Best restaurant for the price in Christchurch in my opinion, friendly but also professional staff. Amazing food for a fair price, great atmosphere. Food is tasty, beautiful and comes in large portions. Perfect if you want a large meal to share with friends and family.

Consistently excellent Costas Taverna is one of our favourite restaurants and every visit confirms why! Tonight, we tried a new dish - warm vegetable salad with falafel- it was sumptuous and delicious. The breads and dips as starters were equally good. A pleasant surprise was a mini dessert- chocolate mousse - to mark my wife’s birthday!

Came here for a delicious dinner. Wow... the food is delicious and the service is outstanding. The ingredients are fresh and fragrant, and the price is within the range that most people can afford. Desserts are not good, and there are normal and small portions for you to choose from. Highly recommend this shop!

Excellent meal here tonight and they were able to squeeze us in because we hadn't booked. Nice atmosphere and we were even asked if we had any foot allergies. An interesting point to note is they have half deserts if you want one and are getting full. Plenty of car parking, and shouldn't have problem in this department.

Wish we had the name of the lady who was serving us that night .. she was really helpful and wait time was a lot shorter than we expected. Great food but a bit overpriced. Staff is forced to repeat a robotic-sounding-script which interrupts the table conversation every 5 minutes or so. I can’t but feel for them. This isn’t a complaint towards the staff members (who are just doing their job) but rather the management.

Friendly service. Great food. We were sat at a table that felt a bit in the way. Lovely atmosphere. Wonderful desserts. The mousse mountain was decadent and matched perfectly with the berry sorbet. The lamb salata was delicious and wonderfully melt in your mouth. Such a big plate that I took almost half home for lunch the next day. My friends mammas moussaka was wonderful also if my food wasnt so good i would have had serious food envy. About $60 for a entree, main, dessert and a cocktail.

The food was great. We ordered the mega souvlaki chicken for 2 people which you get 4 breads, vegetables, 4 sauces, delicious potatoes that are fluffy and 2 large chicken skewers. It is a new build so lacks an authentic feel. The waitress was helpful, polite and even asked if any of us had any food allergies. Which is a first for any restaurant we've been to. It has a selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. Vegetarian options and children's menu. Will be back for sure.

Average Greek food, due to the reviews was expecting better...Friendly waiters. Good portion sized food. The chicken was quite dry in the open souvlaki. The Greek salad had no feta. Calamari was a bit bland but fresh. They ran out of corona. Flaming saganaki was good though :) Lemon lime bitters was a bit diluted.

This is without a doubt, one of my favourite restaurants, so when it came to taking myself out for dinner, you better believe this was my first choice. As usual, the food was excellent, the service was fantastic and the atmosphere was great. I'm a member of their VIP group, which you can join online at their website, and they definitely look after me. I take friends here when they visit and never hesitate to recommend Costas to everyone. Updated 28-02-22 Since I made my original comment, they have dealt with Covid and have added takeaways. Ifni thought they couldn't make this restaurant any better, they have soundly proven me wrong. Now I can stop in in the way home from work and believe me, I do! Regularly! 😁👍

Great food, great service. We booked for 6pm and arrived at 5:30 and we were seated courtiously by our waitress. Tried the Chicken Souvlaki and the Chicken Lemonato. Both dishes very nice and consistent. Next time we will try the Moussaka and other 100% greek dishes.

A lovely experience for dinner. On what would be expected to be a quite Monday night, the place was booked solid for 2 sittings, 6 and 8! A good sign. Went with wife and a friend - I had mussel entrée, generous size and very tasty, and for mains the ladies had souvlaki chicken platters and a Fresco Lemonato Chicken for me. All dishes very tasty, hot and well presented and with generous portions. Reasonable (not expensive) prices. All staff very helpful and polite, and no rushing. Would definitely recommend this place , and will return next time in Christchurch.

After 40 minutes 4 entrees arrived, after an hour we were still waiting for the 4th entree which eventually arrived with the main meal. The four who didn’t have an entree waited 80 minutes for something to eat. The service was simply abysmal and we asked three times for the 4th entree. We were first in the restaurant, a table of 12 came in and were on to their desserts while we were still waiting for our 4th entree. That was our first and last visit. The Grande Meze Platter is a great way to try most of the starters, but I wouldn't recommend to share it with more than 2 people: particularly good the mussles! The main called Golden Falafel Veggie Delight was incredible! The falafels are super fresh and spongy! The Spanakopita Of Kiani (main) was really really good but its size is not as big as other dishes (e.g. the falafel one). The waitresses were very friendly, welcoming and super patient with all our questions! Only downside: the hummus, not really tasty. Highly recommended!

