Reviews of The Puhoi Pub Hotel & Stables...Est 1879
C.
Always a pleasure to be at this venue , bikers , travelers , locals and more . With deep historical ties it becomes an absolute adventure walking into the pub . From breakfast to lunch and supper there menu caters for all , make sure you go experience the vibe .
E.
A quaint little village with great spots to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The pub serves a great dish at reasonable prices. Plenty of room to dine indoors or out. The artifacts within the building and its grounds bring both humour and pain to one's mind as this town boasts a history of its settlers struggles and triumphs.
May seem like its a dead village but spend some time here and you'll find you have a great time.
P.
My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights Jan 2022 and had the best time. Staff and new owner were super helpful and friendly. Our room was super clean as were bathrooms and had everything we needed. Can totally recommend staying here to enjoy all the activities Puhoi has to offer like walking tracks, kayaking, visiting Puhoi Cheese and the Sunday market.
I.
Great place to go for some casual beers with good bar food too!
C.
Greeted well. Entered just before it got busy so definitely ordered way ahead of the big groups. Guess what? 1 hour later… food still not served and of course someone forgot to pass our order to the kitchen staff. A bit disappointed. Still waiting for the food to be served. 😔 I wonder how it taste??
d.
Infamous location and historic building. Staff are friendly and helpful. Good range of spirits and beers. Food was alittle disappointing just seems they are trying too hard to cater for everyone. People would expect simple pub grub from this sort of place. The decor is part of the pub history and should be acceptable to the clientele.
D.
A great little place. Very nice and pleasant vibe.
The Worker Burger (picture) is a monster and comes with fries, be aware.
M.
5 generations have been going to this pub. Still great atmosphere and the bar is awesome as always. However the food is now woeful. Pretty much cheap Pam's frozen food. Such a shame and hopefully it will be back to quality pub food soon.
S.
Nice place friendly staff. Lots of things to look at on the walls for sure bet it also gets pretty crazy there if there is a gig on or good weather in the evening. Def busy in a good way the last few times o been there
F.
The Puhoi Pub is always a great place to visit.
The food is great and the atmosphere is really cool what with hotrods and motorcycles in the car park. When the sun is out it's really busy so make sure you get there early enough to order food or get the drinks in while you wait for your meal. Highly recommended.
L.
Such a vibey little pub, with tons of history!! The decor is eye catchy and tells a story. There's a large grassy area in the front. Great for kids. However, it was quite busy the day we went and we ended up waiting 2 hours for our food!! I believe they have more seating area than they can cater for within a reasonable time.
S.
You can't beat the atmosphere at Puhoi pub. However ...The food is average and we waited 30 minutes to get it. If you're after a pint and some friendly banter then this is the place for you. If you're looking for high quality food that arrives quickly then keep driving.
T.
Great place as always 😊 it must have been 12 o'clock in the world some where, but we were there at 11.30am
N.
Fun place. Average pub fare for a good price. Very friendly staff and a quality heritage vibe. Highly recommended.
L.
Good beer. Food is quite low quality (ie cheap ingredients). Fish n chips was only vaguely ok - the fresh beer battered terakhi was actually just Freezer Surprise, & the salad had passed its Best Before date a good few days ago & wasnt really edible. But the beer was good & staff friendly.
J.
A classic small town establishment. Bumped into Patty Gower with some friends from the Naki. Love that chap.
The owner told me to lower my standards a little but I told her I’m only willing to lower my standards when it comes to human rights.
B.
New Management are good, friendly, obliging and coffee is hot. Not the cheapest cakes etc, free muffin with coffee could at times be fresher but worth a visit.
A.
What a pub! Atmosphere, food, the best interior I've EVER seen in a pub. So much character and stories, you could spend a week here and not see everything. And that's just inside the bar! You must come here!
P.
Loved it. An old fashioned pub, great atmosphere. A must to stop into before having to go back to Auckland.
L.
Beautiful homely public house with a good food menu and an incredible biker presence on a good sunny day. Inside the pub will keep your eyes occupied for hours looking at the cool features. You can even leave your mark as I did signing a bank note have having it displayed on their wall , and they are very happy to have you help create history in this magnificent place. Well worth the time to stop. Established in 1879.
S.
Such an interesting area. Historic and Quaint.
G.
Cool place well worth a visit.
S.
Man what a old skoll nice and pleasant pub to go to. had a really good time here. Staff friendly the food's good the drinks good and it's a nice ride to this location
A.
Great place to check out. Great staff. Food was great and hood price. Drinks were great and what a great place to sit in the sun. Nice dog too. Only thing to let it down was the kitchen didn't take pay wave. Bar for drinks did paywave, food didn't.
D.
The legendary and iconic Puhoi Pub! Need I say more. The pub is loaded with tradition and has a character and life of it's own. Definitely one of the places to visit if you are in Auckland. It is just an overall good experience and the food is great.
U.
Why I loved this place? Tucked in a quiet gully among native bush and birds is the quaintest pub preserved. Now frequented by tourists, motorbike clubs and the occasional out-of towner. Lovely seating outside on a sunny day. Full of memorabilia and photos of Puhoi pioneering. Definitely worth a visit!
J.
Staff were friendly. Ordered Steak, fries and salad from the menu and this was a tasty meal. There is a whole lot of knick-knacks all over the walls and looking through these was beautiful. I would have liked serviettes to be provided.
K.
Great pub with an amazing beer garden. I love the deco inside. The food was okay and the service was fast.
You definitely must come here if your in the area
R.
This hotel would have to be one of the finest in New Zealand. Quirky, and full of absolute treasures, they even have an Irish Dog Carrier.. lol... lots to see and a very pleasant place to sit, listen to great music, and see lots of awe inspiring people. 10 stars deserved.
A must visit, true treasure of NZ..
♡♡♡
J.
