Highly recommended! We traveled from Waiheke on vacation and our last night we had dinner at Giovanni's. What a good idea! The starters and main courses were delicious! very tasty. We finish with some perfect desserts. Haneka was lovely to us. We will definitely go back!

We had such a nice experience here. The restaurant is stunning & full of character, really cool pictures on the wall. Also the food is some of the best I’ve ever eaten. I’m definitely coming back to have the Giovanni’s favourite pizza as a full meal. Service is so lovely & attentive here, recommend 100% for the whole experience. Thanks Giovanni’s!

In my opinion, food can't hold a candle to Tutto Bene or not really even on par with Formaggios but our party enjoyed our evening here. Nice atmosphere. Our waitress was pretty good with our Large party under level2 conditions and when they burnt my steak (left photo), she was able to get it replaced with the rare to medium-rare I ordered. This is a generous review because the staff seemed very stressed and overstretched. Ordered 4 takeaway pizzas on a grab one so luckily a discount. Paying $25 for each pizza would have been Daylight robbery. Service over the phone was poor but I was willing to let that go for quality food. Upon first look, the pizzas were much smaller than expected and looked very bland. Disappointing to say the least. There couldn't have been more than $2 of toppings per pizza (very meagre) and the taste was sadly on par. Only 3 stars because we had a discount and it was actually edible. Our lips were also covered in charcoal. It says something when the Hawaiian is the best tasting of our four 'authentic Italian pizzas'.

We dined at Giovanni’s for my wife’s birthday. The service was excellent and the food was spectacular. They were fully accommodating to my request and really made the effort to make the birthday experience one to remember. Would definitely dine here again as part of a group or as a couple.

Comfortable surroundings with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Really impressed with the quality of the food which was very tasty and well presented. One of the best lasagnes I’ve had and the deserts are delicious! Excellent experience — highly recommended!

Received a very friendly welcome and almost felt at home straight away. The food was fantastic and very reasonably priced. Enjoyed the desert even more. The live music in the background just added to the whole experience. Would highly recommend.

The food was amazing! My Gnocchi was so light and fluffy and delicious. The service was also fantastic. Cheerful and friendly staff. We will definitely go back and try some of their other mains. I highly recommend Giovanni’s for a delicious meal in a lovely Italian restaurant.

Incredible restaurant. I have been here multiple times now, 5 to be exact, and every time I try something new, the food exceeds my expectations. The service and atmosphere are also perfect. Relaxing and classy. —UPDATE— I would recommend this restaurant again and again. I have been back another 5 times and still the food continues to go past what I had previously expected. The staff really are a treat and I feel so welcomed every time I arrive.

Although our New Year's Day meal was delicious and the waitstaff very attentive the dining experience was marred by the grumpy proprietress who made no bones about reprimanding her staff loudly in our hearing and giving every appearance that she dislikes the business that she's running and has little interest in creating a warm and welcoming environment for her customers. Maybe she was suffering the after effects of too good a New Year's Eve celebration., but that's no excuse for the sour face and unpleasant attitude.

Where to start! The food is mouth wateringly good, the service is amazing, staff are friendly and the environment is quirky and fun. I love that they have a full vegan menu. I've been multiple times and hope to one day eat through the whole vegan menu

I was embarrassed by my son who was constantly telling the teller how much he liked his food... 😀 The ambience was courteous, staff was good, just a small mess up about my entre but they rectified it by complementary entre with my mains. Food was as per hype, good, garnished and warm. Taste was as per liking and quality was astonishingly good. Loved every single morsel. Is pricy but nice

This was one of my easiest 5 star reviews. I'm usually disappointed with Italian restaurants in Christchurch as they tend to be overpriced and very often they don't make their own pasta. At Giovanni's Restaurant everything feels authentic. The decoration is nice, the service is great and the food is fabulous. They didn't try to reinvent the Italian food, they just offer simple but delicious homemade pasta and pizza with good quality ingredients.

The place has a great vibe and beautiful interior. Very friendly staff :) Its a Hit and miss: Hit is, place- location, ambience and staff is great, They also offer a vegan menu which is awesome however the portion size is ridiculously small. You get a main dish for $25 and literally, I counted the Gnocci in my dish which was 9 pieces with some sauce. Its not filling at all, you need 2 mains or actual couple of sides- say about 55-60 per person. They also charge $2.5 per person if you want to cut your own cake (if you’re planning on celebrating birthday or something). For a group of 12 people, it seems like a lot of money. But its kinda justified too in a way that they dont want to promote that.

Best creamy carbonara I've ever had. And that's saying something considering I have to eat gluten free pasta now. Super friendly staff and quiet acoustics (you don't feel like you can hear other tables when the restaurant is full).

