Reviews of Cazador
C.
My husband and I ate at Cazador for the first time last week. We did 'the feast' which is the chef's menu essentially, and we were blown away. Super glad we went with the feast option, I wouldn't have thought to order those things otherwise but we loved everything. Really great value for $90. The service was excellent, and the decor is wonderful, too! Highly recommend
K.
Who cares about the food, the service was absolutely amazing... just kidding the food was great as well. We had a table down the back near the bar and had absolutely amazing and attentive service, despite the restaurant being short of staff due to the pandemic.
I would like to thank Cazador for hosting a great evening with my family.
K.
The wine was amazing and the food was even better. I was blown away by everything they presented. The quail was the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted and I left with a new appreciation for sherry. This was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had anywhere.
R.
A lovely dining experience - went here for my friend's birthday dinner on his recommendation (based on a recommendation from a colleague) and I was quite happy with my meal. So glad that there were non-game options (they're known for their extensive game menu) as I'm not a fan of game meat. I'd certainly go back here and shout out to our waiter who looked after us. I think next time I'd like to sit in the courtyard area!
S.
Second time here and Cazador still exceeded our expectations! Firstly, Simon is an absolute gem and such as asset to the restaurant. Every dish we ordered was outstanding, with special mention to the amazing grilled sweetbreads (please do not take this off the menu!) and dark chocolate brandy mousse. We will be back!
C.
I've been meaning to try Cazador for a long time and finally got the chance last weekend. We had the feast menu with the drinks pairing and it was a fantastic experience. Everything was delicious and we got to try so many things we never would have explored otherwise. Highly recommend.

We went for a meal with our son prior to leaving for overseas.
The meals were nothing short of first class, exquisite.
The crispy octopus was superb, just the right consistency, and cooked for my taste perfectly.
My son and I both ordered the quail which was also tender and also spot on.
My wife had the venison, she is not in favour of under cooked meats, but this was also cooked perfectly and could not be faulted.
Cannot fault the service.
Prices are reasonable, not an inexpensive restaraunt, but in view of the quality of the meals and the service, definitely worth the cost of $220.00.
We would return when we are in Auckland and the opportunity arose.
C.
Excellent food! Really enjoyable. So happy I bought the meal ticket over lockdown to support them as well as Culprit and Apero. They also gave us we surprises with the meal including an amazing Dessert based on an Eton mess with rhubarb.
N.
Amazing dinning experience! Course after course I was licking my plate clean. I loved the variety of meats and different cuts. Great spot for intimate dinner that won't disappoint.
D.
Simply stunning. Wild game, prepared without pretension but with great care and skill. Started with a sherry, a plate of charcuterie, moved onto entrees, in our case octopus and black pudding ending the meal with hare and the best dish I've had this year, smoked quail. Excellent and informative service.
J.
My partner and i were fortunate enough to spend the first night of the traffic light system dining here - what a treat. Amazing food, wine and personable service. I couldn't recommend Cazador more as a place to celebrate a special occasion.
L.
Great food and wine selection, also the spirits were fantastic. The entire team from servers hosts and chefs were all super friendly. Highly recommend this spot.
M.
A new favourite of mine, even though this restaurant has now been around for over 30 years. Truly an institution of Auckland dining. I assume that they have an environmentally sustainable business model with game meat being the key component of the menu. We went for the feast option which was 5 courses and excellent value both in terms of quality and volume.
Service was good and though we did not sample any beverages I have heard from friends that the wine list is good.
L.
Totally epic menu. The venison was out of this world. Definitely order the Autumn Spritz. Service and knowledge of the staff was incredible!! We’ll be back!!
C.
Love this place. Fantastic staff that engage in conversation while I waited for coffee. Don't get me started on how good the coffee is or the cabinets filled with so many different pie fillings, Ruben sandwich mmm, so many deli choices as well. 👍👍👍👍👍
L.
Stunning food, amazing atmosphere and one of the best staff in Auckland.
If you love meat and great food this is a must to go. The chef nailed umami flavours naturally on brand new scale.
We had the bread, charcuterie pick and mix and both of us had main dishes with venison.
You can feel the love for the craft through every bite and you don't want it to end.
