Reviews of MASU by Nic Watt
J.
Had a fantastic time celebrating my wife's birthday. Ordered the Tokyo platter which did not disappoint. Presented in a gigantic oyster shell layered with generous layers of fresh, delicious sashimi. Highly recommended for both quality of the food, ambience and service.
W.
Great restaurant, great service and great food.
Upon arriving at Masu, we were seated at the bar where we could order our drinks and look at the menu as our table was getting ready.
We decided to get the degustation Masu Shook meal, which was a fantastic tasting of the selection available at Masu. We also added the king crab leg as it looked amazing in photos.
The first three courses which consisted of their raw fresh seafood were divine. There were so many complex flavours in the taco and the maki roll which I really enjoyed. The veggie tempura was executed perfectly. The gyoza along with the sauce packed a punch and it was something I had not experienced elsewhere before. The teriyaki salmon was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was not overbearing.
Our last main course we had the lamb cutlet and kumara was probably our least favourite, while I found my lamb good my partner found his a little over. One half of our kumara however, was really undercooked in the middle and so had a unpleasant texture and bite to it.
The king crab leg was absolutely delicious, it looks stunning visually. The meat is quite easy to get out of the leg and the smoked wasabi like butter that accompanies it is delicious.
Overall it was a pleasant experience with the exceptional seafood being where Masu shines brightest. Will definitely be back again.

This was an amazing way to spend Christmas Eve! We were able to talk and enjoy the freshest sashimi and plates! We ordered 2 dozen oysters and thought that would be enough but they had the most beautiful flavour and we needed to order more! Beautiful food, friendly caring staff and beautiful atmosphere- Thank you
S.
Masu has become my new favourite restaurant. Best salmon sashimi I have ever had in my life 🤤 and our amazing waiter Keng made our experience extremely enjoyable!
J.
Masu is about as good as Japanese gets for Auckland but if I’m really honest it’s probably overpriced for what it is. That being said, they do some nice fusion that’s unique to Masu and the service is great. It’s not a place I regularly frequent because I know of other establishments in Auckland that are just as good for half 1/3 the price but it’s still a nice treat from time to time.
H.
Reviewed based on eating restaurant months twice. Masu offered a delicious japanese food. The sashimi was fresh and reminded us of our live in Japan. Desserts was also very nice, although last year dessert was so much nicer compared to this year. Unfortunately, the main course was a bit of a let down. It was great, but not amazing. Service and drinks were great as well.
C.
Could not fault this place if I tried. Best Japanese in Auckland hands down. Food impeccable, the service top notch. The staff here are second to none, thank you so much team. Have to mention the fresh towels in the bathrooms !
L.
We had the Shomi set menu.
Pros
Excellent service - one of the best I've come across.
Food was very nice and well presented.
Great atmosphere.
Just the right amount of food to feel full but not bursting.
Cons
Most dishes were hot and spicy. Even the lamb had a hot sauce over it.
For the $$$ I expected the food to be at another level.
4 stars as the lovely waitress arranged to swap out the spicy stuff.
M.
Beautiful decor, stunning ambience and very authentic Japanese cuisine. On a cold winter night we got a cozy table at the sushi bar near the charcoal grill. Was beautiful and toasty seat. Will be back to try the cocktails and deserts.
A.
Nice food. Nice presentation. Not traditional Japanese. More Westernised fusion in its style of presentation. Enjoyed the Tokyo Platter. Pork slider and soft shell crab slider were also good. Service was efficient, polite and informative. We enjoyed our dining experience.
M.
Nice ambiance, great service ,friendly staff & the set menu was all yummy, nothing to fault ,we all enjoyed the experience
M.
I have been here many times. It is always sensational. My partner is gluten free and at Masu they pay particular attention to ensuring you are delivered gluten free dishes and sauces that taste and look fantastic. Tonight I had the set menu. The pacing and selection was brilliant. Service always 5 star.
D.
No doubt, Masu showcases fresh and fantastic produce. The minimalist approach to food prep should not however equal a lack of generosity, and is certainly not reflected in the aggressive pricing. Overall the addition of mediocre and disinterested service unfortunately contributes to the general feeling of disappointment and being slightly ripped off. Many small suburban Japanese eating establishments take greater care of their food and customers and deserve your patronage! Pretty desserts tho..
M.
Authentic Japanese restaurant, great ambiance, great service and delicious food. Even gave us a small gift for our anniversary. 🙂
D.
MUST TRY !!! Only came here for cocktail and dessert but it took me a different journey of how to experience food! Everything was very well balanced and really delivered the story of combing the Japanese and NZ culture. The pavalova had so many interesting textures and the balance of miso and the sweet pavalova really balanced the dish beautifully. The passion fruit lover cocktail was absolutely amazing, the perfect amount of burnt salted caramel that really cuts the tartness of the passionfruit! I would come back again for the actual food, but the cocktails and desserts were 10/10!! Service and atmosphere also 10/10!
D.
Great place for dinner, excellent service with attentive polite staff. Beautiful food that came out quickly. Quite pricey for the serving size but the atmosphere and service made up for it.
N.
It’s our fav special date restaurant. It’s pricey but the service and food is incredible. I enjoy the set menu as everything is amazing and I like trying out different foods. Their lamb chops are to die for and please please please order their drunken mojito.
A.
Slick, well managed restaurant with some amazing food options. Beautifully presented dishes which taste incredible. Only reason for going with a four star rating rather than five was the price - this place is great but you do pay for the privilege.
M.
Excellent food and service. We really enjoyed everything. Its a must try the aged sake.
X.
All of Masu's meals are delicious!! The raw fish ingredients are fresh, but not very good value for money. The emperor crab hotpot is super super delicious, every time I go must point! The soft shell crab sushi is surprisingly tasty. His steak is also excellent, and the Japanese steak sauce is surprisingly delicious. It's the best Japanese food in New Zealand.
K.
Best restaurant in NZ.
The staff are incredible, the service phenomenal, the food and drinks exceptional. We love the culture in the venue, the overall experience is just amazing!
Can't wait for our next visit!
S.
First time at Masu tonight and it did not disappoint! The food was absolutely amazing and being someone that doesn’t typically like seafood, I was blown away by their prawn rolls.
The cocktails were to die for, we had a number of different ones from the menu and there wasn’t a single one we didn’t adore!
The staff we’re absolutely awesome and really accommodating too.
Definitely check it out if you haven’t been before, we’ll be back!
G.
Overpriced, overcrowded, too noisy. Food was nice but pricy. The decor was nice but it's too crowded and very noisy. You will need to yell at each other for chatting. By the end of the meal, your voice is lost.
J.
Returned to Masu after last visiting 3 years ago because of one dish I could never forget. Miso Black Cod was so good I knew I would have to return the next time I was in Auckland. It didn’t disappoint. Expertly prepared this dish is up there with any seafood moment, utterly delicious.
R.
High end bar, and dining experience.
I had the oysters and wine.
Beautifully decorated inside with a cherry blossom theme.
Oysters were fresh and tasty.
The staff were very polite, helpful and professional.
A.
Amazing food, everything was delicious, best Japanese in Auckland. Staff all lovely. Delicious cocktails as well. Worth every dollar spent!.
J.
Was chokka, but service held up. Staff could be more proactive, and I would have had another hot Saki. Fresh Wasabi was nice. Make sure to book early. Full of beautiful people.
V.
The excellent food! Really beautiful and tasty. I was really surprised how perfect is each dish. The fish is super fresh, I tried salmon make and bluefin tuna. Absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend the black code from Robata grill, the taste of fish perfectly combines with citrus miso sauce. The desserts are really good also, I tried tofu and chocolate pudding (they making pudding from scratch). Both desserts were really good. The staff is friendly and explaining everything even before you ask the questions. Also, it was the first time when I tried sake and it was really helpful that you can ask for advice based on with which food you want to pair it and which tastes do you prefer. In total I really enjoyed this experience and I definitely will come back. Also, for dinner I highly recommend to book a table for better experience.
H.
Masu is average.