Friendly staff, nice setting, and delicious polenta chips. Pizzas were good and tasty, but not quite the authentic Italian pizza we were hoping for, although very close. The bases were a fraction too thick and not very airy. Aperol Spritz went down a treat. Overall a good experience, and one of the better Italian restaurants in Christchurch. 4+ stars.

The toppings on the breads were pleasant but by coming out pre spread it felt like a exercise in austerity and a missed opportunity for some engagement with the meal. We had a wonderful time at Giovannis! It was warm and inviting the staff were lovely and accommodating. After a fantastic day we had Giovanni's recommended by staff at a bar we were having drinks at. Quick check of the menu online and we rocked in. Met by excellent accommodating staff who squeezed our non booked request for a booth for two in. Food was excellent fresh and hand made, having dined at Tutto Bene regularly I found the experience surpassed that which I had experienced there, no negative towards Tutto Bene but the combined package of service, fresh food to our exact request and the general ambiance at Giovanni's was exceptional.

We had high expectations after reading previous reviews. Unfortunately it was a mixed bag for us. We went on Sunday night for First Table dining. We all ordered entrees which were lovely. Arachini balls and mussels. Mains, we ordered the eye fillet steak.Waiter returned to say no steak available!!. We ordered lamb shanks, which were cooked beautifully. Desserts were nice but not served as described on menu.. All in all, what we had was nice but not what we were hoping to have. Nice atmosphere and decor. Might return but might ring ahead to check if steak is on the menu.

I absolutely love wood fired pizza and this restaurant didn't disappoint! We had the polenta chips and OMG they were definitely a hit. I never usually take time to write reviews unless I have something to complain about but this place was just too good not to rave about. Service was impeccable, we were greeted at the door by the owner who was incredibly warm and welcoming. From the second we sat down, we were blown away - the food, decor, atmosphere and service was outstanding. Great value at $20-$25 a meal and located in the heart of the city. Highly recommend to anyone, groups big or small, if you want an authentic Italian experience in Christchurch.

Not a bad place to eat, service was friendly and attentive, atmosphere was nice. The foods presentation was to a high standard, but didnt blow us away with amazing flavours. The pizzas were ok but after a few slices we were over it. Reheating the leftovers the next day was dry and became bird food. The pasta itself was nice and authentic but the meat and sauce tasted just like we make at home nothing to rave about. The best past were the mozzarella cheese sticks which were amazing. Everything else was stock standard and quite overpriced compared to other Italian restaurants we dine at. Overall a pleasant evening but we wont be rushing to go there again.

Welcomed at the door by a member of staff. Provided me with a take away menu as requested. Very clean upon entry. Tables set, a very Italian feel with Italian music and pictures on the wall of prominent Italians. Staff inside very polite and willing to help with decisions of choices to make. Other patrons appeared very happy with their meals. Menus both take a way and dining in looked very appetizing. My pint of Perroni was poured well. Tasted good and presented well. Over hearing other patrons complimenting food and discussing the website pictures do the food no justice I would definitely eat here and use the take away menu. All the Italian classics with a new Zealand flair. Well worth the visit

Had takeaway, when I went to pick up the food felt it was a waste not having food at their restaurant as it looked very comfortable and inviting. Florentino salad was very delicious with generous cubes of cheese and salami that made the dish very complex, not a salad eater but enjoyed the dish. Pasta well made and cooked with delicious sauces. Giovanni's pizza and mussels could be improved, but overall was very impressed with quality of food and service.

We used a christmas gift voucher (Grab One) from our daughter that entitled us to 2 Entrees & 2 Mains. On a cold, damp Christchurch mid week night the place wasn't that busy - one large group of 12-14 ladies out having a good time, other than that just 4-5 tables of 2-4, so the place looked pretty quiet. On booking, I was told we'd need to decide on either 5.30, or 7.30 (2 booking times), the staff said that normally they're pretty much fully booked hence the 2 sittings. A few wee glitches during the evening, but nothing major, and any glitches were very well smoothed over by the lovely lady we assumed to be one of the owners, she was a really super person / chatty / happy / informative / caring. There were 2 other staff on duty as well, all very attentive. Meals were lovely, plenty of options. We also had desserts (excellent, and a few drinks - plenty of drink options on the menu). Very spacious, and uncramped environment, heaps of space. All in all, highly recommended.

The food is delicious but the service can use some attention. We waited 30min for our wine, 1h for our mains, after getting the desert menu we were tired of the waiting and decided to leave. Long waits and not very friendly service. It might have been busy but we felt that they wanted us to leave as soon as possible, such a shame!

Had the arancini and mozzarella chips which were perfectly cooked and followed up with the Canterbury Beef (perfectly rare) and the Porchetta pork belly.
