This Backpackers is up for sale (Jan 2022). The pandemic has hit it hard, but it is still a great place to stay. Very central and handy to everything. Kerry, the owner was very friendly and helpful. The price for a room seemed high for a backpackers, but then this is a very clean place in a hugely popular tourist location.

Met Chris and Kerry, Great hosts/owners and will help get your accommodation sorted out no wuckers👍they are located in the perfect spot with great outdoor area to sit. It's a good and clean hostel.

Feels like home with excellent service. Had been great living experience.. Highly recommended 😇

Nice and Warm place to stay.. location is awesome! everything is simply walkable.. All restaurants, cafes, shops and the lake.. If you're looking for a budget friendly stay in the heart of the city.. this is a good one

Good location, fair price and seems to be tidy enough. Rented a room good for 5 people and we had our own toilet. We were able to cook our own food, play pool (2$ per game) and their is laundry available if needed. Only negative thing was a lot of insects/bugs flying in the room. I think they were attracted to the light. They was a certain coming off the A/C too but gradually disappears.

Such a cute well laid out place! The room was very spacious with a lovely view of the lake with very clean facilities and an excellent kitchen. Having designated free parking was a huge bonus as well. Will definitely be back!

Basic, but clean, room with lovely view over the Lake. Right in downtown with a car yard's bright lights on all night. The street sweepers & rubbish trucks were our wake-up call! Good bed & facilities.

Excellent place to stay. Staff is amazing place is nice and tidy and has all the essentials you need in kitchen to toilets and shower. I'll def be coming back thank u for the outstanding service and nice stay

Lovely budget friendly hostel in the heart of Taupo. Can rent bikes, have a cheap on site bar as well. Staff were super friendly and helpful too

We had the perfect spot with an outside area. Loved it so much asked to stay another night in the same room and staff were happy to help. Thank you!! (Also super cheap bar!)

Clean and great amenities. There's a laundry, lovely communal area with bar and the kitchen is easy to use. It's also in a very good location, and you can walk to shops and restaurants easily.

I really liked the place with friendly staff and country-like climate in the bustling centre of the city. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable - no signs of the bedbugs. Only disadvantage is that you cannot bring your own alcohol and the pub closes at 9 pm, so you really can't grab any beer in here.

Stayed one night here, and the price was cheap, the room was clean and also had decently comfy beds. The wifi is good, the kitchen/main hall is very comfy. The best part of this place is the cheap, cheap bar. 4$ beers and wine is nothing to sneer at, and their middle-earth themed cocktails were very tasty! If you want to book with a few friends and get liquored up on the cheap, this is the place.

Nice place. Good accommodation with good location. There is pool table ($2 if I'm not mistaken). Kitchen has everything you need.

Taupo Urban Retreat is a good place to spend the night in Taupo. The hostel is very lively and the staff is friendly and welcoming. The shared kitchen is nicely organized and has all the equipment you need. The room we stayed in was small but clean as well as the private ensuite. I would definitely recommend it.

Not bad. Room was a little hot and something bit me all over my feet during the night. More of a party hostel then I expected - bar, beer pong, stag parties - but it wasn't too loud from the rooms and the bar closes pretty early. Bathrooms were fine, staff was really nice. Was a little strange to not be able to bring beer in due to their licensing.

This is a lovely backpackers. Our ensuite room was lovely, however it was very hot and stuffy and it was hard to sleep. The fan was too noisy for light sleepers and the small window to the corridor provides little relief. Other than that it was a great stay.

We were there for only one night, but it was a memorable experience. Great atmosphere. Excellent staff. Special mention to Rob, thankyou for your hospitality. We'll definitely drop by and say hi if we find ourselves in the vicinity. For those planning on staying there, who indulge in a little ethanol, I recommend the Mexican Winter. Soul warming on a cold winter's night. 5 stars

Fantastic service, super helpful staff. Awesome location, clean, comfortable...everything you could want in a hostel and more... And all for a fantastic price.

I was at the Hostel during the early phase of the Covid 19 outbreak and had to be tested because I felt unwell. Since I had to isolate myself, the Urban Retreat team helped me out with everything and took care of me which is not a matter of course. The outstanding hospitality and kindness helped me a lot at this difficult situation far away from home. Being at home again I'm still in contact with the hostel manager and I am really thankfull for all the special people i met there. Thanks for all

First time staying in a hostel and it was perfect. Great spot. Clean and comfortable. Cheap beer, free WiFi, chili and beer $8 combo, and coin laundry. It was perfect for a one night stay.