A little gem for sure! A good big breakfast and such a lovely atmosphere. Friendly and welcoming service. Spotless, nice and clean. Love this place! Will visit on a regular basis now that we've discovered it. Definitely recommend!!
J.
Sunny terrace, friendly staff and owner (I guess he is). Fresh fish for crunchy fish and chips. Good coffee, not over extracted not too weak, just what you are expecting (with a plus actually) from a village pub and hotel.
S.
Always fun to go visit. Lovely food and they now even have their own beer! Was a little sad to see the wedges have changed haha 😄 but will be a continuous customer always
P.
Nice for a day trip up the river to the pub. A bit pricey for food, but nice food. Staff are lovely
G.
We shared a meal under the grapevine area at the pub. Beautiful place for our mum / nana she would have love it as we all did. Helpful staff great atmosphere.
Z.
As a Czech I had to love this place! You can get very well served Pilsner Urquell here. But the most precious is the atmosphere, you just feel as local here. It's a little bit of home. Just look on the walls because they tell stories
J.
Great historic location, good food, amazingly entertaining walls in the rooms.
G.
Very much happening place, lots of customers enjoying food and drinks even during the day time. Staff are friendly and food is great.
Great location :)
M.
This is an iconic North Auckland pub. It has history ozzing out if it walls. Always busy, good hearty well priced food. You have to go to know!
N.
Still a great place to stop for food, live music and beer. Loads of families there yesterday enjoying the sunshine! The manager Amigo is a legend!!
M.
This is such a good place to go when doing the kayak trip up and down the river from Wenderholm. Good food and great beer.
a.
Nice local lager and good vibes
J.
Great destination for food and drinks. Historic pub with huge beer garden. Very popular on weekends.
R.
Great day at the woodchopping and a lovely pub. Well worth stopping in any time. Amazing memorabilia all over the walls and the food was great as well
M.
How can you NOT like the Puhoi pub, it's a great place for a beer and food over a weekend, knic knac shop across the drive as well.
Well recommended
M.
A terric place for lunch or an evening meal - excellent pub food, very friendly staff and locals, and fascinating authentic historic pub - we loved it and will certainly visit again.
R.
Great place. Owner serves beer at a great price too. Long may he reign!!! If you are a tourist do not! miss it..
J.
Awesome food and vibe great to go and relax and have fun
J.
Bonkers historic Kiwi pub with nothing to lose.
It's well worth the detour!
We recommend the mussel fritters.
Just pull the bras to get out.
F.
Great place to share a pub lunch with friends. Good seafood choices and reasonably priced. Excellent indoor & outdoor seating. Interesting memorabilia. A place to go in summer & winter
D.
Iconic pub. Still a bit rough around the edges but that adds to the charm. Nice beer, lots to see both inside and outside the pub. Perfect on a warm sunny day.
s.
Always a good place to end up after a ride, good meals and a coldie. I frequent quite often
I.
Lovely little gem hidden away in the rural area.. felt like home in SA
P.
Awesome place to stop for lunch. Good beer, good food & atmosphere.
C.
Always enjoy having a beer or three there. Love the old pubs.....
M.
Great place for a beer in the garden bar great pizza. Will definitely be back.
K.
A great spot, good atmosphere, good bistro meals. Nothing fancy but priced accordingly.
K.
Very beautiful and historic place. Enjoying excellent lunch. Reasonable pricing. Parking available though can get quite busy during summer. Beautiful outdoor seating though the constant smokers are a turnoff.
T.
Paddled up stream for a pint and some chips. Friendly staff and a great beer garden.
J.
Excellent and professional servos.
Fresh cold beer served in a chilled glass with grate company.
J.
Cool little pub with great outdoor areas. Busy, great food and things to look at on walls
L.
Puhoi is a village established by Bohemian settlers (Czech).
I thought this pub would carry a bit more of Czech heritage. You can see Czech flags on the walls, hockey jerseys.. Etc. The food menu has nothing to do with Czech Republic, which is a bit sad.
At least bottled Pilsner Urquell and really nice garden. It is a shame, as it would be really nice touch to the place to offer some Czech dishes on the menu ( deep fried cheese, beef tartar, marinated Brie.. Etc)
G.
Popped in for a quick dinner with the family - meal ready in minutes and a generous pour of red wine (they gave me the bottle with almost another glass in it).
I had fish n chips and the girls shared beef nachos.
The pub is kid friendly and very welcoming.
A.
Always heard aboout the place and had an afternoon to treat my niece so we went there. Decent pub food (the squid was very yummy) and service.
a.
Just popped in for a quiet 1 bottle and used the facilities on way northbound
d.
Loved this place.
Awesome pub with variety of drinks, food and well presented interior.
Nice outdoor dining too.
It’s legendary pub in NZ.
R.
Absolute must! The food is amazing, and I love the Puhoi Beer. It has a great outdoor seating area. This place has character!
m.
Great pub.
Nice spot for a cider or a beer...or just chill out 😜
V.
Awesome place plus the atmosphere is amazing, very friendly staff, me and the wife rode our bikes and is a great place to meet like minded bike enthusiasts
S.
Lovely place, great friendly staff, good selection of drinks and food.Only 3 stars as we had to wait painfully long.Painfully long for a basket of chips only
S.
Great atmosphere, good tab beers
L.
We called in here as a number of people our age have recommended it. As members of the “Boomer” generation, we are always looking for interesting places slightly off the beaten track. We were not disappointed! The service from the ladies in the kitchen could not be faulted, and the $10 oysters and chips were to die for. While waiting for our order we browsed the souvenirs, books, and artisanal chutneys that were available for purchase. I was even able to find the Life of Christ in Cats tea towel, which I had been searching for for some time! Our only “gripes” are that the location seems to attract a lot of road workmen with dirty boots (yuk!), and that we were not able to purchase a wine or beer to enjoy with our oysters and chips, as the premises are not licensed.
