Reviews of The Grand Hotel

We had a lovely stay. This staff were helpful and pleasant. The first room was not to our liking but the fount desk arranged a room that was very much to our liking.
The bed was good as was the shower.
The hotel is showing the effects of the covid down turn in the paint and other minor maintenance issues but the cleanliness and safety items have not been let go.
Thankyou for a pleasant stay.

Great dining room for large parties to sit in comfort. The catering staff can meet your menu demands with care and consideration.
We provided our 2 haggis to be delivered to their kitchen well before our Burns Supper event. And they did the rest for us.
The catering staff do a great job and go beyond the required to make the event memorable for the right reasons.
Thank you staff and management of The Grand, Whanganui.

Very comfortable, food was lovely. Staff were great too

You definitely get what you paid for. It's a step above your backpackers and the rooms were mostly clean. If you're not fussy, and just need a place to sleep, then it's perfectly serviceable.
But we had an awful experience with checking in. Understandably, it is a busy time of the year. But having one cleaner to service all rooms when you've had a full house of bookings is just poor management. Check in was supposed to be at 2pm (note that check out is 10am) but our room was not finished until 6pm. We were lucky to have a balcony where we sat for 45 minutes while we waited for the cleaner to come back and vacuum/clean the bathroom. Reception could have done many things to damage control. Saying you don't know if the room is cleaned as you hand over the room key is just poor service.
It's a real shame. The location is very central, with all the amenities available within walking distance. And the room themselves are not bad.
But if you're tired and just want to check in, or if you have children, I would suggest you find another place in Whanganui - the head ache is not worth it.
S. B.
It's OK but they can improve their service and menu a lot.

Fantastic stay in old world hotel. Lovely customer service and great value for money. Enjoyed the breakfast in the grand dinning room and our kids enjoyed the history of the place.
J. C.
Usually stay here when in Whanganui, reasonably rates for the rooms, always been clean and tidy.
S. B.
Central and had all the amenities for my short stay...a short walk to tennis courts if that's the reason for your visit!
J. E.
A good place to stay but needed some cleaning around windows

This is an old character hotel. The rooms are up to date enough for a pleasant stay, I didn't expect luxury, but the bed and bedding was great, room was clean, the remote worked and the shower was good. I had a falafel salad down in traditional bar, which was very nice, well priced and quickly delivered. The staff were great, especially Rupal.
I personally love seeing older hotels carrying on, so I would like to add half a star to this review for all the interesting historical stuff on the walls.

The dear old Grand has the most fabulous staff - fm Jeremy GM, Sachin, Mgr, lovely woman behind bar & Cambodian cleaner…. Truly while the Grand dame is a bit tired, it has character - is immaculate - great service & staff - Sachin rectified a wee hot water problem we had very quickly.
It wasn’t their fault it had broken but boy their efforts to change our room/s immediately was impressive. If u like a hotel with a bit of rundown old Downton Abbey / Upstairs/Downstairs … a couple of nites is great. Location is brill.
Thank you
Chris & Deb

Helpful staff, great omlettes, good coffee, fast WiFi. I unexpectedly ended up using the restaurant this week as a place to work remotely (via laptop). Very grateful to the staff for making me feel welcome, and compliments to the chef on the best omlettes that I can remember :).

We turned up for dinner after 8pm. Friendly bar staff. Excellent roast beef dinner and fish pie was soooo good and we didn't have to wait very long. Very friendly proprietor and enjoyable to talk to. It happened to be the last Sunday of the month and there was a variety of Irish and folk music being enjoyed by a group of patrons and participants. Lovely evening and there was some talent there. Recommend it. Enjoyed having a look at the beautiful old tasteful decor in the hallway and dining room. It has charm and warmth which is missing in so many modern establishments.

Dandy. Stayed in the old quarters. Very dated, needs new carpet. Exceptionally clean, super comfy bed, great towels. Friendly staff.
D. A.
Popped in for lunch today but under new management, the actual Irish pub side of the business isnt open during the day. So we had to have our lunch in the big barny part of the building. Lunch was OK. But I come to the Grand to be in the pub. Won't be coming back for lunch if things stay the same.
D.
Nice breakfast ,rooms need a fan
J. N.
Really enjoyed my stay here, well priced for what is provided. The lift is a bit scary but that didn't stop me using it anyway.

