Reviews of Thistle Inn
S.
Went with our grandchildren for dinner tonight. Lots of friendly people there .... both customers and staff.
The meals were huge and very tasty. Had the wine pairing with all our meals ....very good.
J.
It's our favourite bar in Wellington - lovely old pub that's been tastefully renovated. Great food and superb bar staff. Always have 2 or 3 interesting guest beers on tap. Very imaginative events programme - music, wine & beer tastings etc
A.
Nice place. $$$. Not much choice of mains though... all of us ended up with classic fish and chips because of it.... but it seems to have a very nice vibe.
K.
Good bar, I would always stop in here if I was of to football game all a cricket game at the stadium. They have a great selection of beers and whiskey, good bar food. The staff are super friendly awesome service. I also back in the day when they had poker there on a Saturday would play there. But honestly people it’s really nice bar. Let’s be honest it’s had amazing work done on it. That’s if you used to goto this bar 15 years a go. It was old and run down .
B.
We had our daughter's 21st birthday party here. The venue was perfect. The food was great and the staff were friendly and helpful. Everyone had a fantastic time!
V.
Awesome atmosphere, friendly service and delicious food. The Inn is pretty large, but with various rooms/spaces, it still feels like an intimate place to sit down with friends. It was busy while we had dinner, but due to the layout it was still possible to hold a conversation without having to yell. Highly recommend!

We chose Thistle Inn for our staff Christmas function this year as my daughter had her wedding there early in the year and we were very impressed with the venue and catering for that function.
From the onset Thistle were excellent :-). They were prompt and friendly with their response for the booking request, kept in contact throughout during lockdown, were welcoming and friendly when we arrived, the service was superb, our meals were well timed, dietary needs were well catered for, our water glasses filled without asking and the sparkling water with lemon and cucumber was a very nice touch. Our waitress was a lovely girl who clearly explained the specials, asked if we could hear her through her mask. All our staff were rapt with the meals and venue.
We had our dinner in the private dining room off the bar and the size of the venue for our group of ten, two with hearing difficulties, was just right. We were able to hear each other and the wait staff.
Keep doing what you're doing Thistle Inn, we will be thoroughly recommending you :-)
S.
Great experience with WVOP BBQ lunch. Love the G&T looking carbonated water on arrival.
J.
From my same day phone booking to the moment I walked out the door....I was nothing but impressed with everything at Thistle Inn. The atmosphere was humming with live music and lively chatter when we arrived. The staff, again, from phone booking to paying the bill, were friendly, accommodating and I'm sure - smiling behind their masks. The food was beautifully presented and delicious AND I didn't have to re mortgage the house. All in all - For us, The Thistle was the perfect place to catch up with good friends!
A.
We had a private event in the main bar area at the thistle inn a week ago and it was fantastic! Staff went out of their way to help us out before and during the event (especially Emma who helped us with the organisation the most and is super lovely). Everything was set up and managed smoothly, and the set menu was delicious and really reasonably priced. The room itself is also very beautiful with a cosy and historic vibe and there were very nice Christmas decorations set up which added to the ambience. I highly recommend it for a private event or for a casual meal 👍🏻
l.
I booked the Georges room for a full-day meeting for the team, and i got really prompt reply and a quick and easy process while booking. The vaccine pass requirement did provide a peace of mind during Covid. Team members all agreed great set-up of the room in conference style, great food and convenient location.
C.
We did the AirBnb experience here and it was absolutely incredible! We had Tom guiding us through the night and he was incredibly wonderful. Not only did he take the time to connect with us, but also genuinely showed the passion he had for the Thistle Inn. The head chef's menu was outstanding, letting us try dishes that we might never have had ordered before. That SHORT RIB! Buttery, melt-in-your-mouth, blow-your-mind bite of the main dish was out of this world. Tom explained the local sourcing of the ingredients and the wines, which was great to hear. Loved learning about the history of the Thistle Inn over a fantastic meal.
E.
The food was exquisite! Perfect portion and delicious. Service was awesome with friendly, helpful and smiley staff. Great ambiance too!
B.
They provided our protests #EndMandates with nice music and overlooked out camp called Kererū Pā located next to the Wellington Bus Depot, I would definitely do business with them once the Mandates are dropped all together, continue to provide awesome music for our wider Whānau and you will have more than enough business in the coming Future!!!!!
