Reviews of Ken Yakitori Bar
A.
Nice food for late night dinner, been here last decade. The ox tongue in the combo was always overcooked, otherwise everything was good. I noticed the hearty beef soup was more like a stew, it was tasty not too salty. Their chicken wings were one of favorite nicely grilled.
A.
Never a let down! Staff are attentive and friendly. Food is consistent and always to a high standard. Although the space is small , I thoroughly recommend this place
J.
Some of the best food I've had in years! Great service, delicious yakitori that look simple but are steeped in skill and craftsmanship! A real Food experience and one we will remember for a long time!
Well... We're back again. Still fantastic! Food and atmosphere are so good!
C.
Love this place so much. My favorite are beef tataki and cheese rice ball! The combo was real nice as well. Will definitely come again!
J.
Always love Ken Yakitori bar with fantastic selection of skewers. I always go for the combo as it's good value, tasty and get a selection. The beef tataki is also nicely dressed. I come here regularly! No photos as ate it all too fast.
b.
An unforgettable experience for Japanese barbecue in Auckland - I already want to go back right now as I am typing haha. The food and the vibe of dinning here remind me of my experience in Japan, I feel I was back in Japan. Our dinner is $40 per person, including a small bottle of sake and a glass of plum wine.
E.
This is one of my favorites place in Auckland to grab a warm sake during those windy cold nights. The food is to die for, everything is mouthwatering. I literally got into a food coma once I left this place. Staff members are attentive and always ready to help you.
C.
Went there in the evening time, lots of crowd, but the friendly staffs managed it well.
Tasty skewers with different variety of choices, chicken, beef, prawn, pork belly, yummy!!
Also there's side dishes like udon, beef tataki, all nicely done.
Has been running in this place for years and Japanese are still running it well. Highly recommended if you like Yakitori.
W.
Love it. Great food great vibe. Portion slightly small, will need to order more. Reservation essential.
C.
Cosy intimate spot, with authentic yakitori. The beef tataki was super yum there was a hint of spiciness. The sashimi was great, most memorable was the dark coloured tuna. First time I’ve had it. The smoky bbq flavours both the food and you 😋
M.
Was craving yakitori one night years ago and discovered this. Been coming here since then. Perfect for a night of drinking with friends. We love almost all the skewers, especially the chicken cartilage, we order it everytime but sometimes it's sold out. They give you free cabbage to munch on with free refill as well. Staff are friendly, good customer service. Prices are reasonable but be careful coz it could easily stack up. Highly recommended👍
P.
A good place to eat barbecue, went to twice, the first user experience is very good, serving food very quickly, beef tongue, corn, chicken heart are very delicious, but the second time to go, waiting for a long time, nearly half an hour, Fried chicken skin not delicious. The attitude of the waiter is not bad, and the interior decoration is very atmosphere.
S.
Best to always make reservations, very friendly staffs but since a lot of people coming in at the first 6pm reservation time all order at the same time, the hot foods will take almost 30 to 45 mins to come out. The chicken wing skewers are my favourite.
B.
My wife and I dined here, late on a Saturday night, after a concert at Spark Arena it was 5min easy walk.
The place was busy but we were quickly seated and provided Menus etc.
We loved it for its authentic Japanese look and feel. The food was excellent and so was the beer. Will be back again for sure.

