J.Amazing intimate atmosphere, attentive and highly skilled staff and the best Old Cuban I have ever had. This is a must visit if you enjoy a cocktail. Will definitely be back

Why?
It does two things.
1 it gets you trying something different
2 you learn something new together
There is an atmosphere of chic as you slink into deep leather couches.
The dim lighting may make reading the menu of liquid treasures hard to start with but make sure you ask for some accompanied foods.
Toasties were a great way to help soak up the good vibes and settle the stomach.
Smaller than the other cocktail bars in the 04, but the service we got here was Fantastic.
Knowledgeable on the drinks and willing to spend time talking and caring about our night.
Will be back for sure.
J.Never knew this place was here, tucked away upstairs on tory street. Cocktail bar was super cosy and had a great vibe. Staff are super well presented and attentive. The cocktail menu is a great start but staff are also willing to make anything you'd like. Great experience, can't recommend this place enough.

H.Had to be experienced to be appreciated. Drink, relax, absorb the decadent vibe without the panic off they outside world. Ideal for a small group or couples to have a quality experience together. Themed drinks were a classy addition to it's traditional embrace.
A.Greeted by a swanky bar man at the door, welcomed in like it was as good as turning up to a friends place for a casual drink. Fine cocktails, with superb service throughout. Made for a topnotch experience. Dark exquisite tasteful decor, made for quite the atmosphere. Highly recommend, you pay for what you get but you won't be disappointed.

A.Fantastic old-feel speak-easy atmosphere, complete with Gramophone and green-felted card tables. Cocktails are the specialty, and they're delicious. Be aware they make their own infusions/extractions, so if you're a solid Cointreau and Bailey's fan – it's maybe not for you, but if you enjoy experimentation it is well worth it for one of their custom-made cocktails!
C.Fabulous! Wish I could give more than 5 stars. So unique and sophisticated I think I have found my new favorite bar. The bartenders were so friendly and made such brilliant recommendations they clearly know their drinks.

D.This place is something special. Small, hard-to-find (try approaching from the north). Attentive but discrete service. Friendly too. Low lighting, not noisy. Tables & couches available. Not suitable for large (more than about 6 people) groups, but is space at the bar. Best of all, their cocktails are to die for. It's up narrow stairs, not wheelchair friendly.
M.This place is exceptional. Great ambiance and friendly staff. The bartenders are amazing at what they do here. They cater for heaps of cocktails that are not on the menu. I would definitely go back when in Wellington.
B.What an interesting spot. The decor and overall theme of the bar is great, the cocktails are an acquired taste though so definitely more for someone with some cocktail experience. Great little joint though and will definitely be spreading the word! They even have branded pencils!!

E.Philly Phish Punsch, a clarified milk punch that's aged 1-2 months, is excellent. Nice "speakeasy" vibe and decor -- crystal drink containers, green card tables, gramaphone, etc.

B.Great little speakeasy, but service was mediocre and going off menu beyond the admittedly super interesting house cocktails seemed to be a lot of effort. While they do use local and kiwi ingredients and garnishes, their menu would definitely benefit from a greater effort in including NZ distilled spirits and liqueurs and offering a bit of a range.
A.Awesome intimate atmosphere with superb service. The bar is tucked away and might be a little hard to find if you don’t know about it but it was worth the search. Nice casual vibe inside with a great cocktail selection. Had the ‘Birth of Venus’ which was wonderfully refreshing.

We had a great bartender called Jack, he definitely knew all his cocktails, sat down with our group and made a cocktail to suit each of our tastes, he made it a great experience. All the other staff were friendly as well, and the cocktails were all amazing.

L.The best speakeasy I have ever been to (and as a former barman I am quite critical). The sheer attention to detail when making cocktails (including shaving pith off an orange peel to avoid altering the taste, and choosing the best glass shape/type for each cocktail) is phenomenal and testament to the care taken to do things not just well, but great. Green card lamps, a comfy bar and soft seats and candlelight complete this little slice of cocktail heaven. Perfection.
A small bar though, so don't expect to just walk in at peak hour.

The place itself is quite small but usually quite packed, we were originally sitting in the corner as a group of four, everything was going fine but we were eventually moved onto another table to make way for a bigger party. It's no big deal really, but when we did move, it just sort of killed the whole vibe.
The other tables were incredibly small so you felt like you were just shoulder to shoulder with everyone around you, therefore, it gets stupidly stuffy/hot and almost unbearably uncomfortable.
It's also very expensive here (which is what you'd expect from a classy bar but still worth noting).
N.Truly craft cocktail masters. I enjoyed two nights here out of my 3 in Wellingon. Unpretentious and interested in making a cocktail that is perfect for you. Dark and cozy ambiance. Come early and have a conversation with Patrick.
R.Awesome cocktails, made with flair. Not exactly cheap, but there is quite a portion of spirits in the drinks, so you get what you pay for. Open till late, and they will even make you a toasted sandwich from the 'secret' menu...

S.There isn't much to say other than I LOVE IT !!! Open fire .. Tick ... Tailor made cocktails .. Tick !! How often is it that you can go out and get a tailor made cocktail to how you feeling .. Hardly ever is the answer. It has a speakeasy feel so if your out and feeling a little mystery and intrigue had down and prepare to have your tastebuds clean off !
P.Best bar I've ever been to! Well trained staff who know about all the finite details they add to the drinks and amazing atmosphere. This has become a regular for me to show people that aren't from Wellington
F.This is how my night at the Hawthorn Lounge went: Irish Whisky in a cosy corner with quiet conversation, then a Gunpowder Rum cocktail at the bar, then a mystery shot concocted by the bartender, a few Epic Pale Ales, and at about 2am (after a few more cocktails) the old-skool hip-hop came on and the party really got started. Awesome little place, with a touch of old-world charm and a top-class barman. Hard to find but highly recommended!
G.Out with hubby and my cousin. Stopped in for a drink or two before going to dinner. A lovely cosy bar with good service and good wine selection though the glass price was quite steep compared with our Taranaki prices.
P.Total surprise walking up a random dark staircase to be met by exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable staff who are happy to cook up a special concoction to your liking. Otherwise try their unique mixes like chocolate and blue cheese cocktail.
M.A very pleasant surprise at the end of an evening out, slow jazz at a level that allowed hushed conversation, great knowledgeable staff and a serious selection of tipples from beer to cask strength Islay malts via cocktails and wine. I'd go back again... and again...
J.The Hawthorn lounge is a unique place. Tucked away up a unsuspecting flight of stairs you are taken into another world as you step into a dimly lit room covered in red velvet curtains and decorated with old school class.
The staff are the perfect balance of knowledgable, helpful, and friendly and you immediately feel like they are your friend.
Every cocktail and drink ive had at the Hawthorn Lounge has been original, tasty and unique. I have yet to find one I dont like.
There is often live music which is very good, and there are chess, cards and other games handy to play. Its not uncommon to come in and see multiple tables playing various games while chatting and having a cocktail.
A must if you are in Wellington and you're after a classy evening drink in a fine

T.A REAL cocktail bar, like a private club, discrete entrance, quiet, sophisticated, sublime cocktails, relaxed and unhurried. Attentive service. It just needs Nina Simone at a pieno or Juli London on top of the pieno.