J.
Had a 21st here on Saturday it was an excellent environment & the staff were amazing! Flinn was especially great, we received friendly service from the start & he went above and beyond to ensure everyone had a good night! big appreciation to the staff members they looked after me extremely well!!!
P.
Top quality fish and chips.😋
But a pity that there was no steak to choose on their menu!! 😢
Great service by the waiting staff!! 😁
C.
Great service & food. Really appreciated the complimentary sparkling water with lemon & cucumber.
D.
A place that probably has potential of at least 4/5.
Okay food, nice place. I'd definitely give it shot when the Thistle Inn introduces their full menu. The options of the reduced COVID 19 menu was slightly disappointing.
W.
Fantastic service. High quality food beautifully presented. Lovely dining area. Great value
S.
It started with an easy booking online! I had a great burger, delivered by friendly, attentive staff. All in all a great experience in a very nice and tidy restaurant
A.
Went here for a wedding reception and it was great. Nice staff, great food, and clean toilets! Great bit of Wellington history.
T.
Lovely old Inn. Friendly service. Excellent variety of Plates of Food.
Unfortunately, like all Pubs/ lnns, lively sound environment.
G.
There’s a lot to like about The Thistle. Beer (craft). Food. Ambiance. Close to the Stadium. Close to the Railway Station. If you’re down this end of town or heading to a concert or game I’d recommend it.
A.
Very friendly up market pub. We received a big friendly welcome and offered a table to watch the rugby. The game was close by so the pub was empty at the time. My wife had some yummy pate and cauliflower cheese. While I enjoyed a fabulous burger and chips. We were looked after with table service. The furnishings were very NZ with lovely polished timber floors and wooden tables and a large tv screen. A fabulous spot and will return again next time in Wellington. Recommended.
E.
... Mmmm! The taste was delicious 😋 Ok, you can take a look at my photos ... When you began to eat you ... should forget what is “around” (maybe you don’t have the better table) except your partner, sure :) We were in a couple and we decided to came back as soon as possible ... to try other plates ... :)
By the way, the service was impeccable!
T.
Nice wee bar. Stopped in for a couple of beers. Service was good and it has a nice bar feel.
l.
Havnt been here for years. Nice to go there again. Really friendly nice staff. 👍
P.
Dropped in for a late lunch and we'll impressed. This old Inn has been cleaned up but still kept parts of its history. A glass panel in the floor let's you look into the cellar. A good selection of on tap beers and the food was enjoyed.
F.
We visited for a work function and both the food and service were excellent.
D.
Nice wee pub with a heap of history. Friendly staff and good range of drinks.
C.
What an unexpected delight to find this place. While extremely busy the staff were very efficient, warm and welcoming.
The food we had was wonderful.
The place had a great atmosphere, was really alive and buzzing. When we left a staff member kindly ordered us a taxi to the airport which we were most grateful for. Thanks for a fab end to our trip guys. Christina and Glen
A.
Food was great and service was fantastic.
K.
Good food and decent beer selection. Acceptable prices noting the location. Can get busy and noisy with the Friday post work crowd or post match
R.
The food was fantastic. Our menu had a choice of three options, and each sounded yummy.
Service was also very good.
Only down side for our large group was that it was a bit loud that made it harder to hear those on your table.
D.
Excellent service and great beer and food.
S.
Always lovely staff and quality drinks and nibbles as well as lovely surroundings.
C.
Great food. Lovely atmosphere.
G.
Great food and atmosphere.
S.
Very delicious food and absolutely great service.
A.
We held our wedding reception in the main bar. Emma was very helpful in the lead-up with sorting out which food to have. We had a modest budget for our wedding, mostly we wanted good food and drink and a space to enjoy ourselves with family and friends. And this place provided great food and service with a very cool setting (it's got character, being the oldest pub in town). Recommend as a function venue.

Great food, great ambience, great service. Great value for money. Was there for the live music. Really enjoyed the evening with friends.

Great atmosphere and friendly staff.

Great food and friendly service
B.
Nicely renovated and quite sharp. Haven't been in here for about 20 years!
Very impressed

Great place, food and atmosphere, will go again.

Beautiful building and ambiance, food was delicious, great service too.