T.
Food experience wasn't too bad. The chicken was a tad too crunchy and dry but the rest of the dishes were nice. Seating was limited and cramped here.
B.
Nice and clean. Food was awesome. My really enjoyed my first visit. Only one thing that hard for us. Just a care park.
M.
I have been coming to this place for 17 years and still absolutely love it! Food is outstanding & service is great. Highly recomended!
D.
Food was really good as well the service. Our waitress was really nice. Food price is ok. The only thing, this is a really small place, if you go in a big group you might have some issue in getting inside.
M.
We come here quite a bit, it’s always packed so one advice I’d give is come early. Best yakitori bar in town! I’ve vastly become a fan of this place!
D.
Great experience...Brilliant fast food. Service is excellent. Thoroughly recommend.
Y.
Yakitori was pretty good and kitchen menus were just okay. I kindly recommend to have many kinds of yakitoris as u want with your favorite drink , seems kitchen staffs doesnt really know how to serve foods in proper order so takes forever to have dishes from there and they also cook curry by instant solid curry from japanese supermarket which hard to blame. Dont forget this resto is yakitori bar not dumpling or curry store
still I gave 4 stars due to the fact It's really hard to find decent resto in nz
M.
Really good food, and friendly team. Difficult to find a table because restaurant is too small
l.
Haven’t tried all the yakitori bars in this city yet but definitely better than most places. Most dishes were delicious and the rest was still decent
M.
İt's very otantic place. Food is delicious but we ordered small sashimi and large sushi platter with other yakitori staff.they brought sushi and yakitori in one plate which is half covered with stones and sea shells. Sushi platter was $48 only 8 Sushi. Total rip off. Most expensive Sushi I've ever had. Only 3 stars because of cosy atmosphere. I don't recommend the food if you are hungry
L.
Ken is awesome, food is great, staff are friendly, atmosphere suits hanging around.....but it's kinda cramped.
c.
One of my favorite Japanese places. Fun atmosphere and can try many dishes with the small BBQ plates.
W.
Amazing authentic yakitori bar! Warm and friendly staff who can recommend you some options if you've never tried before. I highhly recommend Ox tongue, soft and tasty!
Definitely book as it can get really busy.
B.
Very Japanese style BBQ, you would be wondering if you are in Japan. Only missing is BBQ fish in th menu.
G.
Great selection of small plates of food. The staff were attentive, friendly and quick, you can't ask for much more. The karaage chicken was amazing and what made it even better was smelling all the delicious meat skewers being cooked over coals while we were eating. Definitely give this place a try.
A.
Great food served up late into the night. The skewers OMG.
A.
It has been our favorite place for 8 years ! Cooked on charcoal and served to you. Get some hot sake, karage chicken and make sure to try everything from the yakitori menu.
D.
Every food I ordered are amazingly good!!! Really enjoy the rice cake, okura wrapped with pork bbq and takoyaki! Service is really nice too🌝🌝
V.
A really good place to just chill and have fun... Do take a couple of your friends as the table for 2 is too small. Despite that the food is good and the fire under the udon pots is eye catchy.
D.
Always awesome!! So authentic and service is fantastic
H.
Love this place. Food is awesome. Yakitori
s.
One of the best Japanese restaurant and Bar in Auckland CBD. Food is good and atmosphere great
S.
Yum!! Delicious yakitori and great atmosphere. Also reasonably priced.
M.
This place is genuine and doesn't follow the rest of the Japanese restaurant offerings. It's unique delicious and busy. Busy because it's a superb place with a great vibe ! I can't wait to go again! Sagoi !!
C.
Great to come back to this place agree a few years and it always receive consistent food.
S.
Great little Yakitori place. Even has non-meat options.
C.
Authentic Japanese Yakidori bar in Auckland near by Auckland University. It is very cosy and crowded place at night time so very bumpy among customers and servers. However, all these atmosphere make this place more special and genuine from beginning to end of your dining. You should accept it only allow stay up to 2 hrs at busy night due to limit of tables and seats. But you will enjoy smoke taste from Japan.
P.
Amazing atmosphere. We were transported immediately to the yakitori bars and izakaya in Tokyo. A real gem in downtown Auckland.
H.
Love this place, chicken mince balls my favorute !
A.
Great food, open late, well priced with free cabbage, what more do you want? It's all cooked over a charcoal grill the smoke of which fills the restaurant. So good.
B.
The reason you come to Auckland from Wellington. Open till 1am - small, busy, and for good reason - great food. You feel like you’ve discovered a gem you would never find but in a bigger town.
S.
Very good. Authentic yakitori experience.
W.
Looks better than tasted / atmosphere is just right for chatting after work / quite hot inside / salmon and the beef are my favorite
C.
Normally I love this place but tonight the server always gets the order wrong. And my favourite part the free cabbage is so tiny had to ask for 3 refills, made us feel bad. Why so stingy? Cabbage is so cheap!
J.
My go-to-restaurant whenever I travel to Auckland, good food, fresh and cold beer, nice sake.
M.
Great food. Atmosphere - busy yet intimate, fun and friendly. Booths are cool. Only down side was a bit of drama when we wanted to separate the food and drinks on the bill. Would recommend this place tho.
D.
Awesome experience and great tasting food. Definitely close quarters and loud but lively atmosphere. The beef tongue and the hearty miso were my favorite. Service was fast and even had a call button for the wait staff.
