Reviews of The Don
H.
A cheap-eat Japanese restaurant tucked away on High St. Staff was not very welcoming at the start but the rest of the service was fine.
The pork katsu was my favourite out of the 3 donburi. Teriyaki salmon was alright too but was a bit bland. Karaage chicken was a disappointment, chicken was not crispy at all and the whole donburi was tasteless.
The prawn sushi was OK. Overall average food.
An upside is the cheap price and the big menu with lots of options to choose from.
The interior is quite nice as well, gives a legit Japanese restaurant vibe.
K.
Reasonably priced, typical Izakaya setup, can get quite busy, service a little slow.
Foods are generous in size, taste good, good selection of sakes, which I don’t see much around here.
C.
This has quickly become my favourite Japanese place in Auckland. It’s a bit hard to find but we were quickly seated by attentive staff and served delicious green tea. The food is excellent and I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. We’ve enjoyed sashimi, sushi rolls, karaage chicken don, kakiage tempura udon, and chicken Katsu. The udon broths are my favourite, as well as the miso soup. Highly recommend and excellent value.
T.
This is one of my most visited places in the CBD for casual Japanese food. Over the years my top three meals to order have been :
- Japanese style steak Don
- Karaage Don
- Karaage Udon
I also get their Chazuke with marinated octopus or plum occasionally, which is great to go with some salmon shashimi.
S.
One of my favorite spots in the CBD. Food is always fresh, hot and delicious. They also have amazing lunch deals too for around $13, super affordable which is amazing especially in this current climate. If you're going in peak times it may be worth ringing and booking a table as we didn't once before and couldn't get a table.
W.
Great place to eat, all the food is very nice and loads of options to choose from. Great place to come with a group!
J.
I usually have a good experience here but I wasn't impressed with the curry, it was a little too plain and underwhelming. Left me feeling I could have done a better job myself. Service was good and the staff are friendly.
G.
Love the food here, lovely pork katsu curry. My usual place for japanese comfort food. Value for money too.
S.
I've enjoyed eating here for years because the food is reasonably priced, staff members are friendly, and service is quick. The donburi range is most recommended.
N.
I LOVE this place. The staffs are very friendly. Food came out at a timely mannger.
The food is DELICIOUS and amazing value for money. I will definitely be a regular visitor!
K.
Really tasty Japanese food! A must visit if you're a fan of takoyaki. Very friendly and welcoming staff and good selection of drinks too! Great place for a date or dinner with friends.
K.
My go-to dishes here are the Katsu Chicken with Egg Don and the Spicy Crispy Chicken Don! The Curry Beef Udon I tried for the first time recently and it’s good too. They have a really wide variety on their menu.
The staff are friendly and efficient. Tables are quite close together so it can be a little cramped sometimes!
K.
Love the tofu options and the side salads, yummy food at a good price! Highly recommended :)
In the pic: tofu teriyaki (comes with a small non-veg soup, I just leave it behing and enjoy the tofu bowl)
R.
A decent place to catch up with friends with cheap Japanese food. The atmosphere has much to be desired. I would recommend the Katsu Chicken Don and the soda plum wine. Unfortunately ‘The Don’ has stopped doing BYO so with drinks meals can get expensive. Otherwise, food is decent!
C.
The Don is fantastic. Very delicious meals and great value. They have a large menu and lunch specials for groups. What's also nice is the little call button on the table you can use to call if you require any service. They can get busy around lunch time but I've never had to wait for a table or long for the meal. I just keep coming back for more hear, too tasty to pass up!
X.
We are the regulars of the don. We really like the food. But the reason I give them this five stars is their practices in reaction to COVID-19. They actively prevent the lockdown again by instruct yoy to scan qr code. Keep the tables seperated. And every staff is wearing a mask. It makes you feel safe to eat here!
S.
