Went here for my birthday dinner during Restaurant Month and was very pleased with my meal. I had the Study of Beef and we had two sides but the broccolini side had a strange tasting sauce which we weren't too pleased with. Other than that my party had a good experience overall and the service was good too. I'd certainly go back here in future. Hopefully this place will be a Restaurant Month participant again next year!

We had been to The Grill for at least 10 times. If you want a good steak, it is the place to go. Their seafood is good too, but a little bit pricey. They have promotion every now and then, which is a good bargain

We came here with a group of 14 and was seated upstairs on the mezzanine floor. Service was top notch and the food was equally as good. I would recommend the Wagyu Black Origin Sirloin or Eye Fillet if you got $$. Duck fat chips 🍟 were also nice. Great birthday dinner! Decedent is an understatement, got greens to bring a little lightness to the meal, they were coated with butter hahaha so yum though. Great meat and cooked to perfection. Sauces and butter were awesome and the fries were so crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Would love to go again.

Absolutely fantastic place to have a celebratory dinner. We went there last night for my partner’s graduation and the food was beautifully balanced, perfectly seasoned and an absolute delight. This restaurant is as much the experience of dining as it is actual dining and it did not disappoint. Our waiter was incredible and she ensured that we had everything we needed when we needed it, as well as organising a celebratory “Congratulations” plate for my partner.
Definitely a special occasion place for us in terms of pricing, but you get what you pay for in experience. Will definitely head back for our celebratory dinner!

Went here 5th June for dinner, I can't wait to go back one day. Absolutely outstanding and we've been to a number of restaurants & food places nationwide. The waiters & bar staff were unquestionably some of the best I've come across, friendly, extremely helpful and service was A+. Thanks guys, I know the Grill will appreciate your professionalism and conduct, awesome.
I hate going into city places being a country person, but the atmosphere was relaxing and the first lady we walked into was awesome and very welcoming, seating us almost immediately with no reservation.
The food, beautiful we had the prawns & pork belly. (see photos) Dinner was Duck duck duck, & a crab dish, A+, lovely, and I wish we could have had seconds. Chefs working hard in the background there, thanks for that Chefs we really enjoyed the Kai last night.
The staff immediately noted & appropriately prepared food for my heavily pregnant partner - outstanding care and service there, and point to note they were immediately concerned with ensuring her food was prepared safely, you can't ask for more than that I thought, was very impressed how they jumped on this straight away with care and compassion towards her/us. This crew are on point.
The drinks flowing, I enjoyed too many beers. No problems getting drinks to and from the table.
Pudding was bliss, Cheesecake and I can't remember what the other one was, see photos. But a lovely way to end the meal.
Price wise? absolutely appropriate and fair for what you're getting kai and service wise. Those that would complain about it? shouldn't be in there simple as that. We are not rich and were out for a treat night, expected nothing less - in fact probably expected it to be more. Good price, well in line for what you are getting
I have no cons in all honesty, only thing I can say is we were staying at the Grand Hotel, so not sure how those that want to come in would go about parking as Auckland City is mental - I suppose you will park in the sky city parking, or taxi in.
Otherwise it went perfectly staying at the hotel, there is a door in and out to the Hotel foyer.
Otherwise, anyone that was serving us last night will know who we are from this review, thank you for an awesome dinner. I know we'll be back one day and it's a dinner we won't forget for sometime.

Very good menu and meal here at The Grill. The table staff are fabulous and very friendly. Exceptionally well cooked meats here with stunning sauces to go with them. That miso hollendaise is particularly heavenly. Onion rings a filthy bonus too. If you're in the area or staying at the adjoining hotels then you need to check this place out. Bookings recommended, especially weekends.

Came here for Christmas dinner. Atmosphere was nice but the restaurant was only half full. The set menu was good but portion was way too much - 7 different courses but each was in full portion. We would probably enjoyed it more if the portion was smaller so there will be room left for wine and to enjoy the dessert more (which was fantastic!). Service was attentive and fast.

