Reviews of Orphans Kitchen

I seriously do not think you can go wrong here. These guys manage to put stuff together that makes you wanna try it just to see if they nail it. Jokes on me, they do! My "go to" for brunch is the haloumi broccoli dish - big portion at a very decent price. My partner is more into the spinach & silverbeet on toast. The smoked fish & pickled eggs on toast are also delicious and filling. If you're looking after a smaller bite, just get the fish tortilla - packed with flavour! Recently though, I've been obsessed with their charred green beans with labneh and fried eggs. Wow... My taste buds definitely appreciate it! Their Southland cheese roll has a twist (cumin) and the Wagyu brisket with kumara mash is to die for. Good coffee and great staff!
J.
Very interesting and unique food, very creative but still very tasty. Friendly staff and they have their own rooftop beehive for their source of honey.
G.
Great food! Good vaccination check, feel safe!
M.
Had a chai latte and salmon on toast with horseradish and capers. Quite popular, nice atmosphere. Everything made on the premises including the chai!

We were lucky to be in Auckland on the first Tuesday of the month when Orphans Kitchen does an open test kitchen to workshop new dish ideas. The 4 course menu is $70 and you can get matching wines for $35. The dishes we had were all incredibly inventive. They provided great explanations of each dish and the pairing wine, which made it really interesting and fun!

It's a really *interesting*, *trendy*, *ethical* night out... that doesn't *quite* deliver on the flavours as consistently as it could.
Their website and food philosophy is made clear up front: Orphan's Kitchen is the epitome of the trendy Ponsy eatery, and that's who they want to be. And they're good at it. If you're looking for innovative, completely on-trend hipster food, this is your place.
You will have fermented sour things, balanced with creamier things. You will have elegantly plated delicious ethical seafood. You will have something charred for flavour purposes, balanced against something contrasting. They're good at this stuff, and if you get the tasting menu (recommended, and a good deal for $85), you'll get to taste the range.
But.... and you knew this was coming, right?... not everything here is going to thrill everyone. Some (many?) of the dishes will overreach or feel unfinished. Some dishes are too interested in being trendy or innovative to be perfectly balanced - which was always going to happen in a restaurant that varies their menu based on availability and what catches the chefs' eyes that day/week.
There are some weird choices. For example, the charcuterie and pickles we had had no bread, cracker, or crispy thing to spread the delicious parfait on. The lamb protein was tiny in comparison with the enormous charred cabbage. The fish tartare was amazing, but... just needed something else to be crisp with it. The tamarillo/coffee/cocoa/goddam chia seeds dessert just didn't quite gel as a dish. It's all little things... but little things that slightly undermine the whole experience, taking what could be a 5 star dining experience down into the 3.5-4 star range.
It's good, it's trendy, it's innovative, it's trying to push the boundaries. When it succeeds, it's very good indeed. Worth a look. But be warned, Your Mileage May Vary, just like the menu on the night.

The menu items here look familiar but does have a bit of the twist. This includes the ceviche with melon and the fish with grapes. I also tried the luminary cocktail.
The luminary looked interesting with the floating luminescent droplets and tasted nice and refreshing.
The ceviche was really nice with the melon. There was also quite a lot of cucumber ribbons too. The fish for the mains was cooked nicely with crispy skin. The fennel that came with it was nice and soft. I didn't like the grapes (didn't really like the taste and they also had seeds) on the plate though. The pasta was a quite al dente but that was explained during ordering. It was alright.
We tried the clafoutis for dessert along with the Muscato which was recommended for it. I liked the clafoutis base but didn't like the plum since it was too sour. The Muscato was ok but it did have a bit of an aftertaste I wasn't liking.
Interesting food, some were nice others ok. Service was quite good since they went through the menu and answered questions. There wasn't a lot of tables and we were on one of the larger tables sharing with other people.
I.
I like its unusual dishes, such as black glutinous rice with fresh fruit and coconut yoghurt or slow poached egg w anchovies and meyer lemon sauce toast. Can't see the egg Benedict...
I had a slight obsession with mushrooms, so when I saw them made a decision on the menu. Add a quark and a lot of leeks to a black salted bowl of soup. Next to it is a rustic inner spelt bread used to make charred butter to eliminate the savory taste of the soup. But they are the best "shrooms" I have ever had. The combination of Supreme Coffee and impeccable but laid back service allows you to start a fantastic start in the morning.