Table service is a bit slow, we've had to call over wait staff and ask for water a few times. Food is fast and delicious though, prices are great! They have some gluten free items on menu and the waitress understands gluten intolerance, they have gluten free soy sauce. No wheel chair access that I can see. I like the green tea ice cream here, reminds me of the ones I had by Meiji Shrine by Harajuku.
i.
I like the atmosphere of this tiny hide away place in the middle of the city. Foods are nice and well priced compare to some other places in CBD. Fast and lovely service. Could be better with a couple more choices~
C.
Delicious reasonably priced food. The staff were really friendly. I have been back multiple times. It does get busy during dinner time so I would suggest booking if you don't want to wait.
T.
Excellent customs services. Our udon was not fully cooked, the waiter was very polite and really sorry about it and took it back.
Food are all good.
K.
One of my favourite lunch places. I've tried the bento, salmon sashimi don and the spicy chicken and everything was great but the crispy skin of the chicken is my new go to.
L.
Excellent customer service and lovely food. We always come here for Don when we crave Japanese food. We ordered Takoyaki, Sauce Katsu Don, Chicken Karaage.
Really love their chicken karaage which was so crispy outside and the chicken was so tinder inside. Yum yum!!
I.
Solid meal at a good price. Rice was not brilliant but the chicken was great. Lovely atmosphere, huge effort has been put into the decoration. Trendy and focused on students and a younger working crowd.
J.
We’ve been coming here for over 10 years and we still go regularly. The food is yummy and well priced. Food comes quickly and there are plenty of options. A nice place to go when you want to some casual Japanese food but don’t want to pay a whole heap
M.
Excellent place for authentic Japanese food and affordable prices. The takowasa was a real gem. We also enjoyed the rice bowls and sashimi.
The shop accepts card and cash.
E.
We went to The Don on a Wednesday and I tried the daily special: Sauce Katsu Don with Chicken for $13.50. The dish was very good and price is reasonable. The dish had a savory taste to it from the sauce and the crispy texture and feel of the chicken complemented it. The miso soup that came with the dish was also good. Just make sure you drink it first, it won't taste good if it gets cold.
A.
This has to be the best place to eat at, great pricing and the food is always fresh!
M.
Impressed with staff knowledge & courtesy with dietary requirements. Ordered from main menu, not knowing they have a separate vege/vegan menu. FOH thoughtfully pointed out that my initial choice had fish sauce in it & gave me the vegan menu to choose from. Really appreciated that! Loved the food & even their drinks. Will definitely be back!
G.
This is my favourite donburi place in Auckland. There are a lot of donburi choices on the menu, along with soba and other Japanese dishes. Since this restaurant is also an izakaya (Japanese pub), you can also order alcohol, they have a decent range, and pair it with a variety of interesting drinking snacks.
A.
Really good portions for affordable prices. Staff and service area both really good. Great place for lunch as the service is quick and it's in a good location
S.
Always perfect food, as you would expect from the restaurant name their donburi bowls are excellent. My favourites are the Teriyaki steak and Katsu chicken
Staff are friendly and efficient, couldn't be happier and will keep coming back, especially considering how affordable it is!
R.
Lovely little place. Perfect serving size and delicious. My husbands meal lacked flavour (egg chicken katsu) but he still ate it and just used some of my meat to flavour it. What you would expect to pay price wise. Definitely be going back again
A.
The meat was juicy, and the amount of sauce and rice come in equal proportion.
But it'd have been nice if there's a bit of vege, like broccoli or even frozen peas or carrot would be nice.
C.
It’s a lovely restaurant, a bit hard to find it,but I always feel relax dining here. It’s really chill, also good place hanging out with friends
s.
Awesome food and kinds staff .
Very delicious and good price^^
J.
Extremely moist chicken (we ordered chicken katsu and karaage). Food is steaming hot, super tasty and super filling! Friendly staff, quick service and comforting atmosphere. Would 10/10 visit again.
E.
Great decorations, delicious food and friendly staff. I got the teriyaki chicken udon noodle soup (bottom) and my dad got the teriyaki chicken bento box (top), I highly recommend both!
