Unfortunately hard to say something about the tavern itself. We were passing through and had our two little dogs with us, so we had a takeaway coffee only. The view from there is absolutely stunning.

A visit to the Hilltop Tavern is a must if you are in the Akaroa area. The views from the Tavern are amazing, especially looking down over the Bay. This is a delightful place for morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea. The drive up is very scenic too.

Hilltop Tavern is a wonderful for many reasons and I'll be listing some of them in this review. - Great venue inside and outside seating with enough seats so you can bring friends and/or family .A great view and a paddock with when I was the one big wooly sheep. -The staff are lovely people that make the experience even better - The food there is to die for. The meals there are divine and the taste and quality will never let you down Those three reasons are three of many reason of why to go to the wonderful Hilltop Tavern

Lovely place, the food is tasty, pizzas are great, service is very good and welcoming. The view is fantastic and there's even a playground for the kids! What more could you ask for?

WOW!!!! This place is amazing!!!!!! The view is breathtaking!! We tried the bread board and it was pleasant! Well worth the trip!!! The scenery is epic! Most beautifull spot ever! Will return just to sit and look at the veiw. STUNNING!!

A definite must stop. We walked up Summit road for a couple hours to this destination spot. Perhaps walking up and back down the beautiful rolling hills influenced our experience of this place. It's run by a very nice family and there was live music when we arrived. Great place to bring sketchbook and watercolors. The best walk home from a bar as well. Pretty good beer too.

Wow! Great place. Just happened to be driving back into ChCh from Akaroa and felt very thirsty and... there the Hilltop Tavern was! Super convenient. I was hoping for just a wee drink and they had big ones too! and great fries. Everything I needed including a super view. Get in there!

Had a shared seafood platters for lunch and the food was the best. I can recommend the food and the service.. the platter consisted of prawns, fresh fish, mussels, salt and pepper squid, fries and ciabatta bread. The sauce in the mussels was exquisite. Excellent experience, we went on the Thursday 3/12 at about midday-early arvo. Didn’t get the bloke behind the bars name but he gave us top notch service despite being the only one on the bar at the time he was a bit rushed of his feet was still a consummate publican and provider of delicious chilled pints of cider and the best fry’s you can wrap ya laughing gear around I’m telling ya! All topped off with a lovely dog friendly outdoor area for our collies to run around in while we took in the view. Thanks mate!!

Beautiful spot to stop as you make your way to Akaroa. View from the garden is spectacular even on a cloudy day. Come in for the view but stay for the food. Only has the homemade sausage roll and it was delicious, have a snack enjoy the view.

Lovely view good atmosphere, relaxing. Today was short staffed and had to wait five minutes before they could take my order, but I got my cuppa straight away. Customers would rather have their order taken straight away and wait at the table for ten minutes rather than stand at the counter waiting for a staff to take their order. Something to work on, staff. Also tables and chairs need replacing and more art on the wall would bring it cheer in this pristine location overlooking Akaroa harbour.

The hilltop tavern is a restaurant on a very nice location. Perfect views towards Akaroa. We had the 'Salt and pepper fried squid' which was good! Afterwards we had a pizza with chicken, brie and cranberry which was too fat and really disappointing, especially considering the price of $26.

The fish and chips were fantastic, the service great, and the views gorgeous. You can't really ask for anything better than this. It's right on the way into Akaroa, so it's a great stop for a bite to eat in or out of the area. The outdoor seating is limited in a busy day, which is really the only downside to this place.

Came here for a panini and wedges and was NOT disappointed. Came with an absolute ton of wedges and a very big panini which was more than enough to eat. Stop here while on my way from christchurch to akaroa. The location is good and the pics I took is exactly at the place. The have another lookout point far below but I think this is the best. Can stop by here and grab a coffee and enjoy the scenery here. It is really really good.

Great little spot when touring around Akaroa, we stopped in and decided why not, get the olives and the garlic bread. Holy SCHNIKEY this is the best garlic bread and olives I've had, and I've had them all over Spain and Italy. Pro tip: the extra oil and chile flakes in the olive bowl makes for excellent additional dipping of the garlic bread. I would take a tour around Akaroa just for the garlic bread. Allow me to correct - I would fly to New Zealand, take the tour, and punch a baby unicorn just for the garlic bread. We saw a few other plates others had ordered that looked fantastic - on the lookout for a baby unicorn so we can head back soon and try them!

Feb 2015: Don't let the "tavern" name fool you - the food here is excellent, esp the polenta fries - my favourite. Stunning views from here too.. Update..Mar 2017.. New owners, no more polenta fries.. 😞 Visited on a Tuesday at 3pm and the place was closed with a simple "Closed" sign on the door.. No hours posted. I suggest you call before visiting - the current hours on Google Maps aren't correct (at the time of writing..)

A friendly cafe and restaurant with amazing view to the bay. There's an open-air terrace with some toys for the kids and generally the whole place is quite family friendly. A must stop if you are passing by the peninsula.
