Amazing venue, so beautiful. Yum food. Paella wasn't crunchy but still good. The mushrooms croquettes are amazing and we will be back for more of these!!

Faultless service and nice interior. Tapas was overpriced and lacked flavour though. I know Spanish is not Mexican but a chilli option for the calamari is necessary while the tomato thing was also bland. Maybe add Ja'mon to the tapas options?

Food is good. My wife and I had dinner here. The environment is not bad.

Another awesome session at Castro’s. Relaxed, fun day. Perfect way to spend the last afternoon of 2021! Staff are bloody awesome, food delicious and this is our favourite place in Riverside Market in ChCh. A must do and the fit out is amazing!

An amazing meal at this very cool restaurant! My husband and I reminisced about our time in Spain, and found the paella and Sangria to be the closest to what we had in Spain. Great staff and we are looking forward to our next visit. The only thing that would have made it better for us would be a few simple menu options for picky kids like ours.

My family and I came here as we had no where else to go because we forgot to put a booking to another restaurant, but to our surprise this place is amazing. We all loved the delicious food and superb service. All the staff were wonderful and tended to us often. I definitely would come again just to eat the Chorizo Paella! Amazing 10/10!

Good service, we tried the seafood and the chicken and chorizo paellas, both quite good and big size. You might want to preorder as they take quite some time to get cooked. I also liked the decor, lovely and entertaining.

Great location with outdoor area. Both staff members that waited our table were very unfriendly, almost like they were annoyed that we chose an outdoor table. Friendly staff can really make a dining experience more enjoyable, and people remember it.

Second visit to Castro's and I'm not sure how they did it but this visit was even better than our first! These guys and girls are really invested in your dining at Castro's as an experience and not just as a place to get fed. Came in for lunch yesterday because I was craving a steak, was seated by a super friendly waiter who noticed I had a broken elbow and was very accommodating. Sat me down in a comfortable spot and even asked the chef to cut my steak up into even smaller pieces as I would’ve struggled a lot. The steak was amazing and the fries sprinkled with truffle were to die for. Definitely coming back here!

Such a good spot for lunch and a bit of people watching on the balcony. The staff are wonderful - friendly and attentive. The tapas are delicious - great for sharing. Treat yourself and have a jug of sangria in the sun! My second visit and I'll be back. #supportlocal

Went to Castro’s with the family for graduation. We are from Spain so thought this would be a perfect place to celebrate and oh boy were we right! The food was amazing and took us down memory lane and the drinks were spot on! Fantastic place :)

Good ambience. Seafood paella was great! Sangria served in cute glass jar. The octopus was only downside as bit slimy and bland. (I normally love octopus but couldn’t finish) They have happy hour, I would love to go again for drink and other tapas to try.

Thank you to the whole team at Castros for going over and above for our friends farewell dinner on Saturday night. The food was delicious and plentiful (flavourful, not spicy like I pressumed spanish food to be), the ambience warm and inviting, with great staff who were pleasant and helpful the whole night long. So if you're looking for a place to hold a special occasion with friends/family I would absolutely recommend Castros. This has been our 5th time there and everytime its been a delight 💃 Be sure to try their pretty drinks menu and all paellas are amazing, thank you

Great atmosphere (musician playing the guitare, decoration and heaps of light), very nice and smiling staff, very tasty authentic paella ! I would recommend ! Only negative is the weak sangria, that tastes nothing like real Spanish sangria.

Great place! The tapas took me back to Barcelona and the Sangria was lovely. We had tapas as we were hungry and couldn't wait for the paella (30 min wait time). We had: tomato salad (5/5), mushroom croquettes (5/5), patatas bravas (5/5), venison tartare (3/5), pan con tomate (5/5). Red and Rose sangria (red was the best). Next time we will try the paella...

With a friend I had lunch at castros. This is the second time I have been here and both times everything was superb. The food is out of this world and reasonably priced. We had mushroom croquettes, fennel salad and asparagus with ricotta and hazelnuts. I felt like fine dining. Great views, Spanish music makes you feel you are back in Spain and the staff are quick to serve and flexible and accommodating. Highly recommended

I can't recommend Casto's highly enough! The staff were attentive and the food divine. The dining environment transported us to a little bit of Spain.