M.
Offers a different very affordable lunch option each day
P.
It's close to work and I often have lunch here. Lunch special is very good, cheap and delicious.
S.
Super cool little Japanese restaurant. Lovely helpful staff and happy to cater to bigger groups. The food was delicious and came out pretty quick! Their cocktail specials were yum too. Would definitely come back
L.
Great value for money with above average Japanese food. Good option for a not-so-rowdy BYO
h.
Wonderful food and ambience at a great price!
A.
One of the best Gyudons I have in Auckland - a must try. Also, the place is quite small so if you're planning to go there as a group, book early.
M.
i had takoyaki and niku udon(you can choose chicken or pork. I chose chicken one). VERY TASTY!
H.
This is an amazing option not only for the price, but for the quality of food.
I know there are people who look for low prices for some good quality food, this is what you are looking for. Good food at a minimal price, you can fees yourself for for only about 13 dollars, left 80% full.
This food was great, I chose the pork fried katsu I think, and it was quite delicious, the pork was dry but it was flavourful with a generous amount of Japanese mayo and "takoyaki sauce like" spread on the pork. The salad is boring, not much, but it does come with a misi on the side, it does help ease the flavours of the mayo and brings a nice balance.
The area is cozy and a nice well lit place that gives an old fashioned vibe/atmosphere. It's nice to be in a different place to contrast with the modern city it is in. It is small, but doable.
Customer service was just OK, not great but not terrible, they don't seem excited maybe just nervous, but not too talkative, and they speak quietly, but the food came reasonably quick. No issues with the server, no miscommunication, and things went smoothly.
M.
Great place to drink🍺. Good food and great service, a lot to choose from but looove their kaisen don. Reasonable prices.
J.
Great Japanese food and really quick service🙌🏻😊
S.
One of my favourite Japanese restaurant in the CBD area. Whenever I go here, I always go for the Crispy Spicy Chicken Don ever since it was introduced to the menu. I like how the staff are always attentive to you and they know how to make you feel welcome. It is also a good place to hangout at as they have large tables to accommodate you and your group of friends. Go and have a taste here!!!
j.
The Don is legit. The food is fresh, comes out quick and is well priced (especially for the city). We will definitely be back.
L.
We keep coming back to this place with my husband, it's definitely a staple. Lovely atmosphere, the food is great and well priced. Service is friendly. Highly recommend it.
o.
fancy japanese restaurant to have foods with some alcohol
G.
Very tasty, and quite cheap. Super fast service, and the staff are nice and friendly. It can feel crowded however, with how close the tables are together. Very much recommend their donburi!
C.
Excellent food. Busy so you know it's good 😉
f.
Great sushi and Japanese options. Like the Dennys of Japanese... menu is very clear. Great place to take the family for a different dinner option without breaking the bank. Staff are super nice and helpful with questions.
N.
Some of the best Chicken katsu in Auckland!!! my favourite Japanese place to go to for years before Ippudo opened in New Market. You can trust that The Don always does a nice meal and is really good value for money :D
J.
The Don has a fun, buzzing atmosphere. They do excellent sashimi for a good price, their rolls are awesome, and they have some very nice sake
R.
Went there for causal dinner. Nice hide away Japanese Restaurant, hard to find if you are not looking for it. Small dishes where you can have a variety of different things. The food was not bad, i.e. the raw beef, seafood pancake, and karraga chicken. But the grilled/cooked food came out with boiled veg and tasteless potato mash, which we found hard to eat... They have specials all the time, and the whole menu was relatively cheap for a nice Japanese restaurant in city.
N.
Good food, reasonably priced.
J.
Cosy space for some good Japanese style food, staff were friendly and polite and the food was amazing especially my favourite Takoyaki
J.