P.
Just landed in Auckland, Just needed something to eat and a cold beer. This place delivered exactly what I needed plus more, cozy hole in the wall type atmosphere, happy staff great food, Try the spicy chicken - Hot ! but good. What a great spot. It’s a cosy small restaurant. We didn’t have a booking but were lucky to score a small table. We tried lots of different dishes and everything was delicious. Great find.
R.
Not sure why this restaurant got some negative reviews. I had a great experience. Seated on the counter, nice view and learning experience of the Japanese style bbq. Place was crowded but service was fast and always with a smile. Food was tasty, fresh and good quality; good selection of yakitory; not as many as you usually get in Japan but still a good variety. All staff rigorously Japanese complete the experience listening them repeating the food orders and greeting people entering and leaving the restaurant. Only one negative point if any: the bbq smoke in the restaurant. An effort to improve the ventilation hood will go a long way. Good. Nice job.
D.
I'll definitely be back! Some of the best Yakitori I've ever had. Top of my list for authentic Japanese cuisine in Auckland. Well priced and a good selection. Highly recommend the prawn and pork option. Nice sake available too.
A.
Great food and service, especially if you get the box seats. Good place for corporate things
R.
Food is really delicious, especially the hot sake is perfect for cold and windy weather in Auckland. The decor and the food is good. Please do make table reservation before you visit that place. It's generally open till midnight.
J.
Great food and good service. Very cool atmosphere. Unfortunately the serving sizes aren't huge (although I guess you could add some rice, dumplings, etc to bulk it out) so don't go too hungry.
H.
Nice food, and nice service.
B.
My fav Yakitori Bar! Small, cozy and fun. Very good food with plenty of interesting options, and very affordable! Great for a cozy couple or a group of 10. Highly recommended.
J.
Good vibe, great screwers, amazing chocolate sundae! Love it :)
C.
What a gem! We were given a great table with no reservation and blown away by the wonderful service. Big sushi lovers but first time in a proper yakitori place we were well impressed. Tried most of the menu and loved it! Got sushi and sashimi, of course, which were of the highest quality. The star of the show were the awesome yakitori skewers. Excellent variety and flavours. Great value makes it easy to try new menu items. Very kid friendly and simply superb service. Wish we had a place like this back in Ireland.
C.
Always a fantastic time! The food is on point. The service is on point and the sake is delicious.
K.
Food is good, nice ambiemt
L.
Very very good food and experience, even better at some place I’ve visited in Tokyo, so grateful that they exist in New Zealand.
A.
Probably the best yakitori bar and grill. The flavours and overall atmosphere brings you a true Japanese experience right in the heart of Auckland city. Service top notch, my favourite part is getting a seat right by the grill and watch the chef grilling away those awesome looking skewers. Worth a try if you are into Japanese cuisine.
T.
My favourite go to place for a delicious yakitori. With a hot sake, the night can only get better. All the dishes are delicious but it is a bit pricey.
V.
This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in Auckland. Good environment, amazing food, kind waitress. My top choice is hot sake. Hahaha
A.
fantastic food and service! place was absolutely packed so you definitely know you're in the right pace. The $14 special for the yakitori is worth a go, fried garlic was interesting and actually tasted fantastic, the takoyaki was great, and the karaage chicken was crunchy (although it didn't come with any sauce which is a shame).
J.
Always a great date night at Ken's. All of the servers are super nice, and it's mesmerizing to watch the yakitori chef work their magic... oh and the food is super delicious too.
U.
Ordered sushi and took over 1.20H just for few pieces and in a sushi train it takes like 1.5 min to get your favourite 🍣! Slow and food is ok but the skews are delicious! Some people were kind and gave us some refunds it’s not a bad place to go but it was a bit nerve wrecking because I was almost late for a concert because of waiting!
J.
This is the real deal for yakitori and for an actual Japanese bar experience. Exactly what bars are like in Japan. They have a range of drinks from high balls to Japanese beer.
Food is delicious. I highly recommend this place check it out if you want an authentic experience.
N.
Great spot. Cost without being oppressive and busting even on a Sunday night. Friendly service and ice cold beer.
M.
Fantastic food as always...experience tainted by ridiculous 1 bill per table policy wouldnt even split $1200 bill into 4 ...
Z.
Great traditional charcoal skewers. Probably the best and most authentic option in Auckland.
G.
Another night at Ken; about once a season. They're very busy so I suggest reservations, which by the way, may be timeboxed like a 2 hr seating guarantee and that's it. While you'll spend a lot for a little given how it's mostly little skewers to share, it's good at least which is the whole reason you'd go. Karaage chicken for the non adventurers is good to even the fried octopus balls, beef tongue and other skewers are surprisingly good too despite what unfamiliar food it may be to some. Beer on menu is very basic as expected but get the sake instead.
L.
The best Karaage fried chicken and beef tataki in Auckland
E.
Try Yakitori combo, karage chicken and cabbage(free of charge) with miso mayo dip.
Z.
Authentic izakaya experience. The (free) cabbage with dip is interesting. Definitely try chicken gizzard and cartilage for something different. I'd say to stick with their skewers.
R.
