Excellent dining experience. Warm service. Food was great. love the Oven snapper on risotto, love it. Seafood pasta really worth. The sticky date pudding was Excellent. Just wondering why so many cutlery.

2nd visit to SPQR and it was just as delicious as the first time. Service is good and the menu has something for everyone. Don't skip dessert either, the sticky date pudding was amazing.

I know SPQR is one of Auckland’s OG fine dining hot spots. It took me ten years to finally hit them up since so many new restaurants pop up on a regular basis .. I have to say, it’s not up to the standard I expected but was still pretty good overall. The ambiance is really nice, and the service was excellent. But I had mixed standards with the food overall. The bread was nice as a starter but the calamari came out lukewarm, lacking flavour and some pieces a bit chewy. Calamari is a dish that really sings when done well, but you really can’t hide when it’s done bad. This really didn’t hit the mark. I ordered my steak rare and it came out exactly that, perfectly cooked. However, the steak had zero seasoning .. again, lacking in flavour. Loved the dessert, though. Sticky date pudding.. so good. All in all, it was decent. I get why it was once a top spot but I think the Auckland food scene has matured a lot in recent years and I’d probably not rush back.

Just sensational! Incredibly short-staffed but, the food was exquisite, the service impeccable and the dining experience was unforgettable! Big ups to the staff who worked their collective arses off! Go there, you'll love it!

Outstanding, I came to here with friends for my birthday meal. We had wonderful service and the quality of food was some of the best I had in while. Thank you for making my night great I had a lovely time and so did my friends. I will return and highly recommend the creme brulee and the fettuccine.

Lovely place to dine on Ponsonby road. Dimly lit, it provides an intimate dining experience. Standout dishes were the Cajun pizza & Chicken fettuccine. Service with a smile to top it up. Not very pricey so worth a check out. No wonder they have been in business since 1992. All the best SPQR. Cheers to more gr8 meals!.

Excellent meal, service and cocktails. Every dish was flavoursome, good size and delicious. Cocktails were all excellent and arrived very promptly. Service was friendly and attentive but not overbearing. Great atmosphere even on a Monday. Was a special meal and will definitely be going back when next in Auckland.

Loved it, the atmosphere, food and service. Recommended for a date night out. I don't know why the price in Google shows as $$$, as the prices are like any other restaurant in Auckland. So if you are wondering, maybe check the menu but for us the price was ok.

I had the pleasure of dining at the legendary SPQR this evening. Leave any trepidation at the door before you walk in and experience this amazing establishment. You will find comprehensive food and drinks menus that selecting from will be your only quandary for the evening - as to choose only one and denying yourself the other delectable sounding offerings almost feels unjust. My choices did not disappoint... ohh they did not disappoint. And clearly, looking around, the other guests inside the restaurant were not disappointed either. The atmosphere was that of delight and exuberance - just what we all need to feel as of late. Listen attentively and you will hear the funky bass beats subtly emitting from the high quality sound system - adding to the ambiance without any compromise on class. Definitely feeling that Saturday evening vibe whilst dining here. If you are lucky enough to have your table served by Jason (our waiter) you will experience a caliber of customer service scarcely found in restaurants across this city. When talking to you, Jason makes you feel like you're the only person in the room. When it came to taking the obligatory group selfies at our table, Jason stood by, even pulling out his own phone - with torch illuminated holding it above us with his arm outstretched to give our photos even better lighting. I mean, who does that?! Well done Jason, you took a beautiful dining experience to the next level and made it an exemplary one. I genuinely hope the owners of the restaurant know the asset you are and your worth to their business. Dining at SPQR will be a pleasure you will not easily forget. One of the best locations of Auckland city, Ponsonby is a great neighborhood. This bar restaurant translates very well what Ponsonby vibe represents. A bit more expensive than the restaurants around but food is yummy with many healthy choices. We ordered pizza and chicken caesar salad which was really fresh and delicious. Friendly and competent staff. Chairs aren't very comfortable but loved the candles everywhere.

Great food and wine backed up with great service. Often with 7 people wanting to share, the response is - no. At SPQR it was not a problem and they went out of their way to ensure we were happy. A great atmosphere with great food and great wine and great service - you must dine here when you are in Auckland.

First time to this institution...Excellent food...shared the smoked fish pate...mozzarella salad and bread to start then sadly out of Lasagne so had the papadelle bolognese and a chicken pizza. Topped off with sticky date pudding and tiramisu. (There was 2 of us to be clear!!). All the food was superb...generous portions without being over the top. Waiter was Excellent... the best service in a long time. We will be back...thank you!!!

I first went to SPQR in 2007 and had a wonderful meal. Just revisited in in 2019 and it's just as good. The restaurant even made a portion adjustment for me on a pasta so I could try more food while traveling alone.

At first we were wandering not knowing exactly what to eat. When the waiter at the front let us look at the menu and told us the specials we agreed, but still weren't 100% in on having Italian food for dinner. At the first bite, we all knew we'd made the right decision. The risotto was delicious, the pasta El dente, the snapper perfectly cooked. The staff were awesome, friendly, funny and engaging. The music and atmosphere was energetic but relaxed at the same time. And the sticky date pudding. God. The sticky date pudding. Perfect. We had high expectations for my Fiancé’s birthday dinner but there were a few things that can be improved. I work in hospo and I felt that the service wasn’t the best for us. Our waitress was attentive but didn’t feel warm. A genuine smile or greeting would have been nice. The only person that was friendly was the guy running the food and drinks. However, food service came on time but just making sure that the customer is at home would have topped everything off. We had the eye fillet, truffle mash, broccolini and carbonara. The only thing with the carbonara was that It needed salt, the chicken wasn’t seasoned that well my Fiancé who is a chef noticed as-well however, the sauce was nice and creamy. Everything else we had was just delightful perfectly cooked and the best truffle mash we had. We definitely recommend the eye fillet. I had the margarita on the rocks, absolutely loved it, sweet and refreshing. We also tried the creme brûlée and pudding, these were simple yet perfect, the custard in the creme brûlée was so velvety and smooth and we loved the pudding as it had soo much richness. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with dimly lit candles, I recommend not sitting next to the door on a cold night as it is a bit chilly and recommend sitting further in the restaurant my partner didn’t mind tho. Overall, thank you for the nice experience will definitely come back to try more dishes.