Also thanks for the complimentary digestive for my man's bday. We left very happy and content.
S.
The food was absolutely amazing. The service (Katie in particular) was great and super personable. Highly recommend this restaurant 😊
L.
Very special dinning experience. All cooked and presented to perfection. Decor will also keep you entertained. Highly recommended for something different and perhaps to push your comfort zone.

Our first dinner out since lockdown and a great choice to re-enter dining our. Cazador is a cosy place to visit in winter with lots of wild meat and red wine. I wouldn’t bother visiting if you’re vegetarian or vegan. It’s not that the staff wouldn’t be able to rustle up something for you, but in such a meat-heavy place, why bother.
We started with a shared charcuterie, which included wild boar salami from their next door deli, plus venison carpaccio and baked scamorza, which is a type of mozzarella. It was served with bread and all delicious. That was followed by venison mains, which I forgot to photograph, and finished off with a cheese platter and some pistachio ice cream. We were all full by that point but we couldn’t go past the cheeses, particularly a champagne brie and lovely orange-hued blue.
The service was personable, passionate and knowledgeable, which led us to try things we wouldn’t usually order. The anecdotes about the owner’s father who shoots wild game for the restaurant and mother who creates a rather potent palate-cleanser cherry brandy made the experience feel very inviting.
Lovely night out in a place I’d love to call my local if I lived closer.
R.
The menu and service are absolutely faultless - very unique offering serving game meats. Some may be apprehensive at the thought of unfamiliar meats but I thoroughly relished trying out something other than your standard beef/chicken/pork/lamb.
As an entree, definitely get the antipasto platter to sample different game meats which form the base of the terrine and parfait.
The hare was particularly tender and full of flavour, highly recommended! Pheasant has a very interesting texture, not easy to cut through and very bouncy and chewy but not soft (eg like bubble tea balls). However despite sounding like the texture would be horrible to eat, it isn't dry and tough at all and on the contrary is very juicy despite being very firm. The taste is similar to spatchcock if I remember correctly and also very tasty!
To top it off, the service was the most professional and knowledgeable I've experienced even across fine dining. The waitress didn't trip over a single word when informing us of the daily specials, giving recommendations and announcing what dishes were being served. So impressive!
The only thing that detracted from the experience was the stuffed animal heads prolifically mounted on the walls. It was certainly very odd and morbid but fascinating to be looking at the animals we were eating.. But for others it might put off your appetite! Not a particularly romantic ambience but very distinctive..
It does correlate to the speciality of this restaurant, but it can be in bad taste in this day and age to still keep stuffed animal heads, especially so many of them! Each to his or her own.
K.
Great staff....yet we paid 400 NZD for four people and the portions were really small...the dishes we'd shared would barely accommodate two people let alone four? The staff attentions to us was the only reason we'd not give this place 3 stars....for the money you're better off going somewhere else!
S.
One of a kind dining experience
B.
Attentive service and mouth watering food, paired with amazing wine and sherry suggestions. An excellent night out!
S.
It's official. After 4 months of lockdown, Cazador has topped my list! Everything about it is what my old fave Depot used to have. Innovation. Wild, organic food. Innovative menu without foregoing deliciousness of the past, and of simple food. I'm primarily vegetarian and it's the lushness of their offerings in this area that makes them my favourite place in Auckland. Also. Ambience that's created not only by the food and environment but also the vibe lead by the staff. Recommended!
S.
Fabulous 3 course dinner delivered to our home. Great instructions making it easy to serve. Excellent value as a treat. Nearly as good as dining in. Look forward to being able to do that soonest. Thanks to Cazador! Well done to our local! Sarah & Steve
S.
Visited on Valentine's night and tried the set menu. A very unique experience. I'd love to go back again and try their regular menu.
n.
I have to say this has some of the best coffee in Auckland!!
Friendly service too.
Thank you
T.
Came here last night with group of friends for set menu. The food was outstanding with a wide variety. Thanks Katie the waitress for entertaining our group with great banter, and amazing service!
C.
Initially spooked by the interior decor but quickly got over it with the insanely good food. Got to try a lot of dishes I’ve never had anywhere else and I think about them from time to time because they were just that good.
M.