B.
Plenty of big tables set outside. Picturesque venue, great staff. Shall make this a regular stop off.
J.
greeted with a request to see Vaccine Pass👍 then told by unmasked staff member that we didn't need to worry about masks! 😷
k.
Great people running the place. Amazing beers and the best location in summer days.
c.
Very busy. New owners have really improved the place. Plenty of people eating.
K.
Great food and music and beer. What else can I say. Excellent afternoon
M.
Great place to visit if you are in the area. Good beer and food.
G.
Cool pub.
Cool live music.
Nice beers
Great relaxed atmosphere
S.
Lovely atmosphere wonderful service. Food was great. Cannot say a bad word. Highly recommend.
D.
Great food for price make sure you are hungry
P.
Very cool old style pub, really good food
j.
Amazing breakfast in the country not far to travel lovely food can also buy cheese there as well.
S.
Awesome Pub 🍻 Very friendly and good selection of beers.
J.
I can't speak highly enough of this place. Looking for an authentic pub in New Zealand. Puhoi came up. We rang the night before to make sure that they had room to park our campervan. The gentlemen on the phone assured, YES. On our arrival we saw hot rods, vintage cars and a few nice Motorcycles around the pub. We were welcomed as soon as we walked in, and when they found out that we rang the day before we were treated even better. The atmosphere was nice, friendly and Cosy. We both had the steak meal which was very good value rib fillet that you could easily cut with a butter knife. Amego and Kelly were very attentive all night even though it was quite busy. I would recommend anybody looking for a quirky little pub in a beautiful small town to drop by and say hello travelled This was by far a standout for us in the north Island.
R.
Great space to meet family for a lovely leisurely lunch 😋
J.
Great to visit original Bohemian/Czechoslovak settlement. I have pinned on the wall my squash player registration card from Prague :) Good stop for pub food and beer when on the way to Auckland!
M.
The best pub in New Zealand in lovely spot.
N.
Puhoi is a beautiful little village with a lot of history. A cafe and a nice old pub for a quick refreshment. Photo of the Library.
M.
Great atmosphere and decorations on the walls. One of a few pubs in New Zealand to offer genuine Czech Pilsner. Worth a visit (and a drink) if you are in the area.
J.
On Sunday I came for lunch with a group of older women, three of whom had serious mobility issues. You kindly seated us inside and provided table service. Our waitperson was just lovely, nothing was too much trouble for her. Thank you so much.
E.
Funnily enough it was fairly quiet today, midweek. The beer and food was great and the drive out of Auckland was very pleasant.
T.
Lovely food there. Friendly staff
T.
Nice venue for business drinks and mingling with local usual customers. Food is mint. Place is nice and has old victorian and moderate crossover. Long history. Must visit for all who drive through Puhoi. Close is nice walk track up the hill. Perfect stop before cheese factory.
J.
The Puhoi is a traditional kiwi pub with great food, service and outdoor seating for those summer days. With a revamped menu and good priced beverages whether they be imported or local there is always something to quench the thirst with out breaking the wallet. Staff look after you well and always happy to answer any questions or spin a yarn to the slightly intoxicated prior to closing up. Would recommend great family give and play area for the children
J.
Great place to retreat to in the afternoon. Can get busy in the weekends. Thats not a bad thing as it tends to be a good natured crowd there most times. Excellent selection beers and cider at the tap that befit the feel of the place. As in old and rustic.
The bar food and meals are very very good and tasty. Good selection of seafood at a reasonable price.
Its a genuinely old worldly feel-good sort of a place with lots of memorabilia tacked on to the walls and ceiling from local bush logging days. Its even safe to bring the kids. Can even stay the night should you feel like.
K.
I visited on the day after New Year's holiday.. Food was good pub food and people were friendly. The place itself is historical with plenty to look at and investigate inside the old pub. Would recommend the 1km journey off the main highway for an interesting pitstop for a beer and a good hearty meal.
I.
All kinds of patrons arrive at the Pohoi Pub, where the friendly staff and publican help them enjoy their stay and the uniqueness of the interior, the history or Puhoi and the lovely food!
W.
Service history atmosphere location.....2nd to none
S.
Great place to get a beer. Full of history.
J.
An institution in Puhoi. Always good hearty pub fare at affordable prices. Recommend the mulled wine served during the cooler days. If you sit outside, you'd be surrounded by the friendly resident sparrows😊
W.
Lovely place for a drink with interesting history to read about and random paraphernalia on the walls. Friendly staff and entertainment from a chap on the piano! The prices are quite expensive (about $13 for a pint of beer and $5 for a soft drink) but worth having just one for the atmosphere and history.
R.
Historic and mythic pub , I'm a traveler and I love found this place . Really cheap and good beer 😍🍺🍻
I.
Fantastic Place. History. Atmosphere and Cold Beer!
D.
Such a lovely pub reaks in local history. GREAT food and just looking at the menu is making me hungry again. All the things hanging from the ceiling and walls are great with LOCAL HISTORY Just keep things as they are and don't be pushed around by people that don't agree with LOCAL HISTORY.
Keep up the good work and may 2021 be a great YEAR for you all yours. DAUD
B.
Great place. Awesome beer and meal prices.
L.
Nice outdoor vibe on a sunny day. Sadly the food looks better on the menu than it does on the plate. A bit of a let down when your paying Auckland central prices for food. That comes out looking and tasting average. Not what we expected.
H.
Not to be missed if you are in puhoi village .Friendly staff,Friendly guests all around .on a sunny day be ready to treat your eyes to some awesome bikes and vintage cars
T.
Great venue, food was yum - buffalo wings are hot. Service, excellent!!!!
Definately make a night of it and stay in one of their rooms
P.
