Matakana is known for it beautiful scenic beaches and wineries. The town itself is quaint and somewhat… busy as, even on a quiet weekday! With Aucklanders using it as a backyard to escape the mundane Monday to Friday, you can be sure this area will be buzzing with people by the droves in the weekend. If you happen to want some good nosh at reasonable prices, then head to the Rusty Pelican. You can’t miss it, it takes up a whole corner. They have an extensive menu even for takeaway. All I can say is yum and the portions were decent. Service was on point and you were made to feel welcome, vaccinated or not. Options were given, good on you for being proactive and kind.

4.5 stars! All the meals were very delicious. The portions were way larger than we expected as well and we needed takeaway boxes (you can easily just choose a few meal options to share with friends). Nice atmosphere as well. Will definitely come again.

A great stop before going to omaha, tawharanui and other beaches nearby. Great service, great food, heaps of serving.

Service is quick despite it was during lunch rush, great food and service, the mussels is a must try, wish there were more bread to soak up the creamy garlic sauce.

Love this place we go every year and have a big group and play pool. We where disappointed when we were told that we couldn't play pool because of Covid while we were on the orange traffic light system. But the bizarre thing was the guy behind the bar was telling us this with no mask on and heaps of people standing at the bar with no masks. Anyway we moved into the restaurant part and had great food and great Service.

Really nice restaurant, they were down a bit on staff so told us we couldn't have deserts pretty much right as we went to order them. The late notice was annoying as they should've told us this as we arrived or before we finished all of our food but we ended up getting desert anyway so that was good.

My girlfriend and I had a horrible experience at the Matakana Pub and we’re questioning going home after dinner when we passed the Rusty Pelican. The music was playing outside was inviting so we followed through and went inside, the sports bar side has such an inviting atmosphere! We spoke to a big fella behind the bar who gave us a laugh and made us the best margaritas I’ve ever had! The service was excellent! I didn’t realize they have a massive restaurant on the other side as well! We’ll be in for Pizza next Tuesday for shure!

Customer service was awesome but the food was okay. Everything seem to have garlic in it which overpowered the taste of everything, steak could do with some sauce and the creamy mushroom didn't taste like one.

Both had the 500gm Rump Steak Friday Night Sports Bar deals. Absolutely perfectly cooked and presented. Both couldn't produce a clean plate, full to the eyeballs. One doggie bag provided on request. Parking was a major issue, Matakana was "going off". Suspect some vehicles were NOT restaurant guests when I did a quick check inside both sides of The Rusty.

I usually enjoy coming here but I didn't really enjoy the beef hamburger that's quite expensive.. With chips. It was pretty tasteless and not big at all. I had chicken and mushroom fettuccine which was really delicious.. This was the 3rd time I had a burger here.. The lamb burgers before lockdown was good Itbaeem to have shrunk and increase in price. The fries was not great I left those .

Cozy, clean, friendly staff, great food / seafood. Many flies around though, and a bit annoying, so there's still room for improvement. 4 stars for me because of flies. If you are ok with flies around then this is a 5 stars restaurant

The food is always amazing here and when we made a reservation I asked if it was possible to have a seat by the fire. And they made it happen. Lovely food. We went this time for Valentine's day (considering there were alot of couples there, they could have tried to love the place up with a couple of Valentine's decorations) we booked a table prior which was a great idea, as they were full. Now the good and the bad. Good: The food portions are big, be prepared. The food tastes great 👍I had the Calamari for entree and chicken fettuccini for main, both were yummy. The calamari was crumbed perfectly, with a lovely drizzled sauce. The chicken fettuccini had lots of garlic and mushroom sauce. My partner had Mussels for entree and Lasanga for main. He enjoyed both. Laid back dining, average pricing, and the service was quick . Bad: And this is why it lost one star in the rating, the entrees and mains were served only about 5 minutes apart, so though our mains were served hot, mine was luke warm by the time i finished the entree. I took 3/4 of my main home and reheated for lunch as i dont like cold fettuccini or wasting food. We had a table for two our table was very cluttered with all 4 dinner plates and drinks. This is where a good Maitre_de would've been invaluable; Quality and timing of service. The service felt efficient and impersonal.