Our go to place when we need to unwind and warm up with a wonderfully seasonal menu and sumptuous Spainish wines. The service is always fantastic, from booking a table to the last course and pairing suggestions are always exemplary. If you have the privilege of being served a broth from the kitchen you'll understand everything there is to know about the chief and his staff (we've been privileged enough to sample broths including wild boar to seasonal duck) 5 Stars is an easy offering but feel it should be more.
Love the open kitchen and being able to thank the kitchen at the end of every meal.
A.
Can't wait to go back for a sit down meal. Really enjoyed the BBQ lamb!
Great level 3 takeaways, very easy pick up with online ordering.
W.
Amazing food, very hospitable, love its outdoor dining area.
c.
Wonderful staff and service. Coffee and food amazing at the Cafe. I have also been to the restaurant and its even better.
A.
Cazador has been on our to eat list since forever and it did not disappoint. A nostalgic environment, beautiful food, an actual interesting wine list (hard to find in Auckland) and the most exceptional service. It’s gone straight to our top 5 best dining experiences and we’ll be ensuring everyone knows about it.
E.
Always a great experience. Great food, friendly and knowledgeable staff.
D.
We got all four dishes on offer this weekend, which provided a great curated whole meal experience. Love their level 3 approach of changing it up each week
C.
Nice little restaurant. The decorations are amazing. The food are nice.
P.
Love this place its a total gem of our community and the food and service is utterly superb 👌
C.
A treasured landmark. The most wonderful game menu in New Zealand. I was introduced decades ago and is always always always delicious. In fact I was just interviewed in DISH Magazine and said its my favourite place in Akl.
M.
We've been here for dinner a few times, the food and wine selection is devine, the staff are knowledgeable, attentive and the service is as fast or as slow as you wish. We definitely will be back again, check out their deli next door for other amazing items
G.
The food was delicious, but the restaurant was kind of dark and loud. It was also very expensive, probably worth it, but very expensive for very small portions. Almost like a tapas in serve sizes. The venison just melted in my mouth though.
A.
Thank you so much for a wonderful experience last night. Wonderful friendly staff - we had a lovely waitress who had just started work that day and an equally lovely young man assisted. The food was fantastic. So nice to have something different and delicious. Best meal we've had for a long time. The wine list was also interesting and we thoroughly enjoyed the wines we chose.
J.
My husband and I went to cazador a couple of weeks ago. (His first time eating there). Everything was so delicious, flavourful and considered. The wine list is fantastic and the service is relaxed, but professional.
Chocolate mousse is as indulgent as I remember!
A.
Let your inner carnivore out for a night of unrivaled indulgence. If you're going to sample the finest of Aotearoa's game meats there's simply nowhere or no-one who could deliver every course to perfection the way these guys can. They source the best, cure and treat it expertly, and then create dishes that let the flavours shine. Throw in the bonhomie of Mamie's kitchen and you have one enchanted evening.
D.
Bit spenny but good quality food and coffee
r.
Best of wild food, put it on your must do list
L.
I highly recommend the feast option. You won't be disappointed. Our hosts were very welcoming and super informative about each dish. We will be back!
C.
An absolutely stunning evening with friends, great variety of food and intriguing, perfectly matched wines, ports and sherries. 7 of us went for dinner on a Friday night and we all selected the set menu with drink matches. The service was great, excellently timed and the food was flawless and even catered for our pregnant friend. We can only recommend it, especially after we were told that this was a new set menu that only started the day before. The team made our night - thank you
S.
I''ve been coming to Cazador for the past five years or so and every time I am blown away. The food is unreal and the service can't be faulted. Last week my partner and I went for the Feast menu with the matching wine/sherry pairing and oh my goodness, it was incredible. There were so many highlights throughout the meal, that it is hard to pick a favourite dish!
E.
This is a place you can trust to get all the flavours right and everything cooked perfectly. I'm not particularly adventurous but that's not a problem at all. The venison is absolutely to die for, as is the chocolate mousse. Wine suggestions are always bang on. Be sure to book as they are often busy, even mid-week.
D.
Delicious, great service, quaint setting. Too embarrassed to take a photo of the food so I took one of the nice courtyard out back instead.
S.
