Best Japanese restaurant we had in Auckland. The food is delicious and they are even offering delivery services now! The experience we had at the restaurant has always been awesome. The home delivery option was perfect, the only thing missing was the lovely staff ;)
H.
We ordered from Mobi2go. This is my best! We can buy cheaper more than normal order!
I really loved they made sushi and wagyu dishes.Great stuffs and fresh meal !😊👌
H.
Super nice price and dishes. I love the place, quite warm and cozy. The sashimi was fresh and delicious, the grilled salmon was superb. The cream cheese matcha cake is a must-try. It's not ordinary sponge cheese cake but a piece of matcha cheese ( Yup, a whole piece of matcha cheese, not cheesecake, I'm not wrong ). I would definitely come again after the lockdown.
S.
Best Japanese I've had in Auckland and I have been to many places here (and Japan). Definitely will come back once Covid restrictions are gone to pair my Wagyu with some beer and sake 🍶
G.
Quality Japanese cuisine hidden away in downtown Auckland.
I chanced upon this restaurant while looking for a place to eat not too far from the water front.
The menu looked good and the service was friendly.
Lots of choice with the standards of Japanese cafe eating. I opted for the chicken curry which was delicious. Generous serve, lovely chunky curry sauce and pickles and salad were served on the side.
Full I was not able to try the desserts but will be back to try them.
Staff were very kind after misunderstanding of what credit cards they accept. Amex is unfortunately not one of them.

I ADORE Mad Samurai. The food is always fresh and expertly prepared, and the service is warm, welcoming and appreciative -- even via delivery. I look forward to seeing the girls again in person! Thank you for the sweet note on my paper bag! Support this wonderful place, Auckland. Every bit of the price is without question worth it. Love you, Mad Samurai :)
M.
The decoration and atmosphere of the Japanese restaurant is cozy. We enjoyed the service of Waiters and the flavor of food, but the tempura is not crispy, also, the pawn is not fresh enough. Overall, I recommend you try it.
R.
Warm and cozy place with really good service. The deep fried food was a bit overcooked but overall not bad.
K.
A must try!! The meals were absolutely amazing and we loved getting to try the wagyu it was a really cool experience! Every dish was so so delicious and so fresh and also really beautiful. Not to mention each course came out so fast! The restaurant is also situated in a cool little Lane and the staff were so happy, professional, lovely and kind. I can't wait to go back!

I’ve always come back to this place since 2 years ago. This place always makes me very happy. Cozy atmosphere, great service and amazing food. I wish I could give them 10 out of 5 stars! I strongly recommend Mad Samurai. I’m sure that this place brings a big smile on your face whatever your mood is!

A hidden gem in a small arcade of Auckland. Beautiful and cosy place to experience a reasonably small list of Japanese dishes —and I say small as a compliment here.
The service was exceptional with the waitress being very polite and smiling and making sure that we get what we need. Time between order and service was reasonable for a place serving freshly cooked food.
The pork gyoza was deliciously cooked. The chicken katsu was crispy outside and juicy and tender inside, with an aftertaste free of frying oil which is one of the usual challenges with fried poultry. Extra points for the wonderful mix of mayonnaise and wasabi!
We really enjoyed our lunch. Thank you for your hospitality. Highly recommended.

