Classic Kiwi pub. No fuss, friendly service. Chips tasted like chips and beer tasted like beer and was nice and cold.
Some local characters had some banter amongst themselves which you can choose to get in on or not.
Nice large garden and picnic area.
Great old school, nostalgic experience.

WOW an awesome, relaxing, spacious & beautiful place to stay! We caravaned here for 3 nights @ a great price of $10 per adult per night. Really lovely, friendly Team here & the food OMG... Highly recommend to ALL - would love to come back sooner rather than later 😁😎🤩
S.
Plenty of room for camper vans and caravans also have units. The food is amazing with friendly staff. Will definitely go back.
R.
Absolutely loved the Castlepoint lighthouse and beach! The walk towards the lighthouse is spectacular with all angles of views so breathtaking. Would definitely do this again!
The hotel made delicious warm chocolate fudge. Highly recommend spot!

A classic old country pub. Look elseware if you you want 5 star treatment. Some rooms have onsuites others not. Food is ok. Great locals and a great garden bar.
R.
Had a great meal and the staff let us have a free shower to tidy up before our meal. The motor camp was wanting to charge us $20 for a shower. Thumbs up for the pub. Well done.
K.
A country hotel, busy bar good outdoor space. Stayed in camp area out the back it was good, bathroom facilities need an upgrade though
C.
Very nice food, service a little slow but we were in a group of 12 and it was generally busy. Courtesy bus from the camp ground was really helpful.

I stayed one night the room was excellent clean and comfortable...great food and staff were wonderful
G.
Meals were good. However, two of our group got served their meals reasonably quickly and by the time the rest of us got ours, the others were well finished. We had a very long wait.
J.
Very nice meal of fish & chips. Salad not so great
E.
Good rural pub! Signs says county dinning and that's exactly what we got :)
L.

Great little country pub, with friendly staff. The basic pub menu is available and reasonably priced.

Really enjoyed the food here... had the lamb shank which was amazing! All the other food coming looked good as well. The place could do with a bit of clean but hey, its a country pub serving good food drink, what else could you want?
P.
3 of us had the steak. One medium one medium rare and one rare. All arrived together and all 3 were perfect. Very enjoyable meal.
R.
Place is magic, humble little country hotel with very neat staff all-round.
The family Bach was everything we needed for our small family.
5 minutes from the beach is exactly what you need to wind down after a long day of adventures.
Absolute wee gem..

Really loved the friendly staff and atmosphere. The food was excellent and all including the room was reasonably priced. Will definitely recommend to anyone going to Castle point. Thank you, from Mike and Elaine from Levin

The food and hospitality here is good. We had a very large family group so I got to try a bit of everything. The prices were reasonable, the portions were all large and everything was tasty except the smoked chicken salad which tasted awful. Not sure if the salad or chicken was a bit off or perhaps it was just terrible dressing but even I couldn't stomach it (and I'm not a fussy eater at all). Fortunately the portions in general were large so there was plenty to share around to make up for an uneaten meal. But we otherwise enjoyed it so we'll be back - hopefully the salad is fixed by then.

Lovely place to get food and drink.
We popped in on a Saturday got a family meal with our two young children.
Menu options for kids and adults were listed on a blackboard as you walked in, so ordering at the bar was quick and easy.
The staff were all friendly, and helpful. They genuinely seemed happy to assist - with a number of people there being first timers in holiday, this really makes all the difference.
A large group booking turned up while we were there, and the staff dealt with it without any noticeable delay in service.
The food was lovely and the portions were a good size.
The dining area was well set out, and they have high chairs for younger children, there is also a playground area for kids to run around in.
I’d be happy to go back there for a meal the next time we’re in the area.
K.
Exactly what you want from a country pub - locals hanging out having a beer and watching some sport, lots of interesting stuff on the walls, friendly staff and huge meals that were very reasonably priced. Will go again when we are in the area next
G.

Took a group from The Union Hotel Napier to the Beach races an stayed here. The hospitality of Ray and the team was great. Such a cool pub and awesome meals.
P.
The place was buzzing, heaps of people, warm fire, pub dog, just like a good pub should be. The accommodation was what you expect at a pub, would definitely go back :)
M.
Stayed with my girlfriend here for a night in one of their motel-style cabin rooms. We paid 65NZD for a room with fridge and a doubel plus single bed. The communal kitchen was one one side, the communal bathroom on the other.
Beside us there has only been two other couples been staying at the time so it was all nice and quiet. But even for more people the backyard of the hotel is huge. Enough space for everyone!
The stuff was friendly and easy going. The equipment of the rooms was aged, but fitted perfectly in this dreamy, laid back atmosphere. Liked it!
Very interesting feeling when entered the pub and reception in one at the first point cause all of those old, local men, probably the farmer living around the place. This is a true un touristy place, which you find very hard these days in new zealand...
I.
Very welcoming warn and friendly.. thanks Ray and staff best Lamb Shank , Seafood Chowder and Roast Lamb dinner.
Z.
Rustic, vintage, whatever you want to call it, it feels like New Zealand/Aotearoa.
With a quality pub menu, that is seriously affordable, and the on-site pub dog/vacuum cleaner (only steak though, not fries lol) it's well worth the 5 min drive to Castlepoint beach & lighthouse.
Friendly and welcoming staff, locals, and campers = real New Zealand/Aotearoa bliss
I.
Only had the one drink .. the host, bar person was great .. no problems .. would certainly stop for refreshments when we travel through again .. keep up the greagt work
C.
Nice place. Friendly staff. Great food👍

Stayed on Boxing day as we travelled across the country, had the Groper room with the cool bi-fold windows overlooking the lovely garden towards the sea. A bit confusing that it's called both the Castlepoint Hotel and the Whakataki hotel (and aka the ex-Marine hotel) but not to worry, all the very best to Lindsey & Jen as they've just taken over the running of the great place from his parents.
A.