Always a big fan of Yakitori and this place has good vibe.
A.
Great place for quick food and a beer or three. Great Yakitori, with a good menu. The smoke from the coals and the delicious cuts roasting above them creates a great atmosphere. The staff are all japanese fo it's just like dropping in a yakitori plave in shibuya or shinjuku
J.
Always love Ken's. Got worried when they disappeared from the old venue. Awesome, tasty food. Comes out quickly. Some of the best beef tataki in town.
I.
Been there a few times before but tonight was exceptional, best experience there yet. Very friendly staff, every dish was perfect.
F.
We enjoyed Yakitori here and also their Japanese beer
G.
Great food, relaxed atmosphere, great service and pretty fair prices.
K.
The skewers here were superb, best I've had yet. Shame Sydney doesn't have places like this.
We ordered the 5 skewer special with tap beer and individual skewers after.
Probably about 4-7 skewers each will fill you up.
M.
Small but cozy place. The Yakitoris are tasty but only comes 2 per portion. Open until very late and Sundays too so always a safe choice.
S.
Always delicious, friendly efficient service . Highly recommended, 15 years on still consistent. Nice to be able to trust a restaurant to deliver quiet or busy.
M.
Busy little place on Anzac up the hill a bit. Went there with my GF a few years ago, then found it again after a bit of effort and a few misses. Free cabbage and good cold beer. Busy at times. Be prepared to wait or make a reso.
T.
One of my favorites Japanese hidden gems! They are always full, always! Try beef tongue or chicken hearts - it’s well cooked :)) my fav: beef sirloin, prawns wrapped in bacon, broccoli, beef capacio (not sure how to spell it:) and chicken Katsu.
G.
We came here for dinner and it is a fantastic with amazing tasty food, the real deal for a Japanese bar experience, we loved it. The staff were friendly, and the food was perfect.
S.
If you want to have some Japanese "Izakaya" (Japanese style bar) experience in New Zealand, Yakitori KEN is recommended. They are a "Yakitori" (skewered chicken) bar but they have a variety of menu of food and drinks. I felt the atomospher was real Japanese style izakaya. Let's try it.
D.
Was advised of this place.. Hard to find but fantastic yakatori and other delicacy’s.. highly recommended!
C.
This is our favorite place to eat. It is a little pricey compared to how much food you get but the ambiance and atmosphere is always a pleasure and the staff are incredibly friendly. The food is always incredible and the karage is the best around.
R.
favorite place , we go there every couple of weeks always good food and service, food is delivered quickly , nice beers, can be very busy
C.
absolutely a delight from aesthetic and friendly enthusiastic greeting (with attentive service) to spot on dishes and bbq chef grilling right behind the bar. took another reviews advice on the fried Camembert; brilliant. ignore the ketchup and dust the chili pepper on instead. udon noodles are fragrant and delicious beautifully presented in a cast iron pot over burner. grab an Orion and cold sake to follow; kanpai!
S.
Delicious yakitori and some tasty daily specials. Small plates as expected but high quality and cooked in front of you. Recommended!
R.
Best Yakitori bar in AKL! I wouldn't go to the other places now. Would've been 200% perfect if they have more sake brands with proper sake grades like other yakitori bars in upper queens str. or K road.
C.
Great food and atmosphere, a real Japanese experience. I've lived in Japan for a year and recommend Ken as one of the most authentic restaurants on offer in the city.
M.
Cool authentic feeling place. Food is good although servings are small and it adds up really quickly. Spent $70 here for one!
M.
Quite a small menu and a bit pricey but the quality of the food itself it excellent and incredibly tasty. Staff are kind and professional, and the setting feels very authentic.
R.
Youran Weng is clearly an idiot, Kens Yakatori is fantastic.
How pathetic that Youran is so stupid they don’t know what they ordered and complained they can’t split payment...pay attention and don’t just be a complainer. You clearly are an entitled millennial who has nothing better to do than moan, life’s not perfect idiot ...deal with it!!!
You must have a very unhappy life if this is how you behave and try and tarnish a great restaurants reputation because YOU ate your friends food and are too stupid to use online banking if spiltting the bill!!
Get a life loser and stop complaining.
I been going to Kens for years and they run a fantastic business for 20 years, you don’t stay in business that long without doing a great job and having loyal customers !!!
N.
Still great 10 years on! - Fantastic skewers with amazing smokey BBQ taste. Fried Camembert and a beer or two are a must. The chicken and pork belly skewers are smokey perfection!
P.
Tasty charcoal bbq skewers and other Japanese dishes. This food goes down nice with a beer. Been going here for years for casual dining.
D.
Great atmosphere, pleasant staff and delicious cuisines. Best for pre-dinners or late snack, otherwise, it's too pricy for a full dinner outing.
J.
Awesome restaurant, great atmosphere. Get the Rice ball, try to get a seat in the chainsaw room!
K.
6 out of 10. Like the beef tongue but some other foods aren’t fresh.
K.
Our all time favorite is their beef miso and chicken karaage. Order their miso Mayo dip too - great dip for the cabbage and kaarage.
C.
Good food :D
S.
You could say plenty about the venue... lots of wood, it's a bit dark, etc. But that would miss the point - the Yakatori is a specialst cuisine and if you want the best go, at your earliest convenience, to Ken Yakatori Bar. Watch the Sake, it can s neak uo on you all of a su
M.
Fantastic place, great service, brilliant food. I had a really good time eating here and look forward to coming back.
O.
Great food and service as always.
P.

