Very good yakitori, very unique izakaya. taco is huge and tastes great. All the chicken and Wagyu beef are also delicious. Every piece of meat was very tender. The service was also very friendly and prompt. Will definitely bring friends back next time.

Amazing food! Taco, scollaps, tail are must try. So glad that there's a Yakitori 焼き鳥 place in Christchurch. Can tell from the food that the Chef really focuses on details, everything is perfect match.

Amazing food. Some of the skewers are cooked over a barbecue grill so they have an amazing flavour. Everything was perfect. Very expensive though for a lunch. As much as we really enjoyed the food we would have to think twice about eating here at these prices.

The food and service at Bar Yoku were amazing! We especially loved the yellow fin tuna sushi taco, and the chicken karaage is some of the best I’ve ever had. Will definitely be back!

Lovely ambiance, best experience for 2 ppl is to sit by the yakitori grill as you can watch your food cooking in front of you. Food was delicious and cooked/seasoned well (even the broccoli is worth the spend) 😋 only saw 1 or 2 options for vegans though.

Such a special experience. The food is impeccable and different to any other experience, the sushi tacos are outstanding! The drinks are always delicious, especially the whisky highballs and yuzu. The staff are friendly, charismatic and full of excellent recommendations. The restaurant itself is cosy, intimate and authentic. It’s the perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion with you nearest and dearest. Every time I visit Bar Yoku it is a memorable experience and I can’t wait for the next time.

I dine here at least once a week and the food is consistently delicious! The yakitori is succulent and the tacos exquisite. Great location and staff so friendly. Highly recommend you sit in the booths when you're there, get direct view of kitchen!

What a stunning meal and overall experience. We eat out Christchurch fairly regularly and would put this in our Top 3 spots (along with 5th Street and Story!) Food was incredible, those sushi tacos are really something!!! Have been dreaming about them ever since we walked out. We loved the slick but friendly service. Vaccine passes were checked as soon as we arrived (well done… we had eaten at another Christchurch establishment a few nights earlier, who also shared a place on the recent Cuisine Top 100 restaurants list, and they didn’t check) and our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly. Drinks were great, amazing use of Japanese flavours and inspiration. We sat at the Yakatori Bar so watched the food being cooked, would highly recommend this if dining as a pair. The chef was super friendly and happy to tell us what he was doing. Thanks Bar Yoku, you guys really deserve your place on Cusine Magazines list!!!

As always, DELICIOUS! The sushimi platter is so fresh with a great variety and good value for money. Of course followed by the obligatory sushi taco, divine. Friendly staff make us feel so welcome, we are definitely going to go back.

Easily our top spot for dinner in Christchurch. Terrific service, great atmosphere and the food is always delicious! Either dine casually with your sushi taco and agadashi tofu (not to be missed!) or we highly recommend one of the chef's choice set menus!

Bar Yoku hosted our company end of year celebration. What an awesome evening Juliana and her team put on for us. The food was stunning as always and we had so many special meal requests but they sorted it all with no issues whatsoever. Every team member at Bar Yoku was very friendly and very professional. Thanks to Juliana for changing dates at the last minute and making sure the evening went smoothly. Highly recommended and many of our team will be back with friends to enjoy the Bar Yoku experience.

Bar Yoku on Wells street is nice addition to Christchurch life. It’s inviting and making you feel relaxed. Good selection of wine and sake. Would be nice to have sake that you can’t buy at any liquor store making customers to wanted come even more. Food is very nice well presented. For people who went to Japan and experienced real izakaya Bar Yoku is the closest you can get. Staff is excellent with smile not invasive leaving you comfortable and relaxed. Wold recommend to anyone who likes Japanese food.

I went for their birthday party event and really enjoyed the meal, cocktails and customer service. This is a great izakaya style restaurant to visit when you're in Christchurch. They even have Yuzu on the menu. I'll definitely go again!

Our work party was booked a week or so out, we opted for a 7:30pm, sunken table (which proved very authentic). You can see the hard working kitchen from there and there was plenty of space. There were six of us and we opted for the set menus for the most part. These were astonishing and large meals in the end - we were all very full. The staff were great, always available and came at the right time (we were never waiting for a drink). The menus also accommodated veggie and dietary requirements which she checked at the start. My partner have been here before as a couple, but was still as impressed with a bigger group. Beautiful setting and food - well done Bar Yoku.

