It has great views over the river on the upper level. The meals were of a high quality standard. Good selection of dishes , nice setting and good service levels. Would recommend for that soecial dinner on the upper level. Good pub food too on the lower level. Would certainly go again. Great presentation of food.

Went for dinner and discovered it was cheap burger night. Since I am doing keto I asked for two burgers, no buns, and swapped the chips for a salad. What they gave me was even better than expected! And it tasted amazing as well. Perfect meal.

Great casual dining experience. Good service, they came and took our orders at the table even they downstairs is technically order at the bar. We had the venison which was great. The kids meals were also great and not just everything with chips!

Recently I had my 60th birthday party in the main downstairs bar of the Red. It was a fantastic night, due in part to the great venue with river views, amazing food and excellent service. Nick, the manager, was very good to deal with and all of my guests and I were really happy with the whole thing. Would recommend having an event there.

Excellent meals! Our compliments to the chef and their team. We felt under valued by the waitress as she didn't work our table and not briefed on the detail of the menu. We would have spent another $50 on drinks over our $250 spend if she had kept in contact. Hopefully constructive feedback and training for your next opportunity. Beautiful setting overlooking the river. We will be back!!

We were down at Whanganui for my nieces 21st... a group of us went to the Red Lion Inn for dinner... cant speak highly enough of the service and the food was exceptionally good with Kiwi size servings... good wine and prices also... thanks Red Lion ..big thumbs up from us Aucklanders

Hats off to the chef. The three meals we ordered looked amazing, and all three were delicious and were generous portions. We have been trying different eat-in places each week for the last few months and Red Lion have taken the top spot. All staff we dealt with were wonderful! We'll defo be back!!!

On the market in 2020 and well deserving of a passionate new owner. This place has great bones. Watch out for the severely over priced chippies. One of these days bars will figure out that menus between chef's meals can be platters not packages. Until then, I'll keep going for the free pool.

Good menu and pricing. Two out of three meals very satisfying for bar meals. Restaurant menu also available. One meal, however, the mussels and prawns, had no mussels. The waitress told us" oh yeah that will be because they are out of season". Gimme a Tui love... Yeah Right! Overall, a pleasant experience.

Had the chicken schnitzel it was very tasty the service was good and the meals didn't take to long the only reason I'm only giving 4 stars is because the lemonade I had tasted very strange. I didn't complain because it wasn't the staffs fault but I would suggest the owners charge the brand they use.

The Red Lion Inn is a good place to get a bite to eat and a nice drink. The staff is very friendly, the food tasty, and it has a nice view of the city and river. The table we sat at was a bit dirty, or they'd get 5 stars.

We were a group in an upstair room. Acoustics not very good, so noisy. The dinner menu is quite expensive but I had a cheese and chicken filo pastry and walnut salad entree as a main .which was very good Staff were under pressure with some off sick but they handled the situation extremely well maintaining a pleasant professioal attitude. Had a meal at the cafe. Chicken bacon avocado burger. Chicken was cooked perfectly, bacon was wonderful and salad wasn't smothered in dressing. Only disappointment was not enough avocado. Sat on the verandah with fantastic view of the river. Definitely recommend.

The proprietors of this institution are well known for their hospitality. no nicer place in Wanganui to drink a pint on a warm sunny day, looking out at the city over the lovely clean river. Watching the Rowers , Paddle steamer Waimarie or the Waka ama's food is good coffee also