I have been a customer of the Puhoi Pub for quite a very years. (Not a regular, but often). I enjoy my visits very much. There is an excellent selection of beers, spirits and wines. The Bistro menu is awesome, I recommend the fresh fish and chips and salad, the Seafood Chowder and Garlic Bread are mouth watering, too! Ohhh yeah!! Yummy!!
The staff are really welcoming and friendly with a wicked sense of humour, super helpful as well. A truly relaxing atmosphere, to boot.
You never know who is going to turn up at the Puhoi Pub on the weekend.
Could be a well known world class musician, NZ and visitors. Motorcycle enthusiasts turn up with an amazing array of glistening machines. The Classic Car groups visit on a regular basis as well, so there's always something going on.
It's so relaxing to sit in the outdoor area, enjoy a drink and meal and observe, - and take it all in.
Puhoi Pub, you're AWESOME!! Cheers!
C.
Great place. Friendly staff. Interesting people, always someone to have a yarn too. Awesome on a sunny day sit out in the garden bar. Food is good value very home made classic kiwi style. Sort of pub that would be great as a local. This should be on everyone's bucket list of places to try.
R.
Its either your kind of place or not. I love it, the memorabilia, quirkiness, cheap beer, food not too bad either. Waited 35min for a burger today...that wasn't cool, but gave me more time for another beer. I'm a biker so enjoy the vibe there.
B.
We do not go back to this great pub enough, but when passing always go in for a beer and feed. Good range of beers including low alcohol. The food is always good and many meals on the menu to choose from. Catch the weather right and the outside area is perfect.
D.
Great place to have a beer after a ride
R.
My dad, sister and myself went there yesterday to find out what all the hype on TV about one of Bullocks was about. We hadn't been there in over 20 years and the place still has that down to earth atmosphere, lively locals and the new owner was such a beautiful woman to talk too. The staff behind the counter were friendly and professional, they all knew that we wernt locals, but that didnt stop them from being friendly. We ordered the platter with chicken nibbles, chips, tiny sausages and squid rings with a bowl of tartare sauce, even though I personally dont like squid rings, but those rings were morish, I just wanted a plate full of them. I would definitely recommend this place and am looking forward to going back there again. That used to be our watering hole back in the late 80's early 90's. Thank you team Puhoi, our experience there yesterday was a magical and memorable one. Onwards and upwards.
K.
Average food, they need to reduce the menu, price of beers outrageous
J.
Great spot 35klms north of Auckland, beers are perfect, fun place... go there!!@@
P.
The atmosphere is good and the people are good, but the food is not. The food is way overpriced. We had fish, chips and salad. It was more chips with a little bit of fish and salad. Literally a quarter of a small tomato and about one lettuce leaf torn up with about a tablespoon of grated carrot and two very small pieces of fish. The fish was fresh but it was so small that by the time the batter was cooked the fish was overcooked so it was a bit chewy and it was tasteless. The nachos were a big tasteless and not great either. Terrible value. The general store down the road is a much better prospect with seafood and chips meals offered for 10 dollars and they also have fresh slices, tarts and very yummy looking fresh pastries which looked homemade. Would definitely go there instead next time.
H.
A great piece of history there.
Lots of historical photos and tools.
Some people may find some of the pieces offensive but those people just need to get over it. REALLY ! read the information that is with these pieces then you will understand what it is all about.
Get over it people, life is to short to bicker. History is just history and we will continue to learn from history as we go through our existence on this planet.
V.
A must stop in whether traveling north or south , get a beer and battered oysters., always fun to watch the locals and the leather clad Bikers, a carpark full of classic cars, picturesque Puhoi never fails to deliver.
I.
Great food. Great atmosphere.
P.
Great little pub
Just called in on our journey up to the Bay of Islands.
Great welcome, fantastic service and tasty food.
M.
Excellent place to go. Excellent Food and bar . Staff are brilliant
D.
A good way to relax after our Kayak down the river.
S.
Awesome pub, food live entertainment.
W.
This old historic pub is an icon, a must visit. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, great drink selection, and an open fire to keep you warm on a cold winter's day. Especially if you're with the love of your life...!
C.
Lovely small pub. Friendly staff and good food. We enjoyed the fish and chips. Outside garden area for children to play and plenty of seating outside, although we went in the spring. Can imagine it getting busy during the summer.
M.
Really lovely staff, behind the bar and food section... Danielle took the photo for me.
S.
Awesome old historic pub! Has a great range of memorabilia hanging from the walls which gives it great character! Staff and publican are very friendly! Perfect place to stop in on your way north or if just out for a weekend stroll. Family friendly! Food is of great quality! Would highly recommend making the stop in!
P.
Lunch ordered was ok. Chips over cooked. Steak great but mushrooms cold. Pleasant place to visit
T.
Brings back the good old days memories hasn't changed abit from 20 years ago
N.
Great atmosphere, great food, great service.
A.
Worth a visit as it is a historical meeting place, can't remember exactly but about 150 yrs old and a blast from the past. Tried the seafood chowder - quite good but not exceptionally so. Mussel fritters were good. Place gets busy on weekends.Close to the Cheese factory and another Cafe close by a well as a local museum. Probably nearest Country pub to Auckland. Easy run up the motorway.
N.
Good place.good food .good beer
S.
Nice too see the pub has not changed. My reason for the 4 Stars was our food was late. We had to ask twice where it was because people who had ordered after us were getting these.
M.
Pub with loads of history and artefacts. Lovely fire roaring and friendly locals. Bar staff helpful and friendly also. Great pub meal.
D.
A great day ! Sun , good music , drinks & food all day !Plenty of parking ! A terrific Atmosphere! ( Even a Market 9am = 1pm).You must visit ONCE to go INSIDE & SEE 😲 ??????? Fantastic Labour weekend!!🤗🙂🌞🌤🎸🎺🎷🥁🎹
A.
Good traditional pub.Puhoi pilzner it's a good beer for hot day.
J.