I go to a lot of eatery places cheap or expensive in and around Auckland.
To my surprise this place was no better than takeouts.
Alright maybe it wasn’t that low but in terms of fancy places and names.
It did not live up to expectations at all.
I had a lot of things around the menu too.
Tuna was above average by a little but could have been better
The Chashu Pork was delicious and up to standard
Other things I tried on the menu weren’t unfortunately , Quite disappointed.
The Sake was not up to scratch either.
I genuinely was dissatisfied but I did not complain when asked because im not a karen
Z.
didn't get many photos but the dessert platter was presented incredibly, staff was super nice and friendly and the food was so unbelievably good. highly recommended!
A.
Ive been here a couple of times, and MASU is outstanding I have had a birthday there and they brung out some ice cream saying happy birthday, the food is just so good and not to mentions there creative amazing cocktails, its in a perfect sport right in the heart of Auckland and will always visit here when in Auckland
C.
The service was outstanding and the food, pretty and tasty.
Highly recommend this place, it looks awesome inside and you can see the chefs cooking away.
A tad on the expensive side - but a must have experience.
Go check it out.
J.
Exceptional service tonight at Masu, one of the best experiences in Auckland off memory. Felt like we were back in Japan and on holdiay with how good the food and service was tonight.
You cant go wrong with the Shomi set menu, the highlight was definitely the cheviche tacos.
Great variety of umeshu cocktails rounded off the evening.
This might be our new favourite spot in the CBD.
J.
Amazing service, atmosphere & food! The menu is so vast that we struggled to decide what to order... so, we told our waiter the maximum we’d be willing to pay for dinner for our group of five, excluding drinks, and let the chefs decide on the selections for us to try! They just kept rolling out the options as we’d finish them. Such an awesome, spontaneous way of dining. Every single item was spectacular & unique in taste and beautifully presented. Not a single complaint from anyone in our group. I was worried we’d leave without being “full” or that it’d be expensive, not the case at all. We all left satisfied & it was actually very affordable!
A.
We booked in on Valentine's day. We were greeted at the door and was seated promptly. Our servers were very friendly and helpful in answering whatever questions we had. We ordered the Masu Shomi menu as well as 2 Raikou drinks. Food came out at a very steady pace. They were presented beautifully and were all super tasty. Price point isn't too expensive for what you're getting. Highly recommend this experience :)
S.
So so so good! Every single dishes tastes great. Excellent service as well. Better reserve a table ahead of time since they’re super busy. 2 hours eating time per table.
s.
You can taste the crisp loving in the food. The time taken on the meal, service and the ambience of the whole place is evident from your first step inside. I love the perfect mix of professionalism and kindness so few places have this down like the crew at Masu! One of the few places I gladly call from my hometown.
K.
We had one of the set menus and the good was devine along with the service. The waitress even told us she was going on break and introduced us to a new waitress. The shashimi and the salmon were absolute highlights along with the desert platter. I'll be back here again for sure.
V.
Amazing...hubby took me here for my bday 22 Dec, food was amazingly fresh and flavors and aromas created a fantastic meal experience. Also taking a seat along the long seating area so you cant watch all the food prep was a nice insight to the prep and effort involved in food arriving to plate.Fantastic service and the bathroom was very nice like a mini spa room. When they found out it was my bday they brought out a happy birthday dessert on the house! Highly recommend this restaurant! Excellent eats amazing service and ambience!
S.
Went here for my birthday and had such a great time!!! The food are really delicious. I don't usually eat red meat, but the lamb melted in my mouth easily. As per every fancy restaurant, the portions were on the small side compared to the price. But recommended to go for special occasions with friends and family. They would also accomodate you if you have specific dietary needs.
A.
Delicious!!!!!!!! This is a must if you are in Auckland. Near the base of the Sky Tower and is such a lovely spot! Great food and great service. All great, sushi, sake, desserts was all fantastic! Eat everything and order extra kimchi 🥰🍣
V.
Love the crab leg, all materials are real fresh. They don't have any udon though. Waitress is a bit loud but very thoughtful and recommended good drink selections.
A.
Dining at Masu doesn't disappoint! We came for a relaxing Sunday lunch and ordered cocktails with the Tokyo Platter. The Tokyo Platter was a combination of fresh sliced fish, nigiri, oysters, scampi and half a New Zealand crayfish served sashimi.
Beatifully displayed over a plate of ice.
Of course, rather than order more savoury food, we opted to share the dessert platter.
Service was friendly and attentive. Food was delicious and a lovely relaxing vibe.
C.
We went here for our anniversary booking a week in advance and still only was able to get an 8 pm booking, so very popular. Though we did turn up at 7.30pm thinking maybe we can just get a cocktail at the bar though our table was ready. Awesome.
Food comes out very well presented and the service is excellent. You have to try their cocktails they are always good here. Its a great restaurant for a fun evening whatever you are celebrating. The plates are smallish and you can just order some then order more which is a great way to try different options.
M.
The food was beautifully presented. Unfortunately the taste just wasn't there. For the price being charged, we expected a taste explosion. Instead we walked away disappointed.
S.
Best Japanese place in Auckland by miles 😍🍣🥟 Fresh, expertly prepared sushi, sashimi and hot dishes. It's a little pricey but worth every penny. Just delectable! Warm, professional and dedicated staff, beautiful surroundings, upscale yet relaxed and vibrant atmosphere, and (most importantly) heavenly textures and flavours.
K.
Went here for husband's birthday and it was such a treat. Food was great and atmosphere was comfortable yet fancy. They bring you a hot towel to start with, the service was great. Really cool how they gave us a mini dessert with a message. When booking a reservation make sure you select the occasion to make it a little special. Highly recommend
A.
Lovely food and a nice place. I dined alone and asked for ‘a sparking water’ I got a 1tr bottle of it plonked in front of me and they poured a glass…. Totally wasteful as I only had the glass!!! I said to the waitresses as I went to pay they should ask the customer if they want a whole bottle but I didn’t mind paying…. I got massive attitude from the waitress and the lady behind the front desk… they glared and took it off the bill. They ruined the experience for me!! Awful
A.
Love this place, we have been a few times and it is always delicious!
Try and save room for the dessert platter because it is amazing!
J.
Great service and very good food. This time around, I recommend the shellfish miso soup which is a steal at under $10 imho.
The house spiced umeshu was excellent. Sashimi is always fresh.
Only thing i would not ordder again ia the Beef tataki - too much going on with lots of dressing, could not appreciate the beef which is supposed to be the hero of that dish.
Otherwise, always a pleasure coming to Masu.
N.
Delicious Japanese cuisine inspired by tradition. Loved the ambience, food, service and sake. Had their tokusen tasting menu, was devine. Every dish was well thoughtout and well executed. Service was friendly and ambience was lovely.
S.
Great food, you won't regret what you order. Something about chicken was too salty for me but over all beautiful food. Each table seems to have a territory for each table staff n I don't know if they get any extra money for what the customer orders but someone was slightly too pushy as we noticed when we changed the table. But we had a beautiful night n we will certainly go back there again
N.
Great food and absolutely amazing cocktails. The service was top notch. Highly recommended.
N.
Great service and quality of food. Be prepared to spend a bit of money but I would still highly recommend the food here. We ordered 6 dishes and 2 drinks. Crayfish taco, softshell taco, manuka smoked fish rolls, prawn drumplings, teriyaki salmon and black cod. For both fish dishes, they were evenly cooked, moist and so soft! I thoroughly enjoyed them and the rolls had the subtle manuka scent that pleasantly surprised me. Tacos were both nice too but for me, personally, I really enjoyed the fish dishes the most. We told the staff that we had a birthday and they provided a surprise dessert which was a nice touch.
M.
Fantastic service and delicious food.
Sunday yum cha is a great way to sample a lot of the menu in one sitting. Take a seat at the counter to see the talented kitchen team at work.
Good selection of drinks.
Recommend a visit, hope to coma back again.
Edit: the staff also made a point to check if there were dietary requirements so if applicable to you, you will be well cared for.
