One of the best Yorkshire puddings I've had in a while. Had the Mothers Day special. Great staff and very polite. Thankyou Joanna and other restauramt staff. Very polite, courteous and friendly. Thankyou chief best meal in a while.

Our family of 5 came here for my daughter's 18th. The service was on point, very friendly and quite prompt even being busy. Food was pretty amazing apart from my dish was supposed to have beans and my partners dish everything was ready to eat apart from his potatoes which were scorching it burnt the roof of his mouth. We didn't complain but did mention it when we left. Most of our cocktails were delicious too apart from the margarita which was rimmed with way too much salt lol overall good atmosphere and good food 😊

We went for a birthday and it was a large group. We had a nice private section, the waiter was lovely. Everyone ordered a mix of bar snacks and restaurant menu. Due to the size of the group the food was served in two parts. The kids chicken bites were large chicken tenders and nicely cooked. I ordered argentine style empanadas and waffle fries for mains. The seafood chowder looked freshly made and smelt great, the pork belly bites were a good bite sized pieces. The salmon was cooked until light pink but not too dry. All in all it was a nice place for a birthday dinner 🙂

Beautiful food and exceptional staff. Booked 2 hours prior. Dined in on Monday night 22nd November 2021 at 8pm, party of 5. Upon arrival we were seated and served drinks immediately. Our first server was a beautiful lady who was patient, kind and went above expectation to ensure we were satisfied. She was also we'll informed of the menu items, which helped us to determine what was best to order. She filled our water glasses when needed, as well as suggesting different beverages to accompany our meals throughout the night. Half way through our meals we changed waiters to a pleasant and humorous young man who also made sure our beverages were of the right liking as well as assisting with dessert options. His sense of humour was the perfect addition to end a beautiful evening. All in all it was a wonderful place to spend my last dinner with my whanau in Christchurch whom I hadn't seen in a year. The staff made the night enjoyable, the venue was cozy and welcoming with beautiful history on display and the food was the cherry on top as it was delicious beyond words would ever do Justice. I'm a big eater so along with my own choices of entrees, mains and dessert I tried everyone else's also. Photos are of our menu choice below: Entrees: -King prawns with salsa -Pork belly (dipping sauce was super good) Mains: -Tbone steak with roast spuds and side salad (can switch spuds for chips) with choice of 2 sauces we choose mushroom and peppercorn -Lamb rack with roast spuds in dripping gravy, side salad and 2 sauces. -Beef rib on mash with dripping gravy -Pan fried salmon with crispy skin with roast spuds in dripping gravy with salsa and greens Dessert: -Chocolate lover - moist chocolate cake with dark chocolate ice cream scoop, strawberries and chocolate sauce (heavenly good 😊 can swap ice cream for vanilla also) -Forgot the name - was like caramel panacotta with soft meringue and roasted almonds Highly recommend ⭐ BEEBYRHI

Very expensive but the food was good, the Angus Rib Eye was very nice but only came with a handful of fries, so to have to pay extra for a sauce and any accompaniments was a bit much. Service was always good with friendly staff, however they did mischarge me 2 out of the 4 times I went.

Went for lunch with 3 others. Meals were excellent. They looked a bit smaller than expected, but we were all full at the end. Changes were graciously looked after. Steak was outstanding, ribeye, sandwich, eye fillet, and salad all were worthy of repeat orders. Great ambience, very comfortable and cool.

It's wonderful that we were able to pop up to a bar in the late evening and without booking. And they had a wonderful live music that we heard but not saw because of the sitting arrangement. The food and drinks however could be improved. The doughnuts were labeled as home made, but the taste suggested that they left their home long ago. The gin and tonic was boring: no lime no lemon.

The Carlton is really a good place to enjoy a great evening out. This venue is a restaurant and bar. Being a steak house they have a fantastic t-bone on the menu. This is a premium option on the menu which should not be over looked and considered a very good choice. With a nice atmosphere and good surroundings I am sure you will enjoy the evening out. There is parking out the back or on the road. Do note it might be wise to book as it can get quite busy.

Always good food, the service is great but make sure you book, meals and tables can take a while when you order late. Do yourself a favor and get a dry aged steak with duck fat potatoes. Spectacular.

I really enjoyed my meal at this pub. Fancy food in the front and bar at the back, this place had something for everyone! I ordered the fresh salmon and it was the best salmon dish I’ve ever had! My dad ordered the steak, which was also very good. If I lived in Christchurch I could see this becoming a very regular haunt! Thanks for a great meal and night!

The food was excellent but the options on the menu were limited unless you want a steak. Yes, I know its called a Bar and Steakhouse but you'd expect a chicken meal or a burger option but nothing like that. We did enjoy the food however the alcohol prices were excessive, the reason dmfir a 4 star and not a 5 star.