Incredible food, great pricing and excellent service. The atmosphere here is great, family and couple friendly. If you like seeing historic buildings this village and pub is a must!
S.
Lovely atmosphere in historic old world New Zealand. The interior of the pub is a tapestry of the regions history and visitors. Good food and service.
M.
Great pub, in fact probably the best in NZ, Awesome hospitality. All sorts of cool history and memorabilia throughout. A absolute must visit! Thanks Puhoi Pub.
G.
Taking pub decor to the next level!!!
The day we stopped in the pub was rammed full so we did not stay long.
Lots to look at & has a large patio area for out door enjoyment.
Clean bathrooms & no problem parking.
Will be back for beer o’clock next year (2019) for sure.
M.
This historic pub is an absolute must visit! Enjoyed tap cider and beer while taking in the Puhoi views. Don't forget to check out all the memorabilia inside. Great service too!
B.
This place leaves restaurants for dead as far as waiting time is concerned. 9 people and we were all served within 20 minutes of sitting down. Food was great, fresh, tasty and not to expensive. Would like to have seen kids size pizzas available as our 8yr old couldn't eat all of his at a sitting. Well done. On the next visit I hope to have time to survey the ceilings and other rooms.
D.
Food was sub-standard tonight. Firstly pizzas have stopped but still on the menu boo hoo I know but then I ordered wedges with sour cream and bacon bits and not 1 piece of bacon. I said to the lady on the till that there didn't seem to be any bacon on the wedges and she then says yeah we ran out 2 days ago. Would have been nice to know before we ordered? Then the steak and onion burger had stringy fat through it and gristle 🤢 pick up your game guys!!! I want to enjoy the local!!!
P.
The Puhoi pub is a short trip off the main SH1. It is a historic place, and interesting just to look around inside.
Check out their currency collection pinned all over the walls from visitors, or the bra collection hanging on the back of the door (also from visitors).
You don't come to the Puhoi pub for a fine dining experience. You come for the charm. Nothing wrong with the food mind you.
There is lots of outdoor seating, and this is where people tend to hang out the most.
G.
Our visit was a real experience. Totally neighbor focused We turned up the day all the bikers were there. The place was humming with people. Great food genuine friendly people Historical surroundings We enjoyed it
H.
Extremely entertaining hanging out at the pub. We met so many people and had such a laugh. The accommodation is everything I expected and more. If u like original genuine honest place to stay and let your hair down this is it. The staff are brilliant warm and friendly. You really feel welcomed.
J.
Amazing place, great food, met the best people here after Kontiki fishing, thank you so much for your hospitality.you guys rock 🤘😎🥂

Amazing old fashioned pub. A true experience. And some seriously cool bikes and old cars turn up. It is a destination worth the drive
H.
If you want a quick day trip out of auckland head to the puhoi pub for a beer and a bite. It's iconic and timeless. And we sre pretty sure the walls are being held up with the trinkets on display! Its a top 10 must see site !!
J.
I just saw the news onTVNZ one News. It was a story about the Pub and how 150 years on it left a poor African girl crying due to items inside the Bar.
I am a decendant of John Wenzel Bayer.
This is my great granfather and with his hands built that place.
To hear people are offended about New Zealand History for here dating backto1886. This has made me very upset. His picture is on the wall in there sitting on the front steps on a break from the building. LEAVE OUR PUB ALONE 😢 My family heritage is in that town, the church and pub. Most Fantastic tranquill place to stop and is full of History 😊
W.
Love the location. It was pumping with heaps of people. Sadly my meal was vey bland. I had scallops and chips and the scallops were tiny and were frozen as fresh ones would've had orange row and these had a tiny row but was brown. Too much batter and not enough scallop. Other than that we had a lovely relaxing 2 hours.
K.
Great experience. Awesome food.
C.
I loved it there was alot of activity going they had a market day happening, the Puhoi Pub was open serving beautiful food, the atmosphere was electric, there were vintage cars, harley bikes and others, so much better at the pub instead over the road very friendly sellers and the community families.💯💯💯
P.
Great pub for a quick beer
E.
Great selection of beers and always best to go on a Sunday. You'll see all sorts of characters such as bikers and people of all walks of life. The pilsner they have is traditional Czech Urquell Pilsner which is lovely.
The food is probably the thing they could do better. I know its pub food but this could be heartier with more flavour.
G.
Awesome place, steeped in history and visited by families, friends, bikers, car enthusiasts - everyone. Great relaxed atmosphere and a good range of drinks (alcoholic & soft). Large garden/play area for kids, dog-friendly, and there are various events held there: live music, fun social stuff...I want to live there now. ;)
(Edited: removed incorrect year of establishment)
S.
Great place - been there many many times. With regard to the item on the news: sometimes history isn't pretty, that doesn't mean it should be removed. Keep up the awesome work. 😁
A.
Everytime I visit I enjoy the atmosphere. Remains a unique place to visit. Can spend ages reading the money towns inside. There are some great people watching opportunities and good selection of drinks. Food is basic pub grub. Like that there are more covered outdoor seating options. Would prefer more outdoor smokefree seating. Very off putting too be surrounded by smokers whilst having a meal on a stunning hot day.
W.
Very unique old time pub. Friendly staff and amazing atmosphere inside. We visited from America and I've never seen a pub like this one. If you're into pubs, definitely give this one a go if you're in the area.
C.
Tidy little rooms for travellers/trampers. Reasonable rates. A little dated, but comfortable.
The building itself is very nice. Bar serves typical range of pub meals and drinks at typical pub prices.
G.
Love this place, good food and lots of seating great place to ride to as a group.
J.
Filled with friendly locals, food and beersies. Money is dripping from the place and literally growing out the walls. The piano man plays like there is no tomorrow while the locals drink to forget their weeks.
K.
Amazing pup with an amazing atmosphere! Staff was so friendly and welcoming. Rooms are rustic, simple and it feels like sleeping a night at your grandparents. Definitely recommend going there
M.
