Reviews of Tanuki Japanese Restaurant | Auckland City
S.
Awesome food. Got the chefs platter of sashimi. Quite expensive but definitely worth the money-the five fish we were served were exceptional, and the platter layout was beautiful. The atmosphere was awesome and it made you feel as though you had been transported to Japan in the space of a few seconds. For drinks-I had the green tea which maybe needed slightly more flavour, but aside from this everything was of exceptional quality. The chefs and wait staff were also really helpful
D.
Great food, very fresh and reasonable pricing for a nice night out.
L.
Awesome food, Awesome place. Great service, my son introduced me to this spot. Love the plumb wine. Can't wait to go back soon and try some more dishes and drinks :) keep up the great vibe and superb service and thank you all for the delicious items on the menu !
S.
We had wonderful, friendly service. The food was beautifully presented and tasted delicious.
B.
Very good and friendly service. Food taste okay
G.
Nice and busy Japanese restaurant.
On Queen Street in Auckland CBD.
Sushi 🍣 are nice.
A.
Sushi over here is incredible, and if you are a fan - you cannot go wrong with this place. Even if the range is not that wide - anything you choose will be finger licking. Cheese on the sticks was very good. One thing that was a bit surprising- we didn’t finish our salmon and asked to pack it away with us. We were given an empty plastic box, to do it ourselves :)
D.
My daughter selected this restaurant as it was near Aotea Hall where she had her Graduation ceremony and very centrally located in CBD. Ambience is very cosy and relax with the Japanese interior. We were seated in the corner at ground floor which makes our dining experience quite private inspite of the full house on the other half of the restaurant. We choose to order sharing plates by our group of 7 people consisting of a variety of meats and vegetables complimented by hit sale and green teas. The food are very delicious and customer service is great and prompt. Prices are very reasonable and I would definitely come back again. Very memorable night for me and my family
P.
Came here during closing hours and staffs are still quite nice and friendly. Delicious food and price are okay.
B.

A.
Friendly staff and very fresh sashimi there!
One of my favorite restaurant in Auckland👍

I would have rated this place higher but the service we received wasn't very friendly and inviting. The food was beautiful and fresh and the portion sizes were good value for money. I especially enjoyed the spicy tuna roll, the tuna was melt it your mouth...so yummy!! We come to Auckland regularly on holiday and decided to give this place a go. All the places we have dined in for lunch and dinner so far on our holiday have given us outstanding and really friendly service, I have been really impressed....that is until upon entering this restaurant. The young asian boy that greeted us was not very welcoming or friendly, I got the impression that he was over working in this place and simply didn't want to be there. We had to wait quite some time for our food and drink order to be taken. I could understand the wait if it was busy but it wasn't. When we did get our drinks from the young boy working on the bar they were blonked on the table with no smile or acknowledgement..it was a very sour response. The restaurant didn't at all seem like a happy vibrant place. Aside from the unfriendly service we received from the two young boys the little bit of service we got from a young asian girl was friendly and it would have been a more pleasurable dining experience if we had received service from her all night. One other recommendation is to have Japanese music playing as this adds to the authenticity of the overall dining experience in a Japanese restaurant. We won't be coming back to this restaurant again and won't be recommending it to anyone. You get one shot at wooing customers and this place blew it. Hey...with all the endless restaurant choices in Auckland why would we return?
N.
Love the aesthetic here, service was great and food was delicious
B.
Fabulous Food
Lovely wait staff
I eat here regularly when I go to a concert in the Town Hall, like so many other people. It pays to book on a concert night. I'm not the only one who loves this restaurant.

We booked the private dining room for my partner's birthday. Staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. The room was great and the decor felt like we were in Japan again. Because we were a big group it was really nice to see the Manager allowing complementary Sake shots for some of us, which added to the overall experience. The food was nice, the portion probably on the smaller side for what you paid but that's ok, we came for the experience. Thank you Momo and Team for a great evening! :)
T.