Probably the most delicious Japanese restaurant that I visited. The dishes were amazing and the service was quick and helpful. And the prices were not as pricey as it might be expected.

The food was amazing, cool wee atmosphere. It was pouring with rain outside but was cosy and spacious in the indoor courtyard. Food came out very quickly and all more or less at once (even though we asked for staggered) so next time we would probably order a couple of things... enjoy a drink... order another couple etc ;).

Really above and beyond expectations! The only Japanese food place in Chch that has really high standard. Portion is also good--the rice is huge. The scallop is divine. Even the Karage is really good. The salad is to die for. Definitely will come back for the salad and yakitori.

It is a hidden gem in City center, with japanese style bbq and some fusion japanese meal. The most recommended item would be the sushi taco, I ordered a nz wagyu sushi taco. With a crispy outside but soft beef inside. Which give me a big surprise with that. I ordered different type of different parts of the chicken. Including some special part like liver heart and tail, I love their idea as using everything inside the chicken in the meau. Unfortunately the bbq I have that day mostly overburn, that's the reason I give 4 star. But the service and the environment of the restaurant is absolutely five star, hope they improve their japanese bbq.

Popped in here for lunch on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon, fabulous restaurant and great menu! The food is different and unique and the sushi tacos are amazing! Great prices and super friendly staff with great service. We'll be back for sure.

Fantastic food, had the karaage chicken taco and pork belly skewer, both were top notch. The wafts beef skewer was crispy outside, tender inside and had a wonderful smoky flavour but there were some chewy bits I couldn’t eat. Would definitely go back.

The food is more suited for the local palette and not particularly authentic; most people in Japan do not eat 3tbs of mayonnaise with their donburi. That being said, everything we had tasted great.

We enjoyed a tasty fresh and delicious dinner with friends. They catered for gluten free and other dietary needs without dumbing down the menu. A great choice of Japanese bar food.

This little hidden gem tucked away was excellent and had a very authentic Japanese vibe. The choice of food was extensive, and service was excellent and extremely fast.The food itself was absolutely true to style and taste and very well balanced in its execution. The Sake choice was also excellent compared to some Japanese restaurants I have visited. A great atmosphere and knowledgeable staff made this place one of best style Japanese restaurants I have had the pleasure in visiting. A must do if you are a lover of Japanese food and in you are in the city. Just one thing that let the whole vibe down in my opinion, Choice of music......May I suggest a more modern Japanese playlist rather than American hip hop in the background? But apart from that,go there.You won't be disappointed.😋

Enjoyed dinner at Bar Yoku. Best salmon sashimi I've ever tasted and the waygu beef yakitori was stunning. The sushi tacos are a fun idea and pretty good too. It's not cheap - but worth the price. We sat out in the courtyard area which is really funky - inside in the moody dark spaces looked like it'd be great also.

Great food, loved trying all the different dishes. Everything tasted great! I especially liked the wagyu tataki and tempura. Staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is very Japanese. I also like the whole concept of the health prencint.

Nice staff and food there. Tried Donburi today. Miso soup 🍲 is quite nice too. Pork is juicy and smoky. wish more vegetables for sashimi.

I eat out quite a bit in Chch and this is some of the best food that you will find - especially at the price! The staff are always knowledgeable and courteous and the ambiance is great for a casual meal.

My friend and I visited on Friday for drinks and dinner and what a lovely experience! The decor and ambience is inviting and comfortable while still being elegant and buzzing. The food was amazing (highly recommend the agadashi tofu and sushi tacos) but there is so much more I need to try on our next visit! We sat at the tables, but the bar and sunken tables looked really fun too. Really well priced for the quality of food and experience. Our waitress (Mel) was so genuinely friendly and relaxed and made us feel at ease and like nothing was a problem. She got a great balance between being attentive and leaving us to get on with catching up. Christchurch has been really lacking a great Japanese restaurant so this is it! Cannot recommend enough. Thank you!

Delicious food and great atmosphere. So nice to have finally have a great modern Japanese restaurant in Christchurch! Favourite menu items were the mushroom skewers and the tofu sushi taco (but everything we had was fantastic). Our waitress was also very lovely and helpful! We’ll be back for sure.