K.
Yummy food, open untill late. Can be quite busy so better to book a table. Parking is takes time to find.
G.
Tried many of their dishes and everything was delicious. Was cool seeing the chef cook everyone's food as well.
G.
Yummy Wasabi octopus and yakitori. Almost as good as the Izakayas in Japan
G.
It was great. Busy by 6.30 which has to be a good sign.
A.
Love it every time.
n.
One of the best "O.G." Japanese Yakitori restaurants in Auckland. About as close as you can get to the real thing in Japan. Recommended!
R.
Good food and the personnel is really welcoming! The udon and rice with curry is great, but you should really come here for the skewers!
P.
Very authentic Japanese meal! The food was delicious, and the wait staff very friendly, however, was difficult to communicate with and pay for the bill
P.
Service is seriously outstanding, food is absolutely devine and the sake is pure heavenly
S.
My wife and I came here for dates. It was our first time back since our two year old was born, and she learned to use chopsticks here!
M.
Great Japanese food. I went with work friends, wasn't sure if it would be my sort of place, but I really enjoyed it.

L.
Best place to have late dinner and drink! Good service, authentic food!

Yummy fried chicken and fast service. Tight dining spaces but it gives the feeling of an authentic Japanese izakaya!
L.
Feels like an authentic Japanese yakitori bar - friendly staff, warm atmosphere, a good spot for pre-concert/event drinks

(Translated) Although the restaurant is small, it is good to feel authentic Japanese atmosphere in New Zealand. There are many Japanese people, but there are many kiwis. Special portion skewers are particularly good and overall excellent. I did not think about the price.
(Original)

(Translated) A popular Japanese izakaya in the city.
The store is not large, but it is always busy.
Yakitori is complete and there is also sashimi.
There are many classic menus, and they are all delicious.
We recommend fried chicken and broccoli.
Orion's beer tower is spectacular

(Translated) It is quite rich, has good service and varied dishes (in addition to cheap prices). For a small restaurant and Japanese style, it is quite nice. They treated me very well, they were quick and gentle.

Es bastante rico, tiene buen servicio y platos variados (además de precios económicos). Para ser un restaurante pequeño y de estilo japonés, es bastante agradable. Me atendieron muy bien, fueron rápidos y gentiles.

(Translated) Very delicious little shop, one or two friends after work, relax with a pot of shochu. Very authentic Japanese barbecue, highly recommended beef tataki.
(Original)
非常美味的小店,下班之后一两好友一壶烧酒放松心情的好去处。很地道的日式烧烤,大力推荐牛肉tataki。

(Translated) The 13 RMB package is very good and has always maintained the standard
Disadvantages Inconvenient parking and closing time is not allowed
Must be positioned
(Original)
13块套餐很好 一直保持水准
缺点 停车不方便 关门时间不准
一定要定位