I've been coming to Tanuki's Cave for 20+years, there is always a wait for a seat at the bar, but its always worth the wait. The music, the ambience are the perfect backdrop to the tasty selection of yakitori. It doesn't matter what you order, it's all good!
E.
Really tasty wholesome Japanese food. The service is very good. Older style restaurant that could do with a renovation but no complaints when the food is so good
G.
I’ve had sushi all over the world, including in japan. This is some of the best, hands down. The nigiri cuts of fish are generous, and the flavors of the fish are superb. We also had a couple of the desserts, which are also excellent. I don’t drink but my friend really enjoyed the warm sake. I’m only in New Zealand for 10 days. But I will definitely be going here again during that time.
m.
Great food and absolutely great service. We had an event to go to after dinner and the staff made sure we got everything in time.
J.
The food is well displayed and the atmosphere is quite nice. Pricing is on the slightly expensive side, this is close to a fine dining place. Expect to need at least a few items each for a complete meal. Staff are very friendly and attentive.
C.
Popcorn chicken had great flavour. The steak was cooked beautifully, tender and juicy. Chicken skewers, pork skewers, crumbed oysters and sausages were great too. Was just lacking some punchy flavors. Lack of extra condiments like sweet chilli, ginger, spices etc. We had to ask for some mayo on a small side dish. That's all though. Overall the vibe was great. Service was awesome, staff friendly and efficient. It's a small space but accommodates to different size groups and pairs. Asahi black draft beer on tap was very good! Would recommend.
D.
Fantastic food and service with a very authentic feel to the restaurant, highly recommend if you like your Japanese food. Also good selection of Sake 😅
B.
Location was nice. Service was friendly and quick. Food was excellent in presentation and flavour. Could be the best Sushi I've ever eaten so far. Definitely in my top3. Would be a regular in this restaurant, if I lived here for sure!
Will gladly come back on my next trip to Auckland. :-)
L.
Had a fantastic dinner ,it was my son 21st. He just wanted something small . The staff were amazing ,food was super yummy. Love this place definitely go back.
N.
A cozy cute Japanese sushi bar where you can watch the chefs prepare delicious meals in front of you if you're at the bar. Prepare to spend like most sit down places in Auckland. The warmed up sake is delicious and hits the spot after a long day of sightseeing or work. Decor is great. It's the environment and ambience that really makes it a winner.
B.
Visiting from out of town and happened to grab dinner at Tanuki. We shared the nigiri platter as well as an order of eel rolls and I had some warm sake for myself. Everything was delicious and the nigiri portions were very generous.
Definitely recommend!
K.
Have been dining at Tanuki's since I was a teenager. I rate all of the food, but recently had the best tofu dish, I have tried anywhere, NZ or overseas (including Japan).
Lovely friendly staff and nice atmosphere ☺👌
A.
I came here alone while not many people were eating here. Food was very tasty😄Good service.
t.
We have visited Tanuki's over the years and always loved it. However, since moving to Northland, our trips to AKL aren't as frequent. In December, we came down to meet with friends for an early Christmas dinner and were looking forward to Sushi at Tanuki's. Did they recently change hands? Because we all left very disappointed. The servings were smaller than we experienced in the past and the Nigiri Sushi hardly had any rice at all!? Seriously... It was just a dab of rice! I'm hoping that the experience was a one off, but for the cost of the meals, I think we'll be looking for another favourite spot.
E.
Sakebar on the left and Tanuki on the right. They are separate restaurants though maybe same owner technically maybe. I ate at Sakebar and picked up some robata from Tanuki. It was just okay to me but definitely a cherishable Japanese restaurant in this region of the standard so that 5 stars.
J.
Great food, served quickly, (we were going to a concert). Watching the chefs at work is like having a floor show!
m.
Always excellent.... great location, great service, wonderful beer selection and most important of all- truly fantastic food
H.