Great iconic pub
Steeped in history which is evident by the museum like content of memorabilia
Good choice of food and beverages
Great secluded country location an easy drive from Auckland
T.
Always love a visit here, such a beautiful old pub with lovely friendly staff & great service. If you're ever passing, be sure to stop in for a pint or a bite
A.
Super interesting decor. Big hearty meals and good prices. HUGE fish n chips and an awesome mixed grill. If you're nearby - drop in. If you're not nearby, drive out and have a meal here.
k.
This place has a good vibe. We went on a weekend during Xmas holidays and it was packed. Food was yummy but it took long to come hence one star less.
C.
This old pub right at the Puhoi valley is most fancy pub I have been to. Have been there twice and wouldn't mind to go back there again and again. Best to drink beer and watch the rugby match 🍻
N.
Going for a cruise to the Puhoi Pub is a bit of a tradition for a lot of Aucklanders and this is a good old fashioned homestead Hotel, a bit of what time forgot. Its a good cruise out of town. Awsome food at great prices with fun cheeky staff. Stay and sit in the sun for a while, share a platter and drink with your mates, or stay the night in the 100 year old Hotel for a romantic weekend away. This place has something for everyone young or old.
D.
A legendary place! It's a must to stop here when travelling past. Great food and beverages all at great prices. Friendly staff and efficient service. Browse the walls for a bit of New Zealand history.
H.
A beautiful small country town straight out of a picture book.
A.
This place is out the gate, drank here a few times, stayed the night once, if you want somewhere with character, great outdoor drinking area and real atmosphere this is it, it is in the middle if nowhere so if you feel like having too many to drive book a room upstairs, it's definitely something different.
J.
This is a very charming place. Very big tables outside to catch up with friends. And very singular decoration inside.
Do not miss this pub if you are around.
S.
Paddle to the Puhoi Pub - awesome adventure with @SupExperienceClub & @girlsgetouttherenz
P.
Visited with friends and one group member in a wheelchair, good access
Country ambience
Puhoi Pilsener really good, Monteiths Pale Ale even better
J.
Great place to grab a beer.
C.
Just a great old pub,be hard to find another like it in NZ. History on very wall in bar,has obviously been visited and enjoyed by many thousands of people over time and a lot of them left their mark one way or another
B.
Always good fun, and worth a visit if you're in the area. Puhoi itself is a fascinating little place, and we usually end up at this historical and fascinating pub with it's checkered and colourful past. Sit outside and watch the people, or go inside and look around. You won't be disappointed.
J.
Very cool old pub with so much on the walls to see, good food and drinks
s.
Always a fun time catching up with a few hard case locals. If you are wanting a good feed of pub grub washed down with a pint or two you are in luck this is where you will get it, Oh yeah if you plan traveling on through the scenic route via Ahuroa valley take extra care as it's a very long narrow winding gravel road not recommend for novice or nervous drivers😬👎
c.
Wat can I say that people don't already about Puhoi Pub and the village, still very popular for as long as can remember, food is fantastic, service is as good as any 5 or 4 star resort, alot of history inside the pub itself, need to check out the Puhoi Cheese Factory as well. A very nice place to take friends, family and guests from overseas as well.
D.
It was the first time here, just fantastic steeped in history. Icons from the legendary past and old bank notes aligned the walls. On a good day Classic cars and motor bikes.
Certainly a place to visit just for the experience.
V.
What can we say - excellent every time; excellent management (Malo Amego), excellent service, excellent atmosphere, excellent establishment & the memorabilia 👍❤ 👏 We'll always drop in for a visit w Amego, a drink & Kai - Love it, we highly recommend!
G.
Pub was great, a piece of history. Can't say much for the service tho. First lady behind the bar was a real card, her replacement was as sour as can be. Local regular patrons were hostile to say the least.
S.
Iconic destination to finish a girls road trip away for the weekend. Must visit the cheese shop up the road too.
L.
Just awesome! Great food and atmosphere
T.
Still a superb spot for lunch and good atmosphere.
It’s a juxtaposition between local blokes and a destination pub for Aucklanders with flash bikes and yet it works in harmony and makes both happy.
Great place for a family meal.
L.
The venue has such character. Food is perfectly adequate. I really enjoy looking at all the memorabilia in the pub.
r.
Can never fault a cold beverage or 10 at the puhoi. A true kiwi pub, with plenty of locals regularly partaking in the act. Can get a little busy during Friday afternoon with every man and his dog dropping in on the way back to Auckland, but a great place all around !
T.
Awesome pub! Great atmosphere and very amazing and historical, as there aren't very many old pubs in New Zealand left, and surely isn't no other pub like 'The Puhoi Pub'! Very friendly staff. Worth a visit!
M.
Historic and legendary. A slice of yesteryear.
D.
Nice location but the food was pretty average. I had the Welsh rarebit, which came out as essentially a dipping sauce for these OK pieces of bread. The coffee was average too.
M.
Friendly pub and great staff
E.
Great place to stop for a cold one and if your a bit peckish a meal. The pub has a long history and such great character.
R.
Great fish and chips. We sat on the picnic tables outside and had them with a glass of wine on a sunny day. We actually paddled there from Wenderholm on the incoming tide, stopped here for an excellent lunch, and paddled back on the ebbing tide. Marvelous day.
C.
Asked for vegan food options and was offered lasagne or calamari. Would rate for quality of service, beer and their standup routine.
T.
I love this place!! Such a great vibe and atmosphere. Always have a great time when I am there. The food is always great too and all of the staff are very lovely too. Just love it!
J.
Good place to visit on a sunny summers day.
A beer outside with some perfectly cooked calamari and a cool atmosphere.
Why have we never been here before today?
We will definitely be coming back.
N.