T.
I just loved sitting at the bar and enjoying a tasting menu. I was in Auckland on a trip and felt totally happy as a solo diner perched amidst other business people as well. The food was amazing and of a high calibre.
A.
What a wonderful experience. We ordered the Masu Shomi and would definitely recommend. Food was beautiful. Ambiance superb, as was Liam, our main waiter who was nothing short of amazing. His efficiency was second to none. We advised we needed to leave at 7pm, and without feeling we were rushed we left exactly on time. Thanks to you all for a lovely start to our evening.
S.
Special place to eat. Beautiful food great staff lovely cocktails. Dined twice recently 1 before theater and they accommodated us with only an hour to dine and was faultless. 2nd large gathering of friends for evening made special by service and food. Lovely to move to small bar out front to finish evening off.
Highly recommended
F.
Fantastic experience all round, from Service to Food to Ambience You easily lose track of time, that’s how good it was for us. Only one minor hiccup regarding our mains coming out 15-20mins a part but our server didn’t miss a beat, he noticed what happened and apologised for the inconvenience and tried to rectify it ASAP & kept us informed. Would definitely go back.
A.
Great service, food choices excellent and great attention to detail. Had the $99 set menu, which contained everything our table wanted.
K.
Upmarket contemporary Japanese cuisine.Great food. Real fresh sashimi and great dessert platter. Great service too and Kids friendly fine dinning restaurant. The rib is definitely a stunner!
T.
Masu has been my absolute most memorable dining experience of 2017! The restaurant itself is exquisite looking and the staff are exemplary in service excellence. And all of this is eclipsed by the superb cuisine. Dish after dish, Masu reminds you how wonderful life truly is!
m.
Outstanding resturant. Don't go here looking for a cheap meal you go there for presentations and freshness. Fantastic presentation and the quality of food is very high. The location of the restaurant is fantastic with parking in Skycity and make sure you get your parking ticket validated for free parking
Z.
Had dinner at Masu, and I have been confronted with a complicated menu, which probably stems from the Japanese culture it’s trying to showcase. The fatty tuna sashimi has been particularly nice but over priced and pricing not clearly explained. The beef from the robota (Japanese grill) was tasty however. We had very devoted staff and the quintessential New Zealand wine on offer.
N.
Had the set menu. The food is excellent; probably the best Japanese in Auckland. Excellent service, especially our waitress Mari.
M.
I think you’re more paying for the name and atmosphere. The food is fresh but nothing special. It makes for a great night out with a group of friends and not too loud for business meetings. The service has unfortunately dropped drastically. It all feels very casual now as compared to when they first opened. The waitresses come across pretentious rather than friendly. I even thought one was a patron due to her behavior. It’s a tight maze getting through the tables to the washroom and I was surprised to see waitresses did not stand aside for customers to get through, instead, the customers gave way to the waitresses but not a courteous “thank you” or smile in sight. I was walking when a waiter spun around and accidentally bumped into me. Naturally, I said “sorry” but he just ignored me.
J.
We went with the $88 set menu that basically steps you through the best parts of what they have on offer. Absolutely incredible experience with top quality food and service. Well worth the price.
l.
Always amazing. Food is to die for and the staff are fantastic! Love going here. Highly recommend.
I.
Beautiful restaurant and food! Service was lovely, and the food was fantastic albeit a little expensive. The pork sliders are to die for and worth every penny. A well deserved 5 stars.
A.
We went here for a Sunday brunch which is a buffet and you have the option of going in at different times. The food was excellent. The sashimi cuts were great and fresh. Service was amazing and the staff was knowledgeable. Requires booking in advance. The brunch is 68NZD pp and it's worth every dollar spent.
J.
Great food with a casual atmosphere
We went for the 6 course Shomi menu with the beverage pairing. Would highly recommend to experience what Masu has to offer. Coupled with a generous amount of alcohol, it is a recipe for a good time.
Given the quality of food and dining experience, the bill was on the higher side though expected.
C.
My favourite restaurant in NZ. We always come here on special occasions i.e. birthdays, anniversaries...
The food quality is excellent, beautiful presentation and professional service.
H.
The sashimi we ordered were fresh and soft. King crab was good, the black cod with the sweet miso grilled is a must eat in this restaurant I highly recommend. Together with the wagyu steak, everything melts in the mouth had an awesome experience here
A.
Highly anticipated but didn't quite meet expectations. It was a Friday night and we got the tasting menu with a Greywacke Chardonnay. We were there to enjoy oursves but left underwhelmed. Sorry bout it. Maybe next time it'll be worth the spend.
V.
Great food! One of the best salmon dishes I've ever had. Highly recommended.
A.
Wonderful service and staff, and fabulous food! We went for my husband's birthday on our honeymoon and they made us feel very special. Delicious and unique dishes with wonderfully balanced flavor, and an overall wonderful night. Thank you, MASU!
W.
We chose this place mainly because of its fame and awards). Unfortunately it did not live up to our expectation (later we read that Masu stopped receiving awards recently and Nic Watt seems to be focusing his energy to new ventures). Masu was way overrated. It’s very expensive and we wanted to have a sample of everything so we tried its sampler. Obviously many people thought the same and had the sampler menu too, and the food was made like a factory assembly line. The food lacked character and made without much thought to it. Food was ok but no nice surprises and do not live up to expectations of a top-rated restaurant.
M.
An extensive menu serving more traditional Japanese dishes like sushi and sashimi, as well as Robata (grilled) dishes. Overall I prefer the Robata dishes. My favourite is the smoky lamb cutlets served with gochujang (Korean chili sauce). My biggest disappointment is in the quality of O-Toro served to us - it's was full of tendon.
v.
Incredible Japanese restaurant, many options on the menu for every palate, including two tasting menus. We had the cheapest menu (around NZ$90 each) and got to try things I probably wouldn’t have ordered - one more delicious than the other. The food presentation is also really attentive. I also liked the atmosphere at the bar overlooking the road, where we hd some cocktails before sitting to eat. I would go back again and again to try more things.
A.
Amazing restaurant with amazing food. There is plenty of choice in the menu, the staff is super helpful and super quick. The food is just as u expect - delicious, and the deserts are just superb. A bit pricey of course, but it’s definitely worth it.
A.
Delicious and tasty food. One of the most friendly and lovely restaurants to dine in. Loved their lamb and sashimi meals. The food presentation is excellent accompanied with a great dining atmosphere. Loved dining here and enjoyed the meals very much ⭐️
J.
Upscale fusion Japanese style restaurant, food presentation is amazing, we ordered Sashimi Moriawase (chef's selection raw fish), very fresh and thick cut, wasabi freshly grind at table when sashimi serves, small dishes MASU soft shell crab a must try dish, is my favorite, red miso soup serves with dry prawn, wakame, spring onion, so delicious, prawn tempura is a bit disappointed, too oily which cover the freshness of the prawn, we ordered 100% japanese black wagyu beef, most premium dish but turns out bit underwhelmed, very chewy. Cocktail is also must try their fusion sake mix, very tasty. Overalls, very enjoyable experience but prepare a wide wallet to come for dinning.
r.
Do yourselves a favor and order the black cod.. it is godly. I’ve eaten fish my whole life and had so many different seafood dishes, this one takes the cake by far.
Also service is amazing. Great atmosphere. All around great restaurant.
V.
We have been to Masu so many times and every time it feels this is the first time we are dining here. We celebrated milestone here so it must be the best place! Right from phone reservation to entering Masu, taking seats, ordering drinks, choosing food, service everything is just amazing. And dessert you have to go there to enjoy it! Just wonder how do they maintain such a perfection. Man, hanging your jacket is an experience on its own 😄. Thank you Masu we are your returning customers so... we will return soon!
A.
Japanese fusion spot in Auckland. Huge cocktail selection. Food is meant for sharing.
- Good food though not a wow. Details by dishes below
- Sashimi – the salmon was excellent. Others (tuna, Hamachi) are ok.