Did I hear you say Wings Wednesday? $6 per dozen of wings on a Wednesday - finger licking good!! One of our work rituals is to pop down to The Carlton every couple of Wednesdays for Wings Wednesday. They also do delicious coffees, and have great loyalty rewards!!

We ordered our steak meals mine Sirloin $38 dollars and my husband's TBone 800grams...fine print priced per grams cost was $104 for his steak..ridiculous and made us leave feeling sad 😔 Such a shame.

We recently had my husbands 50th here. The venue was fantastic and the staff were very helpful, without being in your face. Nevil organised everything for me, including a bus to transport guests. Would highly recommend this place for a birthday. We used the Auction Room, which was a great size with plenty of seating, and its own bar. We had platters for the food, which were a hit and people are still talking about them a week later! Thank you all again for making it a great night.

Once a month my girlfriend and I head head out around Canterbury in search a good food and a great night. This night was special as it was my girlfriends birthday. WELL! the staff at The Carlton bar and steakhouse certainly did not disappoint. The food was to die for, the service (in my opinion) second to none and they catered for us both on Keto diets. Hi was staying locally, and recommend to eat here.but Staff were friendly and very accomodating ...... but the food was less than average 😢: The salad was lame and the duck roasted potatoes were worse. We've had some lovely meals at the Carlton but the last 2 visits have not been what we expect. The 1st visit we asked not to be rushed 30 minutes between coarses our starters and main. They brought them out one after another and blaimed the chief a simple request surely. Last night the mushrooms tasted off, Sue's steak was border line had an off taste on some piece's but size and cooked very nice. My rib eye was very thin, dry and tough, the fat didn't pull away from the meat, very low standard and size. We'd looked forward to this meal and were extremely disappointed. We were given a discount but it doesn't repair our evening and expectations. I've had many steaks far better.

We were a party of 6. The servers were warm, engaging and very friendly and super helpful with meal suggestions. The portions were very good and the prices are value for money. Food was delicious. No one finished their meal and I had to take half of my meal home. We were well looked after and the dining experience was so great they got a $30 tip. Would definitely revisit next time I'm in Christchurch. Highly recommended!

My wife and I held our wedding reception here in July. We had about 45 people in attendance and were situated upstairs in the members bar area. I really couldn't fault the venue at all, we had lots of really positive comments regarding the food, and all the staff were really pleasant and friendly which really added to the whole experience. Sandrine was great to deal with, and took care of all of our requests. I would thoroughly recommend holding an event here.

The staff were lovely, however the food and drinks are extremely highly priced for what it is worth. We ordered a $36 steak meal expecting it to be as tasty as the price, however it came with a handful of chips and half a tomato without even any sauce to accompany it. A glass of wine was the same price as a cocktail. I would definitely recommend going down to Papanui at the Rose and Thistle to get a same sized steak, chips, eggs AND a sauce of your choice for half the price. Feeling let down.

Went there with my wife and my daughter, on a whim after an afternoon concert. We were welcomed by the staff in a friendly way and, even though they were busy, the waitress found us a quiet booth in the restaurant, and took our orders for drinks, which arrived, beautifully cold. They have a great wine list, including two of my favourite wines ( Sorry Cantabrians, they are from Otago.) Throughout the meal our cold water was kept topped up. I ordered scallops for an entree and my daughter and my wife shared a dish of pork belly snacks, while waited for our mains. The spicy scallops were delicious and not too hot. I could have done with a few more, but then, I am a kai moana glutton and would eat scallops all day, and besides, my wife commandeered a couple. I tried the pork belly snacks, which we all agreed, were superbly tasty, with a sauce that was out of this World! When our mains arrived they were beautifully presented. My fish and chips were served with a tasty aioli, lemon, and a most delicious salad. The fish, which I thought was gurnard was perfectly cooked, the fries were great and the portion almost defeated me, it was so generous. My wife's lamb roast was similarly large and was served with vegetables a lovely gravy and a Cornish pastie. She ate ecstatically and, unusually for her cleared her plate! My daughter had Akaroa salmon, which was presented beautifully, and she thoroughly enjoyed her meal. We considered the dessert menu which gave us big , yummy selection of sweet things, but unanimously decided that the previous courses had beaten our hunger, so with regret, we settled up a rather small bill considering three people had two courses of excellent food, and drinks, and wonderful service. Hungry? Like top quality food? Enjoy being well looked after by lovely, polite and friendly staff? Go there!

See attached photos, is that really worth $42? I don't think so. The standard is so high in today's age for food, price and service - you can't afford to slip. It was a $27 steak trying to be $42.

A restaurant with nice decor and great service. I came here for lunch with 7 other people. We are slightly rushed so I've asked for the estimate time. The waitress said it will be less than 30min for the food to be read but it really only took 20min. Food tasted good for something that was done in short amount of time. my seafood soup thing was flavorsome. The texture of the prawn was little bit too soft and mackerel was slightly bitter but overall I was happy with the meal.

