Big J's takeaways i would say is an under rated shop. They make awesome burgers and is pretty economical too. They are not located in the penrose town centre and is a wee bit away from it. But they do produce better burgers than any joint in penrose. You have to order online through their website and its not an dine in place. I ordered dragon burger and it was spicy as they advertise it to be. I will definitely be going back to try more of their burgers and chips.

The burger gods have bless this man with the ability to take the humble burger much further than it was intended to go. Honestly hands down the best gourmet takeaway shop around pound for pound, fish and chips, burgers, special of the week all are beyond exceptional. Order in advance, you will be waiting as things this good aren’t done at drive through speed.

I was introduced to this place from a friend, I live 2 hours away . I find any excuse to make the trip up. Tonight was my first experience of a mistake - they forgot a burger on an online order, called them up, the owner was very apologetic and went above and beyond to rectify the easily made mix up. I will continue to recommend and make excuses to visit and consume the delicious food on offer!

I made an online order from their website and brought the burgers back home. They have a decent selection of burgers within the range. They also have a special of the week which is on their facebook page. The place is hidden near Sylvia park. It is a bit out of the way. Pick up was fairly easy at the entrance. The burgers are pricier than others but also larger and tastier. I tried their special of the week, Its gravy baby, a steak burger with wedges and bacon. I enjoyed it but not as much as the hotdog. The Big js hotdog had everything in it and was really tasty. The bacon and onions made it really nice. Their kumara wedges were also decent but it doesn't come with any sauces. We also got some spring rolls and mac and cheese bites. The mac and cheese bites were nice. The spring roll was ok. Nice cheap dinner.

I can't believe I've been in Mt Wellington for over 2 yrs and only tried Big Js yesterday. Ohhhh boy, I'm in trouble being a big foodie and having this place so close to me. Their buggers are really juicy, top quality and will satisfy your cravings. Their fish, chips and sausage were top quality as well. Hats off to the chef!!!! I have been visiting this eatery for years now and they are certainly one of the best burger joints in Auckland. The food is remarkable, with a different variety of burgers available on the menu along with other options. The prices are reasonable, and they provide fast and excellent service as well. The owner is a nice guy who is always welcoming, and so are the staff. I generally prefer a steak and egg burger or alternatively their classic chicken, and they never disappoint. If you like burgers and live in Auckland, try this place. It is superb.

Drove to here all the way from out West Auckland as have heard good things about this place! And we were most definitely not dissapointed. In my opinion the food here is well worth the money, generous portions and super tasty burgers. I had the Crispy Chicken burger and it was very delicious. There is a fair amount of parking around a few seats both inside the shop and outside if you want to eat there instead of taking your food home. Think at some point will be back here again as I am keen to try some of the other burgers and weekly specials they have here!

In search of a good angus burger like the Hardees US - Middle east I ended going to all some Karl and his juniors and my friend suggested Big’j and by far the best burger place in NZ. All these Furg QTN, Whiteladee CBD and butterburgers can take a chill for now😉 Big J’s, you 🍔🔥

Delicious and fair priced and you really get what you oay for! The super steak burger was filled with natural mushroom flavor and the steak was soft but with a small bite ot it making it a get mix. And the chips are the best I have ever had from a burger place worth the visit and eats. 5/5 will be going back.

Awesome burgers! Ordered though Uber a few weeks back and watched it sit in the car for nearly 30mins while he did another pick up. By the time the burger arrived it was cold and mushy (vege corn burger), not Big Js fault but will never use uber again.

Big J’s never disappoints! Their buns are very fresh and soft, and the fish is nicely battered. Not to mention their chicken salt fries are to die for. They tend to be quite busy so I recommend calling up and making an order as there is usually a 30 minute wait. Despite this there has never been a mistake with our orders and the staff are always friendly and cheerful.

Big J's Takeaways epitomises everything classic kiwi takeaways should be. The Super Steak burger was honestly the best burger I've ever had. Tender steak, juicy mushrooms and delicious sauce. My partner had the burger of the week, which had panko chicken and cheese and jalapeño bites and was absolutely fantastic. For sides we had the onion rings and the sweet potato wedges. Cooked to perfection, crunchy and tasty. Tried the bacon butty as well, and it was lovely. Ordered tonight in Level 3 lockdown, and it was fast and arrived hot and fresh. The taste transported me to a summer on the beach with beer. Big J's is amazing, definitely choose it if you are wanting reasonably priced delectable burgers.