- Maki – had the spicy tuna and eel – both are good though not amazing
- Kimchi gyoza – ok / standard good
- Broccoli rabe side – cooked well and the spice provides a nice contrast though wouldn’t necessarily it goes well with the broccoli rabe
- Cod fish – grilled well but the fish could be a tad bit fresher
- Tempura scampi – the tempura flakes is a very fine alternative, which was interesting though I like the original one better.
- Dessert of chocolate pudding with green tea powder and umeshu ice cream – the pudding (English style i.e. similar texture to a soufflé) was very good but the ice cream is a bit light on the umeshu flavor
- Service a bit slow / inattentive – had to call the servers a few times but overall decent
- Would recommend.
C.
My friend and I had dinner at Masu last night. The food are truly amazing! The tuna and salmon tartare is one of our favourite. The clam is super fresh and tasty! And we love the dessert!
R.
My friend took me here for dinner for my birthday. She let me choose the restaurant and since I hadn't been here and had it on my list it was the perfect opportunity! Lovely service and tasty food - I'd def. go back. The kitchen was kind enough to send me a birthday message which shows how attuned staff is to customers. Very impressed!
E.
Beautiful dining experience. Extensive Saki menu and great service. We had a set menu and the dishes were exceptional. The only minor downside was the acoustics in the restaurant are a bit harsh but we’ll definitely come back next time we’re in town!
A.
This place is amazing and a great place for a special dinner out. Our out of town guests were impressed with food and service.
C.
Miso cod best item on the menu. Other items we had were ok. Have had much better for less $ in hole in the water Japanese places in Toronto.
A.
Very pricy fusion Japanese with exquisite presentation, good service, excellent sashimi, brilliant cocktails, and merely reasonable everything else. We had the $120 set menu for our anniversary.
The quality of the non-sashimi dishes was disappointing for the high price point. Yes, presentation was extraordinary, but I want flavors and balance to match. Drinks are staggeringly expensive, even by Federal street standards. Overall, a better $200-300 meal for two can be bought at many other places, even within the Skycity precinct!
C.
Beautiful atmosphere and food. Everything was served in a timely manner and wonderfully explained when needed.
D.
It was a wonderful experience, excellent food and warm service. It's expensive TBH. I might think twice next time when choosing a Japanese restaurant.
N.
Hands down the BEST Japanese restaurant in auckland. Amazing food with high quality ingredient. Efficient seatings. Attentive and knowledgable staffs. Great atmosphere.
C.
The king crab leg and the lamb cutlets were absolutely sensational. The red miso was also beyond our expectation. The sashimi was on par, but I’d say go for the medium size as the large one was way too much for two people if you want to have all the way from appetisers to desserts. Staffs were friendly and well trained as you would expect from a place like MASU. Not so much of a authentic Japanese cuisine but a great fusion experience.
T.
Busy restaurant, which is usually a good sign of things to come! We stumbled across this place and decided to check it out - and were not disappointed. Attentive service, gorgeous decor (cherry blossoms hanging from the roof) and delicious fresh food, we ended up eating there twice during our trip to Auckland. Would love to see some Japanese gin on the menu next time for a truly authentic experience!
M.
Still waiting for the main memu, the sashimi is good, is fresh, the food is good. But when the cost is like this, you definitely thought it could be better, fresher.
(Main menu came, ta-da~)
Just now I was hesitating about three stats or four stars(mostly for the service is great without doubt). After the main menu came(shown as below), better, a little bit. So four star.
The dessert is great!!! I change into five star!!!
K.
Service and food always great. Portions a tad smaller on the $75 sashimi plate but beautifully presented. Always a nice vibe the miso cod is always a fave
C.
Great fusion Japanese food, good service, $190 for this 8 dishes from entree to main, baby pork rib very good, beef steak is juicy and tender, king crab leg was alright. Beverage range from $ 10-25
S.
Beautiful fresh and tasty oysters with a slightly different but delicious garnish. Attentive and friendly staff. Warm and inviting atmosphere. Will be back for a full meal at some point.
J.
There are lots of really good Japanese restaurants around town, and it's easy to overdo it, or worse, ruin it with fusion food. We've been to Japanese fusion cuisine that totally destroyed everything good about the food itself. Masu on the other hand manages to keep an authenticity with their dishes but at the same time be a little creative with the flavours and presentation to set themselves apart from the others, and not to mention the great atmosphere and service which may even past for a fine dining experience. We've been to Masu a couple of times, and recently for the crayfish set lunch. The set comes with some sushi, crayfish tempura and a salad bun. It's a good portion for lunch and justifies for the value. It's an interesting choice to include a bun instead of rice but I suppose it works for being fusion and it's filling. The staff is also attentive and patient even with a crying 5 months old baby at times.
J.
Phenomenal experience, stunning food and cocktails. Wanted to order everything off the menu but settled on sushimi, tempura, eggplant, and lamb cutlets, along with the pavlova for desert. The sorbet cocktail 😍
A.
Very, very nice environment with an incredible interior design, very friendly staff and a unique sensory experience for those special celebratory moments where money is less of an issue... The dishes are a collection of very good to less than average (check out the pics). We ordered quite a few dishes and only one or two were wow moments matching the ambiance of the interior space however the overall experience - taking into account how the kitchen kindly sent a birthday cookie and icecream out as a surprise - was one of very positive. I'd recommend it so check it out for your next special moment if the price is within the range
R.
Some of the best food and service I have had in a long time. Everything we ordered was delicious and done perfectly. The grilled king salmon was inspired. The service was incredible. Every detail so well executed. HIGHLY recommend Masu.
F.
A truly exceptional experience, each course was immensely satisfying. Simple food done well, complex dishes astounding. Highly recommend the beef fillet (rare) and also the ceviche tacos. A meal worth travelling for.
J.
Highly recommend, brunch with all you can eat sashimi, various cooked food, and order one main with desserts
R.
Amazing food! Customer service is really good. Waiters care and respect your food habits in regards of your religion. Food presentation is artistic. Price was reasonable considering the location.
B.
Such a treat! Amazing food and drinks complimented by very knowledgable staff. Will definitely come back.
C.
Wow. Its like your are eating art. The crab legs are mind-blowing. Great wine list to match.
J.
Food was so good! We had a shared platter experience but everything was delicious
S.
Impeccable service and food as always, waitstaff were absolutely fantastic. Flawless evening, thank you all.
L.
This is the best restaurant in Auckland. The food is honest. It is presented unpretentiously and carries a very rare depth and harmony most chefs will never reach. The service is warm, kind and efficient. The dining room is like an elegant aromatic cocoon of comfort.
The dining room was full but did not feel crowded. On what I would consider a “busy” night, the team was confident and never appeared to be under pressure.
It was a pleasure dining here - we are looking forward to returning for the tasting menu in the very near future.
A.
The food and service is great. I've been there several times and always top notch 😊.
S.
Love this restaurant. recommend booking so you don't miss out. Good for vegetarian and vegan meals. Fresh and delicious. Desserts are amazing too.
R.
Great accommodation for food allergies. Sushi was probably one of the best in NZ but not as good as Vancouver, Seattle or San Francisco.
A.
Of all the restaurants that keep popping up around Auckland, Masu is still my go-to and fave. The chocolate cake is totally worth the wait!!
P.
Nice food, although I found a few things a little spicy for my liking. Also the restaurant was not very busy but we had to wait for a while even for a simple bowl of white rice. The waiting staff were friendly just not that on to it for an upmarket restaurant.
S.
Wish I could give Masu 6 Stars! Sumptuous Japanese food - presented artistically - highly recommend the Antarctic Cod
J.
This is one of the best restaurant I've visited. The food, service, ambience is superb. The decoration is not your typical Japanese restaurant, it's modern but homely. The menu is extensive, sushi, sashimi, hot food from the grill, yakitori, desserts, everything is yummy. The eggplant ginger miso and lamb cutlets are a must try! And for desserts if you have to choose only one, it would be the chocolate pudding with matcha. But if you can't decide, whatever you choose would be great. You can't go wrong with this restaurant. The service is quick and excellent. I've enjoyed the dining experience though a bit pricey. Good to try the yumcha on Sundays. This restaurant is highly recommended.
