Reviews of Dante's Woodfired Pizzeria

I really like the ambiance here. It's nice and relaxed. The staff was really approachable and helpful, and really seemed to care if we enjoyed the food and the experience. The food was pretty good and didn't take very long to come out. Definitely a place I would consider coming back to in the future.

Excellent pizza spot. Fantastic Margarita. Just the way I like my pizza. A nice stretch to the crust without over cooked crisp. Good neopolitan style

The best pizza margarita/neopolitana I have had in Auckland. One of the top 5 I have had ever.

My previous experiences at this place were better, but not the recent one. The food was alright. The pizza crust as told by the owner was "special". But, was put off by excessive intrusion into our dining by the owner as mentioned in the so many recent reviews. The staff behaviour appeared like we were dining Italian food for the first time and spoiled our dining experience

Restaurant recommended by a friend
The Prosciutto pizza is excellent.
I have never really worshipped a pizza dough in my life before but this one is really good !
If you are looking for an excellent place to eat a woodfire pizza, Dante's is the right place

If I could give 10 stars I would! Best best pizza I have ever had!
Being a pizza lover (this is my favourite food- we even have our own Ooni pizza oven), this is honestly the best pizza I have had in my life.
Very very tiny little spot, so best book a table.
Swiftly get your drinks (ice cold Peroni on tap) and the food follows soon.
We ordered the Con Prosciutto and Fungo.
Money well spent x100! We will be back and back and back again...

My partner and I were feeling like a day out so we decided to visit Dantes on a sunny mid day.
We had been a couple times so we knew the pizza is pretty decent (the crust is well done, and the toppings they use are good quality).
This time we visited and while I will say the pizza was again very good, I didn't care for the tomato caprese salad. It was all right, but it's just a normal tomato (vine tomato) and some mozzarella that was very basic. Anyone could make this at home. I was hoping for maybe some Heirloom variety of tomato and some slightly better cheese. It was like buying stuff at countdown and eating it at a restaurant. It's fine, but not when you go out to a restaurant that is meant to be this calibre.
I really did enjoy their pizza. This time it was better than before as well. The crust was spot on. Nice slight charring on the edges, great texture, and flavor. Before when we came it had been a bit too burnt, but this time it was right on point. Sauce also very nice.
I would give Dantes four stars if I was going solely on the food. However the customer service we found to be somewhat condescending and non-hospitable. For example, after we were first seated by an employee (possibly kitchen worker?) another employee who was the server comes over from his cigarette break (he literally was just putting out the cigarette when he walked up) and greets us. My partner didn't know he was the server so she made a comment as to say, "oh you are our server. we didn't know at first because you were so casual." Which we were both actually confused. He just gave us this look like he was so annoyed and put off by her.
So we order our food and as he is taking our menus away he makes sure to remind us: "Make sure you eat all of your crusts." I mean sure. I hate wasting food, and I love it when a crust is great (I did eat all the crusts BTW), but I don't need to be told in such a manner. It wasn't out right rude. Just not the vibes you want to be experiencing when you go out for a nice meal.
Anyhow, so we were paid up and leaving and I did want to compliment the pizza (give credit when credit is due), and I mentioned that I was also a chef, and his response was, "if you really are we will be seeing you here again." I was surprised by this comment because wouldn't he want to invite us back?
Bottom line is it wasn't the most horrible experience ever. It was just a let down since we don't go out much anymore (I cook mostly at home). Will definitely be a while before I would go again. I just think it's really important when in hospitality to treat your customers above and beyond. It seemed to me like they treated us like we should have felt privileged to be there, and it just didn't feel right.

The service is lovely, and the setting quaint. We ordered a pasta each, and although it fit the description, we both longed for a little something more. The sauces on both pastas were adequate, but perhaps lacked a five star depth. I just felt I could have made the pasta at home.
We THEN ordered a Woodfire pizza to go which was an 8/10.

i always loved dantes food, amazing stuff, hands down my one and only italian food. but i always did not enjoy the service of the owner. first time in takapuna we came in first and another italian family came about 5-10mins after but owner would not come to us at all and serve the italian family and chat with them for ages, i was on the verge of leaving. second time in ponsonby we were very full and had to leave half of the crusts behind. owner while clearing plates told us that the crusts are good sourdough material and then takes our left over, rips it open to show us inside of bread, and then grabs our finished spaghetti sauce and then dips the bread into the sauce and 'teaches' us how to eat it. very odd.

Probably the best carbonara I’ve ever had in NZ, pizza was delicious too. Staff are really helpful when you’re not sure what you wanna order, we also talked to the chefs for a long time as it was empty and they are really friendly and cool.
