not to mention the very tasty local beers and ciders on tap. Great pub atmosphere - if I'd been staying in Takaka I would have happily checked out the live band they had organised for the night.

If I could give 6 stars, I would! Went here for lunch and was seriously impressed. The best Reuben I've ever had. My partner got the fried chicken burger and loved it as well. We both got poutine (cheese and gravy) on the side and it was the perfect portion. Not at all skimpy on the toppings. We left feeling so satisfied. The place itself is funky and has a laid-back vibe, with great music. Would definitely recommend!!

Thanks guys for accepting us for dinner at 9pm after our part of the Grea Walk. Nothing better than burgers after 10hours of tramping in the week end ! Nice berry cider too :)

I’ve eaten most things off the menu now. I’m yet to have something that’s not amazing. The meat is all organic and traceable and epic, the burgers are all epic (especially the pork, goat, and squeaky) and the beers are all crafty and strong af. I’ll go back again and again, this place rules.

Was staying in Takaka and after a long drive from Christchurch fancied a burger. I had the vegan burger, was really tasty as was kids beef burger, chicken and pork bun. Staff were friendly and great value for money.

Doesn't look like much from the outside but the service, food and coffee were all amazing. Nice big outdoor area with a smaller indoor area. Perfect for a sunny day.

Don't judge this bar by the outside—with a wood fire and good music it's warm, cozy and lively with great service and friendly staff. The food is great and beer is not bad either!

Small menu but a big outdoor veranda. We sat inside and it was a quiet atmosphere. Decent selection of beers. Very varied selection of burgers so, though it was not large, was still good.

Funky place and equally funky bar staff! Burgers and chips were great, and they have plenty of local beers on tap and in the fridge. Cocktails and desserts looked amazing as well!

Nice bar at the end or beginning of Takaka, great food, freshly brewed combucha, music, nice atmosphere, outside seating with fire, friendly, I had spicy chicken burger, garlic bread and a gluten free choc brownie, all were really nice. Well worth a visit, also have live music!

A must if in this lovely part of NZ(Golden Bay)Had a brilliant hamburger and chips washed down by a tap hazy IPA.Setting is great,staff cheerful and helpful.Place has outside fire and looks setup for live music.Enjoy

Hands down the best place to eat, drink and see live music in Takaka. Wild hunted meats, veg options, interesting specials and a wide selection of NZ craft beers. Definitely recommended.

Used to be my favourite stop when arriving in Golden Bay. As they had a local brewer supplying great ginger beer however they have changed suppliers and no more ginger beer. Pity as staff said it was very popular

Really artsy place and good hangout spot there are alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Very nice and cheap food which was all really nice. Have a fireplace if it gets cold in the evening and free WiFi if your need to escape the boredom of the people you are with. Good selection of burgers and non burgers (says that on the menu). My favourite place from my visit in Takaka.

What an amazing place! The atmosphere was awesome, the only thing better were the delicious burgers and the genius homemade barbeque sauce. I would recommend you to go to Takaka just for this place.

The Roots had great burgers and if you don't eat bread you can have each burger option "naked". For a great vegan option I recommend the Naked Moby

I Came here because the queue at the takeaway next door was huge... What a difference 6 bux made. Sat in peace while I devoured probably the best burger and fries I've ever had, washed down with a lovely hop fed pilsner while watching the colourful characters that walked past. This place will be my go to whenever I come through takaka.

What do you do, It's raining and you need food and Wifi to check out your options. You end up at Roots bar with a good selection of beers, good music, "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" playing at the background. And then I forget to mention the food, beyond expectations. Makes me wonder why we did not go to Roots bar the day before :-)