Y.
Amazing table service, super friendly staff. The place seemed very busy, but did not feel like service was affected at all. The quality of the food here is INSANE, all fresh and well presented. A little pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. There was not a single dish I did not enjoy. I just wish I had a bigger stomach to eat more.
j.
Amazing service, amazing food please pass on thanks to servers and chefs 😊
J.
What an amazing degustation of sashimi, maki rolls and tempura.
Added an awesome experience to the night that I asked my girl to be my fiance!
Would completely recommend!
L.
Loved it, great atmosphere, very fresh seafood.
A.
Expensive but worth it. Exceptional service, food was fresh and very tasty. Would like to try their tasting menu soon
C.
Never get disappointed at this place, great food and great service (apart from one staff is pretty rude at us when I told her my allergy, just that one bad rat)
D.
Great Japanese dining experience and way above your typical sushi
Y.
Great service and good food. A little bit noisy but the main point is the price. I don't think it's worth well by evaluation from all aspects of this restaurant. I suppose to accept if the I will get 20 percent discount.
M.
Masu is a "sure thing". We come to Auckland for a "Night Away" and Masu never disappoints. In fact, I have been about 50 times and I am still blown away by the wonderful and consistent quality, excellent service and just ..yum yum yum. Keep up the consistent awesomeness and quality.
J.
Must experience this restaurant, fabulous service and food is amazing! We had no booking but was made to feel so welcome and found a spot on the bar which worked out nicely. Fantastic food and great service as always... one of our favourite restaurants in Auckland. highly recommend this place
J.
I cannot fault this experience! Minsook, our waitress was super informative and friendly. The food was delicious and worth the higher price tag. Incredible cocktails and really cool to watch the chefs and bar staff while they create their craft
D.
Exquisite modern Japanese cuisine in a fabulous setting. Amazing local wine list. Wait until you see the ice!
C.
Went there twice, but menu was all same. They should develop new dishes. But dessert is always delightful.
H.
Make sure you book early in advance but if you go early, may often get a table at the door. Expect it to be relatively expensive.
D.
Absolutely delicious and friendly staff
M.
Amazing food, friendly service, beautiful environment.
J.
I loved it! Enjoyed a few courses of small meals, washed down with a few glasses of delicious NZ Sauvignon Blanc. Will definitely be back to try a few more!
E.
Saw a lot of good reviews and we decided to try Masu’s Sunday’s yumcha,(thought they have yumcha buffet but nope) everything is quite exp and their selections of food are very limited @@ we order lots of rolls loll. Chicken liver’s sauce is good but itself is fishy and we couldn’t take it :(( dessert wise...matcha layer cake is not good. Might try their dinner/lunch options next time.
W.
Very enjoy my birthday dinner. Can't forget the amazing Tokyo Platter, which is huge.
r.
This is a total experience. Service was professional and genuine, with excellent suggestions on choices of courses if you require it. The food is exceptional both in quality and presentation.
B.
My all time favorite Auckland restaurant. Wagyu is awesome.
A.
We, couple who love Japanese food, have always enjoyed Masu over the years. Long live the memory of baby chicken, moist towels and forever topped up waters. Last time we went, both service and food was sliding. We put it down to one off. This time, a year since last visit, we were left unattended by our waitress throughout. I called over the maitred in an attempt to sort this, but she just took our order instead. Then we ordered drinks from the server as empty glasses sat there for 15 mins without refill. Drinks took another 15 minutes to arrive. Lots of items werent available and knowledge of the drinks menu was poor, infact we were told that "people dont really order this" and so it wasnt available. Food was more western than usual. Even the sushi rolls werent what they used to be. No awareness of staff for poor service. As we paid $250+ dinner, i explained the situation and was given many sorrys. I don't like sorrys over solutions. TLDR: Go to Azabu.
杨.
Very fresh fish and delicious dishes.
E.
We had a great dining experience. Two of us, out of a small of three, had certain dietary restrictions and preferences, which were all accompanied for with ease and we were very grateful for that. Service was excellent and so was the food (we did a tasting menu).
A.
Incredible food, environment and service. This is a must for anyone in Auckland looking for a good feed
S.
Nice Japanese cuisine.
V.
The food was absolutely lovely. It is quite pricey but I dont mind paying for good food. This was my first time here and the only negative was my friend got a reasonable sized bone in her Black Cod dish. We informed the waiter who just looked at us and said " Ill tell the chef". We heard nothing more about it. That was disappionting. The overall experience was great and would go back.
C.
Great experience . We came for a dinner celebration and found a bone and scale in the sashimi we ordered. After feedback to the waiter, the chef came to thank us for the feedback and apologise. We had another platter , bone and scale free. The tempura ebi and red miso soup with shiitake was delicious. The beef tataki was a tad bit too sour for my taste but good. Will be back again. Thank you.
C.
We arrived with a high expectation of great food and elegant setting. Atmosphere is cafeteria in style.. no ambience if you want a romantic dinner. Food is good but overpriced and wine pour was on the negative side of generous at 120 ml. We paid $251 for two people and no dessert. Food service was quick at first when the restaurant was empty but slowed as they got busy. We love Japanese but will return to some of our other favourites
A.
The Sunday brunch is awesome.. But the restaurant month menu is abit of disappointment.. Maybe it got too popular on the year.. It hard to keep up
D.
Great food, great taste! Very attentive staff who know the menu well. Fantastic to watch the chefs prepare in the open kitchen. Not high end so you can relax and enjoy the food. Great way to sample lots of Japanese tatses.
t.
I went there like a month ago, the ingredients they are using are very fresh, beverages are outstanding as well. Additionally, Michelle is the best waitress I have ever met. She was extremely patient and polite. The service from her is the best I have ever had as well. She deserves recognition for exceptional service.
V.
Food is great but the crappy wooden chopsticks easily split and splintered , surely they can afford better for the price charged!
R.
We had just checked into the Sky City Grand and came across this Japanese restaurant. We sat up at the bar and ordered amazing cocktails from a very well informed bar man. We went onto order small dishes to share. The crayfish taco was my favourite but the chicken yakitori, the squid, the spinach salad, the pork slider and the salmon were all so delicious and fresh we will be back. Super impressed
T.
Awesome sushi and some of the best service I have experienced in Auckland. They even have fresh wasabi!
C.
Great service.
Yummy food and cocktails.
G.
Fresh fish, excellent flavours, and helpful service.
C.
Will need to visit for dinner, stopped in for drinks after dinner at the Grill nearby. Bar staff were great, cocktails were well thought out and executed to perfection. Didn't catch his name but young Asian man that served us was damn good
J.
Wow. Outstanding. One of Auckland's finest restaurants. Book ahead to be sure of a table. The sushi is great but it's just the start. This place is Japanese fine dining at its best. Excellent starters, mains and desserts. Wonderful wine, beer and cocktails selection. Take a group for a special occasion or be selfish, go by yourself and eat at the bar. You won't regret it.
K.
Food is amazing, incredible taste, not mediocre at all. But it is loud, that's not a negative but rather if you want a quiet evening out, romantic and all that, it's a bit noisey due to it's popularity. Unless you can afford to hire out the separate dining room. Expensive but well, worth the price, waiters and service staff are outstanding!!
M.
Took my wife here for her birthday and we both absolutely loved it. The vibe is very trendy and chilled, which is nice, the waitress we had was attentive without being all over us, and the food, oh the food, was just amazing. Menu is designed to be shared, which is really nice, so order perhaps 3 items from each of the menu sections (three main sections) and that will fill 2 people nicely, without leaving you wheezing. Highly, highly recommended.
F.
Food was good, but too pricey for the portion sizes. Ambiance was nice, but service was a bit lacking (veggies came out last, ~10-15 minutes after we'd finished everything else).
N.
Good food, good service. Bread from sliders were a bit stale but forgivable. Would return. Minus one star for a very sticky table.