Absolutely outstanding food, team and ambiance! We were a family group of 16 meeting together for the first time in years. The whole team were so lovely and welcoming and the food was absolutely devine. I can't even tell you which was my favourite dish as they were all so delicious - I know I'll have to go back a few more times to make that decision!

Came here for lunch today and had a bunch of starters the Chorizo was fantastic and the prawns were absolutely delicious. Also our server Sam was amazing and explained everything perfectly. I would definitely recommend for anyone who is into great beer, food & service.

Except the price of some tapas, everything was great. Really warm and nice decoration, the squid and octopus tapas were perfectly cooked and yummy. Same for the mushrooms croquettes. Just so good! Red sangria was good as well. Honestly, one of my best tapas experience. Good service.

If you frequently have menu envy then Castro's will be the place for you! Lots of little sharable dishes on the menu that are all beautifully presented and delicious. Sangria goes down a treat as does the seafood paella (30 min wait on that so if you're keen, either let them know in advance or order first thing when you walk in). With both indoor and outdoor seating, friendly staff, great food and interesting vibe, Castro's is definitely the restaurant to go to when you're in town.

The Castro's team curated a special menu and margarita masterclass experience for my mum's birthday lunch. The food was beautiful and authentic, Danny the waiter was so fun and the best host! Mum's friends are already talking about doing the same thing for their birthdays. A big thanks to the team and superstar Danny for making it come together perfectly.

Excellent food and brilliant service. We've been in for dinner on at least five occasions in the past year and have never been disappointed. Always nice to see the same staff working (low turnover in staff is a credit to strong leadership). See you again soon!

Was super yum! Really good place to share and try lots of new things. There wasnt anything we ordered that we didn't love including drinks! Service was really quick and they checked in to see how we were doing. Seating was comfy and atmosphere wasnt too loud or crazy

Unfortunately we could not get the Agus Tartare, which in our opinion is the best in Christchurch. But there are plenty of other options, so we tried the chorizo, the fried chicken and the mushroom croquettes, and they were all very good as well. Beautiful food, nice variety, attentive staff. This is fast-becoming one of my fave Christchurch eateries. Go with 3 or 4 friends and share - a couple tapas each and a paella to share and you can't go wrong. Highlights for me are the croquettes, the mushrooms, the patatas bravas, the fried chicken, the chorizo. YUM

Cosy atmosphere with good selection of food and great service

Great vibe in this place and a very popular hangout spot. Great place for a night out or after work drinks. Food taste very good and I loved the drink selection. Awesome presentation of beverages. Decor is outstanding. Pricing on the higher end of the market.

Chose Castro's for a special lunch with my daughter who loves nachos. We were disappointed to discover they had been taken off the menu the day after we booked, however, the Chef very kindly offered to make them for us specially and I have to say they were the best Nachos we had ever had!!! (My daughter had the vegetarian and I had the meat). This was our first visit and it certainly won't be our last - the staff were fabulous, the location is perfect - definitely 5 stars!! (But please put the nachos back on the menu!! :) )

Great location and really knowledgeable cocktail guy...only disappointment was so many smokers! Reminded me of the old days when you go home smelling of cigarette smoke.

The food was amazing, atmosphere totally authentic Spanish and the Sangria was fabulous!! Only reason it was not a five is because we did have to wait quite a bit to get a waiter to check on us for drinks but other than that it was flawless! We will definitely be back!

I staggered in for a late Sunday dinner and ordered the prawns and something else sea-foody, can’t remember it’s name. It was literally the best food I’ve ever eaten. I HAVE to get back there. With someone I can order huge quantities of food in front of without judgement.

Located on the second floor of Riverside market next to the lift. Looking out to st marks school. Outdoor seatings available and would be quite nice on a sunny day. Well decorated interiors. Tapas style food sharing. Aged beef starting from 500-600g depends on the cut, which is $13 per.100g, this could be described better on the menu, but staff has explained to us very clearly before we ordered so it wasn't a problem. Beef are well cooked and the taste was great.

