The closest thing to world travel since this pandemic started is being transported to the Far East with food from this INCREDIBLE Afghan restaurant. Cannot rave about this place enough. We’ve had better food here than at many ‘critically acclaimed’ places in Christchurch. The value for money is insane, the service always friendly but no nonsense and the food 10/10. We often make the 1hr return trip just to get our fix. There are always leftovers, so we bring a takeaway container to reduce plastic use.

Basic decor and no menu or anything but this just makes the experience even better! You just say for how ever many people, we got takeaway and it was big servings! Food was delicious!! Rice was so flavoursome I don’t even like lamb usually but was delicious definitely recommend! It was a very new experience for us to dine in at Afgan Restaurant! They dont have any menus. You go there, take plates and cutleries, take a seat and when the food would be ready u will be called in the counter! Food was delicious which actually counts and also behaviour of the owners are lovely. Price is reasonable as well..It was too much food for us, had to pack for takeaways!

This place is the best Afghan restaurant I've been to. I've tried a few in Australia before but this one in Christchurch is certainly the best. The lamb is very delicious and tender. The curry chicken literally falls off the bone. Even the rice tastes great! Portion size is very generous and the two chefs out the front are friendly. Can see why this is such a popular place amongst locals and travellers. It's worth the wait ! Great place! Highly recommended.

Afghan Restaurant is one of the leading restaurants in Christchurch. This is one of the never miss food corner in Christchurch. People from different cultures enjoy afghan dishes from there. The shop is usually busy and dishes finishes early in the weekends. The shop owner is so friendly as he welcomes everyone and even if we ask for extra he is ready to give. Coming to food, is so yummy. Mostly, there will be salad,rice, kabab and chicken that is absolutely amazing. I, once in a month visit the shops and enjoy dishes. When ever my friends or somebody come to visit Christchurch, I used to take him to afghan restaurant. There is also option for take aways. The shop is usually in the evening. But make sure to confirm it by contacting directly through phone.

Traditional Afgan food. Simple menu. Don’t let the fit out deceive you. The owner here produces quality food that would want you back for more. Be warned though, he opens when he likes, when he is open do expect a wait for your food. Everybody enjoyed their food.

Probably some of the best food I've eaten in New Zealand. Such a massive portion for the money (NZD 20) as well. Now I don't know the specifics, I just said yes when the gentleman asked if I wanted mixed (basically chicken and lamb kebabs + rice, some sort of chicken curry, and a mixed salad), but it was absolutely top drawer. No regrets. If you don't take advantage of this place existing while you're in Christchurch you're doing it all wrong. Expect smoke from the grill!

"A true Afgani Zyka" .. Bestest place for Kabab and Biryani. Too much rush there but worth it. It's 20 dollars food package include salad, Kabab and quality rice. You can order chicken or lamb curry separately. Kabab choices are lamb and chicken. Believe me the quantity is too much that 5 peoples can eat in 3 meals. And if you are going there than confirm first because food is finished so fast and sometime shop is closed.

PRO TIP: for the people complaining about irregular hours, if you join the Facebook group “Is AFG open?”, they will post if they will open that day or not. Usually open at 5pm, open until at least 9pm. The food: AMAZING. Best rice you’ll ever have, PERIODT💅. How you are served: dine in, it is served in twos, so bring a friend. You get a giant plate of rice with two skewers of chicken and two of lamb. It also comes with chicken curry that is the bomb (close to butter chicken, hopefully this isn’t sacrilege, I’m sorry). Then you also get a side salad (warning: has olives). For take away, you can get just one serving if you want. $20 per person, regardless. This man can COOK. He is lovely. Support local!

Haha, that's how we waited for like 30mins with a 2yr old because we really wanted to try Afghan. There's a FB page which tells whether open or not. Food was great 😋 big portion and not too expensive just the waiting 😴 part and they don't do orders over ph. So one need to be really patient and able to inhale bit of yummy smoke once onside the restaurant 😜

One of the most unique restaurants I’ve ever been to, in such a good way. The atmosphere is so welcoming and the food is great. If you’re dining, be sure to just grab a plate and sit down, no need to wait for anyone to serve you. Fantastic value and a truly hidden gem!

Rice and curry was awesome! Not a fan of the chicken kebab unfortunately. Been here twice and it's always been a long wait(=20mins) even though we came before opening hours. No proper queue system so customers can be quite aggressive trying to jump ahead of others just to get their food first. Could've been more efficient, but ofcourse it was worth the wait.

Have visited him Multiple times and realised that the quality of food changes depending on how busy it is and usually it is very busy. Also the quantity changes depending on how busy it is. Also having had kebabs at different shops I now find his kebabs very dry. Plus the place is really like a take away shop and unfortunately a little business marketing sense could take him a long way. For eg: there is no vent at the shop n fill the place with smoke. No toilet. Not much of a sitting place. Recommed doing takeaways. Thus overall i have dropped his rating to 3/5.