My partner and i often use our date nights to go to our favourite Japanese restaurant on Durham Street West (Kushi), however, they have recently relocated to Hamilton after 10 years. We happened across this small establishment after searching for a new place to eat and were not disappointed. Staff were lovely and food was amazing. We will be back again.
L.
Best Japanese curry that I’ve ever had in AKL and the sushi here was super delicious!! Ordered prawn avocado rolls and Mad Samurui rolls, both were yummy. And warm sake just made the night lovely:)
J.
Our first visit to Mad Samurai to celebrate our daughter's birthday. What a delightful eatery!! Lovely ambience, very attentive & friendly staff and the food was delicious! The menu is not huge but what we ordered came out well-presented & tasty. The sashimi/sushi platter was very fresh and generous portions. A great night out!
S.
Great food.
Our go to Japanese in Auckland CBD.
Clean, fresh flavours.
We just rediscovered it going for a walk this evening....at Level 3.
We would really recommend that you give them a try.
Y.
It's the first time to visit this restaurant with my family. Foods are nice in a fair price. We specially enjoy Platters (Sushi & Sashimi, and Mad Samurai Meat) to share. I recommend to try this for your first time visit!
J.
Service was okay other than the fact we needed to ask for water, but one of the dishes and two of the knives didn't look very well cleaned. Prices are okayish being upper 10s to lower 20s but the portions were really small, not very filling at all. The food itself was just okay without it being anything special. Not somewhere I would probably go again. It was only decent because I used Zomato good to get better value out of the meal.
E.
Thank you for the fantastic dinner ❤️ everything was perfect
T.
We stumbled across this place by absolute chance, and we were so glad we did. The food was divine. The fish was super fresh.
We had the Edamame, which was delicious. The salmon and avocado rolls were amazing. The vegetarian dumplings were delicious, but the Tuna Sashimi took the cake!
I hope this place continues to thrive, because I definitely want to come back.
G.
Wonderful food & service!!
We went here for lunch, it has a great atmosphere, and very friendly and helpful staff. We had the okonomiyaki and wagyu steak strips, both very nice. The wagyu was so delicious we ordered a second serving. Lovely people, great experience. Thanks!
N.
Reasonable prices, great warm attentive service, great selections on the menu.
Dog friendly ( outside only ) highly recommended
M.
Amazing food in a laid back atmosphere. The staff were great and the dishes were fantastic. Add Mad Samurai to your "must try" list. Next time I am in Auckland I'm definitely coming back.
N.
The loveliest Japanese restaurant I've found in auckland. Tucked away in a little lane, with a jazz band playing just in front of you. Both our options for lunch were tasty and filling.
J.
We enjoyed the beef salad and tuna tataki. Nice cosy restaurant and the staff was friendly. We didn't order too much as we weren't too hungry but will try their mains next time.
G.
We came here for a work lunch, I ordered the vegetarian set.
The food was great, I especially liked the variety of vegetables for the tempura!
The sushi didn’t have seaweed but had a rice paper wrap - I really enjoyed both.
The miso spout didn’t have any taste and I would have been disappointed if I had ordered it seperate (in this case it came with my meal).
Everyone else in my group also really enjoyed their meals :)
I was a bit disappointed as my meal came out 10mins after everyone else’s but they were very busy so this may been why.
Also the sound of roadworks was very loud in the alley where we were sitting, obviously Mad Samurai can’t control this but if you do notice roadworks going on, ask for a table inside to avoid the noise during your meal :)
J.
Great food, atmosphere and service. This was a quick meal but every bite was delicious. Highly recommend the salmon sashimi, chicken karaage and shrimp tempura.
A.
Fresh fresh authentic sushi and sashimi. Awesome flavours and welcoming service. Right next to La Fuente in Snickle lane
J.
Love this place, especially the lane is modern, however, can be quite windy, we seated inside, (ventilation need some improvement as it's open kitchen can be quite stuffy), Japanese service, very attractive and accommodate, special lunch set menu available, reasonable price, good food, had Mad Samurai sushi set and remen, very enjoyable.
A.
Amazing dinner. Don’t be afraid if not busy as food is still fantastic. Dined on a Monday night and only 2 others in the restaurant and everything was great. Sashimi, gyoza and perfect tempura
W.
The food was amazing and the service was great. Albeit the prices are high and the waiting times even higher.
H.
One of my favorite places. Even during lockdown they still keep the takeaway up to a very high level. Well done guys.
T.
Awesome place! Good prices and generous servings. Food is super tasty too!
C.
Top quality Japanese food at surprisingly good prices.
The staff were friendly and the location is cosy and central
A.
I’m a regular customer but never got a chance to write a review for them. It’s a hidden gem in the middle of Snickel Lane with a friendly staff (especially Heloísa, service manager) high-quality food and great service. I highly recommend this place for anyone who is looking for a Japanese cuisine with a Kiwi twist. It’s definitely a must go!
S.
Delicous modern/fusion Japanese. Great flavours and nice atmosphere. Specialises in Wagyu - but I tried other options
L.
Yes! Love the Food especially the wagyu beef burger 👍 one of the Best in town! The Bun is special n the Minced Beef is so Juicy 😋 A Must try dish, the Bento is very Good too as it has a variety of most of the dishes served in small portions. The price is reasonable with d Quality of food served n they have interesting Sake 😍
K.
Amazing friendly service! Went here for restaurant month with my partner and the food was really good as well! Would definitely come back :)
K.
Super friendly staff. Great food. Clean , fresh and delicious!
A.
A little part of Japan in the heart of Auckland CBD.
Amazing Japanese restaurant, where you can find a wide range of dishes, perfectly prepared in a cozy atmosphere.
P.
I'm so glad I discovered this restaurant. My favourite restaurant in Auckland, I come here every week. The meals are very reasonably priced for what you get, they are always very generous with portioins. The staff are very professional, friendly and welcoming. Great atmosphere. I don't have one bad thing to say about them. Would highly recommend.
M.
One of the best Japanese cuisine in town. Excellent options and reasonable prices on the menu. One not to miss include the Karaage Chicken, juicy golden and tender pieces of crunchy chicken in a mouth-watering wasabi aioli sauce. If you are after a delicious sushi, the Sushi Sashimi Platter is definitely one for the foodie bucket list. Nice environment and welcoming team.
O.
Nestled in Snickel Lane in the heart of Auckland CBD is Mad Samurai, bringing together the best of New Zealand produce with authentic Japanese culinary methods!
Their key standout is their Waitahi Wagyu Beef, locally sourced and farmed in Canterbury - tastes absolutely DIVINE! The beef melts away in the mouth and is super tender, yet holds onto flavour very well (especially a nice smokey taste)! Their Fried Chicken is also AMAZING - couldn't get enough of it! Succulent chicken pieces covered with well-seasoned batter that is crispy yet thin - YUMM!
Their Bento Boxes are also amazing - very high quality and served very fresh! You get a taste of all the best things of Mad Samurai for those!
I have also seen spectacular photos of their Sashimi Platter!
Service is beyond this world! Very friendly staff and managers who are genuinely passionate about Japanese cuisine - it makes a huge difference!
Would highly recommend Mad Samurai!
J.
Mouth watering Karaage Chicken & miso in a neat little lane. Would definitely return if I'm back in town.
S.
Good hip Japanese place with fresh sashimis, degakus, and authentic gyoza. Great Japanese service, customised umeboshi for my taste. I would visit again and recommend to add Japanese skewers to the menu, which go well with drinks. Arigatho gozaimasu 😊
J.
Nice Japanese food, run by Japanese. The food tasted very close to what I had in Japan. The environment also very Japanese style.
C.
Great place with pretty awesome vegetarian options. Chefs are actual Japanese :)
R.
Mad Samurai offers a wonderful gastronomic japanese experience, from the relaxed and chill atmosphere, with great music, really friendly and welcoming staff, great sakes and wine options (and if your are not satisfied with their wine menu they can even offer you options from the wine shop beside the restaurant). They have an open kitchen concept and it’s such a nice experience to watch the two japanese chefs working so friendly and professional. Easy to say that it’s a lovely place with great food and great staff! I definitely recommend for first visitors the share platters! The Mad Samurai Meat Platter if you want to taste their awesome wagyu meat, or the Sushi and Sashimi Platter.
O.
In fairness I only had a beer and a couple of sides here. But it had a good vibe and waitress was welcoming and had great service. We got the Vege chips and karage chicken. Both tasted on point but the portion felt a little underwhelming. But will come back for a better review.
O.
Very nice Sashimi but ramen just soso. I hope to have a good experience next time.