A.
Very creative menu. The food is very good but the place was quite busy and we had to wait quite a while to get our coffee and then some more time to get our brunch. I still recommend. The staff is very nice.
J.
We enjoyed so much their cabbage dish, we came couple of times for that, the beef brisket pumpkin with pickle purple cabbage is very delicious, mushroom dish is a bit liquidious but tasty, both dish is great for winter
D.
Had an amazing dinner here. The food was out of this world and the service was friendly! A++ dining experience!
M.
This place is next-level and everything tastes superb. Maybe I went on a bad day, but the waitress was not polite & too cool to smile
A.
Hip fresh food in the trendy Ponsonby district. A well dressed crowd. Highly recommended restaurant. we had their beautiful fresh hapuka and coconut yogurt crudo. Beautifully plated dishes
L.
Food was always outstanding, wine list with many tempting options, great service
J.
Bolognese something sour dough .. aka mince on toast. Kiwi classic made fancy and I’m here for it.
C.
Went for a business brunch with a large group and everything from the food to service was fantastic! My main was Halloumi, broccoli, caramelised onions and hazelnuts. Will be back
K.
Food is beautifully plated, but flavor and design are poorly conceptualized. Avoid the Reuben and you should be good. Their coffee is wonderful!
T.
Friendly staff, delicious food and great take on the bloody mary
N.
Went for a lunch date and had the wagyu. Extremely filling! Flavour was good but not amazing. The same could be said about the service. All in all a solid lunch experience. Recommended for a casual sit down.
N.
Good coffee ☕ good service and what looked like a good menu. Keen to go back and have more than coffee.
E.
Recommend the bolognese on sourdough for brunch. One of the best places for lunch in Auckland. Can be busy and a densely packed.
L.
Lovely service from the staff. The fish toast was delicious. Perfect light portion (got the one slice option) with great flavour and texture combinations. I love a cafe that does things a bit differently and they delivered in spades. Would definitely go back.
G.
Even though my order was okay, my friend's schnitzel was burnt..
P.
My partner and I love places that are sociable but not rowdy, classy but not pretentious, eco-conscious but not too woke, and super yum. Orphan’s Kitchen ticked all those boxes last night! The shared tables are fun, the staff were super friendly and the food? Well, honestly, it’s in a league of its own. This is not typical restaurant fare. Every dish had a unique characteristic. We had the four course banquet. The only criticism to offer? We were so full we rolled out the door at the end of the evening :-) Lovely way to share a wedding anniversary dinner - but we won’t be waiting a year before coming back!
B.
Recommended by a friend. All innovated dishes. Oyster is superb. Others we ordered, especially the venison, is not made quite right. Texture, flavours, the combinations are not quite right.
R.
My partner and I went for dinner. The positives: great atmosphere, friendly service, creative menu, beautiful plating. Downside: the flavors didn't deliver. The homemade butter that came with the bread was extremely salty. I had the line fish as a main. The fish itself was not very flavourful at all next to a leek and spring onion warm salad which was overpowering in the onion flavor. There wasn't much subtlety in the dish. However, the fish sauce at the bottom of the dish was lovely. My partner had the lamb shoulder, which was also too salty. We were excited to try the dessert - a chocolate/artichoke creation. Again, the presentation was beautiful. The varied textures were complimentary. However, the flavor combinations just didn't seem to work. I enjoyed the artichoke chips dipped in chocolate with the light cream. But, the cake part at the bottom was extremely dense and slightly too bitter for me. Even though I give it only three stars, my partner and I want to try it again when there's a different menu, simply because we enjoyed the creativity/presentation behind the dishes.
J.
Food was great, always creative however the service was an attitude of indifference.
Here we are trying to support our local businesses and neither of the wait staff could manage a smile let alone engaging when handing out cutlery/ plates and water. Not like the place is busy.
Disappointing. As an owner I'd not be thrilled with the efforts of my staff. Yes these are worrying times which requires extra effort at the coal face of hospo.
K.
We used there amazing courtyard for our wedding reception and we were blown away by the beautiful and tasty food. Excellent service and helpfulness of the staff. My favourite dining and event experience I’ve ever had. All our guests have been raving about it. ❤️
R.