Half a decade ago I first had the pleasure of dining at The Grill by Sean Connolly, in one of my most memorable and enjoyable meals in New Zealand. Now on the cusp of leaving for another shore, it seemed only fitting that I should make the pilgrimage to return.
The mood was different this time around; dining solo rather than with my companion, I was greeted warmly and then sat at a table which offered me full view of the kitchen. While in comparison I too felt similarly on display, I appreciated the position as it gave me such an insight into the operation.
The room is a fascinating flurry of white jackets, both behind the service counter and on the floor. In this scenario it is hard to know who is chef, and who is wait-staff as both are bedecked the same style. My waiter for the evening was an earnest young chap who was giving his best and didn’t put a foot wrong. I have also never dined at a fine-dining priced restaurant and been treated to Nirvana and Green Day blasted from the speakers. All well and fine, but not what one expects given the white tablecloths and polished sparkling glasses and moody elegant interior. Certainly gave me a chuckle.
On to the food; a welcome mushroom broth as an amouse bouche. Velvety and smooth, it set my palate up nicely for the meal to come. My Snow-Crab Cocktail was a retro, uplifted version of the familiar 70s prawn staple. Really well done dressing that let the crab come through without overpowering the delicate meat, a zing of citrus. The glassware was theatrical and fun but did seem to want to tip over if I wasn’t careful given its narrow base.
On to the main; I wanted to see what such a talented team could do with venison so I chose Peppered wild venison, celeriac puree, roast apples, sweet and sour sauce. Here’s where I feel The Grill takes liberties; at $49 I expect more of a complete dish than purely receiving the protein + sauce. No garnish, and the roast apple being another sauce, it was a very very delicious but also hideously expensive way to experience a beautiful cut of venison. I had chosen some onion rings to accompany as well for $12. The Grill goes for the dramatic thick-cut slices of onion for its rings; while pleasing to the eye these never eat as well as the greater surface volume means a longer cooking time, subsequently more grease absorbed and an oily eating experience.
My waiter had helped me choose an excellent red wine to go with this lavish main however, and I was in good enough spirits to choose the souffle to finish which was advertised to take 25 minutes. They weren’t wrong about the wait, but it was worth it. Dramatic and fluffy, the souffle held a hidden treasure of lemon syrup at its base while the berry sorbet to accompany was smooth and fresh. An espresso was just the night-cap I needed.
Still a magical place, the only thing I can say is that it must only be a special treat or occasion to justify the spend; sides at that price are to be shared for sure. There’s luxury, skill, but also liberty here. I’m glad I returned.

I give five stars very rarely but if I could I would give 6 for The Grill. The food is absolutely superb, the service is spot on, informative but natural. If dining for 2 for a special occassion reserve a circular corner booth, provides a wonderful intimacy even in the middle of the day. Cannot recommend the steak tartare too highly, there is a good reason it is one of their signature dishes. If you ever want to do the classic 3 hour lunch this is the place

Chefs appetizer was delicious; steak and Mac n cheese were delicious; blood orange sorbet tasty and the chocolate mousse soufflé was flavorful. Staff was efficient and friendly...albeit a bit rushed at the beginning. The soufflé was rushed resulting in half souffle and half not...but still flavorful. Music is loud trying to overcome conversation that a few items ordered were not quite right...a sambuca straight up was heard as a sambuca shot for example. Food deliciousness wins me over to return but those items resulted in a 4 instead of 5 rating.

The atmosphere of the dining room was good, but the narrow space made the seat uncomfortable and the noise in the next seat interrupted the quiet conversation.
The customer has the advantage of choosing the source of the main menu, but the salad must be ordered at an additional cost.