The venue is lovely and the music is good too, however, the food lacks the sophistication that the prices are indiative of, and the value that being in a neighbourhood pub suggests. This restaurant is really very good. The food is nicely prepared and they give you large enough portions, and their service is at least good (some of the servers seem excellent). Carlton has a "no booking" policy so be prepared to enjoy a drink at the bar until a table is ready although I was seated within several minutes of arrival. I found the staff to be very friendly and approachable and we shared a few laughs. The food was amazing!! Our order was taken promptly and we were not kept waiting too long for our meal. Staff were attentive throughout. The setting is low key and a bit rustic which all adds to the experience.

Most of the food was good. The dessert was exceptional. It was all let down by an overcooked steak in my sandwich. If you don't ask how I like it cooked, I assume it will come medium rare, but I got a well done as tough as shoe leather. The flavours were good though. Service wasnt the best. The waiters make you feel like you're inconvenienceing in some way. If you don't want to work there, then don't.

They looked and tasted as though they’d come from Burger King next door, & this let the whole meal down. For $7.50 as an extra side, it was a real let down.

A little pricey, but You can choose the type and size of your steak up to 1000 grams ! They also dry age their own steaks to perfection. A 250g eye fillet, 2 prawns, 2 scallops, garlic butter and fried beans. All washed down with 2 ginger beers came to about $85

The menu sounds great however the portion sizes and food was not reflective of the prices. Our prawn entrée was dry, and so too was the sourdough, the relish served with the sourdough was also quite average and uninspiring to the taste buds. Two of us had the pork belly, it was okay but nothing to write home about. And our other dining companion had the venison (she was quite disappointed at how small her meal was). For dessert we ordered the panna cotta - which was creamy and very flavoursome, how we their version of banoffee pie is worth missing entirely (if you're a huge fan of the original version, like I am). We were hoping the dessert would make up for the dry entrées and small mains but overall it didn't. If you're looking for a place to drink and socialise then the bar is fine for this but the restaurant is not worth the price and I would recommend venturing somewhere else.

Omg!!! What a chef!!! What top quality aged meat cooked to perfection it melted in my mouth and the flavours was mouth watering!! Perfect service and a great price, warm and comfy atmosphere. I had the eye filet to die for with sensational mushroom sauce and yummy chips, and my husband had the best beef Wellington he has ever has with mash, carrot puree, onion with a piece of cheeck that was like butter, followed by the most perfect desert of choc cake with this amazing flavour icecream, and all this other amazing cream, pistachios and toffee. A great place here in Christchurch! When we arrived in town hungry, our hotel host sent us straight there, and it was a great choice. We tried the mussels, the salad, the chicken (which came with broccoli, a rare find so far in New Zealand), the filet mignon, and the ice cream trio dessert, all if which were excellent. There were many more things, from pub fare to fine steaks, something for all tastes.

A warm and welcoming staff are quick to serve you, though happy to leave you to your own devices if necessary. Wine list offers up standard New Zealand options, so you have few reasons to walk away unhappy. Likewise a more acute beer list mixes internationals with one or two locals. Go hear for a satisfying meal.

We have an annual get together with some work colleagues and this was the 3rd year we had been there. Last year the salmon was so I lovely I ordered it again. BIG disappointment. Wasnt well cooked and sat on a layer of very thickly sliced hard tomato and very thickly sliced rounds of mozarella. Not a green or carb in sight and unripe tomatoes with thick slices of cheese were not an ideal combination. Took ages to come and some people and nearly finished before others got their meals there was 12 of us. Sadly will be looking for somewhere different next year .

I organised my 25th Birthday there and the service was great. The staff there were super friendly, helpful and provided me with so many different option to make the event even better. The private funtion room is a good space that wasnt too big or too small and had nice decor and a covered belcony. Also the food provided was delicious!

18th October 2018 - I came here for lunch with friends. We were greeted by a friendly staff (looks like the duty manager), and she showed us to our seats. As for the entrée, we ordered baked dough balls with whipped garlic butter and beetroot hummus. Quite tasty and light as finger foods, and goes well with beers. The dough ball was slightly chewy and might not suit everyone. As for the main course, I ordered grilled gurnard fish 🐟 fillets. Lightly grilled on the outside, and the inside of the fillets were moist (not dry). The fish fillets were lightly seasoned but this seasoning does not infused into the fillets. I do recommend to dip it with the sauce/ condiment. The rustic fries and green salad complement this dish. This is a licensed eatery and you can order alcoholic drinks 🍻🍸🍷🍾🍹🍺. There is an outdoor area for the patrons to have their meals. Smoking 🚬 is only allowed before noon and after 4 pm (i.e. non-smoking between 12 pm to 4 pm). There is a limited onsite parking 🅿.