V.
Have dined here before so took family out to celebrate a birthday. Menu easy to follow, tasty and worth sharing. Service was punctual and friendly.
S.
Impressed..twice! lunch and dinner, and definitely highly rate the dinner $88 set menu for the added benefit of desserts to round off the palate, which were exquisite. Worth every cent. Service impeccable, drinks and water constantly topped up without evening noticing. Food is fresh, vibrant, and mouth watering. One of, if not Auckland's best Japanese restaurants.
J.
Three of us went here for dinner the other night due to recommendations by others. The food was superb. Some of the dishes we had were sushi rolls, sashimi, salmon teriyaki. All were excellent. A point was taken off by the way the food came to the table. The main portion of the dinner was delivered at different intervals, and after we ate most of the main meal the vegetables were served. This would be a 5 star experience if the wait staff delivered the food in a more organized fashion
L.
Often when you travel for work you sit by yourself looking at your phone, or into space, this was a vibrant restaurant and a view of the kitchen kept my attention. The food was delicious. I chose a number of smaller dishes and therefore got to experience a variety flavours and textures. It wasn’t cheap but I went for food not alcohol so the bill was “doable”. After a disappointing meal last night it was worth the extra couple of dollars to finish of the busy day. You watch the staff, the attention to detail and the sheer amount of people working on your dining experience and you can see what you pay for .. top Qaulity
A.
Did was really good, so as drinks 🤗. Bit too expensive though
K.
Definitely a five star rating for this restaurant. The service was excellent, and the food was absolutely delicious. I have many food allergies and they catered for me excellently with plenty of options, and every waiter that delivered food to the table confirmed which dish was coeliac suitable. They also cater for vegetarians and vegans well too. The food is fresh, extremely well presented and delicious. The drinks were great too, with a good cocktail list.
We had a great evening at Masu and would definitely dine here again!
T.
One of the best restaurant in Auckland, for sure ! Lovely service, amazing food (tried the black cod, probably the best fish dish I've ever tried) ! Highly recommend !
J.
5 star all the way. Presentasion was fantastic and food was excellent!
M.
new style of Japanese food, delicious, open kitchen. food was fresh and service was on point. downside is their set menu is unlikely to change now(used to change every season/quarter) due to their head chef who manages the menu has left the shop (was told by the manager last time we were there). still a great place for good Japanese food.
A.
We came across this restaurant by chance as the restaurant we initially planned on going was fully occupied but couldn’t be more pleased with everything we experienced—including the hospitality, ambiance and particularly the food. Arguably the best Japanese restaurant in town, price is relatively a bit steep but it is truly well worth your money. The chocolate dessert is highly recommended
R.
Great service. Excellent quality on the food
M.
This restaurant always seems to be busy. This creates a bit of a buzz which is nice when many other places are quiet on a week night.
We were seated from the bar area reasonably quickly but then they forgot to take our order. This was put right however after I brought their attention to the fact.
Our meal was very tasty. We had among other dishes, the Sashimi, Soft Shell Crab, Miso Soup, all of which are very tasty. This restaurant serves a thicker style Sashimi which is not my preference but still delicious, tasty and leaves you wanting more.
Their prices including the wine is on the higher side as far as pricing goes. We were treated to this meal and I am not sure if I was paying that I would find enough value to return often, but is OK for a special occasion.
M.
Always a great experience to dine at Masu. Love the ambient, food and service
C.
Best Japanese restaurant, had dinner with my friend on his birthday, and ordered a cake, staff are so lovely, they even help me to write my friend name on the cake, also they asked to pay for the cake before they make it, however my credit card kept being blocked somehow, still they made me the cake and advise I can pay later. Very good experience. Highly recommend
b.
The Sunday brunch was faultless. Beautiful fresh food (and lots of it) with attentive friendly service. I had the Salmon as my main which was worth the visit alone. Highly recommended and I will be back for more!
M.
We went to Masu Restaurant a few weeks ago and had the best Japanese experience (even better than most places we went to in Japan!).. We had the most loveliest waiter, his name was Kuppi, and he made us feel so welcomed in our experience there - Very impressed by him!.. We did their set menu, and my partner is gluten intolerant. They managed to make the most delicious GF alternatives, including their soy sauce.. Some standouts for us was the tempura tuna sushi rolls, the spicy tuna rolls, the freshness of the fish, and the extravagant delicious dessert on ice blocks at the end. For drinks, I got the Japanese mojito which was a nice twist, and my partner got a Masu fashioned (their take on an old fahsioned) - The presentation was amazing along with the taste, must have for whiskey lovers!.. We loved our experience, and craved the food so much, that we ended up going back the very next day! Highly recommend for an amazing Japanese experience in Auckland!
L.
This our go to dinner when in Akld. I'm a coeliac and have never had any problems. Last time we ate we sat right in front of the kitchen and watched the care they take to ensure no cross contamination. Food always tastes amazing and we reckon worth every penny. The service is always impeccable. Definitely a must try if you visiting Auckland.
E.
Fresh sashimi
Excellent service
A.
Cracking atmosphere! And the food’s delicious. They nailed every dish.
The wine list is extensive and full of interesting options.
M.
Four of us went on a Saturday evening. About half the food ordered arrived within 30 minutes, then it was another 40 minutes before anything else arrived. Sashimi, sushi and most of the vegetable dishes were gorgeous. The chicken dishes were very average.
F.
Amazing experience in Masu
I ordered hug e sashimi platter and tempura prawns and they were the best food Ive ever tried
The waiter who greeted me was really kind and very impressive
I’ll come back here again
P.
This could be the best Japanese food in Auckland, a little more expensive but this is fine dining. Masu is popular so making a booking is essential. If you are two people ask to sit at the counter to watch the wonderful goings on in the kitchen. Nice bar area for pre dinner drinks and then onto the restaurant seating, full menu and large selection of wines etc. A great night out with perfect food and fantastic service. Thank you so much, never fails to please.
S.
Cool atmosphere, great service and delicious food.
S.
Buffet is top notch even though choices are pretty small, but in the end you know what you are paying for — quality premium dish. Love it here. Oh we celebrated my partners birthday and they gave us a scoop of ice cream haha so cute.
D.
Very cool and trendy interior. Great wine list and fantastic cocktails. So e dushez were slightly undercooked. (Robato broccoli practically raw. Some of lamb was well done and some nearly raw.). But all other dishes excellent and ngiri was fabulous. Worth a trip.
W.
We had a Sunday lunch buffet with family and friends, the food was good with some standouts such as the ribs and salmon. Atmosphere was nice we were tucked away as we were a group of 11 so it made it semi private. The buffet itself wasn't overwhelming, there was a nice selection of food but it wasn't to the same level as some of the other meals. All in all we'll probably come back again but maybe try the dinner menu.
D.
Masu is more than the sum of its parts and those parts, even when judged separately, are all great.
If you like Japanese beers and Sake you've come to the right place with a great selection and very knowledgable bar staff if you're new to it all.
There is a huge menu choice with typical and not-so typical Japanese cuisine. A friend found the dishes a little underwhelming but I was happy with flavour and beautiful presentation.
The venue is very nicely designed with large with an open, airy feel.
I did think it was a little expensive.
J.
Delicious and tasty dishes. Definitely upscale dining so don't expect large dishes of food. But each dish ordered melts in the mouth. I ordered the apple blossom tofu for dessert, it felt like something out of MasterChef class.
N.
Fantastic food as always. Delicate and delicious meals. We did the 8 course set menu which I would highly recommend. Note that the August restaurant month $55 'dinner' special is only during the hours 5:30pm-6:30pm, which is hard to find in small print in their advertising, and can only really be considered 'dinner' hours for a 5 year old.
N.
Fantastic gluten free food and service. It is a little expensive but so worth it. They prepare everything separately if you are a coeliac and reassure you that your meal is the gf one when they deliver. Excellent understanding and delicious food. Also they are happy to change dishes to make them gf such as the broccoli.
E.