Excellent food. Had the paua fritter s and snapper. Ended with pear desert. Will come again
C.
Delicious Fish and chips meal, yummy crispy batter and fish cooked to perfection... wasnt impressedby the coffee though, waaay too strong and a little too sweet... (perhaps I wasnt clear enough with what I asked for)
T.
Great place, food and atmosphere, will go again.
A.
Uninspected restaurant in pub area with nice food.
V.
It looks old, it is old with recorded history for you to see. We were with a tour group so maybe you would not have staff give details as easily that we got them. It's a pub with a bit more. Pleased to have gone but would not seek it out as not a pub person. Pleasant staff.
W.
Great service, good social distancing and amazing pate!

Excellent food. Enjoyed the live music. Small number of staff meant some delays. Good beverage selection

Wow, what an experience in Wellington's oldest pub! Lovely staff but wow the food is just devine. A place you can't walk past! Even just pop in for a drink with friends 🙂
l.
Food / drink a little at the pricey end but otherwise a pleasant spot. For non locals near parliament this is a much better drinking hole than Backbenches IMHO.
Consider booking a table in advance.
V.
Cheese n crackers, battered and fried seafood platters were a great variety and very tasty, the only downside was the lack in quantity information provided for the gallon of pilsner I'd ordered, other than that, a great experience :)
R.
Met up here for a meal with my daughter and my old school friend whilst visiting Wellington last weekend. What a brilliant choice! The ambience was elegant, really appreciated the starched linen tablecloth and napkins, the beautiful silver cutlery, the regular top-ups of sparkling water. Meals and wines were lovely, service was excellent. Bonus was the complementary dessert wine that set off our dessert beautifully. It all combined to make the entire evening very special. Thanks Thistle
B.
They did a great job organising and running a surprise birthday party. I had booked the George's room for 25 guests and it had all we required. It was also quite private and worked well for our night. Thanks team
P.
Supurb food, good beer range. Wonderfully restored historic bar. Staff are really helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly.
I.
Delicious, had the lamb, it was succulent and the kumara crisps added a great texture.
L.
We went for a group function. The food was great , everyone enjoyed their meals, and the staff were very friendly and accommodating
A.
Nice food (the burger is exquisite, the chocolate caramel tart really tasty), great beer (Black Dog APA really good), lovely recommendations and Matt (the lad serving us) was really lovely and fun! Thank you for the great service, great food and lovely evening! Live band quite nice as well. We loved this oldest Inn of the town!
J.
Good atmosphere and service. Well set up for a group of 14 like ours that evening.
M.
Good crowd for a drink and good pub food. Hutt Valley Stompers live band an added bonus. Good to do on a Friday evening.
P.
The beer is now excellent after a slow few years. Food amazing.
G.
Great food and friendly service
F.
Awesome food in a cosy atmosphere :)
D.
Nice dinning room. Excellent service. Great to have a waiter (Seymour) that knows how to serve.
P.
What a blast.... good craft beer, nice food sometimes a band is playing which makes for a good night
P.
Went here for dinner for a friend's 32nd wedding anniversary. Food was good but not exceptional, prices were a bit steep for what you got. Paua fritters for entree were the star, had Waguu burger and fries....$26 thought that a bit pricey. Wine and beer selection was great. Atmosphere was busy, very noisy for a dinner venue, staff were brilliant. Would go again, but maybe for a snack and a beer.👍
D.
I admit that this was the first time I had been to The Thistle in 30 years. No longer the crusty working man's pub (and our favourite under age drinking spot!) It now has great decor and a very up market menu. Possibly just a little too up market for a pub.
The service was good however and the meals well cooked and delicious. A good range of different beer on tap from the standard to good craft beer.
Worth a look.
J.
Thank you Jacko for your exceptional service. Delicious food, 5 star service and just an overall great experience. Loved the decor and fireplace. My new favourite place to dine in Welly:)
S.
A bit pricey, but worth it. We went there with a group and had a nice table. Loved the food and the absolutely fab staff. Our waitress was knowledgeable, attentive, unobtrusive. The place hasn't got a lot of vegetarian on the menu, but they're happy to put together something tasty to cater for vegos/vegans. The only downside - it's super noisy! But I guess one can't have everything...
D.