Had dinner here to celebrate my husband's birthday. The dishes were all so good we couldn't pick a favourite. This food is special - it's interesting - we loved the venison black pudding - and delicious. Add the perfect service and the lovely ambience of the place and you will get an experience to remember. Very highly recommended - one of the best in Auckland.
J.
Been here a couple of times and it is very decent. They are always doing great food and I love the family owned aspect. The chef is very talented and I can tell they have a great team. Service is also really nice! I suggest ordering at least a glass of wine, charcuterie board, and one of their house made pastas.
S.
Great service & excellent food , highly recommended A+++
N.
I have never had a bad meal at Cazador. The seasonal menus that the chef puts together are fantastic, taking full advantage of the seasonal produce and meats of New Zealand. The sharing platter is not to be missed, which is slightly unfortunate due to how spectacular the set menus are. The drink pairings with the set menus are very generous, and absolutely expertly paired. If you see the Cazador booth out at a farmers market or similar, treat yourself to their outrageously good terrines, pates, and/or mousses.
P.
This is our favourite restaurant. It can't be beaten for the quality of the food, the originality of the menu, ambience and service. They have now opened a deli with packed with delicious pies, meats and treats and amazing coffee.
M.
nice atomospher. great meal. highly recommended!!
K.
Nice meals, didn't insult, but they are lacking something basic in terms of taste - a tad bland, think they needed some garlic and salt. The texture of the food was spot on though, very happy with that aspect. As to the authenticity of the meet being game.... To be honest the meat tasted like "wild" meat that you would buy at the butchers. The wine was very nice.
L.
We enjoyed the most delicious meal that we've had in years. The food here is exquisite and the service is exceptional. The waitress was very helpful with suggestions on what to eat and what combination was great. We had the charcuterie for 2 and everything was delicious and tasty, love the sausage and rillettes. My husband had the venison and I had the lamb shoulder, the lamb was melt in the mouth and super tasty, my husband tells me the venison was lovely too. Icecreams and chocolate mousse were also divine. I highly recommend coming here you will not be disappointed. It's very rare that we go out for dinner and enjoy every dish that we ordered but this is exactly what happened here.
C.
We wondered in without a reservation and they were able to squeeze us into a nice spot against the wall in the back. The service was efficient and courteous. We started with the Baba Ghonoush which was yummy with the pita but it didn't have enough bread. We had half left when someone came by to ask if they could take it or just take the bread plate but didn't think to offer us more bread.
We had the pasta and the rabbit for our mains. The rabbit was okay but a bit bland. The pasta was good but not fresh. The wine list was very good with quality selections -- the Bordeaux was amazing.
We passed on dessert because the starter and mains were very filling.
Overall the food was good and service was pleasant with a reasonable price by Auckland standards.
R.
It was a throughly enjoyful experience. Instead of picking something from the menu, I took the feast, which essentially the cook’s selection of the best things available. And not only was everything amazing, but it also came with helpful and detailed explanations from the staff. The matching drink package contained a love selection of Sherries, which I didn’t even know before how much I enjoyed. And although the individual portions of each dish were very small, it was just so many of them, that I was still completely full by the end.
S.
Incredible food, incredible service ,incredible atmosphere thank you SO much

Awesome game menu!
Didn't know what to expect...
Probably best meal I've had out in years! Friendly hosts with a clear passion for their food, with the owner hand selecting our wines to go with our meals for us ;) great service All round!
Fantastic wines, great entree charcuterie plate was perfect proportions and lovely flavours, a must! Mains were amazing and a killer desert and Turkish coffee just was the cherry! These guys have a real eye for detail and flavour.
Also a lovely little garden out back with heater tables and chairs and a cosy feel. Definitely just gonna pop back here to sample a craft beer and enjoy the garden one evening ;)
M.
First time here with frens too try the infamous Wagyu Pie😋😋while here thort I'd try the Pie of the Day😁😁OMFG soooooo good Chicken,Leek n tuffle also tried the Almond Croissant🥰🥰toooo die for will definitely be back here soon💯💪
B.
Awesome food. If you like game meat, you can't miss it. Very nice staff place has a particular decoration that is probably not everyone's cup of tea. There's a nice little outdoor area for drinks and a smoke. Recommended: boar for main and the chocolate mousse for dessert.