I believe they extended the cafe, the modern side is now for lunch while the pub side potentially for dinner? While i liked the pub side more the venue is still very spacious and bright, with outdoor seating. There's also a pool table. The food was excellent, lots of pizza choices and all with lots of ingredients. The sides are also very big in portion and well flavoured. Have been back several times already!

Had lunch with the family yesterday. Mixed feelings on on the overall experience. My sons pizza was absolutley superb, and highly recomended, and so was the calamari. My surf and turf, even though looks appetising, was really bland, tasteless, and not made as requested. Asked for medium, and got served a well over done, steak. Thr biggest downet was the drinks. On a hot day, you would have expected something cold, but to thr contrary was served warm, gassless drinks, they tasyed afwul, and not even the kids wanted them. Maybe just an off day, but wasnt great.

It is always a guilty pleasure coming to rusty pelican. It is always delicious and we always order to much, perfect for a weekend snack! The service isn’t amazing here but it is a good casual and family restaurant. There is an extensive range of pizzas, enough to satisfy everyone’s taste. All pizzas are available gluten free. There is also a vast range of non-pizza options and a kids menu.

Our usual spot at the pub next door was closed. Driving away we spotted $14.50 Monday burgers here, so swung around, parked up and decided to try it. Nicely decorated sports bar, but best of all, the Moroccan burger is the tastiest I can remember eating in my life. If the rest of the menu shapes up that well, I could be switching. One thing is for sure, I will indeed be back to see. Thanks guys!

Huge portions of food, flavourful. Meat eaters paradise (meat eater was delighted with quantity and taste of ribs), limited options to be adapted for vegans but vegetarians will be fine. Service was basic. Friendly, but inattentive. Entree and mains came at the same time even though they couldn’t fit on the table. Drinks aren’t refilled unless you call someone over. If you want to take leftovers home you are given takeaway containers to fill them yourself (even if one of your party is still eating). Has potential to be so much better if someone skilled in hospitality does some training with staff on customer service.

This is one of the best restaurants in our area. We frequent here often...at least once a week and it is always the best. O highly recommend it for any occasion. All the staff are very friendly and helpful and it makes for a wonderful experience every time 😊

A great vibe and experience, staff were nice and food was good. Where this lacks the 2 stars to be a 5 star review, is because of the procedures in place for staff and customers. Firstly, a customer never should be told they can get water for the table at the front, especially a large table where a tray is needed to bring water to the table. Self service in a cafe is fine, but isn't appropriate in a restaurant environment. Secondly, the cocktails listed on the board should have recipes readily available to the staff. Customers generally won't order something out if the blue, but for one advertised, the poor girl had to spend ages looking for it. Have them organized, and probably not written on a million note pads, get a folder, easy to read, throw a picture of it too, makes it easier for staff to read and learn. Lastly, the board in the sports bar and restaurant ask the customer to mention the cocktail of the week or that days special. No one new it. If you special something like that at the beginning of the night to a table, it might encourage early drink sales.

Delicious food but no non dairy milk options for coffee.

Easy to find on the main road into Matakana. The staff are friendly, attentive and welcoming. The food was great. Fresh, well prepared and a good range of beers (monteith's) available. We were a large group of about 40 people on a Hot Rod run. We rang ahead to let them know we were coming and were looked after superbly. Parking in this busy spot was easy with lots of parks behind the pub.

We had a nice dinner and the kids were happy with their pizzas.

Had a rump steak here that was very delicious. Atmosphere was very lively as well. It was almost too loud to have a conversation, and the food took about 40 minutes to be served, so only giving 4 stars. But overall, fun place and the steak was great.