Food here is superb - the short ribs n fish medley are just outstanding dishes. The service is really good esp in the quiet dining room and wait staff knowledge of dishes n wine is excellent. They are in the entertainment book n no credit card surcharges. You gotta try this place
N.
Superb, the service is outstanding. Food is very nice too, not the typical bar snacks.
D.
Had an extended families dinner in a private dining room. Set menu was delicious. Service was friendly and excellent.
M.
Really cool bar...great gin collection!!! Really nice staff. Look forward to spending more time there when we move to Wellington shortly :)
r.
Great atmosphere and friendly staff.
S.
A really cool pub. Very busy. Food was excellent. Very nice private dining area. Clearly a favourite with the locals.
G.
We rented a function room (Katherine Mansfield Room) for a birthday celebration with 20-25people. The room was adequate for the number of people. The service was on point and hassle free. I gave them a layout of our preferred arrangement of tables and chairs for a stand up dinner and they delivered. Food was severed hot and timely, right when guests started arriving.
The staff helped us pack or stuff and take away our cake.
Will definitely come back to Thistle Inn for future functions.
S.
Excellent on every level - food, service and ambiance,. It has become our go to place for a "ladies lunch".
B.
Good location, bar area is extremely loud, expensive bar menu. Handy location. If your planning an event there are rooms and patio type areas you can book which are quite nice. Lunch menu is fancy, expensive but very nice.
B.
Nicely renovated and quite sharp. Haven't been in here for about 20 years!
Very impressed
G.
Well laid out and a good selection of beers and other drinks. Good atmosphere but always like a nice sunny location outside which this does not have
A.
Excellent pub!! Great location as I worked at the ministry so Friday drinks was aways fun. They make a pretty sweet seafood patter and the gravy that comes with the fries is incredible. The decor is really nice and suits the 'vintage' look since it has been there since 1840. Drink prices are a tad expensive but nothing ridiculous, and well worth it for the atmosphere and friendly staff.
R.
Superb service let down by OK food.
Our waitress was beyond reproach with superb knowledge of the menu, attention to detail and a friendly manner. Well done. A 'Kid Friendly' restaurant that is welcoming with an attractive menu. My wife enjoyed her meal but my steak was underwhelming compared to the promise on offer on the menu and by the waiting staff. A bland under-cooked steak with sides that while inspired lacked substance. I would try something else if I come back.
P.
Thistle Inn is an iconic Wellington gastro pub, conveniently located for Parliament and many government agencies based in Thorndon. Well over 100 years old, the building has been well-renovated and provides good-quality meals and drinks for hardworking public servants. There is also a set of function rooms upstairs.
P.
We had a 21st birthday function there and it was my first time there too. We were using the room upstairs which is not that big but great for small numbers. There's a bar upstairs and downstairs and an extra room at the back. Lovely venue and finger food was nice.
C.
Nice place for a beer. Gets a bit too packed and can take a while to get a beer on a friday night.
l.
Great food and friendly staff. Be sure to book a table if you are planning on dining here though as it is very popular.
b.
Service was lovely! Our waiter was really talkative and genuine with us, and was very patient with our table when a very misguided older family member had a fit at him about the cut of her steak (which was in fact exactly what she had ordered 😑). Super professional, as a former hospo worker I wouldn't have held it together like that for sure.
B.
Colleagues and I regularly go to this pub for after work drinks. Its has a great vibe and the staff are always friendly. Drink options are good and they even have mulled wine in winter! Kumera fries are also very good. Definitely our favourite local.
T.
Great food, decent beer selection and always a good atmosphere for the office crowd. Bit on the pricey side, but it's in the centre of the capital so to be expected. The atrium offers a nice, bright spot to have lunch.
A.
Unique place with tasty food . It has something very special incide, by fireplace 🐀 ( kids and adults will love it). There are several rooms for private function. Love life music and Christmas tree there. Great place to visit
B.
Food and service are fine. The noise level was brutal. Even when the band started playing, the customers just yelled louder in what passes for conversation here. Perhaps this is normal for a NZ neighborhood joint.
K.
Nice area. Comfy place. Nice food however service is quite slow. Food took ages to come out.
Really attentive wait staff though. I drink so much water and every time I would near the bottom of glass, someone would be there to top up without me having to ask or signal anyone. Awesome.
R.