W.
Wonderful place with accomadating service tried the croque monsieur totally devine
A.
A very enjoyable and different eating experience. Not dishes that you have had before. And all very tasty and delicious. Service great not overly formal and nice quiet place to eat.
L.
I would like thank Cazador for a wonderful evening Friday night. Nicola in particular made the night. Her explanations of food and knowledge of wine were truly excellent. All food, wine and cocktails, outstanding. I would have no hesitation in recommending your restaurant to everyone.
J.
When we arrived at Cazador, which is our neighbourhood restaurant, we were at first offered a table that I was not too happy about. The staff member explained that the other table that I showed interest in was booked for another group. However, after a few minutes she offered to shift us to our preferred table which I thought was an excellent customer service gesture. This, of course, had immediately lifted my spirits and we settled down to an excellent evening of mouth-watering delights. They serve only about one or two plates of bites at a time. This gave us time to actually relish each bite. We started with the Venison bresaola, Duck parfait, Hot smoked boar & beer kielbasa sausage and the Heritage pork pancetta for the House made Charcuterie bites and for Entrées, we had Roast bone marrow, chimichurri and the Pan-fried venison black pudding. The Charcuterie bites and the Entrées served on saucer plates, were delectable. For Mains, we ordered two Pan roasted venison and a slow-cooked hare shoulder with some side dishes. The Venison was exquisite…..tender and roasted just right! We finished our dinner with Dark chocolate & brandy mousse and the Persian mess. The Persian mess was yum, delightful and something different. We were at the restaurant for about two and a half hours and we savoured and relished each course. We had an excellent evening and we will certainly be going back.
M.
Went for a wedding reception at Cazador. What a treat the staff were absolutely amazing and the food was Outstanding. Loved that Cazadors had an indoor and outdoor space which offered something for everyone. Thank you Cazador Fantastic!!
G.
When we went to Cazador I had heard great things about the place. I was most interested in the selection of game meats and the philosophy behind it. The little restaurant was homely, friendly and attentive. The food met all my expectations. It was delectable, so incredibly exciting and a real pleasure. I'd like a Cazador in Pukekohe where I live!
L.
Absolutely beautiful food, and fabulous service, the second time I've been here and I cannot fault it, party of 8 this time and we all throughly enjoyed ourselves!
C.
One of the best dining experiences I have ever had! From the freshly cured venison salami to the melt in your mouth lemon tart, all the food was prepared with love. The chocolate mousse was out of this world and the wild Hair was the richest meat I have ever tasted! Rebecca explained all the meals to us with a smile and even picked out wines to go with each course. Seriously, seriously, unbelievably fantastic!!!
r.
Family owned and run restaurant. Feels like a time warp stepping inside (in the best possible way). Staff are really friendly and hospitable. Really really enjoyed their cocktails, charcuterie boards and chocolate mousse (with extra salt sprinkled on top...)
S.
3.5 stars. Service was friendly but very slow. Took a long time for orders to be taken but once ordered, food came in good time. Food was nice enough and nothing to fault but portions were on the small side. We were asked to leave 2 hours after arriving as they had another couple waiting for the table. We are fine with a time limit but this was not explained at the time of booking. Most restaurants we've been to would tell you if there is a time you have to vacate the table by when you phone up to book, to give patrons the opportunity to decide whether they wish to take the table. So all in all, good food but let down by service.
P.
We were a group of 6 booked in for 6 pm. on Saturday , arriving on time and one of the first tables seated. We ordered drinks and entrees and these arrived around other groups entering. Our mains were ordered ahead of most other tables but others were served ahead of us. Not usually a worry except more than an hour later we were hungry and unsure of why our mains hadn't arrived? We were served for drinks , but no mention of our meals? Finally mains were served, but one was delayed due to a "Trainee mistake"?
It would have been helpful if a staff member had explained the delay rather than ignoring the situation.
The meals were 'nice' overall, but not hot and average at best.
It was obviously a busy evening ,but given reviews and hype we were all disappointed and would not reccomend Cazador . Auckland has many excellent Restaurants but Cazador is well down on our dining list.