We enjoyed a fabulous dinner at the Grill. When we arrived with a booking we were immediately ushered to a table and our coats hung up for us. Our waiter introduced himself and asked about us and whetjer we were celebrating an occasion whilst dining with them. He patiently explained the menu (the drinks menu and meat selection ia very diverse). When our orders were taken our waiter double checked that he had recorded our orders correctly and promptly served us some amazing bread to nibble on while we waited. Our seafood platter was incredible - beautifully presented with good portion sizes. The seafood was top notch, and very fresh to. Our mains were delicious, and the meat cooked exactly as requested. There was a small hiccup where we received a double serving of beans rather than one beans and one pumpkin salad. But this was quickly corrected and removed from our bill. Definitely leave room for dessert! I wanted to order more than one. Would definitely dine here again... And judging by how packed the restaurant was many others no doubt also enjoy repeat experiences here! (Bookings recommended!)

I had an overall great experience at The Grill. We arrived without booking a table and we had to wait just for 10’ tops which is a very reasonable amount of time especially on Boxing Day. The place offers premium meat and sea food however most known for the premium cuts and excellent choice of wine.
The decoration, lighting, layout and furniture is A grade. Very nice vibe. Classy but not fake.
The staff is very friendly and eager to provide great service. We started with delicious fresh artisan bread and butter, then had a very interesting Caesar salad, with egg, anchovies and dry prosciutto.
We ordered two Angus ribeye on the bone and two glasses of blended merlot wine.
The ‘meat library’ has an extensive range of beef options such as Angus, Wagyu of various grades and prices and dry aged cuts from the best parts of the animal. There are some high end cuts if you can afford the cost. Same thing applies in the range of wines starting from $15 per glass up to some rare bottles of $7500.
The steak is served naked or with a choice of sauces. The waitress brought separately a choice of 4 different types of mustards and kept visiting us to ensure that we have water, and check if we are happy with everything.
The meat was greatly grilled with a crispy dark brown charred outside and juicy and delicious inside. The meat was thick, cooked medium rare with some wonderful pink colour at the centre. Fantastic taste.
The wine arrived also in the right temperature.
As I mentioned at the beginning it was a great experience overall. If you can afford the expense or planning for a special dinner this is definitely a great choice. Extra points for the classic rock music adding a more authentic vibe —really awesome to listening to creedence clearwater revival while enjoying your stake.

Great food and atmosphere. To start, we ordered steak tartare to share, which is prepared at your table. My mom, usually wouldn't eat raw meat, really enjoyed it, tastes good. Had A Study of Beef:Wakanui Angus Eye fillet, Wagyu Rump, and Slow cooked Short ribs. All made to perfection~~ On the side we had the cabbage & parmesan slaw, duck fat chips, and grandma carrots. Easily the best steak joint in Auckland. They keep things so simple but surprise you with the really subtle flavours lurking in each morsel. Steak cooked exactly as I like it. Good, formal service (which is missing a lot of the time in Auckland) and a lively atmosphere to match.

The food is undoubtedly good and the place looks great. It gets a bit too noisy when full, but nothing that would ruin the dinner. Ate here for dinner on 23.12.20. Normally I don't bother to review unless a place is terrible, but absolutely have to share how amazing everything is here! All four of us (2 adults, 2 teens) had our 'best ever' meals, the sides were lovely and the service and drinks are excellent. This is my second time here and my memories of the first time are that it was amazing then too. We're spoiled now, not sure we can be happy anywhere else!

This restaurant is an absolute treat. The staff provide a service that is as faultless as the food and our group couldn’t stop talking about it, well after we had left. The drinks selection is extensive, whether you are wanting to celebrate with something high end or keep it simple, they cater to everyone. The steak selection was absolutely amazing, half of our table ordered from this and agreed they have never had better. Side for the table to share means you get to enjoy a bit of everything- and trust me you want to try everything! This is on the high price scale but well worth it for the quality of your evening.

Was taken out tonight to The Grill, been meaning to get here for a while. Tried three courses, 'jumbo' scallops, rib eye, apple tart. Overall the meal was superb.
Serving staff are clearly well trained and very professional and attentive, our server knew our round of drinks even when one of our party of 6 couldn't remember. We ordered too many sides and she was able to steer us away from just cluttering our table, which I appreciated as she was clearly trying to make sure we had a good experience.