Review Edit. After taking up the offer to return to MASU I was blown away by the quality of the food and by the service received. Our waiter was friendly, on hand yet not so much that we were disrupted. The food is probably the best I've had in Auckland, presentation was outstanding as was the quality. If I was asked to return to any restaurant in NZ, MASU would be my number one choice.
Original review. Very disappointing service. Sat at the bar waiting to be served at 5.20pm, therefore not busy at all and was ignored while the barman chose to serve 4 other people who arrived a significant time after us. After over 10min waiting we walked out after informing front desk of our reason. Was not expecting this poor customer service after reading the reviews!
S.
We had dinner here twice during our stay. Sashimi selection outstanding. Black cod and Kia ora salmon dishes delicious.Rice a little dry, had to ask for it as not automatically provided with main course dishes.Very noisy if you sit near the food prep area as you have to endure the shouts from the kitchen area. Some seats too low for table. Service was quick and efficient. Overall I can recommend.
C.
Back in NZ on yet another of my 'fleeting' visits! I posted a review one year ago and am updating it now after I had lunch here earlier this week. The service is still second to none (attentive without hovering), ambience just as great whether dining for lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch and the food... be still my beating heart! Outstanding! Many thanks to Chef Chris and Staff
F.
Always have a great meal here. Fabulous service and even better cocktails. Super accommodating when it comes to dietary requirements too.
G.
Great atmosphere, great food and great service!
j.
Great food, although...I lived in Japan for a long time, never eaten anything like this. All the sashimi I loved in Japan and asked for wasn't available. So treat it as something other than Japanese and you'll enjoy it!
M.
Excellent food and service! Went with the tasting menu and it was definitely worth it. 5 courses were served and we didn't have to wait long between courses. Highly recommend and will definitely be back.
M.
It was my first proper fine dining experience, I got the Masu Shomi Set menu which cost $88 per person, which isn't cheap. But it was very worth it. Nice food, kind staff and pefect service.
G.
An amazing restaurant serving modern Japanese food, at the same time, mixing the western cooking style. It is well decorated and the atmosphere is just brilliant. Also, the service is perfect. I'd like highly recommend this restaurant!
C.
The most superb Japanese experience! Sake - Warm Towels - Beautiful Cocktails🍸
#highlyreccomended
F.
Amazing food and drinks. I have been there many times and have enjoyed it every single time. Possibly one of the best japanese places in auckland. Great for social events and parties as they have beautiful semi-private rooms. Although this restaurant is a bit on the pricey it makes up for it in the exsquisite food and drink they offer and the beautiful restaurant. It is very central in Auckland and although it dosen't have the greatest view it is a nice place to go for a walk after and right opposite the skytower.
r.
Good fresh sashimi. Service is a bit average for the price range they offer. Hostess was still trying to dress herself by the front door in the opening time. Didnt quiet enjoy it when they explain the sashimi platter speaking so close to the platter as like hmm not feeling super hygienic and up market for that.
A.
Nothing to fault! Really really great Japanese food, lovely service, plenty of tables. Some menu items are pricey and don't expect an overloaded plate of food - just perfectly portioned deliciousness! Great lunch spot.
A.
Had the Shomi menu - it was delicious. Nice mix of fresh fish, meat and vegetarian. Also ordered the alaskan crab which was yum - but probably wouldn't get that again. Cocktails were tasty, light and refreshing. Favourite would have to be the sashimi platter - the dessert platter was one of the best Ive had. Would definitely go back!
S.
spent 255$ for a couple dinner, and every penny was worth
P.
Excellent Japanese food. Love it!
A.
Loved the food and Great service
V.
Great place and ambience, though pricey. The drinks looked and tasted wonderful. The food wasn't so much different from what we get at Japanese restaurants in Singapore.
A.
Really loved the cuisine and the aura of the place. Worth celebrating my birthday. Really good customer service ( Anya) for the cake surprise.
D.
Highly recommended - beef fillet and the chashu pork belly, both were cooked to perfection. The beef was a perfect medium rare, and the red chili garlic soy sauce was an excellent compliment. The pork was tender and juicy, and a good way to use up the red chili garlic soy sauce that came with the beef.
Not recommended - the king crab hotpot. For $2 more than the king crab leg that is also on the menu, the pot was predominantly rice (which wasn't stated on the menu) with very little crab meat. Yea sure, the rice's soaked up some good flavour from the crab, but in hindsight I would've picked the crab leg.
D.
Don't listen to me. Go there and find out for yourself. Or don't, but its your loss.
Very good contemporary Japanese fair, but so accessible. The front of house are fantastic, so nice. Almost too many options for food, but they are all as good as you can expect, unless you have a finer expectation then head to the place in Brown St
P.
Service was impeccable. Table of 9 and we went for set menu. Presentation and full of flavour throughout. My favourite was taco and dessert. Could not fault anything.
K.
Beautiful and fresh seafood. Didn't enjoy the Japanese inspired tiramisu. If you are going to muck around with a classic, it has to be better. This wasn't.
H.
Loved it here, great service your staff were just the best, great atmosphere, food delicious, thank you for the Sake etiquette lesson. Best Sake I've had. Will be back for sure.
Q.
Service= exceptional, cleanliness= exceptional, value= exceptional, food= exceptional
L.
The food was stunningly presented as well as delicious. The service was carefully planned out and delivered with perfect timing and spacing. The staff were incredibly polite, accommodating, and more than happy to offer any kind of assistance. I could not recommend MASU more - all in all, it was a beautiful and truly worthwhile experience!
R.
Went for the $75 special. Not bad, but maybe not great either. The range of offerings is good although not really inspired. Smorgasbord start followed by oysters, mains choice and desert
S.
We had the saturday brunch several timed and it's great. The sushi and sashimi comes in 3 different fish-varieties and in addition there are salads, soups and vegetables. The main meal isn't very big, but you could eat buffet only and be thoroughly satisfied anyway. The desserts are always spectecular.
Friendly staff. Much more childfriendly than i expected - in spite of all the fancy food and somewhat fancy price tag. There is a big play room where the little ones can go crazy without disturbing anyone! Baby chairs also available.
N.
Fresh and delicious Japanese in Auckland. Great decor.
G.
Very friendly service and beautiful Japanese atmosphere. The food is very good as well, though a little on the pricey side for relatively basic sushi roles.
M.
Hay just ate here today for my Mother's birthday, it was absolutely amazing, every dish was outstanding, Waiter was professional A+ , beautiful set up, go!...best Japanese I've had in years, and I've had a lot of Japanese.
R.
Provided the most amazing Gluten Free food, and so yummy. The service is outstanding and plenty of thought has gone into fine details
L.
Yet another great dining experience at Masu. Had the Masu Tokusen menu this time and the dishes were delicious! However, for a sweet tooth I found it difficult to share the dessert platter with a group of 7. Maybe mini versions of 3 desserts can be served to each person instead of 6 desserts (actual portion) to be shared amongst 7 people.
K.
Just incredible. My work team of 8 and i did a 11 course meal named masu shomi menu. We arrived at 8pm and left not long after 10. Great environment and awesome staff. Venue felt great. Well lit
C.
Great food and beautiful interior decor. The staff is lovely and is very attentive.
M.
Had a lovely evening very pleasant friendly staff and great food. Would love to go back
G.
Made to satisfy all of those date night or special event fine dining desires. The course menu plus matched drinks easily meet all taste expectations, and even tried a few new things along the way. Beautiful plate presentations meaning we naturally had to photograph each one and share them (after the meal of course for the sharing part haha). Really liked the drink selection. Sitting at the bar for 2 was probably even better than having a table TBH.
E.
Value for money lunch set at NZ$49 only !
K.
Amazing Japanese food. Had the degustation with matched drinks. Great clean tastes with more than could be consumed - its rare for us not to be able to complete the dessert platter!
M.
Excellent food, like right up there with the best. We didn't appreciate being chased out by someone asking if we'd paid (after spending near $500)... That was the only spoiler on an otherwise excellent night.
C.