It was OK, was a bit surprised they didn't have a jug of water for the table and they never offered a refill (I'm sure they would have directly asked). The pricing was decent enough, my food was fine (nothing I would go back for) my wifes she barely ate, the nachos not being what she expected at all (not that it was undercooked or any such issue) NB she's Texan and was looking forward to it. All in all not bad - just not what we would expect.

Amazing service and food! The bar staff are extremely attentive. Every time I go to Castros Jo (the bartender) knows exactly what wine I would like to drink and the wait staff are fantastic! Every time I come the food is perfectly cooked and tastes amazing. Kudos to the team! You guys are amazing!

We decided to give it a go as it looks great inside. We wandered into the restaurant that was pretty quiet maybe less than 50% capacity when asked if we had booked. We hadn’t booked, the waiter that I believe may have been the manager owner seemed pretty put out by us. We waited to be seated despite there being ample empty tables. Some of the food was fantastic some no so much. We selected 4 plates; the mushroom croquettes were fantastic, the grilled octopus not so much (smelled very fishy and not the fresh kind, barely grilled, slimy just under the surface and quite bland), the muscles $9 for three!? (nice enough but nothing special) The chorizo was tasty but again a little overpriced. I’d like to try again but maybe get a couple of extra plates and try some different things.

Had a good selection of tapas. Waiting staff were attentive and was a nice atmosphere on the deck outside.

Lovely food and we'll surely be back to try more. Relaxed and smiley waiter totally making up for his colleague who was visibly stressed out by having to clear the place for the function coming. What REALLY surprised me was the version of beef tartar I've ordered-still a nice tasting dish in a creative coat, but certainly not a celebration of perfectly tasting raw beef I was hoping for-being very salty and capers playing the main taste, I couldn't get rid of the feeling that I'm actually eating anchovy! Seafood paella, cocktail and churro were very enjoyable. Really appreciate having 0.0% beer available. Thanks

Our meal was just delicious!! We had the 1/2 rotisserie chicken and the chicken paella. Dish was gluten-free and dairy-free and multiple levels of flavor. Ambiance and presentation was excellent. Highly recommend. Service was top notch!

Definitely a concept that's unusual to me personally, ordered a few things from the menu which didn't quite satisfy my pallet, although the atmosphere was good, and the places decor is inviting. Not a bad experience.

Food was nice but slow service and there were a lot of tables around us that were full of dirty dishes when we arrived and still not cleared when we left 2 hours later.

Wonderfully flavoursome dishes. Especially fond of the grilled cos salad with goats cheese, the crispy chicken, meatballs and their steaks. Plenty more to choose from and a well stocked bar with plenty of cocktails on offer too. Very attentive staff. Thank you.

My parents thought I had booked the Argentinian bbq but I took them here instead and we all enjoyed Castro’s more. My dad and I shared the Chuleton and when I say it was good I really mean it was probably the best steak I’ve ever eaten. Also best spot on the terrace to sit on a sunny evening😎 already can’t wait to go next🍷🥩

Fifteen of us went to Castro's for our team Christmas lunch with work and it was fantastic! Great food, tasty sangria, fab location and really good service. We pre ordered food and the staff were so helpful answering all my questions via email. Would definitely recommend!

What a great little spot that is very keto friendly. Food was outstanding and cooked perfectly. Pricing is moderate but considering you can order protein heavy meals/tapas it works out very well. Service was fantastic and prompt. Well done team, we will be back again. And again, and again, and again. I have no idea why this place has negative reviews, the authors are either fussy or don’t know what they’re talking about. Highly recommended

The service was great, location upstairs at Riverside was very cool. . The food was very tasty. We had the tapas rather than mains. However sitting next to kitchen saw great steaks coming for others. and the octopus on the tapas menu well worth having. Well worth a visit

Fantastic food, lovely atmosphere.

Lunch with family and the atmosphere & friendly staff made a very fun meal. Different courses came out staggered and gave everyone a chance to taste. We all were well fed. Would recommend.

The fennel salad (new to the menu) was ridiculously good! Perfect blend of flavours and textures. Compliments to the chef and wait staff for excellent service.