Very impressed by this place. Have dined here a few times now. Visited last week with my girlfriend and we were both very impressed. Lovely European man with long hair welcomed us and looked after us all evening, checking in with us and giving exceptional service. The Italian waitress was also attentive and lovely. Food was well cooked, well seasoned and very very nice overall. A little disappointed that they sell pacific oysters at 30$ for half a dozen but i can understand this is pretty standard market prices at a restaurant. You guys should definitely try to get bluff oysters in. Awesome work guys, keep it up:)

An absolute MUST when visiting Auckland. This is my favourite spot for a long lunch with friends or for treating myself to cocktails and oysters alone at the bar. The staff are always amazing and the people watching is fantastic. I had the crayfish ravioli last time and can't wait to go back. Would definitely recommend.

Hadn't been here for some years and went with some girlfriends midweek and were not disappointed. Had a table by the fire - service was good, food tasty and ambience pleasant. We all commented that we hadn't been for a while and must come back with our husbands. Some random waiters served us at the beginning, service started to improve when one guy came consistently around. Crayfish ravioli was average. Meat platter of cold cuts was okay. Lamb was great but fish stew was completely under performance. The seafood tasted fresh but the sauce was almost bland. Couldn’t take any meaningful pictures cause the place was really dimmed. Can hardly read the menu. I would rate something 3.8.

Beautiful food at this restaurant. Unfortunately our waiter was very condescending but we didn't let that spoil a wonderful evening. Great ambience. Perhaps the waiter could have told us the price of the oysters when he offered them as a special on the menu. Probably wouldn't have bought them at $66.00 per dozen. Great location in Ponsonby with good indoor/outdoor flow.

Love this place and its always a go to for us. The food and service is always amazing. Favourites are the Gnocchi and Sticky Date Pudding. Its always very busy as its so popular, so would recommend getting there early if you don't have a reservation.

This place has such a nice atmosphere, we did not plan to go there. Somehow, we went inside to have a look and had an amazing cocktails at the bar. It’s not that easy to have a good espresso martini, well made, pleasure to drink, thanks to Yriy. As we felt so welcomed in that place, not being very hungry, we asked for a table outside to have a dinner and we waited like 3-5 min before seated. And the crab spaghetti I had,as a starter, surprised me in a good way, such a simple beautiful dish, bravo to the chef. Wine selection is good, we had Chardonnay it was a fantastic wine. Great service , music is a wonderful treat through out the time you are there. Recommended and I will go back there again definitely!!!

An oldey, but a goody! Although I must say of late some of the staff seem pretty condescending, if not rude. Which has really dropped this from a 5⭐️ review to only 3⭐️. I have often stopped in here for a big meal and drinks night or lazy lunches with friends when I used to live here in New Zealand, and it has been an old favourite over the years when I return to visit. It was a great place to come and have a good meal, good cocktails and a good location to watch the passers by on Ponsonby Rd. Kind of a worn retro style place (80’s😆), slightly eclectic seating, outside options, Italian fusion style menu, cocktail list, craft and normal beers. The staff used to be part of the fun and we would often buy them drinks later in the night. Now it’s like they are on some kind of trip to tease or be condescending to the customers. Word to the management, sack half of them, and build a great fun happy staff base like you had before. I have seen the menu, prices, management and staff change over the last 25 or so years. All of those changes have been between easily or somewhat acceptable. These current staff may have cost you all of our business. Your choice Bosses.

Great service and they do really well with meat dishes. I love the dark atmosphere also. However... I think they overcook the scallop dish they serve as part of the set lunch - come on guys, the 1980s were a couple of decades ago. Why ruin a plump, juicy shellfish by killing it under parmesan and a hot grill. Are they not as fresh as they should be? I also agree with a previous reviewer. Creative vegetarian (vegan!) meal options is one of the reasons I eat out. They win favour over any medium rare steak - which anyone can cook at home - yet SPQR is still avoiding including them in restricted menus. I couldn't bring my friends here for a night out. Anyone can eat vegetarian food but not everyone can eat meat so it just seems like a no brained to me.

Good food, real good. But main restaurant area is too dark, they even bring you a menu lamp when ordering. At one point I had to give my lamp to the table next door as the had run out (or were flat as or had to be replaced when it went flat) of lamps. Also had to deal with smokers as well,although they were outside the doors stay open and the horrid smoke was drifting back through.

Eye fillet steak carpaccio is my constant favorite. I like this dish here the most of all. It's a truly memorable raw meat dish, probably the best in Ponsonby and has been so all this century. The SPQR classics menu is the most consistent heritage menu offered in Auckland. Everything is 100% savory and delicious. This is one of the finest brasseries in New Zealand.

Always been a favourite, great thin crust pizzas and PLENTY of parmesan on hand...although not the strongest parmy, still great. Staff can be a bit snobby at times, but it's Ponsonby for Gods sake...prcing is the killer, but you have to limit the people through the door somehow I suppose. Order a couple of bottles of Champagne and you'll be searching for the other card...LOL. Still very nice to visit from time to time.