Love this place. Great food, good coffee. The crumpets with burnt butter and roof honey (yes, honey from their roof) were so good!
s.
Food was good, a little pricey for the amount but taste is good
A.
We had a dinner with 5-course shared banquet at Orphans Kitchen. It was something extraordinary and exceptional. Very original, it was a pure art of mixing tastes in combination with engaging, warm and friendly service. Highly recommended for those who are looking for original cuisine. Thank you, Orphans Kitchen.
A.
The decoration of the place is nice and there are lots of parking outside.
However the food is just OK (I ordered the honey hotcake thingy, but it tastes like stone, personal opinion), not sure why is it top 10 cafe in Auckland.
K.
Come in most mornings for a takeaway coffee. Not only is it the best coffee around, they serve it with organic milk and you can opt in for the reusable cup service they offer through "again again". Staff are always friendly and offer great yarns!
F.
Tasty food with excellent service. There was no menu online when we went, which seemed to be because they adjust according to seasonal availability of produce. Portions aren't very large, so if you have a big appetite, one main may not satisfy you.
Wait service in New Zealand is generally inferior to the US, since American waiters are generally paid very low hourly rates and survive on tips, but our waiter at Orphan's Kitchen was friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and attentive. I didn't catch his name, but he said he actually prepared the nut milk used in their delicious brownies himself.
J.
Saturday Dinner.
A truly outstanding dining experience. Knowledgeable and approachable staff; exciting and beautiful food; an extensive and diverse wine list. If you're willing to hand over the reins and be taken along for the ride, then I could not recommend Orphan's Kitchen highly enough.
L.
Food very very nice, fresh and tasty. Prices are similar to other places, barista could benefit from smiling. A bit light on the mayo especially when you’re paying quite a bit of money for a meal...sorry to be negative, my theory is unless someone tells you you can’t improve.
L.
Went after having this on my list to of places to try and loved it. Loved the pared back vibe of both the restaurant and menu. Had the wagu brisket and kumara hash which was delicious. Will definitely be going back.
C.
Pretty decent food with a lot of good vegetarian options. Main reasons for not giving a better review was seating (very uncomfortable chairs and tables with odd shapes), a bit too much on the sour palette (pickled cabbage in most things in large quantities) and too much reusing of the same ingredients (most dishes had the same ingredients in them). Cheese rolls and fish taco the highlights. Wouldn't go again.
D.
Wonderful colour and texture coordination between the muted pastel and woodsy decor and the soft earth and sea tones worn by the rather clone-ish and wan 30-something customers, in this biosphere of hipsterdom. And top marks for the mellow upbeat sound of Stevie Wonder over breakfast. The coffee and food seem almost irrelevant to this crowd, sitting largely at tables adorned by empty cups and glasses of tap water. If so they're missing out - the coffee is strong, the food fresh and tasty and the service courteous and correct.
T.
Never been to a better restaurant. Orphans Kitchen is the standard to beat. You haven’t eaten out in Aotearoa until you’ve been here. Everything from the service, to decor, to food and drinks is perfection.
C.
Outstanding. Service and food equally matched. Menu options not as broad as some, but some unconventional options and all well prepared and served with a better standard than is usual in Auckland. Really worth a try - highly recommend the spinach and silverbeet on sourdough with chilli and hazelnuts. Brilliant with a slow poached egg. Healthy, and tasty as hell. Coffee was actually boiled up properly and very flavoursome blend. Highest review score I have given in quite a while now and well deserved. Good stuff, guys.
N.
If you're looking for a creative menu that combines skillfully crafted dishes worthy of any fine dining restaurant but within a more relaxed, casual atmosphere, look no further.
Ideal for couples and groups. There's a large, sheltered outdoor dining area too which is also good for families with strollers. Inside seating is not very family friendly. They don't take bookings so come early or be prepared to wait.
G.
Had coffee here and it was awesome, will be back to taste the food too.
I.
We had such a great experience here. Top notch service and mind blowing food. Never experienced anything like it. Everything tasted delicious and you could tell it was absolutely fresh and organic/locally grown. We will definitely be back soon too try it again.
A.