A.
By far the best food experience I’ve had in Auckland!!! Amazing food and service!! Thanks to the whole team there!
S.
Another wonderful meal in Cazador, beautiful and interesting food, relaxed setting and charming staff.
One of the best restaurants in Auckland without a doubt.
M.
Great place in Auckland for those looking for game meats and offal. Adventurous eaters can enjoy tongue salads, or venison heart, but Cazador also features a vegetarian item of the day so not to leave the veggie eaters of the group out. Service was helpful and friendly, I recommend starting off with the rabbit rillette.
N.
Offally good! The kitchen shows respect for classic techniques, modern tastes, delicate balancing of flavours and, importantly, respect for animals, using all parts, not just the choice cuts, to serve up some tantalising creations.
It's a great place for a civilised lunch or a celebratory dinner, or just when you want some fine cuisine in a cozy setting.
It's well priced and well positioned. Promise to leave your preconceived notions of offal behind and you'll find flavours on the expertly prepared and always updated menu that are hard to resist. There's some fabulous familiar options on the menu too for the less adventurous, but that's not why you came here. Experience something classic made new and find culinary delights that you've been missing.
K.
driving Dominion rd we never expected to find such a gem .It was hard to choose from the menu and we all had to share as the food came out looking so tempting. Service was unobtrusive but on to it. and very knowledgable .
The food was delicious well presented . We will drive across the city to eat here again
wunderbar
J.
The food was tasty enough, particularly the venison, but the quantities were minimal, particularly the goat shank, which came singly and without vegetables. Even some potatoes would have supplemented the meagre fare Lamb shanks by one are a reasonable filler but goat's shanks are considerably smaller in meat quantity thus just one on its own is not enough for a normal man's appetite.
Disappointed diner
s.
You might be beguiled by this place's love of taxidermy, but from what I can see, this is a hipster set-piece masquerading as authenticity. Tiny portions abound (see what I did there?). The terrine is clumsily executed, the bread was scant, the venison main is ideal for anyone going into Ketosis, and the rabbit tagine was so cured it tasted like corned beef. Also: they didn't change the cutlery between courses. Unique food, but I left unsatisfied and unsatiated...
C.
Outstanding early valentines day dinner, if you love all kinds of meat... this is the place to be. Almost perfection and some best service I’ve been presented with. Thank you!
G.
A...mazing!
Great service, delicious food. Truly a one of a kind establishment.
K.
The cafe is a great addition to the local community, and the restaurant is fabulous for a nice evening out.
C.
Just when I thought the restaurant inspired my love for food and wine, they opened a delicatessen and it's a whole new world. Cazador is a favorite.
A.
A wonderful experience! Incredible and interesting food, and impeccable service. I love Cazador more every time I visit!
A.
Beautiful food and fantastic service. Highly recommend. Not pretentious, just good food and good wine
A.

We truly enjoyed and must visit.
Thanks Guys!
D.
Wow!!! The food, the service, the atmosphere, just wow!! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone!! We could not have had a better experience.
R.
Great quality food and good service
S.
Cazador is a game restaurant in Sandringham full of energy and buzz. Run by a couple who are vibrant and knowledgeable in their craft. Food and menu is great and a changing selection on the beer tap, which is usually something bespoke NZ. Stunning wee joint on the CBD fringe. Love it.
S.
Wow. When you enjoy cooking yourself the last thing you want when eating out is to be able to say, 'I could do better'. Cazador certainly pushes the 'how did they do this'.
M.
Fabulous coffee in the cafe
K.
Wonderful atmosphere, great food, fabulous service.
F.
Just divine food. We had the "feast" menu, which was great and had a cross section of all of their delicious food. Service, atmosphere, and food were all impeccable.
T.
Their quails are amazing!! Staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is nice. (Sometimes the food is slightly too salty)
M.
Best Boar I had in years. The food is really great and the wine menu is just fantabulous. Go Wild! Go there!
O.
Gorgeous. Absolutely Fabulous. Great meal I warmly recommand not to miss this wonderful restaurant if you go to Auckland

Small and intimate surroundings. Not for the vegetarian and will drop a vegan in their tracks. For the red blooded meaty types.