One of my locals, it's been here since 1840 so they must be doing something right :) Good range of good pub food that is well presented. I usually go for the Beer battered fish and chips which never fail to hit the spot for me. A Good range of drinks too.
R.
Good friday night action. Staff were friendly and helpful. Knowledgeable on wines and good food served well and promptly.
B.
Always fun; but bar menu limited to only a couple of items later in the evening which is quite disappointing.
C.
Excellent menu and nothing is ever too much for the staff. Wine list never disappoints and the Thistle is in a very handy spot. A favourite for sure!
S.
Great atmosphere. Good range of food and craft beers
G.
Absolutely a great atmosphere. Always a good crowd who come in, grab a drink or two before heading to the train. The staff is friendly and the establishment is clean and nice. All around cool place with some history behind it.
E.
Great place but a word to the wise: the patio seating gets HOT in the summer sun. They'll give you a hat if you decide to sit out there but as someone who can't eat when they're too hot, consider waiting for an indoor table or specifically request it when you book.
R.
Good food, excellent service, great venue. The trestle table legs are a pain but everything else was so good that it didn't matter.
D.
Cool old weather board pub with a great history.
Food is good and reasonably priced, staff are excellent and always friendly. Beer selection ranges from standard swill to some pretty good craft IPAs so something for most beer drinkers.
Very close to train station, and a great place to stop in for after work drinks, but get in early n Fridays because it gets pretty crowded (but not over) during the after work rush. A regular stop for me and my mates.
s.
Great place for huge group gathering, good bar food, great atmosphere, has a tiny court yard with plenty of sun under glass roof. Kids friendly with high chair. They offer virtual dining tour.
R.
Great place for your after-5s on a Friday! Good range of drinks and friendly staff. Lots of them too so you don't have to wait too long to get served. See you next Friday! :-)
J.
Good food, wine and company. Very welcoming, helpful and attentive.
R.
Such a great pub atmosphere and a great and varied menu make this one of the best places to meet with friends and have a drink. The staff are very friendly and accommodating, and being a part of Wellington's history means there is always something interesting to talk about. I go here regularly and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal or drink in a relaxed, friendly environment.
S.
The Thistle is a great old pub, ideal for after work drinks, or if you feel hungry a meal. Food prices are reasonable and the menu is innovative and has a great range to choose from. I have eaten here twice, my latest meal was the rib eye with mushrooms, cook to how I asked, mushrooms were devine. The pub has a good wine selection to go with dinner. The staff are great, always cheerful and polite.
C.
Great beer with great atmosphere!
S.
Just a great little pub. I come here often for lunch or after work drinks. Love love love the lunch menu (never been here for dinner) and one of these days I might just try another dish on the menu other than my fav... I just can't get past the Lambs Fry (I know not everyone's cuppa tea... )
I often meet friends here for drinks and they have rooms upstairs you can book (sometimes free depending on the day/time) if you have a larger group or private function.
They have a great selection of beer and wine. Friendly atmosphere and the staff are fantastic.
D.
Excellent service and excellent food. Wait staff was very polite and extremely attentive; even went to the extent of recognising a birthday card and acting accordingly.
Third time eating here every time I am very satisfied. Good value for money.
H.
My friends and I are regular visitors and love that the thistle is close to the train and bus stations. The meals are great and the staff are excellent. The level of customer service is always of the highest quality. They have an excellent selection of wine and snacks
l.
The 4 of us had a great meal last Saturday evening . It was a special night for my Wife's Birthday and our lovely Waitress Caitlin really went out of her way to make it a night to remember . All enjoyed the food but a bit disappointed that there was no crackling with the Pork Belly .
J.
Stalwart watering hole for the Thornton Civil Servant crew. Thistle Inn is as old as New Zealand is, and shows its refined class and dignity on all sides. Super beer options, if a little expensive once you do the maths, will see you, the nearby spies, and internationals being hosted well-watered. Wine choices are also strong, making Thistle a good choice for beer-lovers with significant others with differing tastes.
Food options sit at a slightly awkward median between fine pub food and set dining - this lends itself well to a really mixed crowd of tastes, though can feel awkward as a dinner venue.
Go here to enjoy the people-watching and great, beer-soaked atmosphere.
J.