A nice large place with good food and drink, though a little pricey for a small town. It's usually busy on the weekends but we happened to be there on a weeknight when they have 2 for 1 pizza. Real mozzarella and generous layers of ham etc. Wine from a local vineyard and kids colouring sheets completed our meal!

Service was average, I had to go and get menus for dessert after asking. And then had to find someone to take orders for dessert. But portion sizes are good and the food is tasty.

Food was amazing but service is extremely poor. Walking into the restaurant the staff just looked at us and didn't seem willing to approach us and ask if we needed a table. Waitresses barely said a word and couldn't smile at all. If it wasn't for the good food we probably wouldn't go back.

Went here for our cousins stag do and really enjoyed the food. Highly recommend the water course before going and here's a little quote to make this review long enough: “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” ... Under NEW OWNERSHIP so I will withhold the intensity of my comments until after a 2nd visit. Definitely a little room for some important changes when it comes to a Feature Dish Specialty, but when asked for comments on the meals, I did pass on my observations. Venue is big, bright and breezy, fair amount of carparking at rear, and floodlit at night. Two dining areas, Sports Bar & Main Dining area ( Rusty TUI & Rusty Pelican ). Caters for 💯+ patrons. Menus are comprehensive and balanced. Theme Nights also. Indoor/ Outdoor dining, mens toilets are traditionally pretty poor at high volume times and could do with a freshen up. Two small Pool Tables situated right outside the toilets....nice . Staff are exclusively younger women, service is cordial and prompt. Very busy on Saturdays. **If you are particular about how you like your red meat cooked, make it CLEAR when ordering at the Bar or with a Waiter/Waitress, be warned ! New Owners clearly haven't trained the Wait Staff in when to serve an entre'e and when to bring the mains, everything arrives as quickly as they can carry it. **Update : 6/21= went bk for dinner again, night of the 2nd Fiji Test, place was packed. Ordered 2 dinners & an entree'. The dinners came out 5 mins before the entree'as usual, so nothing has improved.

Very popular with locals, and Aucklanders who have holiday homes, at Matakana, Omaha, and other popular surrounding spots! Great meals and pizzas, very friendly and helpful staff, and I'm a big fan of their "Surf and Turf". Their adjoining bar has pool tables, big TV's for sports coverage, and a social area at the back!

This is really a nice place, went there with friends for my husband's birthday, their portions are very generous and the prices are really good especially for the quality and the amount of food you get. Best pizzas ever......cant fault the service, guality of food is outsatnding. Sweep pizza is #1. Ribs and all other dishes are also brilliant. A family favourite for us all.

It's essentially a pub / bistro which is divided in to those two areas. Although it appears restaurant like the meals are pub meals including pizzas. The portions are quite generous and there is quite a selection of things to choose from the menu. Right by the roundabout at Matakana. Being Summer holidays it's very busy but it's a reasonable size place.

Never fails to disappoint with a varied and well prepared menu, its not often there are about 5 dishes you cant choose for a main as they are all so good. Its consistently good quality food and service - a must to visit if you are in Matakana.

The food is good but the waiting time for your order to arrive is about 40 minutes or more on the several times I've been here. Pretty difficult to get wait staff attention as well. I would have rated them higher if this wasn't the case

Went here with some friends and family on a Monday night for their Mexican buffet. Was the first time I had been in and I was very impressed. Staff were great, food was brilliant and it was cheap too. Its a bit of a drive for me to get their but I'm definitely going to make the effort to go again. In summery it seems like a great small village restaurant.

Food quality was very good. Salmon and salad spot on and similar with the prawns. They were very busy but not much of a wait and service was excellent - attentive and friendly. Not the cheapest but not overpriced either. Recommend.

Been here twice with the family and on both occasions the staff come over after 2 mins and ask if your ready to order, the menu is massive so you end up sending them away a few times. Feels like they want you to order, eat and f off as soon as possible The food was alright but seemed overprice for portion size, especially the $21 for a burger and fries.