Best restaurant japanese style Miso ramen uses miso paste made of soybeans as the seasoning. Originally created in Hokkaido, Miso ramen has a very strong flavor as the miso paste is creamy and tangy. The broth is also chicken and pork-based and has a much darker brown and heavy taste making it a very hearty and filling meal. The flavor changes depending on the type of miso paste used so miso ramen is very versatile and goes well with many different types of ingredients and toppings. The noodles and soup broth can be served hot or cold and the broth has a variety of different taste and ingredient options
A.
Fantastic.. Just as I wanted. Oyakodon. Would go again for the grill squid.
B.
Went into the bathroom, was crazy. Was a bucket and there was living species inside of it. Must of been something like their home brew or something liked that. Hey guys just keep it up I will give you five stars however mohit will come and be the judge.
B.
Great for any sort of Japanese meal whether you want to have your own dish or shared plates, izakaya style.
Spicy Chicken Don and Namban Chicken are among my favourites but they have a very wide variety to choose from. Plus they also serve Plum Wine 👌🏻
(Note: there is no Ramen here, the closest you get is Udon)
S.
One of the best places to have Don. I ordered the teriyaki don and it was great.
P.
Been coming here every Friday evening for the last 3/4months. We always have chicken katsu curry double meat and kara age don double meat. Served by Mana a friendly polite customer focused server. A great place with delish food and nice staff. Below Kara age don with double meat. friendly if not a little well acted service from the staff of witch there seems to be many. funky small underground feel thanks to Auckland's many hidden basements. really good food each time I've eaten here. I always go with the same friend, if I try to find the place myself I always get lost. I might have to leave a trail of crumbs next time I`m there.
B.
Not bad for food itself taste......#however# there’s few things u might wanna consider. 1. in lunch time, not much of choice for tempura(only ebidon available). 2. Also, in lunch time, Not available for kaki fry(oyster fry). 3. Very few beer choice.....(No NZ beer/craft at all).
R.
Great authentic traditional Japanese food to be had, the ekonomiyaki and takoyaki were just like we had in Japan. Proper beer choices, and excellent range of dishes at great prices. My new favourite Japanese restaurant in Auckland.
O.
The Don is tucked away down a flight of stairs from the busy High St. Very reasonably priced, it is a cosy Japanese restaurant serving a variety of warm dishes and Sushi. I would recommend a large House Sake served hot to share, the Unagi Don (eel) is extremely tender and grilled, and the raw marinated beef is worth trying. Get a seat with a peek view of the kitchen!
R.
Fantastic foods. Great authentic Japanese dishes as well as some new takes on some old classics. The atmosphere is really nice. The service is also good.
C.
Great food and prices! Though had a little wait to order and again later on for more drinks and dessert... but otherwise lovely place
H.
I love this place. It's very autherntic, and the atmosphere is great. Fast, friendly service, good prices, and open late. It's my go-to.
J.
Very attentive staff, I had a great meal!!
C.
Tasty, cheap and efficient. Crispy Chicken Don was very tasty. Noticed you could just get the chicken with no rice for 45% of the price, which I would do if I returned.
C.
Good food good price good staff
A.
Great value food with an authentic experience and service to match. Would certainly recommend.
A.
Cozy atmosphere, wonderful food, and decent prices.
B.
Amazing food and atmosphere, great place to chill out with friends and have a few drinks.
A.
Favourite Japanese dining spot, one of the few places that puts egg on top of your katsudon and NOT those mayo and okonomiyaki sauces. Also the only place I've seen cheese katsu so far in Auckland which is my second favourite.
Tucked away in the back of the arcade shopping area. Only found it through exploring Queen street and High Street. Highly recommended!
B.
Filling donburi for a really far price in the centre of Auckland. Good service and fast. The spicy chicken was crumbed in some kind of spicy flakes that I had never tried, instead of the usual katsu. Would go back.
A.
Lovely Japanese restaurant which has a great selection of meals. Love the Don specials. and it's pretty convenient for lunch goers. Great and friendly service 👍
S.