Have been there for birthdays and anniversaries. Good food! They sent you vouchers every now and then if you’re a member. Last time before paying they just asked us to write down the email address- don’t know if it’s the systems problem coz one time I couldn’t find the voucher through my email so we couldn’t use the voucher. If the email address is what they only wanted then the staff should have told us. Anyway, it’s great food and would definitely recommend it.

Costas is amazing! I have been there a handful of times with my in-laws and it's been consistently delicious. We've always gotten the sharing platter with a combination of falafel and chicken. It's massive. The dessert selection is great too - lots of choices (and mini options, if you're stuffed from the mains). This has to be one of the best places in Christchurch.

We absolutely love Costas and would recommend it to anyone be it family or a couple. Whenever we have been there the staff have been extremely helpful and the ambiance there is just delightful. We took our 3 children there for their birthdays (all in August) and they got a card and a wee cake which was very special for them. The food is exceptional (I am really picky) and we have always thoroughly enjoyed our meals there. So if you are looking for a great place to enjoy fabulous food that you don't have to mortgage the house for then this is the place for you...enjoy!!! :)

On the many occasions I have been to Costa's I have been greeted by the lovely staff and amazed at the professional service. The meals are absolutely delicious, and it is a family favourite. Even if we cant book a table due to last minute, we are happy seated in the bar area, the food and service is so good you forget you are seated in the bar area. No matter whether you need advice on what food or drink to get or just general questions about the dishes, the staff are always knowledgeable and helpful. The atmosphere is a good mix of contemporary and classic, they have old styled columns and walls and have these lit by soft lighting. The food and drink are always good no matter what you get, personally I would recommend the souvlakis.

My Star rating would be 4.6. Here is my overly positive feedback for the benefit of your restaurant. Costas Taverna is an exquisitely intimate and inviting place to indulge in good Greek fare. Their mains are gregariously good and only the famished would dare dive into the plate size above regular. Their flambéed cheeses are a sight to behold and a wonder to all senses. We were absolutely in awe of the divine fisherman's catch and chicken lemonato that was presented before us. The decor is delightful and the fabulous notes of jaunty Greek melodies create an authentic ambience. My only critique would have to be towards the Calamari entre which is touted by the establishment as one of their specialities. The Calamari itself was exquisite but I must say the batter tasted like the frozen budget battered morsels one would find from the Pak n Save chiller. I was left underwhelmed and disappointed by this dish and I felt it was the slight glitch on an otherwise unforgettable experience. If you seek to make this one of your signature dishes, perfect your practice as the batter was limp and lifeless. That said, the entre servings are gregarious in proportion. One thing I do highly rate is the beautiful drinks menu offered by your establishment. Your mixology collection of cocktails and mocktails had our eyes jingling with excitement. You succeeded in tempting me to request a Zeus Juice cocktail with Cointreau which was an absolute pleasure on the palate. I would have had it a little more boozier but your bar lad or lass was not far of the mark. I heard from another patron that your Greek mojitos are as magical as a Greek myth. Apparently, your souvlakis are a big drawcard with your local patrons also. Overall, we were very impressed and can't wait to visit your establishment again. Our waiters were very lovely and lively young ladies. Please congratulate both your front and back team.

This is one of our Go To restaurants due to it being child and adult and wallet friendly. They are very accommodating to dietary requirements of gluten and dairy free. The staff are fantastic and always attentive and the food is always of a very high standard. Absolutely fantastic atmosphere. Enough Hubbub to be enjoyable and not overpower conversation. Food Fantastic, you have to try the sun kissed chicken kebab and the Mini Donuts are to die for. We had great staff who welcomed us and then attended our every need without being overbearing or intrusive (thanks Floss the waitress) and the amazing roof lights (stars) gave the impression of outdoors even on the cold southerly night that we attended. This is a must visit and top of our places to eat list!

I have been to Costas Taverna numerous times and enjoyed it every time. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, regardless of whether you are dining as a duo or a big family with a baby. The menu is extensive and delicious, and I love that they offer the desserts in a "mini" size as well, great for the budget and the waistline without having to miss out altogether. Regular offers and incentives make it an easy decision to re-indulge in Costas Taverna. Keep up the good work!

My boyfriend had a discount when we ate here. You just need to sign up with them and enter your birthday. Note that it has to be valid as they're going to check your ID. The food was nice. My bf and I ordered steak. Their appetizer was nice as well (we had fried cheese or something). They gave a mini chocolate mousse (with a candle) for my boyfriend. We sang a happy birthday song for him. It was a great night. Customer service was top notch!

Favourite restaurant full stop for me and my wife to go to. The Souvlaki platters are amazing. The falafel one is the best falafel I've had, hands down. Chicken is also incredibly good. The garlic pita bread starter is outstanding, we always get it when with a larger group (the platters are a good full sized meal for us). Costas Illusion cocktail is very nice, and the frozen granita jug is a good option with multiple people. Always had good experiences here with probably over 10 visits.

