Reviews of The Fringe Bar
a.
Mama browns place good food birthday person gets free meal and drink lovely staff
M.
Great fun nights .. we went to stand up comedy night and it was so much fun
A.
Good on the management supporting stand up ,"raw meat" comedy night. Went last night. Every monday 8pm for a good couple of hours. Get yourself a drink and support the comedians 8 or 9 in an evening each having a slot. 8.50 entry on line or ten bucks at the door. Where can you get entertainment for that price,
L.
Nice little karaoke bar, was actually just here for one of the shows hosted here & it was great. Limited beers on tap but good choices so I wouldn't really change anything.
V.
Fringe Bar is pretty cool however this review is skewed by the fact that I was visiting someone who lives in the apartments upstairs and Google can't tell the difference...
E.
This bar is a lovely spot to slip away for a mid-week drink after work or to blast out some vintage Karaoke tunes on a Friday night. Good prices on the beer and great quality on the cocktails. Can't go wrong popping in here for a night!
k.
A good little venue bar, we went to a comedy night the bar service was good the place was tidy and the staff were pleasant. The comedy was a mixed bag of starters but they all gave it their best shot remembering this I'll be going again to hopefully see them again honing their craft a little bit further, it can be easy in front of friends bloody hard in front of a room of strangers for most.
A.
This is comfortable, friendly, and ideal for the diverse, creative and intimate performances that we're blessed with in Wellington.
J.
#COVIDSUX went to a comedy show, good prep for L2 except we were left at our table drink less while others were seated after us and served before us. We weren't served any drinks (table service only) until after the first half. Stand is funnier after a few colds.
T.
Awesome ladies ...Cocktails 👍 Chatrusse cocktail a fav
r.
I had far too much fun here. It was fantastic. I can't comment on prices of drinks because I don't remember but looking back at my bank statement I know I spent alot ha! Totally worth it though.
J.
ok, bar staff are a bit snooby the pokie room is pretty good
K.
Great atmosphere great bar
C.
What a terrific night out with the family! Nice venue with a great atmosphere - perfect for entertainment. The comedy kept me laughing all night!! 4 stars as we thought the food was a bit pricey (but very tasty) for the portions. That won't stop us from going back!
A.
This was thus far my first visit to the Fringe, and it was to celebrate a friends bday by watching Hugo Grrr's "little boys room" show. I thought the show was pretty good, for me the highlight was the MC B-)
Commenting on the venue as such would be too soon, solely based on what I have experienced. The staff were friendly enough, beverages overpriced as is to be expected in this part of town.
The venue was really not that well suited for the event, though. While there is a small stage people not in the VIP section (i.e. the first 3 rows close to the stage) didn't get much of a view of the performances. Particularly parts that were executed not standing up were completely invisible to me.
G.
Very friendly place. Good coffe. Sometimes tango dancing in its biggest saloon.
K.
Since it moved to Allen Street last year this place has really taken off with a wider range of entertainment including Pokies. Karaoke normally has some good singers and not long to wait for songs and some of the open mic music nights surprise with the quality of talent. Mostly mature patronage and range of drinks is quite good. Make quite good coffee and toasted sandwiches too. Recommend for the event variety. Always something interesting happening compared to some of the places nearby which are just noisy drinking holes.
D.
First time for me going to a comedy club. It was very entertaining.
A.
Staff are friendly and nice, every thursday there's lunch-time tango in its saloon. The floor is not too bad; a little bit sticky, but not too bad for dancing in a bar. Their food was not too bad, and so is their drinks.
A.
It's not the worst place to visit, beers a little dare but the Karaoke does make it mildly tolerably.
Worth a visit if ever in Wellyz and you want to get away from the Krazyness of Courtney Place.
R.
I saw a woman carry a plate of hot chips into the bathroom to share with her friends. It has Karaoke. The barman made me B52 shots.
Staff were nice and the people who go seem cool but it just didn't wow me.
It's got a good vibe but honestly kinda average.
T.
Great venue for smaller productions. Very informal. Reasonable bar and tidy toilets
A.
A really nice cosy bar, with super friendly staff, a good vibe, and great drinks. I was here for a drag show- it was amazing!
A.
This bar is so great. My dream of becoming a world renowned singer has grown much closer since I can get the hours of practice at this place. The crowd is always gentle and supportive, also the honeys are sweet. Do one song or TEN. It doesn't matter when everyone is always singing along regardless of whether they are doing the song or not. 10/10, 5 stars, 100%, this is where you should be, right now, It's the tits, seriously.
S.
The floor is always clean, and shoes do not stick to the floor.
Always they have variety of home made dishes available @ a reasonable cost and the land lady Sue makes the best coffees with its coffee creama on top, it reminds me of home, Greek/Armenian coffee.
R.
The best, most wonderful venue, welcoming staff, good food, a cheeky beverage. What's not to love?
K.
Great little bar to catch up with friends, great gigs and artists play, friendly service
B.