I very rarely ever write reviews and don't really believe in them but after my experience at Bar Yoku I felt really compelled to share. My partner and I were visiting Christchurch from Auckland and stumbled across this Japanese restaurant and we saw that they had some vegetarian/vegan options on the menu. Japanese is our favorite, so we called up and booked a reservation, which was answered by Juliana who was just the most loving human being I've ever spoken to! I've worked in customer service my whole life and you could really tell the voice on the other end really loves what they do. She's a star! Anyways, long story short we had the perfect dining experience at Bar Yoku and felt that it was incomparable to anywhere we've ever eaten. Delicious Japanese food with a really cool and interesting twist. Definitely order the vege skewers, but the even bigger highlight for us was the sushi tacos! We've never ordered extra food after finishing our dinners before, but the sushi tacos were so beautiful we needed to have seconds! We were seated at the stools by the kitchen, so we could watch everyone's meals being cooked and got to chatting with Shawn who is not only the chef but also the owner. He was one of the kindest and most genuine people I've met in such a long time, it honestly felt like we were talking to an old friend. His story just really stuck with me and I truly admired the environment that he's created with Bar Yoku and also the family dynamic that his team shares. It takes really good food just up another notch, because the entire show is run by just really good people. Shawn also later mentioned that Juliana (the incredible star that answered my reservation call was his partner and co-owner)! So if you ever in Christchurch and are looking for fantastic and unique food with plenty of vegan options, a warm atmosphere, owned and managed by great/down to earth/humble humans...look no further than Bar Yoku!

I don't do that. I don't write reviews. After my random visit in this lovely restaurant I had no doubt about writing one. Maybe it would be the small thing I can do to return and share my experience there:) Arrived hungry and struggling with some unpleasant bureaucracy. The staff were SO NICE!! I felt they saw me and felt me. It touched my heart! Great hospitaity, solidarity and humbleness. I've been there almost a week ago and I find myself fantasize on that restaurant to be near me when I'm hungry:) (As a big eater) - I went out full and happy:) The people makes the place , not the opposite. Thank you lovely crew!!

We were seated at the sunken table inside for dinner with friends. Nice atmosphere with low lighting, good music and flames from the kitchen BBQ in the background. Service was brilliant - friendly and helpful. Chef have absolutely nailed it with the authentic izakaya style food. Bar Yoku signature sushi tacos were full of flavour and texture. The beef tataki also is sensational. Our Vego friend loved the generous tempura veg, tofu taco, and pickled cucumbers. Yummy sake tasting selection and fresh cold Asahi on tap. The prices here are super reasonable and we can't wait to come back and keep working our way through the menu and bar list. Thanks Bar Yoku!

Good atmosphere, 2 options for table seatings, helpful waiting stuff walked us through the menu so we could order the right portions that suit us for lunch. Taco is an interesting fusion, we had the softshell crab taco, it was tasty. The grilled meat was okay, the chicken could be more tendered, and pork is not crispy. Overall okay experience, economical meal, good portion, fast table service.

Bar Yoku is perfect for a casual catch up that can easily turn into a longer night. The idea of just ordering the food as you want it is so simple...the BBQ you have when no one actually wants or knows how to cook is a thing of the past. Great food..fair prices and a relaxed fun atmosphere.... Highly recommended.

We loved the food, the service was fantastic and the staff really friendly. Definitely recommend it to others - you have to try this place and the background music is exactly that - no shouting to have a conversation with the person next to you or across from you. Huge thumbs up.

Until a few weeks ago, I didn’t realise sushi tacos were a thing missing from my life. This is something everyone should try, but be prepared to get hooked. I think the salmon sushi tacos are the best, but the others are also tasty. They occasionally get fresh tuna from their fish monger and I hope someday I can be there on the right day to get a tuna sushi taco. Aaaand they’re not just a sushi taco place. Their yakitori is also spectacular as were the entrees we had. Their cheapest warm sake was also quite good. Basically, we couldn’t find anything not good on their menu. Combine that with the atmosphere of The Welder, where they’re located, and this is now one of our favourite spots to eat.

Salmon Nigiri - Very fresh and they were generous with the portion of EACH salmon pieces White Fish - Usually not a fan but it was good (can't beat Salmon of course) Prawn Tempura - Pretty generous with their portion, love the batter they use for their tempura, it's flaky and crispy with some flavour in them still. Agedashi Tofu - Haven't found a place that made bad Tofu, very good Tofu Wagyu Beef Sandwich - Just lovely. Juicy beef pattie, cooked just right! Flavour was spot on. Overal a little bit on the pricy side but it's actually still worth while. My wife and I come here fairly often as she's a fan of sashimi.