Purely Fish N Chips review: on this particular afternoon I had a tag squad come from Australia wanting to try some good local fish n chips shop and Big J's was the closest. Even though we never had any of their famous burgers (we had too much burgers that weekend) the fried goodness they offered satisfied our afternoon food craves. Fresh seafood and golden brown chups, just like the childhood memories of old. To top it off it surprised the visitors with the prices. Looked like a great busy working team at the back too. I'll be back for the burgers soon!

Small takeaway joint, but don't be fooled by the absence of a queue, when we arrived at 11:45 they had a 1.5 hr backlog of call-in orders (best to order in advance next time) , so we ordered the burger of the week (the Chuck Norris) and came back at 1:15 and it was ready for collection. Finally made it to this place to try one of their burgers - totally worth the wait. I had the burger of the week which was the relish it (garlic marinated chicken breast, sautéed onions, streaky bacon, camambert, pesto aioli, balsamic beetroot relish, lettuce, tomato, and topped with beer battered onion rings) and a scoop of chips. Awesome meal, will be returning soon :)

Had the Super Steak Burger it was full of flavour and quality produce. I especially like their raw fish salad flavour packed. Chips are not the absolute best I have had but nothing to detract from my rating.

A good while back I'd call it a tie for best burgers in Auckland between here and Burger Queen. In my opinion this is the best burger place in Auckland. Every time I have visited here or Dad has popped in to fetch our order the food has been consistently high quality and not to mention absolutely tasty and fresh! I think it'd be an out right lie if you said their burger patties were bland, as they're well seasoned and full of flavour! On top of the food being well worth the trip, the customer service is friendly and to a high standard. Sometimes when the place is very busy you'll still receive delicious food and service with a smile. Ditch tonight's decision to get maccas or bk and support this amazing local business! Wow, and I thought burger fuel was good. I got the vegetarian falafel burger. The patty was a whopper really, and it was filling and tasty, not to mention at a crazy low price. Would be great to see more vegetarian options, I'm sure they'd be really popular.

Came because we heard the burgers were the best but to be honest they were average. Had the classic cheese and mushrron magic burgers. I love the fact the patties are home made but they were lacking in flavour and the texture of them were a little mushie. I wasn't sure if the spicey mexicanish flavour was coming from the patties or the sauce but I didn't really like it. Liked the concepts of the burgers but I feel they need a little tweaking I'm terms of flavour. The fish and chips however were delicious! We had the fish n chips for 2. Fish was cooked perfect and batter was yummy. Chips crispy and golden. Must be nice fresh oil because it was yum. They also ask you which type of salt you would like on your fish and chips which was cool. Would go again for the fish and chips but probably not the burgers. Forgot to take pics sorry.

Short story is: just DELICIOUS. Now the long story. It's hard to pick up the best from the menu. We had 5 different burgers, so we tasted from each other. If it was to be a comment from one of the Master Chef, I would start talking about rich flavors etc. But I stick to each of them was delicious. However, you may not be impressed with the look of the actual shop, but that's only the facade. Premises are clean whatsoever.

My first visit here, can't believe it took me so long. Ordered their famed cheese burger, but I goofed up my order and went for a lettuce wrap instead of buns. And yet, this remains to be the best beef patty I've ever had. I'm a chicken person and avoid red meat;...Big J nailed it. Can't wait to go back again for a correct order. Loved their house aioli plus no carb burger ain't half as bad :). I think I found my goto burger spot. Edit 1: Tried their go-to cheeseburger, this time with bun and now it's my new favorite. Edit 2: Mushroom Burger is my new favorite. Edit 3: They make a mean Crispy chicken burger. Instead of the typical slathered mayo/aioli, this one has avo and it's the best version of Crispy chicken burger I've had so far. Now this is my favorite.

Underrated local gem. They may look like an ordinary takeaway joint from the outside, but the food and service are far from being one. The burgers are made to order and the kumara fries are one of the best we've had, period. The quality of these burgers are easily priced 2-3 times more if served at a restaurant. The fish burger, beef burger and steak burger are some of our all time favourites.

This place does the best burgers in town and is affordable. What more could you ask for? Also, the dairy a couple of doors down has some great cheap drinks and lollies to accompany the burger of the week. Pineapple fritter pretty mean too.

My first time to this takeaway, heard about it through a friend and had a look online before going in. We had the "corny cow" which was the burger of the week and I must say. It was the tastiest, most flavourful burger I've eaten in so long! It had a chargrilled, garlic and herb marinated steak with bacon, aioli, red onion, cheese and topped off with a nice corn fritter. Apologies for the long review, you just have to try this! The burger of the week was $16 but there are burgers there that are cheaper and would easily be just as delicious, I have no doubt. We also ate it with sweet potato fries that were $6 a scoop, we had two scoops between the three of us but with the size and flavour of the burger we could've done with a single scoop. Service was also nice but thank you so much for the food!