The best Japanese in Auckland, Fresh, Tasty and well presented. Great and amazing staff/service. Definitely would recomend as a go to place for lunch and dinner.
I.
I've been there last week with my girlfriend. We ordered Sushi and Sashimi at lunch time. Both of them were just 20 bucks. Sushi looked like bigger than other Japanese sushi restaurant. So fresh and color was also amazing. Even Wasabi and Soy sauce were good. I guessed Soy sauce is Amakuchi Shoyu. Which means sweet taste, light taste Soy sauce. Anyway awesome place to go. If you wanna try some real Japanese food.
N.
I had the beef stew, nothing special. Felt like I paid $30 for a $15 meal, salad looked the same as what I would have bought from countdown for $3 for a full pack. Didn't have much flavour. My friend had teriyaki chicken, presentation was nice but for $21, it came with no rice. Who serves teriyaki chicken with no rice ? And to add a tiny serving of rice, it was $3. Waitress took forever to come take our orders. Food took forever to arrive, even though they didn't look crazy busy. Maybe the kitchen was small. Two stars was for the overall dining experience relative to price and one star extra for the free miso soup while we had to wait. Tokyo club in Ponsonby have similar pricing but food and service is much better.
T.
Fantastic, delicious food and attentive service. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and highly recommend.
S.
We love this place. Always great food and vibe.
A.
Amazing fresh ingredients fantastic service, smaller portions but definitely still worth it.
S.
Very decent Japanese restaurant. Karaage here is THE best fried chicken you can find in Auckland, or maybe entire NZ. Definitely worth the money.
M.
Just went here with two of my friends for lunch. Absolutely LOVED the Wagyu steak, the steak sauce in particular was delicious. I will definitely be back, thanks in large part to the amazing service provided by Heliosa and Miki. Really appreciate it <3.
D.
Nice place, good service, food was well presented but the fish tasted a bit bland to me, not of the sea.
H.
Great happy hour time! $6,50 for tap Asahi and wine, I’ve been there a couple times with friends and we love this localiton! Food is yummy, especially the wagyu courses, and staff is really friendly too
J.
Checked this place out after finding a GrabOne deal. Delicious fresh sashimi and noodles, cool space with indoor/covered outdoor seating in Snickel Lane, and nice friendly people. Online reservations easy, it wasn't hard to grab a table early on a Friday evening but it got busy later on. Will be back before long for some more sashimi.
A.
Just discovered this gem! Delicious japanese, huge portions for really cheap, made super quickly and really friendly staff!! I’ll def be back for lunch break takeaways and dine in dinner dates!!
B.

The food here is superb !
A.
An awesome little place. Went there with my wife for dinner, reserved a table beforehand, and arrived an hour earlier - our table was already prepared for us. Ordered dumplings, chicken, sushi and salmon. Everything was exceptional, especially the salmon! Only thing - the desert ice cream was on a weird plate, so as it was melting - it started dripping on the table. Otherwise - everything was super good. There was an amazing jazz music playing form a neighbour restaurant, the staff was super friendly and welcoming. We are definitely coming back here!
C.