Closed when I last passed by. Happy to see nothing has changed inside and outside is looking a bit better & tidier these days. Happy to report it's as good as ever 😁.
s.
Haven't been here in years. Was wonderful to see a range of people young and old. Excellent, friendly service as well
A.
Interesting place, great little village. Nice food at General store and ok at the pub if there's no crowds. Lots of bikes on the weekend if you like potato harvesters..
K.
Great place to watch all the bikers arrive, friendly atmosphere and mix of people, the pub has history and character and you need buy the Puhoi Pub T shirt. This is my NZ local on my annual visit from Scotland. Unique X
S.
Friendly hospitality...pizza's were genourosly loaded with cheese & a good variety of beers to chill 😎
C.
If you get the chance to bring back the chicken nuggets please do! They were so good.
S.
Nice environment and lovely food♥️
V.
I live close by, worked close by and often pop in for a drink. Have been through the very unique hotel....its definitely old school by NZ standards. A lot of early Bohemian Dalmatian and Maori culture in this area. Great stop for an evening pub grub meal and a few drinks. Plenty of parking.
Best feature...the interesting support handle attached to the wall in the wc, usually found in wch toilets (wch facilities not too flash here I'm afraid). Figured it was for drunk chicks to pull themselves up..... and the number of bras that adorn the pub door.... so un PC that its refreshing!
Did I mention it's pretty friendly there too?
M.
The staff are very helpful and friendly, beautiful place for a quick drink before heading up north, love love love
S.
Always good food and a great atmosphere
C.
Awesome pub with so much history on their walls. Great atmosphere and staff
C.
Lovely spot and nice ride out to here (through the toll road or Orewa). Decent pub food and drinks. Quite an iconic stop off for a rest on a ride.
M.
Rustic pub with pleanty of character left by past and present visitors and locals. Wherever you look there is always something new and interesting to find.
Staff are laid back and always happy to serve you a beer.
k.
Nice place Good for with friends or family have a cup of coffee together.
L.
Iconic pub, a must visit!
T.
Authentic old historic pub by the river. Hosts a unique casual friendly atmosphere, young and old. 1/2hr from CBD. Food ia very good fish, chips hamburgers, nachos etc. cooked just like it was home made.
A.
Awesome old pub. First visit for my wife but not for me. Will definitely come again
P.
Nice pub to see for the pictures. Everyone let a souvenir.
But 45 min to wait to have 2 sandwich is a bit long, especially when you just expect to do a shot break on the road.
A.
Oysters and chips what more is there too say.. absolutely delicious. My wife has tried most of the local wines they have for sale there and now it is a frequent stop for us as we head north for a vacation
L.
Great setting. Just stopped for a beer so not sure what food available
C.
Awesome country spot of Historic Puhoi Pub.
J.
Very nice. The barmaid was nice and upbeat. It was a lovely place to be sitting in the sun with a pint 🍺 and listening to the chilled out music that wafted outside 😊
K.
Standard pub food fare - a lot of deep fried options. The interior of the pub/hotel is worth a wander through. Good outdoor seating for sunny days.
M.
I got the salsa chips as a recommendation from the guy working at the restaurant counter. They were interesting and delicious. The bartender was also nice and had a good sense of humor.
S.
Just as the sign there says "If the food isn't up to your standards, lower your standards". A good place for a cold beer and some hot chips if you're passing through Puhoi but you'd not go there specially for the fine dining... Haha.
M.
Great place for a meal and drinks
P.
Nice bar to visit in the summer but limited seating in side for winter visits.
D.
Very casual Kiwi country pub from way back. It can fill up with tourists during the day but in the evening it reverts to being closer to its roots. I first went here fourty something years ago and while it is more popular now it has also managed to retain enough of its original culture to remain one of the must visit pubs around Auckland.
R.
As of writing this (July 2020) the Puhoi is just the same as it had slways been. Same atmosphere, same menu. Bar service a little slow but Im sure they will get on top of that .
D.
The place was really great and they had really good burgers and chips, the salt and pepper squid could be a bit bigger but it tasted really good, lovely people, great selection, definitely want to go again
d.
Great old school kiwi pub with loads of character and a pleasant hotel attached. If you are heading north out if auckland I recommend you swing by. Nice people too
K.
This place is sweet, nice stop for a beer, great location and great characters...
T.
Classic kiwi country pub. Draws a mixed crowd on the weekends...families to motorcycle groups. I've always found this pub friendly and a pleasant place to linger over a pint and pub grub.
B.
The service is good and it's a nice place to hang either with some friends or with the family.
T.
Always a great place to visit 😎
J.
The Puhoi Pub is a great family place to visit. Plenty of space for kids to play. A large outdoor area & alot of motorbike riders go there. So, in any weekend you will be able to see loads of Harleys amd other cool bikes turn up. Good pub food amd a nice cool drink too of course.
G.
Great warm atmosphere and lovely Kimberley mulled wine too! 🍷
R.
Great to see a century old hotel in its character showing its old nastalgia . Lots of photos to look at on the walls
Good value
B.
Friendly people, wonderful place.
A.
Amazing Loaded Potato Wedges, yum!
Tavern has so much history to it, surreal time shift feeling 🙃
N.
Love the Puhoi Pub. Just went there the other day. So relaxing, sitting trying their house beer under the grape vines!
C.
Authentic, proper pub! Stunning setting, full with locals. Great vibe & a very welcoming bar tender 👍🏼⭐
P.
Always good, and close to home :-)
P.
A historic village pub, with a good range of pub grub and selection of beers, Inc a few GF food options. Great place to watch bikers parking up after a Sunday afternoon ride.
G.
Travel back time at this eccentric establishment, good beer and fantastic atmosphere, cheers
L.
Very busy place. Great for families and big groups
J.
Great place to enjoy lunch and a cple of beers on a sunny sunday afternoon. The atmosphere brilliant
M.