Overall the hostel was ok. The beds however were pushed together so you couldn't use the ladder for top bunk and the room was small. Our bags took up most of the floor in the room. The WiFi was unlimited and free throughout.

The hostel was clean, just the price was a little higher.

Overall great. Good location and helpful and friendly staff. The kitchen and common areas were good, but the rooms are a bit dusty and dont smell that great. My allergies (which usually arent an issue when staying at hostels, or ever really) were acting up when I tried to sleep on the provided bedsheets and pillowcase. Perhaps the pillow hasnt been given a good wash in a while or was recently kept on the floor. My friend also noted the dry-dusty air was giving her a sore throat. This wouldnt keep me from staying here again, but it's what is keeping me from giving a 5-star review.

Nice warm and cozy place, we stayed there over 1 night and late check in wasn’t problem. Good communication and pricing.

A nice hostel, slightly odd vibe. Due to bar license you can’t bring your own alcohol, and quite a few of the rooms don’t have windows (though they do have sky light tubes).

Really friendly and helpful receptionist, who definitely knows the area. Rooms are decent and the set out makes it easy to find stuff. All round great place to take a quick break or 3.

Rooms are nice though the dorms are small if people don't put their bags in the under bed drawers. A nice tv room and bar, also computer use and good Wi-Fi

Christmas in Taupo is full of travellers and great locals. Staying at the Taupo Urban retreat was no exception, from the wonderful, welcoming staff, to the fantastic owners who prepared our Christmas meal. Rooms and amenities are affordable, the shopping centre is a stones throw away, and the sights and attractions are a phone call away. Our highlight was meeting new people and sharing experiences in and around the bar and outdoor area. Will be a memory and an experience that will be hard to top.

Laid back environment taking care of all needs. Laundry, excursion booking, bar, activities, bike hire, events, daily chilli con carne. Very clean and well kept. Staff friendly. 5 stars if it we're a bit more homey.

Staff very helpful and friendly. Room was standard for a sharing dorm. Didn't like that room opened straight onto street but had no problems. It's in a great central spot

This place is really good we were only planning on staying one night but decided to stay another. Kerry is amazing, she looked after us and booked our attractions, ie helicopter ride, huka falls jet boat ride and sailing around taupo lake. Hope you have a sunny day off and many thanks for all your help Kerry it's very much appreciated xx As for the urban retreat it's a clean ( and I mean clean) comfortable friendly place and very good value would recommend to anyone on a budget .

Place was alright, the staff were very friendly but the place just screams 3 stars. My bed was broken and I got a sore back sleeping in an awkward position.

Staff was nice. Was unlucky enough to end up in a bunk bed, where one German couple were doing "their ting" on the bottom bunk. Other than that cant whine.

Good hostel, with friendly and enthousiastic staff. They claim to be the cheapest bar in New Zealand. Sanitary is decent and rooms are clean.

Excellent location for a hostel right smack dab in the middle of Taupo. Walking distance to Pak N Save. The receptionist Cathy/Katy is very friendly too.

Quite a distance away from Intercity bus terminal. Fast food like Mac, Burger King and KFC is quite near. There is a BP petrol koisk nearby to get grocery.

Urban is really the place to stay in Taupo. Staff is really nice and helpfull. Rooms are clean. They have onsitebar with cheap beer and very cheap dinnerdeals. Its a great atmosphere and very easy to get to know other backpackers. Its right in the center of Taupo.

The rooms are clean and the homemade chili con carne for $5 is pretty good. Unfortunately the bathrooms aren't really nice, but it's ok.

I stayed with the urban Backpackers with friend of mine for a Guys night in Taupo we had a great time the women at the front desk was a great help and very cheerful you'll be surprised how far great customer service goes, We had a great time drinking hassle free and from the get go were made to feel welcome Thank you very much for having us hope we weren't too rowdy

Stayed in the double room with ensuite. It was all good but not sure if the sheets and pillow cases were changed and there were some hairs we saw.

The toilets and the rooms are clean. The outdoor area is also spacious and very pleasant.