Enjoyable and interesting meal, mostly... I dined here alone Friday night. Service was prompt, friendly and professional. I opted for the tasting menu and the first few dishes were awesome, particularly the cured trevally with Parsnip Puree. A couple of the dishes sounded interesting and looked interesting, but missed the mark for me. The Pork dish with Kumera Tortillas and Kiwifruit Mole for example, had a great porky flavour, but the dish lacked any brightness to counter the more muted flavours which left it feeling a little bland. Also, the Apple Tart dessert was a bit too rustic for my liking with bits of skin being so tough it was difficult to cut with a spoon was wasn't enjoyable to chew. Tasted ok, but I think that dish probably could use some refinement. Overall, I highly recommend this place, I'd return again no question and I really like what they are trying to do with the food. The Caramelised Feijoa soda was fantastic!
A.
Had Brunch here. Toast with heirloom tomato was delicious, the peanut butter and carrot kimshi was good too. Service was so-so, and they had run out of both my soft drink options at 9.15 in the morning! May a bit too cool for school?
A.
Have eaten at most of the top 50 restaurants in Auckland over the years. Went to Orphans Kitchen last night and had the set dinner menu and was utterly blown away by the quality and incredible flavours in every dish. Absolutely hands down one of THE very best restaurants in the city.
V.
Great place for a brunch! Good quality food
T.
I like this place with its ever-changing menu and eclectic offering. It can be a little sparse, a little austere, but it’s worth trying it anyway and seeing what you are offered on the particular occasion when you have and the visit.
I do wish the staff were a little friendlier, that would help with the overall experience.
A.
Visited for brunch. The coffee was top notch, the food even better. No egg benedict here instead a refreshingly different set of dishes still involving some of the classic brunch ingredients- smashed avo anyone? From a slow poached egg with a delicious texture to red cabbage whose acidity perfectly balanced a dish the food here was sublime.
T.
Great seasonal food. Nice staff and great service. Not a place you come for a quiet romantic evening as everyone is crammed in together. Excellent if you are looking for amazing tasty fresh food in a bustling environment though!
K.
One of the best restaurants on Ponsonby Road. The dinner menu features unique, creative and above all else, delicious dishes. Brunch is equally good, crumpets with honey from the roof and smashed avocado among the highlights. Service is friendly and attentive.
They could use some portable eftpos machines to pay at the table as the current payment area is cramped and in a busy walkway.
M.
Visited for breakfast. One of the most interesting meals I've had in a while. Great ethos behind the food which also appeals.
Friendly service, great coffee. Loved the majestic photographs and artwork, and the wooden tabletops.
B.
Amazing cafe on Ponsonby road. Quite expensive, but you get what you pay for and then some. Awesome and unique meals that really hit the spot. Coffee is fantastic as well. This is a chef driven institution.
J.
Fabulous breakfast, magnificent service, and brilliant music. Total package
M.
Very disappointing. We went for the monthly tasting menu. Portions were small, service good but food very average. Especially for the price. Another friend went for brunch and was also disappointed. Definitely overrated. Would not recommend nor would I go back. Can get better for cheaper elsewhere.
L.
This place has some nice food & good philosophy (local, organic etc.) But it's highly self conscious almost to the point of arrogance & feels deliberately overpriced, for what? I'm not sure. It just isn't that special ... there's alot of plain or burnt flavours & not much creativity in the combinations. Also .. Why list Oyster in the menu as $6 then tell you it's a 3 order minimum. Just write 3 x Oysters = $18 in the menu!
K.
- Kind of an eclectic menu; don't be afraid to ask for clarity, explanations.
- Great service.
- Nice cappuccino.
- Decor, vibe = good.
- The crumpet was not what I expected. But the honey helped.
- Good location; active neighborhood.
- Considered pricey.
T.
We were impressed. I had amazing long black and affogato, and my partner really enjoyed her brisket with mashed kumaras. Perfect service, several gluten free options available.
D.
Great food, great menu at a good price
D.
Food looks beautiful but I was quite disappointed in the flavour. Staff wasn't friendly to us and we had to wait a long time for our food to arrive. I'd come back for the coffee!
S.
Food very nice but a bit overpriced imho $6 for an oyster the size of a pipi one example but guess thats Ponsonby Trendt for you. Great friendly service but slow kitchen leading to 3hrs sitting on incredibly uncomfortable stools distracted from experience. Had to stand at the end
D.