Great old pub. Good atmosphere and food. Must go back.
P.
Stopped in for lunch after doing the Puhoi track. Great location, reasonable prices, friendly staff, and probably one of the best burgers ive ever had!
M.
It was truly an old pub. Very cozy. The Cafe was empty when we got there after a long hike but it still felt like a pub from Ireland.
S.
So much to look at, lady at bar was very nice friendly, lady in kitchen not so much. Normal pub food. Raining but we still enjoyed being there, worth a visit.
r.
Primo spot! Friendly locals too. Definitely worth a visit. Special mention to the small trading store...we really enjoyed browsing the varied stock.
r.
150 years old with heaps of relics. Great place for a rest or drink or browse. All set in a lovely rustic village. Check out the library, you will be amazed
D.
Great atmosphere, heapz of tables wif shade, food n drinks very good.
S.
Very nice place. Great people. Great meals

K.
Had the yummiest tai salad
A.
Great historic Kiwi pub. Imagine all the people over the ages that have tipped a glass here, amazing! Fun location for a cold beer and people watching, especially on weekends.
J.
Always a good feed and a beer to finish a Sunday ride
M.
Nice location especially when the sun shining. Only stopped for a drink. Would be even better with a bigger selection of craft beers on tap.
D.
An absolute must. If you're travelling in NZ make sure the Puhoi is on your list
C.
Had an awesome time bar staff are amazing and helpful will be heading back again, big ups to the managers and the owners.
S.
an iconic gem on the outskirts of Tamaki Makarau. Good vibes, good food and a good local brew. highly recommend
T.
Always stop here on the way up north. Good food, cold beer!
R.
The atmosphere, wow! Such a great feeling place, awesome staff, great sense of humour. Food was on par with the price, worth it for that alone
J.
Always a great place to go for the day. Great for food, drink and people watching. Lots of characters🚵. Cheese factory down the road if you want a sample to take home.
j.
Updated but still a piece of history!! Was a shame about the police presence 😕 they are payed a good salary to intimidate law abiding citizens and let criminals run free...
A.
Expensive beer, not much of a smile with it..but great setting & yummy grapes on vine.
W.
Great place to have a scrumptious meal, staff are lovely.
W.
Gorgeous place, brunch was excellent, coffee was hot as asked for. Our thanks to chef Gary
C.
Lovely old country pub with lots of character, friendly and helpful staff, and a large garden with long tables for eating and drinking. Only a short visit but would love to go back.
J.
Great venue for casual drinks. Real "Old Time Pub" and surrounds. Great outside setting on a warm Auckland day.
W.
Lovely old pub. Great setting. Tasty food. Toilets are a bit drab and smelly
D.
Stopped in for brunch after a gig in Wellsford. Fabulous day, fabulous service and dining and a fabulous piano that a certain man couldn't resist! Thanks Puhoi - we'll be back!
J.
A very interesting hotel and pub, with a great deal of character and history. We could have easily spent more time in the pub. Very nice and helpful staff.
J.
No fancy stuff, no mucking around, it is what it is - a classic kiwi pub with good beer and great food. Always easy to find a table. Never lets me down.
I.
Great tourist attraction.
T.
Tucked away off the beaten track, this is a nice little country pub. The food is great and the locals are real down to earth good people.
H.
Friendly relaxed historic pub. Good beer, fantastic fries. Perfect place to stop after a day at the local beach's.
A.
Different! Very historical and not the cleanest, but it is an old place. Has a good beer garden.
R.
Great vibes, friendly staff, nice meal. Lots of people just chilling out
D.
.Well what a great place to go on Sunday afternoon and have a couple of beers and a bar meal and just enjoy the afternoon inside watching the Bathurst car race on the big tv .Plus talk to some of the local people who come to have a beer and meet up with Friends and enjoy the afternoon as well .great place will be back again .
M.
This is the coolest pub around. Dress code is not an issue.
E.
Love this out of the way pub. Service, food and amenities very good, down to earth . Can't fault their ways. Returning.
D.
A++ vibe! Cheap, ok pub grub. Always a mean selection of motorcycles out front. Great place to stop in on the way home from up north 😎
S.
Great food, great staff! Awesome place to just look round and read everything!! All you need to know!
D.
Hasn't changed at all since I visited and stayed in the hotel almost 43 years ago (which is good). It would be a travesty if a new owner tried to gentrify it.
C.
Great atmosphere, only thing that let the place down in my opinion is we paid $40 for a cheese plater that's was worth $10
G.
Great place amazing view. Friendly staff. But 34 dolleroz for 2 pints of Heineken and 2 cokes is a bit steep.
P.
It's such a cool place. The atmosphere is fantastic and a great to have a drink after kayaking:)
N.
One of my favorite places to have a wine and good feed take all the kids atmosphere so cool
M.
Atmosphere is great! Staff are really friendly. Food was delicious. Beer was cheap. What else could I ask for?
B.
Enjoyed the atmosphere, as always, came away feeling nourished, nice burger.
D.
Great atmosphere on a quiet Friday afternoon. Nice fish n chips 🍟 from friendly people. Great puhoi lager by the jug.
V.
Meh was average... definitely over rated. Food wasn't that good at all. Atmosphere was nice with good heritage antiques around the place to look at
J.
Super quick and delicious pub food. Quirky atmosphere, well worth the trip.
H.
Good place to visit and good food
P.
Perfect place for anyone , the bar staff are top notch , there's a big lawn for the kids to play around on with ample games for them, the food is good but it could do with a upgrade, overall a sweet spot for a weekend drive to soak up the good old times 🤙
E.
We were here as a team. We had nachos and burgers. Nachos were okay but nurture was raw , ny friend asked for the 2nd one but she again hit a raw one.
D.
Outa the way and friendly people awesome place
L.
Great place to meet people and have a good, local Craft beer but food not that good and expensive.