If you are ever in Christchurch you MUST visit this place. Man! The food is so delicious.. best food i have tasted in New Zealand. The restaurant opens at 6:00pm and people will already be waiting. I don't think they have a menu, you just go sit and wait to be served ( actually you will have to serve your self). The place is not big, and definitely there are not enough tables for everyone so excpect others to join you at the table. The price is around 20 per person with a free soda. Unique experience and definitely worth it 😋

When dining in, there is no menu. Just let the guy know how many people and he'll place food on your table shortly. It's GIGANTIC - the four person version was enough to feed six people easily! It consisted of a chicken korma, a large salad, soft drinks and a massive plate of seasoned basmati rice with grilled lamb and chicken. Everything was exceptional, especially given it was only $20 a head. It was almost like eating at an Uncle's restaurant - he gave us a box to take home what we couldn't finish ("it's not good to waste food!" he would say with a smile), along with another full helping of chicken korma curry! If I could give six stars, I would. Highly recommended!

I honestly can't believe that I am giving this place a 5 star review. Their schedule is haphazard and you never know when it's open or closed. And when it is open, you can usually expect to see chaos at an average wait time of 30 minutes to be served. That being said, the food is tuely amazing and for the price you pay ($20), I have to admit that you really get your money's worth. So it comes as no surprise that this place is so popular and despite its shortcomings, I find myself going there on a regular basis. If you've haven't been there before, it's definitely worth trying out.

Absolutely iconic. Everyone loves the Afghan restaurant and for good reason. Nothing more to say about it really, amazing food for a great price. Don't go there expecting a wide variety of dishes, and there are no menus it's the same foods each time (rice, curry, amazing skewers of lamb and chicken, spicy salad). This place is one of the legends of Christchurch food. Up there with dimitris in terms of quality, but with the added excitement of opening whenever the owners like and with no menu option, you just say how many people and they make you the meal appropriate for that number of people. A spicy salad, some amazing rice(and i normally think rice is pointless) chicken and lamb skewers, and a chicken curry. All for 20 dollars a head. Can not recommend enough. A+ out of ten. Both for eat in or takeaway.

The raw edge of dining. Where taste trumps everything else. Get your own cutlery, clear the previous diners' plates from the table you want to sit at, No menu; just "how many people" - to feed? No vegans, no vegetarians, no dietary requirements unless you wanna just eat the salad and rice (still pretty fantastic). Wash your hands in the far corner sink, grab some coke cans in the fridge. The toilet is not for the faint hearted or those scared of the dark ; neither is the wait for food. But it tastes like you are in a nomadic encampment over a campfire......and that's why they're all standing waiting with you.....

This place is one of the best place to eat Afgan food in Christchurch specially if you are looking for halal. They have a fixed menu which they serve $40. The food is sufficient for three people. You get confused once you enter the restaurant as there is staff to assign you tables but you can catch up after a quick observation. The chef is a multi talented person who is cooking food, serving food, taking payments, giving out takeaways all together. He greets you with a smile and is nice to talk to. This is a must visit place.

AMAZING Afghan food. We came at 8:30PM on a Monday night and it was not crowded. Only 2 other tables besides us. As soon as we walked in the delicious smell of grilled meat wafted out. They don't hold back on the spices and the flavors. You sit down and go get the food when it's ready. No fuss and no ceremony. It's all about the food. Definitely worth it if you're in Christchurch. First visit you will definitely confuse. If you need to eat at the restaurant go and sit somewhere with other guys. There are no reserve tables. Then wait for while. According to the people they will give you food. No menu. 20NZD per head. Its self service. You can pack your extra foods. Ask them to give basket. You can put your things inside and cover it with foil. Staff is not friendly and no guidance. If you want take a way just go and tell how many people. That's all. Foods are delicious!

This was such a funny experience. Unconventional style and super friendly staff and delicious food. Tips for beginners: just grab plates and cutlery and sit down somewhere (you will likely have to find a space at someone elses table) he will get around to you eventually and ask how many are in your group and serve you whatever he is cooking (ignore the menu no one follows it). He cooks in batches throughout the night so depending on when you show up you may wait up to 30 mins. You will not leave here hungry!

Its a little strange sitting down and having food just handed to you instead of ordering, but when you don't know what you feel like eating, this is a fantastic substitute. The food is just yummy. This is a self-service restaurant, so don't expect any table service. Before you head out call to check if open. If you plan to dine in, expect some smoke from the kitchen and sometimes the firemen to turn up from the nearby fire station :)

Highly recommended ! We traveled from Dunedin and came to this place everyday! There is no menu and you should trust the chef . Once you arrived you should help yourself and feel free like you are at home. The food is chicken and minced lamb kebab plus chicken curry (similar to butter chicken). The curry is spicy and the chicken kebab is milde . All in all I really enjoyed the food and will come to this place again .
