Reviews of Horeke Boutique Hotel
E.
Had nice stay, Michael and his staff very friendly and helpful. The place does need updating, but I understand cashflow might not be great in times of Covid. The food was nice. Really enjoyed the twin coast cycle ride definitely will do again.

Wow..... The accommodation takes u back to 60s but in a good way. The rooms (4) are all period correct with modern tiles bathrooms attached to every room. Loung with kitchen is relaxing space with the deck on the water itself.
You can rent a room or the full house, we did the later and had friends from Auckland join us for the nights.
Fishing possible but only caught baby snappers and sharks aka dogfish.
There are 2 brand new wharfs, perfect for fishing and jumping on and off!
D.
Wonderful Historic place to visit, but basically closed! We wanted to have a beer/wine whilst there but Bar all closed! Other vehicles arrived for same reason but all turned away!! Shame!

Stayed here for 3 nights and did the bike ride, which was awesome, unfortunately the ebike hadn't been maintained and wouldn't change gears and the throttle was a bit useless. Bernadette who was our shuttle driver was very knowledgeable and helpful. Meals were good and beds were comfy but plumbing need a bit of TLC, leak in our bathroom and not much pressure. Beautiful spot and very peaceful place to stay
J.
Not sure what the opening hours were but we were allowed in to wait for our biking friends. However, we were not offered anything from the bar...owner never came near.Beautiful old building on the shores of the upper hokianga harbour.
R.
Fantastic place to stay for adults and children. The room was beautiful and had incredible views of the Hokianga harbour. Mike the manager was so accommodating and went out of his way to make sure we were looked after. Would recommend having dinner there as so delicious and wished we could of stayed longer 👍
J.
What a great place. We stayed in the house over the water for 3 nights and rode the twin coast cycle trail. Pet transferred us and our bikes. We returned each evening to a delicious meal and super comfy beds. Would thoroughly recommend a beautiful peaceful place and everything was just perfect.
D.
We had A very relaxing stay, lovely room, beautiful views of the harbour, very accommodating hosts, and the meal (scotch steak, and lamb rack were cooked to perfection. )
A.
Great views! Ebike tracks are awesome
M.
We stayed 2 nights after cycling the bike trail, and had the most magnificentmeals and the views were awesome. Such a pleasant place to stay and chill out. Loved our time here.

Not on the main track but well worth the detour, the Horeke Hotel is a great place to dine or just for coffee or a beer. Owner Peter is a great raconteur and host with great local knowledge. Food was superb both nights we dined there. Peter has 4 bedroom accommodation next door overlooking the water which we can also highly recommend.
T.
Absolutely loved this place. Pete is an excellent host and very knowledgeable about the area. Went with four other people. Nothing was too much trouble. Rooms and bathrooms lovely and clean. The evening meals were very generous proportions and cooked beautifully. As advertised the fish is always fresh! We can't wait to go back.

Greeted at the door by polite staff member named Micheal and was shown around the hotel. I wasn't planing on staying as our family homestead was around the corner. As i sat down and learned about the history of the hotel and admire the authenticity of the design of the building made by native wood. I found myself emotionally connected to this hotel. As it brought back the memories of my grandfather Thompson Pomare. He loved Horeke and the tavern that it use to be because it brought everyone together from Horeke. Live bands, to birthday and wedding celebrations. But my personal favorite was when i had buried a loved one with my grandfather and been accepted by my grandfather as a man for joining him in what he did best and having a cold beer out of the tap and walking out to the front and being told that he was proud 15 years ago. There is no tavern, but the new business opportunities that the hotel brings to the community and is working to bring cyclists and more tourist through Horeke, brings more business opportunities that inline with health and well-being.
A.
We enjoyed our stay at Horeke at the end of our cycle trail ride. The room was pleasant and comfortable with a great view. Good hosts and very obliging staff. The bikes we hired from there were great too.
A.
I can't comment on the food because I just had a drink after the cycling trail. But I can recommend the beer garden as a lovely place to unwind. The owner was really helpful and kindly helped us with finding a boat service (Ranui tours) Excellent service helping people out who weren't staying at the hotel.
B.
Turned up unannounced on my bike, was immediately welcomed by the folks drinking in the garden bar, then by the staff. They allowed me to camp there which was awesome and I had a lovely meal too, and stunning view. Peter was super helpful with local info and deciding my route out of there: the gravel wasnt bad at all and I loved my ride to opononi from there. Thanks so much! Would love to visit again.

A quiet weekend away was much needed and that's what we got. Hospitality was great, bed and room excellent.
Dinner was enjoyed with a roaring fire for extra warmth and ambiance.
Our second time here and not too far from Whangarei. We will be back..
T.
Had a good time here. Position on the harbour is wonderful and the tavern has an interesting history.
We stayed two nights in two different rooms. Rooms were clean but a bit rustic and airless. It was hot so we had to either have mozzies or air..would benefit from air con or just basic bug screens.
Hosts are very hospitable and we enjoyed steaks and beers on the deck. They also provide a shuttle for bikes if you are considering biking part of the twin coast bike trail...we really recommend the Kaikohe to Horeke section about 45ks.
All up a good weekend.