Food was great we enjoyed our dinner there. One thing that annoyed me was you guys kept your tab water running constantly possibly during the entire night. This is unacceptable guys. Please save water.
E.
Best restaurant I've been to. Lovely atmosphere with friendly staff and most importantly, divine food! It is a bit small and can get quite loud when full, but that adds to the experience. Overall, highly reccomended.
P.
I love oyster
S.
Tanuki's is AMAZING. We come here any time we have a show to go to in Auckland City and the service has always been excellent. The food comes out super fast and tastes divine. The broccoli and the karaage chicken is always a must have.
J.
This is my go-to for upper Queen Street Japanese. Diligent staff, warm and cosy atmosphere with sumo on the TV. It feels like neighbourhood sushi in Japan. Great quality, sake menu, and rotating monthly menu.
M.
Wow. We popped in but accident (actually meant to go to the yakatori bar underneath) and although we thought the place wasn't open (because the for was closed) we went in and had a great meal. The beer, sale and food for two came to around 100 and we loved everything about it
P.
Tanuki's is a longstanding favourite of mine that combines a charming traditional Japanese interior decor with excellent service, a good range of high-quality food, and all at reasonable prices. It is perfect for business lunches, friend get-togethers, and romantic dates. Best option for parking in in the Civic carpark, or the Greys Ave council carpark during the evening.
N.
totally delicious and high quality food. eclectic clientele, awesome centrally located bar, dim lighting throughout the restaurant, and friendly staff. quick service.
M.
“Great tempura”
Great Japanese restaurant, sushi is so fresh and tasty with a great variety, my favourite though was the tempura that was very good especially the egg plant tempura. The ambience in this restaurant is really good as it is very similar to the Izakaya Restaurants in Japan.
C.
Delicious food and helpful waitress. Pleasant atmosphere given I was alone. Staff were pleasant but just didn’t seem happy.
J.
Great for work functions, lots of food and selection. Highly recommended.
S.
Always a good night here
E.
Great intimate vibe, good yakitori, but the service is a little slow. Worth the visit, great for a date.
M.
Fabulous food at a reasonable price. You absolutely must try the oysters in their lovely cheese sauce, its devine. You cant go wrong with anything on the menu!
S.
Great food and friendly staff. Would go there again. The sashimi was very fresh and both our children enjoyed the meals.
O.
fantastic sushi, albeit the menu for item items rather small. you can get what nigiri you want (ie tuna, snapper, shrimp) if you ask. Fantastic and enthusiastic service. will certainly return in due course
G.
The overall experience was very good...however the large sushi-sashimi platter for $49 was very shy of both the sashimi and sushi...at $2 a piece it was up there and it never works out for 2 or 4 especially when asked is it ok for 4...sushi plates were good but others like tempura etc were 5 pieces for 4?..anyway drinks were good...
N.
Amazing food and amazing experience! Oh my goodness. Great egadashi tofu! The broccoli is to die for.
V.
The food is prepared with talent and it's delicious. The place attracts an eclectic mix of people and it's dark and attractive. Highly recommended.
J.
This place is one of my favourites, amazing selection of varied Japanese dishes. Miso glazed eggplant, tofu steaks, sashimi dishes etc
J.
Awesome sushi.
It's an art (and fun) watching the maestro making your dinner in front if you.
Great place and absolutely recommendated.
N.
Delicious food! Umame abound. Vibrant atmosphere and great host/owner/chef. I highly recommend. Arigato gozaimasu
J.
Fantastic service, meal and wine selection. Definitely lived up to the ratings.
R.
The food is always really good here. Friendly service. Really close to the q theatre
J.
The food is delicious with plenty of choices and their Sake choice is really great! Definitely a good place.
E.
Thought the menu was a little limited, amount of sushi rice on the sushi was miniscule but the food tastes great and am very happy with $10 house sake.
J.
Had a fantastic meal, service was great and really fast, even though they were packed due to the comedy festival.
a.