Absolutely amazing food, have never been there and been disappointed. The food is fantastic, pushing the borders between comfort food and experimental food. The only place in auckland that knows how to do a good filter coffee too.
J.
Absolutely loved every single bit about the place. Simple food perfectly executed with fantastic flavours. Awesome atmosphere, great music, super friendly staff. Sure will be back.
A.
Best service, friendly but professional. The avocado and "gems" on toast was dreamy, and the manuka honey tea was delish. The ingredients were of high quality, so I was happy to pay a higher price. I will be back.
M.
Great food and awesome staff. Loved their chai!
B.
Grrrreat food. Though $8.50 for a glass of Orange Juice, with Ice, is a bit ridiculous.
I had the Baked cabbage with Cannelini. Highly recommend adding a couple of fresh made tacos which usually don’t come with the dish. Winner!
n.
Great ambience, great service, food presentation tempting, flavours scrumptious.Ill be back with friends again.
K.
I really enjoyed Orphans Kitchen when it first opened but the last two times were sadly disappointing. My southland cheese roll was overly burnt and dry, Mum said it was all wrong. Today the food was just underwhelming and service very slow. Sad :(
K.
Great food and service. They fried some tasty tuna (caught by the owner) to our 3y old daughter, which was even not on the menu!
O.
Nice atmosphere and very friendly staff. Great food and amazing coffee with hazelnut milk! Can't wait to go back there!
l.
Great vibe and great food. Even better service as well. Definetly going back :)
D.
Relaxed atmosphere and comfortable seating. Food is very high end for the price. Friendly service. Cashew nut milk coffee is a must try!
T.
We had our annual golf group dinner last night, we had the private dining room which was fantastic. Great service, great food, great wine selection, we will be back
L.
Superb coffee, great interesting food, attentive, friendly, helpful & prompt service.
A wonderful place for a really different brunch. We'll be back.
S.
The oysters here are pretty decent, but honestly I don’t really like the rest of their food. Fusion style should be delicious, not just healthy...
M.
63 degree eggs with anchovies, chilli, chives, and lemon. Amazing! Perfect balance of flavours and nice crunchy sourdough to add texture.
T.
Maybe the best coffee I've had, delish!! Had the slow cooked bolognese breakfast, amazing. I fully recommend this place,
J.
I had a delicious halloumi, broccoli, hazelnut, date and sauerkraut extravaganza. Would highly recommend this place for amazing food and coffee.
V.
Best dining experience during my trip to Auckland. Fine food, nice wines and great service Thanks!
N.
Loved the fish tortilla - wayy too many spring onions piled on top but no biggie, just some feedback. Nice friendly service
M.
Love the coffee, vibe and service here since the first time. It's the place where you can come alone with all comfortable feeling.
A.
Not bad
R.
Incredible coffee, and sprouted lentil bread is out of this world. Had the spinach and poached slow cooked egg - amazing!!!!
H.
Stylish vibe, the food is a taste sensation and the staff are fantastic.
J.
Cosy, amazing service and top notch food and coffee. O the Buffalo milk coffee is legendary! They also have their own needs hives!
S.
Went for happy hour - small bites and beer - which were all scrumptious. Wish we had come here for breakfast too the next day!
M.
Very interesting and unusual menu combinations. I guess the staff was having an off day as the service was nothing to write about (and yet here I am writing about it. Go figure).
D.
My favorite coffee place in Ponsonby. And I love going their for brunch too! Highly recommended.
D.
Late visitor but very welcoming obliging service well thought out menu and wine list. Will return
A.
Very expensive considering the size of the meals.
J.
Delicious and creative food. Great coffee.
Let down by terrible service. I felt I was a nuisance to inattentive staff.
R.
Went last night. The food was lovely. I would give it a 5 star rating but the hostess/waitress was a bit rude.
K.
'Simply' presented, simply irresistibly tasty.
Coffee has punch as well👊
J.
Amazing place. They treat breakfast as if it was a gastronomic “evening” experience and it is absolutely brilliant.

Orphans radiates a warmth of spirit characteristic of New Zealanders as a people and the food defines New Zealand gastronomy at its best.