We ordered the seafood paella, plus a few tapas including pulpo (chargrilled octopus), camarones al ajillo (garlic prawns) and mushroom croquettes which were all delicious! Nice ambience and we got to eat outside on the patio on a sunny afternoon.

Overall a pleasant and tasty dining experience, certainly a step up from our first visit when Castro's first opened. The Leeks a la Brasa were amazing and a must try. Venison was well cooked. However, the Mussel Churro was confusing and very bland; surely could do better with an easy replacement (e.g. Garlic Mussels).

Fantastic service, waiter very attentive to my food allergies. Crispy chicken burger was divine and the chips were delicious. A perfect dining experience!

The food was absolutely incredible. However towards around 9pm the music got turned up and I could barely hear myself think let alone have conversation with people. Would’ve been a great experience if the music didn’t get turned up so loud

Yummy food, fun atmosphere, attentive service. Was a cold night and the restaurant got a little chilly later in the evening but overall a great experience.

Nice casual outfit, modern and great Latino atmosphere, nice drink selection, tasty sparkling wine sangria, However tapas are okay ish but came at right time. Waiters and waitresses would need training on food knowledge, the manager should allocate them section for efficiency and avoiding 3 different wait staff asking us if we want a drink in 5 minutes time frame. Will be back thou, this place has so much potential

I’m not sure why this place has bad reviews, we went on 28 Dec for a family dinner. Service was amazing, food came real fast and the food was very good. Loved the decor and had no trouble talking to each other. We would definitely go again and judging by the amount of full tables around us I’m guessing many more will as well.

Visit with friends had a great experience Castros location and fit out are stunning. The menu offers a great selection of shared plates we sampled quite a few Serrano Ham with tomato bread, Grilled Cos Salad, Roasted Leeks, Squid ( super tender ), Octopus, Salmon, Pork meat Balls, and the Wagyu Steak all where great and would order again. Wine list was a focus on great local and Spanish. Don't let the negative reviews put you off I think they have this dialed in now. Would recommend and will be back soon to knock over the rest of the menu.

Although we throughly enjoyed our meal, we were overcharged by $60. Did not realise until next day and talked to someone on the phone. He said to email detail of which we had an apology and they found error and asked for our bank acc number to put money in, which we did. Still 3 weeks later no refund.

Located in the heart of downtown Christchurch, Castro's is a tapas restaurant with a South American flavor profile...Vegetable pieta, Angus steak, chorizo, and so much more. Friendly staff, 2nd story dining...inside or out... Great local hangout!

Had lunch here today, great view from the balcony, staff were very pleasant food was ok, steak a little chewy and chips on the cool side, chicken burger very nice, a little soggy due to coleslaw, maybe better in a separate bowl next time .

Their paella goes off like the last night of fallas. Have biked out to el Palmar a few times for a sneaky lunch paella and can confirm this is authentic on the same level. Would be great to see rabbit on the menu ☺️ Muchas gracias chicos

Wicked fit out, so pretty, friendly staff. Had chicken paella, filled a gap but not memorably, my friends main was pork chop which came with sauce, a small piece of watercress on top and onions, little bit underdone and we wondered where the chips or salads were...

First time and loved the food we ordered for lunch. Definitely going back

Fantastic night with our close friends we tried so many dishes and the service and vibe makes it one of the best in Christchurch.

Very much still finding their feet, no process or rhythm to the staff or service, so service is a bit slow and chaotic. Food is solid but not spectacular, worked our way though most of the tapas menu and nothing really stands out.

Last week we went to Castros for my husband birthday, Such a beautiful restaurant it is castros, the vibes, the awesome mushrooms cróquets and the seafood paella never disappoint me, the staff is very friendly and helpful with any requested service, they help us given a surprise birthday cake to my husband and I really enjoyed!

Most amazing chips 😋 and chicken. Great relaxing spot to have a beer and a snack in the afternoon and have a game of foosball! Looks like it would be great for dinner too. Great friendly staff 👍

We were a group of 16. Great tapas and attentive service though bar staff struggled to keep up. Given they’ve been open only a few weeks I’d put the bar issue down to a learning curve.

There are not enough words to describe how amazing this restaurant is, simply this is the best option to spend time with friends, great food and drinks. 101% recommendable