Steak was absolutely on point. Grilled veges were fantastic, potato mash was silky and superbly seasoned. My 500gm ribeye was cooked to perfection (not always easy with thick on the bone cuts.) Apple tart with vanilla ice cream was a delight, crispy pastry, tart apples, hints of caramel.
If I was being picky, the scallop and truffle entrée at $37 was the weaker dish, scallops were not quite caramelised and no seasoning, and for the price (yes truffle adds cost) wasn't amazing.
Overall though, this place hit the mark between hearty food, attentive service, and a touch of refined cooking. Price wise possibly at the treat end of the scale but you don't go to these places for run of the mill night.
Would certainly go again, and would recommend to a group looking for something a bit fancy whilst being solid quality.

At first was abit unsure if we were going to have good experience. ( was slightly nervous due to previous experience at another skycity restaurant). We were 20 min early from reservation but host was quiet happy to seated us down anw which was great.
Excelent steak and service. Ambience was quiet good for a quiet intimate celebration. Thoroughly ejnjoyed everything here except the toilet was a tad far away due to renovation. Other than that can't really fault anything elae。The server we had that nite was fantastic, professional and firendly. Cant remember his name. He is from Brazil thats all I remember. Kudos to The grill. We will be back.

We both just had mains, and both had steak. I had the scotch and my friend the fillet - we both said it was the best steak we’ve had in a long time. The wood they use on the grill imparts a lovely mild smokeyness to the beef. Amazing. The duck fat chips were excellent as were the green beans with confit shallots. The service was good, however we did have to call someone over to top up our wine which we shouldn’t have to do. The wine list was also fine, however there is not a lot of choice for a fuller bodied red at about $100. We ended up with a Margaret River Shiraz which was good. Overall, a lovely night and a great start to a long weekend.

First of all, if any of you are in meat like steaks then this place is the right restaurant to go to for when you are in a steak mood. Secondly, I enjoyed the food because, I had a Japanese export sirloin that was dry aged for 130 days and that was full of flavour. I can also say that the service was warm and friendly. However, there is one thing I do not like about the Grill is the rock music being played in a nice looking restaurant. Do not get me wrong I like rock music, but I just do not think rock music would suit a nice looking restaurant instead I think something like jazz would suit the Grill itself. Finally, my experience at the Grill was really good and I will give the Grill a 4.5 out of 5.

If you love your steak good place for that. High quality meat. The food was very nice 10 stars.. overall experience was great except for when it comes to hygiene none of the staff was wearing hair net either in the cooking area n the serving area, few staff had beard, saw couple of the staff touching the cheese with bear hands.. this was quite concerning as they were touching other stuff and then left the cheese open uncovered people passing by could spread gems just by coughing or sneezing. To close for open public to pass by uncovered food. Overall nice place n good experience.

I have high expectations when it comes to both steak and over paying for a meal. My husband and I were looking to enjoy a night out and The Grill had great reviews. It was easy to get a same day reservation but we were told we needed to be gone by 8:00 pm. With a reservation at 5:45pm this wasn't an issue but if you're dropping $500 on a meal for two, you'd think the staff could refrain from kicking you out before you even arrived.
The wine selection was impressive offer middle of the road selections all the way to 100 point award winners.
The steak was okay. I was missing grain fed meat and thought it would conquer the craving. Ultimately though, steak no matter the cut needs a bit of finesse from the chef. The meat lacked flavor and was over cooked. I'd asked for medium rare and it arrived cooked medium to medium well. This girl likes the taste of blood so I was disappointed.
The Mac and Cheese was delightful. I also had a side of crab which was cold.
All in all I'll try a different steak house next time around but it was OK for a night out.