We have loved every meal we've had at Costas. Great staff, brilliant food (especially the steak that will melt in your mouth every time) and a wonderful dining experience overall. Mum loves the Chocolate Mountain and I adore those gorgeous Olympic donuts. Suggest you try the tea smoked pork (a little sweet, but the flavours are amazing).

Huge selection of food (so hard to choose a dish!), and beautiful meals. The only downside was the wait time which was approx. 45mins for main meals - we arrived at 7:30pm on a Friday evening and weren't eating our mains until just before 9pm! Also, the lemonata chicken was a huge portion and is absolutely divine just too many veges, in particular, red onion, for my liking!

Excellent ambience and service. The food was wonderful and the servings were huge. We could order three mains for a family of four adults. My favourite is the lamb salad. I've never had such wonderfully done lamb. The desserts are a mix of the exotic and the popular. The Olympic donuts are my family's favourite and they come with four different dips: whipped cream, raspberry sauce, chocolate syrup and plain sugar syrup.

It is a while since we last dined at Costas. When it was in Victoria St we loved it - atmosphere/food/etc. BUT we didn't enjoy our sortie in Cranford St. We were a sizeable group and we were paying.....even more reason not to try again!! We felt "packaged and shunted" when an expensive meal out is supposed to be the opposite. We were squashed in a central table with wait staff trawling both sides, there was no ambience or fun, the food was reasonable although former memories prevailed and the limitations on seating time were horrendous and downright rude! We felt the whole place was just wanting diners money with quick turnover - NOT a pleasant night out. Bring back the old fun relaxed tasty Costas!!

We've been impressed each time we've dined at Costas. My husband and I first went when they were in the city and loved it. We came a short time later with friends to share our discovery of Costas with them! I remember everyone enjoying their meals immensely. After the quakes, we were so sad that they had to close! They were a little cheeky with the Mellon cocktail as the "jug" size you can buy is a very small jug and if you buy a glass individually you get what looks like half the amount you get in a jug which costs little more than twice the price. Also the food was just okay, not very sophisticated at all. Mains portion sizes and atmosphere was the best aspects of this restaurant.

I've been going to Costas Taverna regularly since it opened on Cranford Street, taking different friends each time, and they've all become Costas Taverna converts. The service is spot on, particularly if you haven't been there before as they can recommend meals based on what you like. The meals are very tasty and presented well with the flavours complementing each other well, and the servings are generous. I recommend the cockails too... I recommend booking a time at the start of a seating otherwise you can feel a bit rushed as there are a couple of seatings a night. The fact that the restaurant is packed everytime I go is a great testament to the quality of food and service.

Birthday dinner Saturday 13/12/14 ***** BIG UPS to Costas Taverna :) ***** I booked a table for 2 one day prior to actual booking and received an immediate reply. Thank goodness for advanced technology and yay for immediate responses and answers. Booking confirmed. AWESOME! ***** Using their website, found their site to be one of the best I have used in a very long time. The website was easy to navigate, you need not be a computer geek to nav your way around it at all. Everything was user friendly. ***** Approached reception, let reception know we have a booking, told our table wasn't ready, asked politely to sit at the bar until our table was ready. No probs there. Although our booking was for 8pm - our table wasn't ready for some time after that. Not many restaurants do this but the receptionist that initially greeted us came to speak to us and informed us that the current occupants have been informed about our arrival and let us know that it'll probably only be a few minutes where we can be seated at our table. Seated at table soon after. Waitress introduced herself, took our drinks order and left menu. Drinks bought to table, part meal orders taken, waitress returned as requested by me for remaining order a short time later. Great service! Let's not forget a complimentary shot bought to our table and the explanation was for the delay in being seated at our table. WOW COSTAS this is fantastic. Shots gladly received thank you :) Entree bought out within 30mins. Yummy too. Main meal bought out about 30mins later. Mmmmmmm yummy again Costas. 2 cocktails later, which, if I can say, were the best cocktails I've had in a long time. Not too heavy on the alcohol and went down with ease. I have to mention that not many restaurants have lighter alcohol cocktails available on their menus. Costas do so future diners - enjoy. The atmosphere was really cool. The whole family have eaten here on numerous occasions. Easily one of our favourite restaurants in Christchurch. I always get the kleftiko but my husband swears by the good old souvlaki's! Great meal sizes at an attractive price and service is always extremely good.

Costas Taverna is a fabulous place for the whole family, whether for a special occasion or a casual night out. The menu is well appointed with choices to suit all tastes, from salads, wonderful souvalakis to glorious chargrill steak mains. The option of mini desserts is ingenious, no where else have I seen this. Great if you just want a small sweet treat at the end, especially the turkish delight icecream! And off course an extensive cocktail and ouzo menu. The staff are some of the best in town, always welcoming and smiling. There is also plenty of parking. One of our favourites.