Beautiful building! We spent an hour looking at the prints, paintings and photos on the sprawling hallways and staircases. It’s difficult to imagine how they are able to make money and keep a facility in such clean and tidy shape given its size, age and the reasonable room price. Our corner room had a lounge with a view onto the boulevard and there was a spa tub in the bathroom, and flat screen TVs in both rooms . We’d highly recommend staying there to all but the fussiest.
R.
Great trip back into 1930's - an iconic building.
B.
The Room was a bit noisy , the cover bed was very old and a bit dirty , the remote control was full of dust. is a shame, because on your website the place looks better condition. The bathroom was clean, the continental breakfast was ok for hostel not for hotel. Definitely I thing you need to improve a lot of things.
A. L.
We stayed here because the hotel was right next to a wedding we were attending and i'm so glad we did! This place is awesome - great, laid-back staff, really friendly and helpful. The entranceway is gorgeous and really beautifully done with antique pictures in frames and historical displays. The rooms are really awesome and old fashioned in a good way, and there's free breakfast at the breakers downstairs. Great value for money and a great atmosphere. 😊 the Irish pub downstairs looks great too and has a really interesting menu with south African Indian curries and things, would have loved to try it.
M. W.
Really enjoyed our stay at the Grand. Good value for money, and the old lady has been nicely restored. The dining room is particularly elegant. Lots of power points in our room for cellphone and iPad charging etc. Would definitely return. Breakers Cafe where the continental breakfast is served not so elegant but has a nice relaxed beach theme.
R. C.
The rooms were excellent for middle of the road accommodation.. the Grand is very easy to find and once you park the car in their car park you can walk all the town as its on the main street. It has good food outlets stretched for children as well
Would stay again
J. H.
Good location. Staff were very friendly. It’s a really nice old historic building but definitely no where near a four star hotel. Although the rooms were not as outdated as some previous reviewer mentioned, the free wifi service is practically non existent so if you’re travelling for work and need wifi, do not stay here.
M. S.
Good hotel as we drove from Auckland down to Wellington. It had hot water, comfy bed, fridge, and hot chocolate, tea, and coffee. We really liked the pub for fish and chips. The breakfast at their restaurant was good too. Don't expect an American continental breakfast though, toast with lots of different toppings, cereals, and hot coffee/tea.
P. N.
A great historic pub in the heart of Wanganui with beautiful old decor. The wife and I had a great meal here. Good prices, good menu and friendly atmosphere.
S. O.
Always love stopping here for a meal when we're travelling through Whanganui. The staff are always friendly, the food is fresh and there'll always be good company. Apparently Thursday night there's a talented local group of musicians and poets who get together. Worth going for listen to them apparently. Enjoy.
N. R.
Our group of 9 recently enjoyed an overnite stay at The Grand. Its central to the shopping area and local amenities. Friendly service. Rooms are fresh and clean. However most in our group had one complaint and it was that the shower pressure was very weak and also water temperature was luke warm. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay including a complimentary light brekky. We will definitely come back.
P. C.
I was at the Rosie O Grady Irish bar which is part of the Grand Hotel, along with Breakers. The Guiness was fine and the meal substantial and reasonably priced. Best experienced as part of a large group.
L. M.
I love the fact that there are 3 distinctly different eateries in this one beautiful building. I have enjoyed meals in each. Last Christmas I enjoyed an excellent meal at The Grand. This year I'm returning for a repeat & look forward to it.
J. M.
Always love to visit. Extra friendly staff who take the time to make every visit a great one. Meals are delicious and very quick. Service is impeccable. Prices are very cheap. Lovely atmosphere. Can't fault it.
S. A.
Great Irish pub feel. Excellent service and food especially when they have their food of the day such as whitebait... Good value and entertaining. Love the hotel, its grandeur and sense of time gone by.
D. M.
Great atmosphere and delicious food. The customer service was exceptional- and they were under staffed. We will be back. Thanks guys
S. m. C.
Fantastic food atmosphere and real Irish charm. A must for dinner to stay and for receptions. Great drinks and friendly staff make a visit there well worth the effort.
A. P.
Great hospitality, Jeremy a great host👍👍✔
B. H. (.
Great place for a meal and a couple of pints of Guinness , meals reasonably priced. The staff really friendly and welcoming so if you want great food and welcoming service this is the place for you the place is also children friendly.
E. W.
Steak kai was nice. However my sons burger patties had not been cooked right through. They were pink in the middle (not too happy about that)
J. H.
Delicious food, friendly staff, able to watch rugby good win Hurricanes
M. B.
Needed to find a place to stay at the last minute and they have a late check-in time which suited us. Clean and tidy suited us for the night. Only downside was the water temp in the shower was only lukewarm.
n. a.
Great service, beautiful place and yummy food 😊😋☺️👍👍👍👍 Big thumbs up we will be definitely staying there again soon 👌👌😁
r. G.