Went for a cozy dinner for two, ordered the rib eye on the bone and the Japanese scotch accompanied by the chef's salad and a bottle of red wine. The steak was exquisite which is what we expected for this restaurant. The chef's salad is a gorgeous side and is prepared in front of you. This is a good restaurant but somehow the whole experience just seems a little disjointed. The table service is very casual and jovial, the music playing was rock music, the seating is grand with lots of leather and hard surfaces. The reception staff were helpful and smiling but actually paying attention to other things happening rather than the person in front of them. Having to walk out of the restaurant and past hotel reception to go to the toilet made me feel a bit like I was going to a restaurant in a mall but paying fine dining prices.
A lovely touch from our waiter and the kitchen who happily made a dessert from us that was not on the menu.

I enjoy going here for steak and whiskey on occasion. They were able to accommodate a group of 14 us recently for my stag party dinner. They could’ve been more flexible on the time slot and we would’ve preferred to not be forced to pay for a set menu but it was tasty nonetheless! I’ll be back someday with smaller group.

I went there for a birthday celebration with my partner and service was excellent from the phone call in the morning to confirm the reservation all the way till the end. The waiter taking care of us the entire night did such a great job, we asked for a wine to pair with our beef selection and he suggested a 2014 Pinor Noir which tasted really good. When we felt like we wouldn't finish the meal, he offered to help us pack it up without us asking for it. They were attentive yet not obtrusive. Of course the beef were excellent, we ordered the chef's selection of 3 different beef and the fillet mignon was medium rare and almost melting in my mouth. The complimentary birthday dessert with personalised message is a small yet thoughtful touch.

Perfectly cooked steak and the miso hollandaise is to die for! Atmosphere was ok and service could have been better as our waitress wasn't very attentive. I wouldn't recommend coming here if you are after an intimate dinner/dinner with a partner as it is quite loud and better for groups.

We ordered the 240g eye fillet with red wine jus and the following sides:
*smoked mash potato, chicken gravy.
*roasted pumpkin, cress, walnut, buffalo curd.

Being first timers we were greeted by a host, waited by a lovely lady and kitchen staff delivered our food as well as compliments from the kitchen. Overall an “Amazing” experience from start to end.

Simply the fanciest steak restaurant in Auckland.
Sure, there are others, but this is the fancy one. This place is about the steak, done in a 5 star surroundings.
The steak is the same that you will get in other top places - aged, name brand, fancy. The meat is delicious, will be cooked however you like it, and comes in a lot of varieties from well marbled wagyu to tender aged sirloin to everything in between. It'll be buttery, soft, meaty, and excellent - you know that from just looking at the menu.
The sides will be simple but perfectly executed. Fries done in duck fat, crispy and golden, butter poached carrot, mac and cheese, etc... all traditional sides, executed as well as they can be done anywhere.
The surroundings are what set this place apart. Given that you're eating what is basically fancy bistro steak and chips, the services and surroundings gives the whole thing a sense of occasion.
Wide variety of butters and sauces, talk to your waiter for recommendations. Don't skip the starters - they're excellent, especially the sashimi or the pork belly with squid in a miso sauce.
Yes, you can get this meal cheaper elsewhere. But the surroundings and quality of execution are great. Recommended for special occasions.

Perfection! This place knows how to prepare and cook proteins, with delicious fresh sides to compliment. Sir had the steak with miso sauce and i had the market fish. Both outstanding. Also had the duck fat chips, asparagus with hollandaise and cos lettuce with radish. The maude pinot noir was a perfect match to the steak and champagne to the market fish. Service was top notch. Decor is formal and cosy. Highly recommended.

Wollte unbedingt in ein Steakhouse gehen auch wenn meine Freundin nicht gern fleisch mag. Jedoch der Besuch hat sich sehr gelohnt. Das Lamm war Perfekt gegrillt und die Kartoffeln und Karotten dazu haben wunderbar geschmeckt. Auch der Hausgemachte Ketchup schmeckte sehr frisch und leicht scharf. Das Risotto wurde spektakulär serviert und hat Beifall gefunden.
Wir wurden von der wunderbaren Minsook bedient. Die uns perfekt durch den Abend geführt hatte und uns das köstliche Dessert empfohlen hat.