Great shows - saw Rocky Horror drag - had an awesome night & loved the show. Drinks standard price for Wellington city - about $10 for vodka & orange. They do a passionfruit mojito for $15 - will try this next time. Bar has pool table - cues are behind the bar. Also has gaming room (pokies). Only improvement would be have more bar staff on on really busy nights. Thanks for a great night!
A.
Went to a comedy show there tonight and it was sooo funny. It’s similar to last time —- glitzy, comfy and makes me giggle.
R.
Great fun. Karaoke was cool. Covid 19 protocols followed to the letter.
A hidden treasure in our cool city.
C.
Andy, Andy, Andy, I asked you: Are you the barman?
You said: Yes!
Then I asked you: What's the best cocktail you can make?
You showed me the cocktails menu and said: All of them are good!
So I said: They might all be good, but I'm asking you for YOUR best cocktail!
You grabbed Joel, the Wood, and disappeared from my sight. I was puzzled.
Me to Joel: Tell me, what's the best cocktail you can make.
Joel: The Espresso Martini!
The Espresso Martini by Joel Wood was outstanding! And within 5 minutes, it was gone!
Me: What's your other best cocktail?
Joel: There's an old one that I used to make.
Me: I'll have it please.
The Menagerie by The Wood was even better! And within 10 minutes, 'twas gone!
Me: What's your other best cocktail?
Joel: Whiskey Sour.
Me: I don't like whiskey sour.
Joel: You like your cocktails sweet?
Me: Not always, but I don't like them sour.
Joel: OK then, I'll make you a Whiskey Sour that you'll love.
Me: Well, OK then, I guess.
Whiskey Sour by The Wood was not sour at all. 'Twas slightly sweet. Just the way I like it. A 5 out of 5!
This time, I sipped and savoured the Whiskey Sour, under the watchful eye of The Wood.
Moments later, I found where Andy escaped to >>> the DJ booth. He was running the karaoke for the eager young things!
The thought crossed my mind for a fleeting second: How will these young, wild, pissed kids receive an old fart like me singing old love songs. But because 'twas just for a fleeting second, I ignored it! I thought, what the heck, I'll sing whatever I want! To hell with the kids! I could be older than their Dads, so they should just bear it!
I picked my song >>> Quando cubed, or Quando to the power of three to the numerically challenged. And that's exactly how I wrote it on the list of songs and aspiring (frustrated?) singers. Two and half songs later (Still by The Commodores, It's Now or Never by Elivis, and one-half of Delilah by Tom Jones) and it was 4:30am, closing time.
The venue? Commodious and well-lit. You don't need a torch to read the songs' list.
The atmosphere? Electric - must be the young, wild, pissed, loud kids. I caught a falling, crashing bloke before he collapsed to the floor.
The staff? Attentive, interested, interesting, enthusiastic, gorgeous!
The facilities? Top class and all in good working condition!
If I'm going to own and operate a karaoke bar, it would be exactly like the Fringe Bar.
I am coming back tonight to watch The Blueprint Live! do a rock n roll covers extravaganza from 8 'til 10pm. At 10:30, the fun begins again. This time with my new friends - J, Z, and, hopefully, A!
I will give A anything and everything just to make him sing tonight. Will I succeed? Who knows?
The Fringe Bar, you are karaoke bar Numero Uno in New Zealand, and, perhaps, the whole of Australia, if not the world. My rating? Five out of five.
R.
The coolest little bar in Wellington! I've been to some fantastic shows here and have always had a great time. Excellent service too.
J.
Fun Bar. Came for a perv! at my friend Anna performing Stand-Up comedy NAKED. Anya named her pet cow on my farm after her sister back home in Russia. Alex isn't Anya's first cow. Anya became an outcast in her village for selling her mother's cow to buy grease to put on her face to attract Western men. Only I could save her.
P.
Best place in Wellington to professional stand-up comedy.
L.
Good poetry, good company.
A wonderful evening's entertainment.
J.
Bouncers have killed the vibe everytime I've gone in. But the bar itself is great!
S.
best staff in town, always has the coolest, queer friendly shows on ❤ such a comfortable and accepting place to be
M.
Improv troupe on stage when we visited which made for a fun evening. Bar staff were helpful and friendly. Worth checking what events are on and when as otherwise it's 'just a bar'.
J.
Great place for a drink and snacks. The service is really good. They have a variety of shows on during the week and karaoke every night.
C.
Fantastic little bar and a great venue for comedy. Had a decent range of beer some which I haven't found elsewhere around Wellington

P.

C.
Awesome bar in the hub of Courtney Place, good wine, good menu and great place for local talent - plus friendly staff - fab to have this kind of venue in Wellington. A must visit.
J.
Epic place for live shows. Everything from comedy to drag back to live music and then some poetry thrown in. Honestly I don't know another venue which has such a constant variety of craziness on its stage. Then after the show is finished, there's pokies, pool and karaoke. A real home for performers.
D.
Free condoms in the bathroom! Crazy beer and a good place for comedy shows. Grimy, old and a special Wellington venue, love it
V.

K.
Great comedy (at times) and open mic nights for those brave enough to give it a go.
M.
Wednesday night saw 6 aspiring comedy acts ..raw talent. Worth the 10$ cover charge.
F.
Great spot. Went for the comedy, stayed for a few drinks. Great staff.
D.
No corporate polish here, down to earth and unpretentious. They've always got a good events calendar with standup, poets, bands and song.
W.
Nice bar that is pretty quiet during the day and fairly hectic at night. Good selection of beer on tap.
T.
The highlight of Fringe is the events there. It's an organisers dream to work with Joel and his team.
Drinks and food are ok, but the shows are the highlight.
T.