I went to see a swing band as part of the jazz festival and had a lovely evening. The bar staff was fantastic and my lamb burger was tasty. I also learned that it is the oldest bar in Wellington and the only place that you can still buy a flagon of beer! (Which I'm told is about 5 pints).
B.
Nice atmosphere, great range of tasty beers and good food.
L.
Great food, service and ambiance.
D.
Thistle Inn was welcoming, food was Devine, service a great match! Catered for a Vegan GF as a special item and this was just as good as everyone else's plates! Definitely recommend a trip to Thistle!
F.
Great place, burger and fish n chips were fantastic!
J.
Great food, great service, a fabulous night
K.
A most excellent evening function !!
G.
Lunch was excellent- with a party of four who each had different menu items and thoroughly enjoyed their choice. Food was beautifully presented and wait staff were friendly and attentive.
A.
Great tavern with many beers, friendly staff, and high quality food. They even have private rooms for functions available. Thanks Richard for ensuring great service and quality everytime!
G.
The bar snacks are tasty and they have a great selection of beer, but its pretty noisy and crowded on a Friday night, and after 4pm its hard to get a table. Not overly cheap either.
B.
Great food (scollops on Black pudding is amazing) and quality craft beer. Cosy fireplace and light filled annexure. Great for a business lunch or drinks after work as well as a sit down meal - real multi purpose venue
M.
Nice modern interior, snacks were okay as were the selection of beers on tap but I thought it to be extremely expensive for the area of town and the service we received.
G.
It was very good food. Very good service however a little but let down that the drinks menu says they serve pints . How ever it's not a libt it's a 425 glass which is like a scooner.
Please don't call them pints otherwise would of given them 5 stars.

Birthday Lunch – 10h May
10 of my workmates and I rocked into the Thistle to enjoy a celebration lunch with one of our colleagues. We do dine here regularly, as the food is always of very good quality and the staff are extremely warm and friendly. (Thistle staff understand what ‘good customer service’ is – albeit due to good training or just individual desire to be of service, so maybe good recruitment. Whatever you like to call IT, it works and we keep going back for more)
• I’ve ‘never had a meal here that wasn’t great – so one builds up expectations of a certain consistency of quality and our lunch was no exception.
What did we love? I did wonder if Thistle pulled out all the stops as it was a birthday celebration
• Once again the food was really superb
• Our birthday girl received her main meal free, as per Thistles website (what a lovely gift for her & that made it even ‘more special’)
• Personalised Menu for our birthday girl – I just think that was a really lovely personal touch. (A gold bordered birthday menu designed with the name of the birthday person & given to all guests on the table) CLASSY !!
• Our birthday girl took that memento home to show her partner as she was so chuffed by it. (So I guess you’ll have more guests arriving for birthday dinners or lunch in the future Thistle Inn)
:) Thanks for a lovely celebratory lunch special and we’ll be back
A.
Loved our dinner experience today, best meal had out for a long time
Thank you
A.
Great venue, well trained staff and good food. Thanks for a very pleasant evening.
S.
Great spot for lunch. Decor is wonderful and staff are friendly and attentive. The food was delicious but maybe a little over priced. Would definitely recommend.
L.
I visited as I was told it was the oldest pub in Wellington. Maybe but it was pretty average, not much atmosphere. Fairly standard city centre pub. Nothing really bad just uninspiring.
J.
Great pub. Up market lunches. Or a busy place for a beer after work. Absolutely packed before a stadium event. It's always buzzing. Good range of beer and wine.
B.
Rib eye steak, $34. Perfectly done (medium rare), topped with bacon & potato cake and asparagus, finished off with a delicious béarnaise sauce. Not your standard pub fayre. No hesitation recommending it.
Friendly, welcoming staff and a cosy atmosphere on a quiet Monday evening.
S.
The Staff and Venue, extraordinary.
S.
It was wet outside but warm and welcoming at the Inn. After the friendly barman showed me where I could park my folding bike inside, things continued to improve. Chatty, knowledgeable staff pouring gems amongst a few nondescript ales.
R.
Very good well timed service. The signature dishes are delicious, esp. éntree, main is nice (an aquired taste). Covered courtyard was slightly chilly, good if you don't mind the noise.
K.