Sat out on the deck and watched the sun go down. The Hokianga harbour is so still and peaceful and was the backdrop to a great meal. I had Pork Belly with crackling that was cooked to perfection, it came with Kumara mash and seasonal vegetables, which were also delicious. Great place to have a cold drink, relax, and have a wonderful dining experience.
B.
We stayed here to do part of the Twin Coasts bike trail. The Horeke hotel was excellent and the restaurant food outstanding especially considering it is the only place to eat. Note there are no local shops or fuel so make sure you have what you need. Peter at the hotel will shuttle you to a place on the trail with your bike, (or you can hire one from him), and you ride back. Or do your own thing. We really also enjoyed the Puketi forrest as well. Take some books to read or borrow from the hotel's library.
M.
I totally endorse the reviews on the great food(especially the seafood chowder ), stunning views, owners who go out of their way to make us welcome, and sitting on the deck as the sun goes down watching all the hundreds of seabirds landing on the wharf. This place is truly magical, and what's more...4 superb ensuite rooms with new kitchen , deck and lounge nearly completed in an adjacent house.Perfect for a group to stay together !
Be prepared to put on weight with the lovely meals !!You have been warned !
H.
Stumbled upon this little gem of a place by accident. Pete and the staff are all really friendly, our room was fantastic and the food (the snapper and the rack of lamb) was excellent. Really enjoyed our brief little stay.
D.
This pub has so much history for the whole hokianga area on the walls that it is very well worth going to.peter will give the guided tour. The food is awsome. The views are awesome.launch your bout a opononi and do a pub crawl up the hokianga. Stick to the mangroves as you go past the marker to the right or you will beach yourself as the tide goes out.
B.
Heaps of character in the building and the publican! Delightful situation looking over the upper Hokianga harbour with lovely bird life including Spoonbills, now numbering 14. Campervan friendly. Well worth staying over there, particularly in the recently vamped house next door with 4 double rooms with modern onsuites, plus kitchen, which are part of the Tavern accommodation too. Peter is a great host too. Full shuttle available for the Twin Coast cycle trail on offer also, why not use it?
J.
Staying in the hotel as we speak. The owner made the extra effort for my late arrival to jump in the kit hen and whip me up some dinner personally. The rooms are well kept and it has a lot of oldschool charm to it. All in all, very happy so far. Even got a bit of wifi.
r.
My husband and I did the twin coast cycle way. Opua to horeke the first day, then horeke to opua the next. We stayed here. Excellent accomodation, excellent food . Top class hosts. Highly recommend doing this.
M.
What a place guest sevice only. unbelievable place will Definitely stay longer next time great place to stay for rail trail ride. The only place to stay and be picked up and dropped off for rail trail. Wish we had stayed here
S.
An absolute gem. We loved the setting and peaceful surrounds. Peter and Laurel are amazing hosts and nothing is too much trouble. Love it!!!
N.
Reputedly New Zealand's oldest tavern. Beautiful wood abounds in the interior. Stunning views from the large deck and adjacent garden. Good food.
K.
On Ancestors' trails at the Hokianga.
Beautiful views, nice guestrooms, knowledgeable owner operator. Twin Coast Cycle Way & Mangungu Mission JAC (Just around the corner)
From the weekend on (?)you will be able to hire bikes from here and explore the area and ride the Twin Coast Cycle way to and from Kaikohe or further away!
There are also plans to extend accommodation options from the current three rooms in the actual hotel building to accommodation in additional historic Horeke buildings.
The bar and lounge are open for everybody. Meals are available for the public and hotel guests. Breakfast as well.
The rooms are ensuite, spacious and especially the corner Riverside one has great views. Oystercatchers were gathering on the front lawns, mist lifting in the morning and clear night sky - made for perfect photo sessions.
J.
We had a great welcome here after our bike ride from Kaikohe. The cold beer was fantastic, and the setting of this pub is pretty special.
B.
Great experience. The food was simple and excellent. The accomodation just great.
C.

L.
Best seafood chowder ever. Lovely old pub full of beautiful kauri. Even the bathroom counters. Amazing view across the Hokianga. Don't miss it.
P.
Excellent location, comfortable rooms wonderful views and beautiful food. Laurel and Peter are great hosts and make it special too.
Z.
Beautiful history, solid food, good selection of drinks & great customer service. Feels very local. Lots of places to sit, both formally & casually
B.
The little-known Horeke Tavern on the edge of the Hokianga Harbour is calling time on its southern competition as the country's oldest pub.
But the owners of Wellington's Thistle Inn (built in 1840) and Nelson's Upper Moutere Tavern (1850) refuse to admit defeat, each still claiming to run the oldest original pub with an original licence.
Ken Maddren, whose son Peter owns the Horeke, in the Far North, said the tavern's "bones" went up in the 1820s when sailing ships were being built at the port. The pub was licensed in 1842, he said.
R.
Great stop if you're doing the coast to coast bike trail as they do a shuttle service or if you are just touring around. Very friendly crew and very good food.
S.
The hotel wasn't open but it's really peaceful people are blessed to live here
N.
Nice place to take break, for food and drink, with good outdoor space overlooking Hokiangi Harbour. Also end of Twin Coast Cycle Trail.
C.
What a lovely place. You can almost feel the history. A wonderful venue and delicious food. Thank you Horeke Tavern
N.
Great place to stay, very chilled. Note hotel is only open to those you stay, not a public bar.
B.