Perfect, delicious and just on time. The place is very good, the family and relaxed atmosphere, excellent service, very good food and at a good price. I taked the Rustic Seafood Chowder and dessert the Chocolate Volcano! 😍Recommendable 😊

Fantastic for a hungry day!! The wood fired pizzas are absolutely amazing. We were there on a busy day, so service was a tad slow, but then that is expected during the holiday period. Some pretty good beer on tap as well.

Awesome, real good place to eat n relax

Really nice setting with an open and friendly ambience. Food was very tasty and had generous portions but not quite worth five stars. My pasta was clumped together and under done in some places and the chicken was tough. Despite that I would return again, everything was flavourful and it was a lovely meal out.

We popped in to grab lunch one day while on holiday and discovered their $5 lunches. They were so good we went back another the times in the week. They do $5 lunches on week days, but only a set number of each type so you have to be in quick. Then went there for dinner and experienced great food and friendly service in a warm cosy atmosphere.

Proper pub feel about this place. The restaurant has big open fire in the winter. Good special deals on the food (not during school holidays) such as two for one pizza. Friendly service and very welcoming. Perfectly positioned in the 'boutique' village of Matakana.

Absolute little gem. Had the Sweep pizza. I'm a massive pizza fan and this one was absolutely stunning! Pizza like you used to have it was back REAL toppings with REAL flavour. Had not had a pizza like this for years so was very impressed. Pleasant timber decode and amazing, friendly and attentive staff. Thanks for a wonderful experience. Definitely coming back to this one!

Nice spot in Matakana. Friendly staff. Had the surf and turf. Pretty good portion sizes too. Spent 4 days at the winery setting up for Highlife NYE and this restaurant was our go to for ordering food. Their Pizza options - I recommend the Supreme.

One of the coolest places to eat in Matakana if you're stopping off on the way to a vineyard or three. The pizza is fantastic; we got the Fun Guy and it was jam packed with mushrooms! Not a bad wine list and the other side we got was good too. Oh and they have curly fries which is always a big seller for me. They taste better, don't ask why.

We had a pizza , nachos and wedges to share between all of us. (4pax) portions were large and filled us all. Prices are reasonable, staff friendly. Garlic bread is super garlicky and we loved it, comes with a ramekin of hummus which was a nice touch.

The serving is very interesting ... u have to go at the bar for it. The burgers the are not so good. I eat at the burger boy in Auckland and there the burger is better..In the bathroom the are no paper towels and the toillet paper "device"... was broken...always opens.

Beautiful setting in the restaurant part, pleasantly quiet too. Sports bar/pub at the back, and daytime service. Ultimately best pizza in the region. Takes a lot to get me off my back side and take a hike from Auckland.. just saying :) Highly recommended when tripping in the area.

I don't usually write reviews, however, I felt that after having such a good experience over the weekend that I had to. My cousin and uncle had a joint 21st and 50th and booked out the Rusty Sports Bar. The venue was perfect for the night and accommodated a large number of people, approx 100-150. There was a nice outdoor space out back that was the perfect dance floor for later on in the night, as well as plenty of indoor room. We ordered a range of food including pizzas, nachos, chicken nibbles, calamari and even donuts, all of which were delicious and went down a treat! The bar staff were friendly and very easy to order from. Overall a great night and an amazing venue for such a function.

My favourite place to eat in matakana village. They have a great variety of dishes including vegetarian, gluten free and fresh seafood, as well as a wide selection of pizzas. Portion sizes are generous. Very good selection of drinks as well, including some sweet feijoa wine. Nice atmosphere, plenty of seating indoors, outside, or bar areas.

Food was cold when arrived. Waitresses were not friendly to me or others. The water offered taste and smelt like Rotorua with little brown floaties in it.