Kia ora,
I would like to express my thanks to Jess for such a fantastic service! We found Jess very attentive, professional and lovely to deal with. We even got a free desert and a jar of Jam, as its my birthday this weekend. Above and beyond the 'usual' customer service in other places. Thanks again Jess, you've made my day and we will be back! Ka kite! Katy :)
P.
I go here often, mostly for drinks after work and occasionally for a meal. It's got a great atmosphere and the staff are friendly and attentive. Food is always good and love the discounted drinks as a Friend of The Thistle! Thanks guys :)
D.
This is an excellent place for a drink or quality pub food near Wellington train station. They carry a pretty good range of craft beers and whiskeys. The building has a huge amount of character being well over 100 years old. This is my go to pub for a pint after one of Welly's beer festivals. If I have any complaint it would be that it does fill up quickly being the last ecent watering hole on your way to the trains.
N.
Quaint old world atmosphere befitting a pub that has been in Wellington from its starting days! Quite a lot of options for seating. Decent food and a great selection of beers. A great place to unwind after a week'd grind in Wellington.
R.
Stopped in for some drinks and nibbles. The staff were helpful and very polite a great selection of beer and wine. It was fairly busy but has a nice old feel to the place giving it a bit of character compared to alot of places around wellington.
Ordered some shared plates 3 between two people seem to be just right.
We ordered the breads and dips plenty of lovely crispy bread and delightful dips the balsamic dip was the fav having been done different than i have ever had it anywhere.
The paua fritters tasted amazing and had great texture. And the chicken was cooked just right no complaints. Will be heading back to try the rest of the menu soon.
g.
Great staff, food is ok and has a mix of craft beers and wine list is fine. Very nice setting.
M.
Great place for a few ales.....anytime of the day.. they have an interesting menu that changed monthly but is good lacks the wow factor. Rib eye steak is good value.
T.
Historic building serves function well. Rather underwhelming selection of craft ales but guest beers sometimes good. I've never eaten here.
A.
Absolutely amazing hospitality, is certainly on my go to place to shout my friends on special occassions or just take them to a place that's special to me.
M.
Great place. Bar staff see very organised so you never wait long to be served. Quite a noisey place when busy though.
T.
NIce location for pre drinks and a awesome meal before the game, great staff, unique glass floor to view the cellar, clean rest room, would highly recommend the Thistle Inn.
D.
Great place for a business lunch. Great food.
S.
Good friendly bar... Good food and beer available. Wish there were slightly more beer options on tap but that's just me.
D.
Awesome food, great staff, a mix of a pub/restaurant atmosphere. Super reccomended!
P.
Friendly and efficient staff that that go out of their way to take personal interest in their customers. No minimum wages or zero hour contracts at this establishment I'll bet. Excellent lunchtime menu too.
C.
Every visit I have had here the place has been bursting at the seams. A very popular location. Food is pricey, drinks too, but the selection is great and of good quality. Worth a visit, even for just a plate of chips & gravy and a look at the glass floor.
M.
Great evening with lovely meals. Maybe the portions could be a wee bit bigger !!!
J.
Very good table service,Steak sandwich was just that😋 No frills, great food.
A.
Great spot. Perfect haven enjoying a solid APA and some fries while waiting for the traffic chaos to clear
C.
This is an iconic tavern with a history as rich and almost as long as Wellington City itself. If you are an overseas visitor with an interest in history you need to visit this place before you leave.
r.
The Thistle Inn has a great selection of beer on tap, tasty honest food and excellent service. The there is excellent atmosphere at the Thistle and it is a good place to go for groups small and large. Highly recommended.
A.
The Thistle Inn - my local. It rocks. And here is why:
1 - staff - really friendly and helpful. Will give you a bit of a friendly ribbing if you deserve it, which I often do. Always with a smile - service is quick, even when it is full to the brim with public servants.
2 - price - become a friend of the thistle and drinks become reasonably priced for this part of town. Certainly cheaper than the Backbencher - 9.50 for a pint of craft beer. Not super cheap, but pretty good for this part of town. Best bet is to buy the super jugs - 33buks but nearly 5 pints. good value.
3 - beer range - they have your standard monteiths brews, but also have black dog on tap, and a revolving tap of greatness - they have had Keruru and some Funk Estate recently.
4 - food - they have a good range of bar snacks and they rock a good lunch.
Always warm, always friendly and always up for a laugh. Get down there.
P.