Service and food always great. Portions a tad smaller on the $75 sashimi plate but beautifully presented. Always a nice vibe the miso cod is always a fave
J.
Underwhelming. Definitely did not live up to the hype. Nicely presented food, but taste only average or just above - no culinary wow moments here. Had the bigger set menu and added crayfish taco and tuna sashimi (wanted o-toro but they were out already at 8:30 on a Saturday). Sashimi and sushi decent. Taco average. Black cod with Miso nice, but *nowhere* near the Nobu equivalent. Service ok, prices way over the top. Shame, won't be returning.
K.
Love love love best dining experience I've had in a while, takes me back to asian fusion in Melbourne when we could travel. Will be back!
F.
Went for the Sunday brunch.
Let's start with the good things. Unlimited sashimi for starters which was excellent. Tastes exactly how sashimi should. Also unlimited small dishes and salad were good. Try the eggplant salad and the kumara salad! The chilled tofu was really smooth and can taste the soybeans. Fried salmon was good too, but as you'd expect, really oily. For sushi, nigiri is good, maki isn't.
We ordered 4 mains, and sadly, all four were pretty average.
The dessert platter finish was excellent, so good finish.
D.
Food is very nice except for the Alaskan king crab leg which the sauce is too much. Service is pretty good. Would come again next time. Average PP $120 NZD
G.
Excellent staff and delicious meal. We sat at the bar and the barman made sure we were taken care of the entire time, even gave us a complimentary entree when the waiter accidentally spilled a tiny portion of our order.
S.
The food here is amazing. The service is impeccable. A well priced tasting menu and the team will adapt to meet your dietary requirements. There is a vegan/vegetarian menu available on request.
R.
The food is good...the cocktails are decent however the service can be slow on a busy night!!!
J.
Exquisite food. Staff pays attention to detail and gives you the best service. Amazing!
R.
Very good food and excellent staff. Special thanks to the incredibly knowledgeable barman who took a lot of time in explaining the different types of saki and allowing us a taste a few first.
R.
Used to be great but feels like it’s gone downhill or competition has stepped up in terms of quality. Now it feels overpriced and doesn’t have the exceptional sashimi and sushi that you’d expect.
N.
Finally got to trying Masu for the first time and loved it. Definite highlights were the spicy lamp chop and the mixed sashimi (the kingfish was amazing). The fish and all the produce is super fresh. We had the $88 set menu which is a crazy amount of food for the money, 8 courses, left feeling absolutely stuffed. Great night overall I would happily go back
R.
Hi, I dined here last night and I cannot stop raving about the delicious food and awesome service we had. It was an amazing experience and by far the best Japanese restaurant I have ever been too - 10 stars definitely!!! Thank you so much.
T.
Second time nichiyo Sunday brunch. A wonderful place for a family special occasion. Great food enjoyed both by the 5 and 90 year old. Great atmosphere. Lovely staff. Highly recommended.
D.
Great food and atmosphere. I like that it’s an open kitchen. Reasonably priced for the quality of food and service you get.
B.
Had the vegan set menu and it was amazing!!! There were other requirements at the table and each were taken care of impeccably! Great service. Will definitely be back!!
T.
Premium Japanese restaurant. We tried the $88 per person banquet menu and it was excellent. Sashimi are fresh and the food was great. Definitely recommended.
M.
Excellent. Don’t be put off by location near a casino and a hotel.
J.
Best sashimi, so fresh! Fish and wagyu beef are amazing. Overall food and service is good
C.
Service fantastic, great aesthetics, delicious food. Beef tataki is excellent. Wasn't a huge fan of the scampi tempura, but overall very nice
e.
We came here for dinner on January 2nd after finding the restaurant we were intending to walk-in closed and we’re so glad we did. We were lucky that they had space given that the place was buzzing. The service, ambience and food was excellent. Couldn’t recommend highly enough.
B.
Always a pleasure. Five star amazing cuisine. Staff are second to none. If you are looking for fine dining at it's best then look mo further. And try their beverages saki bar.
N.
We had a great lunch here with the kids and extended family. The sushimi was delicious, so fresh and moreish. Not cheap but worth the price!
R.
Very lovely wine list, nice creative menu, always a happy gathering here for everyone including if you have to entertain friends who are strict vegans.
P.
Absolutley amazing food....we didn't need to use a menu as we were sitting in front of the open kitchen and could just choose the food by sight being cooked..... one of the best in Auckland by far thank you
T.
Nic Watt has exceeded perfection and delivered MASU!
This thriving venue artfully creates a hybrised Japanese dining experience with an energy and atmosphere that is contagious and enthralling. The menu captures you in a world of fine cuisine while an exquisite assault on your senses lurks behind each creation on the menu but for me the black cod trumps the day!
The waitstaff round off a perfect package at MASU, a strong contender for Aucklands finest dining.
A.
What can I say other than a 10/10 experience. Was a first date and it impressed us both. Waitress was a professional and suggested fantastic dishes and wine. Pricey but you get what you pay for.
J.
Amazing food and fabulous service!
S.
food atmosphere and service all excellent
A.
A pricey upmarket Japanese restaurant. The ambience is too westernised for the supposedly traditional, authentic Japanese food. Since Soto is closed down, the top Japanese restaurant crown is still being contested by several Japanese restaurants. If you want to impress and flashing out your moolah, then this is your place.
M.
Impeccable service beautiful food, great fit out, all round amazing dining experience. Coped very well with one of our diners being gluten free.
j.
Delicious and over the top Asian fusion restaurant full of delicatessens and obnoxious people. The full and excellent service make it a must, just prepare to pay for what you get.
B.
Our favourite Japanese restaurant if not oue favourite restaurant full stop! Always a pleasure.
W.
I rarely write reviews, but this place was sensational. Staff were amazing, food was stunning - fresh and sublime. The evening was such a delight and I highly recommend it.
A.
Our waitress Lizzy made all the pain go away. Food experience insanley good. A wonderful escape from the mundane.

Y.

F.
Great place to hang out after work. Busy, but great, attentative staff. Menu is always good. Good drinks/wine menu too.
G.
Vegetarians can trust Masu. Leave the staff to choose among the excellent dishes. Elegant presentation. Big menu. Superb coffee too.
M.
Favourite Japanese of all times. Loved the food and its presentation. Try some of their sakes or vodka cocktails. Definitely the best in town
S.
My husband and I had dined here a few days and loved the food. The staff were nice and friendly too. Will definitely come here again!
L.
King crab leg is best dish. Sashimi was average.
P.
We may have just ordered wrong but very bland flavours and average food. Staff were amazing though.
D.
The menu was outstanding, the quality of fish was second to none. Brilliant customer service and nice ambience on top of it.
M.
Went with a group of friends but unfortunately we were right at the back by the kitchen and we had to yell to hear each other's conversations. The food was good but just so noisy it ruined the evening for us
M.
Highly recommend MASU to anyone. The attention to detail is superb with both the food and the service ensuring a five star dining experience. We will certainly be back.
B.

The most quality tuna cuts... no complaints... can be a bit pricey... but usually worth it
S.
Very classy venue and the food is good but not very good options for Vegans and vegetarians
J.
Amazing service and care was given when staff found out one of our group was Celiac-all food was explaned and special additional foods were brought to our table - all food was excellent and so were all staff
Will definately be spreading the word.
M.

The service at this place is from another planet and food is something else. If you think you know Japanese cuisine you will need to think again after visiting this place.

M.
Very good food and service was excellent
A.
Good food and good vibes. Love it. I am definitely coming back the second time!
J.
Delicious flavours and fresh sashimi, Masu deserves all its accolades but suffers from a service plasticity that hints at its corporate thoroughbred.
L.
A fantastic experience, great range of delicious sushi, sashimi and other Japanese food, constantly refreshed.
M.
Place is good but the food is average, the salmon cut could be better.
M.
Great food and great service

S.
Had dinner here while the food was great we had a shift change 3/4 of the way through our meal and were forgotten by staff after that decided to leave after waiting for 20 minutes to get dessert so was a disappointing end to the night