Beautiful Food Lovely Staff not to expensive, there will always be people that complain but there those kinds of people
D.
Always great food and service. A nice array of seating arrangements available but be wary, they may not deliver a drink then try to charge you for it at the end.
N.
Always a pleasant visit, infact it's been mine and my husband's favourite place to go for food anytime were in city ever since our uni days. Great place great memories and excellent food & service
D.
Commenting only on takeaway. Decent and not overpriced. But.. I prefer others at this price point. Still would come back to try the dine in experience as it looks cozy and friendly staff.
D.
Nice food and ambience. It was quite surprising when the lighting dimmed after a while, which made the menus difficult to read. Thanks for offering student discounts by the way!
R.
Food price and portion are reasonable. Good taste. Seating is just like typical sushi bar.
C.
It's been 4 years since I last visited and it's still awesome.
D.
Food very nice flavour. Portion size ok for lunch. Would go back if more convenient.
Z.
Great place for a cheap but good feed. However, service is lacking as there were a number of times where the waitresses were not paying attention to the customers.
K.
Amazing food and very friendly staff. Best restaurant we went to in Auckland by far! Highly recommend to anyone who likes Japanese food :)
B.
Really good, authentic Japanese food. Highly recommend. Does close earlier than advertised though.
D.
Delicious Japanese food and though a small place, it's comfortable and pleasant eating place with very reasonable price on good serving sizes.
J.
Lunch special doesn't have much salad and the meat is quite dry. Well cooked but quite average tasting.
T.
Fantastic Japanese food Great service good size portions very friendly staff there are people that will always complain about something but there isn't anything to complain about at the Don it's AAA+
A.
Really lovely atmosphere, staff were lovely and food was really yummy. Would recommend :)
H.

A.

L.
We go here way too much, but it tastes so good and is pretty good value for money that we can't resist. Salmon aburi don is my favourite.
S.
First time here for lunch , the food is simply Outstanding , the presentation absolutely Top Shelf , will definitely be back soon , there will always be people that complain but there those kinds of people
A.
Yum. Good prices. Lovely service. More items available on dinner menu. Not BYO usually.
J.
Great casual lunch repreive from the monotony of office life. Accommodates small work groups with ad hoc seating. Wouldn't recommend for groups exceeding 6.
S.
Go here often with a friend and the food always bangs, servers are kind and its a lot of food for what you pay
P.
Decently priced Japanese Izakaya and donburi in the CBD. Pictured is the cheesy chicken don and chicken don with soft egg on top.
S.
Great place with great food.
M.

K.
Great food for a good price, I got the crispy spicy chicken don very tasty!
J.
Awesome food and very affordable. Definitely great if you are into Japanese.
J.
The Aburi salmon don was a bit of a disappointment. It didn't taste or look the same as the menu or previous times.
J.
Great food and very chill ambience
H.
Hidden little jem of High Street. The tables at the back are quite private. Try the cheesy iron for summer fusion goodness. A little disappointed by the size of the sides
I.
We come here all the time for special occasions and times where we don't know where to eat because we know that the food is always filling and amazing!
s.
This place is great, its not too expensive and the portions are reasonable , the atmosphere of this place is perfect for a small group or a couple.

Amazing japanese place to dine in
K.
(Translated) cheap! !! I don't say that the quality and the luxurious appearance are top notch, but I think it's amazing to maintain this quality at that price. I think The Don is the cheapest izakaya in Auckland that is open to the public. The restaurant has a wide variety of food and drinks, and is especially recommended for students. The taste is not bad, if you dare to say, the time when the store closes is early for an izakaya. The strongest as a bowl shop. Not recommended for special anniversaries or those seeking high quality even at high prices.

(Translated) Love this place very much. Favorite Japanese restaurant in CBD. I myself have not been to Japan, but the interior and atmosphere are very similar to videos about Japan. A large selection of dishes and affordable prices for the city center. Most often I take a bento with teriyaki salmon, which is enough to fill up.