Fantastic place to stay. So close to town great pub under Neath with great food. And a free breakfast. Warn and clean while staff very friendly and helpful. Plus plenty of free parking and WiFi.and very reasonable rates
J. K. M.
A beautiful place. I met the new owners tonight and are very charming. Love this place and that the owners are a people of vision and live Wanganui. Bless you guys.
S. L.
Great old fashioned hotel with an Irish bar. Convenient location.
Can pay extra for cooked breakfast if you don't like the complimentary one.
D. R.
I loved this old Hotel lovely food and staff I just wasn't happy one night when they had a quiz night and the lady running it asked us to move to another table because she wanted the table we were sitting at next to the bar we found this very very rude and never went back again after all we were paying customers there for drinks and food and a lot of the other people were only there for the quiz night not buying food or even drinks :( but we ended up leaving and having our dinner somewhere else as this lady wouldn't budge when we said no we were at this table first so we let her have it and moved on to another Hotel/pub
J. J.
It was nice and luxurious for a affordable price. The location was perfect being close to the shops and nice and secure being opposite the police station. The rooms are compfy and have nice beds. Over all 5/5 STARS
k. m.
Fantastic authentic period decorations - beautiful historical building .lovely clean surroundings.
J. C.
Great place to stay, handy to town, friendly staff, good food, and breakfast was included in the price which was great. Would recommend it to anyone, will definitely stay there again.
S. F.
I was attending a conference in this hotel, so I decided to stay here too. Couldn't have fridge, tv, heater on at the same time as there were only two plugholes in that part of the room. The door to the bar needs an oil. But otherwise fine for my needs and I'd stay here again if in Wanganui.
K.
Beautiful old hotel. Clean & comfortable rooms, good service from the front desk.
A.
Friendly service all-round. Nice atmosphere and changed tv channel to rugby for us to watch
R. P.
Nice staff and location and fair tariff $79 for the night. Nice room but some late night and early morning traffic noise. Had a couple of problems. Shower didn't work, tv had interference on all channels and free internet was intermittent.
P. W.
Great little Hotel, clean and comfy. Friendly staff and great Irish pub
S. T.
We only stayed 1 night but it was clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced. Lots of wonderful photos shielding Wanganui's history.
J. K.
Great 'Old fashioned' comfortable hotel.
Very interesting, welcoming proprietor. (If you're lucky he may 'tickle the ivory's on the Grand Piano.)
K.
Cheap and reliable. Thank you 😊
R. M.
The food was good value for money and with an atmosphere that catered well to functions and larger family dinners. Well recommended set menus.
L. H.
Very comfortable room. Slept well, quiet. Very friendly staff. Continental breakfast included which was a bonus. Would happily stay again.
S.
Room was fine but the hotel seemed poorly managed, only 1 cleaning staff member, room only finished cleaning around 5.45pm.
F. I.
Myself and my wife stayed here September 2014 for 3 nights. Absolutely loved it!
Great team and customer service!
Room was clean and tidy.
L.
Mmm... We use to stay... No more Ruined by one staff member who stole My Wife's New jacket... Police located it and returned next day... This has put us off staying there again... Grrrr... Management didn't seem to care... Not did they seem to believe My wife...
A. P.
Customer service was amazing! Highly reccomend this charming old lady. 92 years young. Emma and Rupa were awesome
K. P.
Getting tired looking and shower could not be regulated. Otherwise comfortable and all we needed for night.

L. G.

K.
very nice, relaxing atmosphere.. clean and friendly.. you guys rock
P.
Faded grandeur? Time warp to the past and in the town centre so a short walk from everywhere.
L. B.
The Grand is an institution in Wanganui, and is a classic three story buiding with a grand piano in the old fashioned lounge bar a double decker bus out the back. Neville the proprietor is a classic in himself. Even the faults in the place are charming, The Irish bar is warm and handy place to watch sports or drunks on St Patricks day Breakers with a faux surfer theme has good food, and the rooms are well classic NZ pub style imagine yourself back in the days of your grandparents.
A.
Great place for a function. The manager Jeremy is great to deal with.
C. S.
Fairly average pub, food looked OK but didn't get to try it. Nice Guinness on tap.
S. E.
Just lacks some loving in decor but staff do try hard. Ideal for older folk.

(Translated) In the associated pub especially dear service. Not only did we have a problem with an empty cell phone battery, but also with a lodging we had booked in another city, as well as a rental car that did not want to. The service staff helped us in a very nice way to solve all our problems. big thank you!