Tasty burger of the week was very delicious with crispy onion rings inside yum yum very creative idea. Although had to wait 30mins for my order when I was told it would only be 20mins over the phone by the guy. Ordered half scoop of chips which hardly had any seasoning of my choice on them and portion was actually quite small for $2. However I did enjoy my burger so i would probably reccomend based on the burger i tried. Asked about the homemade desserts on the menu online i was abruptly told over the phone it's not available and apparently it was replaced with something else, the guy was very direct and sounded rude on the phone without apology. But the counter lady was happy and seemed friendly when I arrived to pick up my order.

There aren’t many places you can still get a cheeseburger for $6, let alone at the size that Big Js provides. Located in such an unassuming location along a row of neighbourhood shops, you’d never know this place existed nor it’s reputation except by word of mouth. Recommendation for a quick snack would be their onion rings, but make sure to check out their weekly specials and more importantly, order ahead of time over the phone..especially if you’re going to be having it for lunch on a Thursday or Friday.

The service, fish and gravy were above and beyond typical New Zealand takeaway restaurant standards, and the fact that Big J's is open until late is fantastic. However, the food never failed to be overly greasy, overcooked and overpriced. The skirt steak in steak burgers, chicken as well as bacon in various items on the menu were overdone and impossible to chew. Improvements are required, but the takeaway restaurant has a lot of potential.

Big J's is legendary, while it may not have been around for years, it is an institution in the Auckland Burger Scene. They were the pioneer of the recent 'Burger of the Week' jam that places like The Flaming Onion have jumped on board, as well as being the first to build a cult following on Facebook of eager fans hungry to see the next gourmet creation posted up week after week on a Thursday. As well as the amazing BOTW specials, the standard menu is bomb as well, the Spicy Chicken and Bacon burger being the best imo - be sure to ask for extra sauce if you like it hot, and get it 'man sized' if you want to stuff yourself so full you enter a state of gluttonous stupor. Can't give anything but 5 stars, the owner Jase is passionate as all hell and makes a damn good burger! Chur

Super scrumptious gourmet burgers! One of those legendary takeaways that is just hidden away in the suburbs. Apart from the long wait time and slight increase in price to what I've been told, it's a very solid burger-joint/takeaway. Everything just tastes unprocessed compared to McDonald's & Burger King. Always looking forward to seeing what they have for 'Burger of The Week', some extraordinary creations have come outta the kitchen.

I thought I had already reviewed this place. Seems I hadn't but here goes. Truly a hidden gem. I had heard so many things about this place and when I found out they were just down the road from home I had to check them out. They are always busy, and when I see a place always busy it means to me that they are popular which also equates to them doing a bloody good job at what they do customers keep coming back. Its best to phone your order in and then come and pick up. But if you don't mind waiting then place your order in person. You will usually bump into people you know here as well. The steak burger is to die for, I always get mine with added mushrooms. Prices are good as well and the service is awesome. This is a lil joint that shouldn't be overlooked. Come in and give it a try. Worth the wait :)

Big J's is definitely the source of the best burgers in Auckland. Weekly specials are awesome, and selecting from the standard menu never fails. Very high standards (believe me after 100+ burgers :) and friendly staff, even on fridays when they're pretty busy. Expect 30-60 minutes pickup time on late orders (after 11am on Friday) so call them early. Don't fool yourself, you can't just walk in and grab a burger in 5 minutes, you have to be prepared. (it is NOT a complaint!) It is a unique experience and you'll fell in love with those meals. Don't forget the kumara chips. uncomparable price/value ratio. mind you.

It's in the middle of nowhere, but well worth the journey (and the wait). Many other burger joints have popped up around Auckland. With owners quickly realising how profitable it is to flip a burger and sell it for north of 10 dollars. Don't let those places tarnish your expectations of a burger. Big J's sets itself well apart from those other places, offering stunning gourmet burgers with nearly all burgers well below the 10 dollar mark. You can't look past the combo as their chips are perfectly made. Problem is that you'll be drooling for 15 to 20 minutes waiting for the burgers to be made while streams of other patrons frequent in and out of the place. You don't need to go to Queenstown for a good burger, there's one just off Sylvia Park waiting for you to discover it. Tip: Try the chicken and bacon burger, it's absolutely divine. It's a takeaway place, so it only has three or so tables, unless you're prepared to wrestle the other patrons for them, you might need to come with a plan to enjoy the burgers elsewhere.
