We stopped at Sun Dog Diner the other day for dinner. What a cool vibe this place has! Great location, very friendly staff. Menu was crazy but cool. Food was awesome - the fries are some of the best I have ever had. Would recommend this place to anyone and definitely go again!

Cravings satisfied. Ordered: Some Bennie I used to Know, Bob's Burger, and Mom's Lasagna. Oh!! and nachos too (forgot to take a photo) Burger was so juicy slammed with perfect pickle relish. Excellent combination with the cheese. Next, Mom's Lasagna was great too. Portion looks small but the container was deep enough to fill one man's tummy. Love the cheese and sauce of it. Nachos were nice too. Generous amount of meat and cheese. A dash of cilantro was a good contrast too. Like the presentation and combination of ingredients they used in Eggs Benedict. Love the vibe inside. Pretty chill and got some interesting references from famous American Icons. Super friendly staff too.

Best American style breakfast yet. Lived in New Zealand for 3.5 years (from America) and have yet to find a decent American breakfast. Came for the chicken fried steak. Amazing sausage gravy to top it off. Also had the pancakes which were great as well. Very friendly staff and cannot wait to go back.

Came for a few tacos on taco tuesday. was blown away with how friendly and knowledgeable the staff are. on top of this, their menu is tastefully put together, the food is tasty and super fresh and the atmosphere is great - feels quiet and calm even on a busy road. will absolutely be back.

Fantastic atmosphere and lovely staff this is my favourite restaurant- the menu definitely offers something for everyone. I tried the biscuits and gravy had always wondered what this was and now it is a must have. The cocktails offer a nice addition and for breakfast I loved the zany teapot and cheerful server! Have recommended to all my family/whanau and this combination of a great menu and friendly staff is much appreciated in the current trying circumstances of covid, stress and everyone getting overwhelmed. Sundog is one of my favourite places to eat in Christchurch. The food is consistently incredible, so much so that I constantly have food envy.. but I can rarely go past my all time favourite Mac n Cheese. They have excellent vegetarian and vegan options, as well as great drinks (I can 100% recommend their Arnold Palmer). The staff are also 10/10 - super knowledgeable, lovely, and just really want you to have an amazing experience (shout out to Hester). Thanks Sundog, you know I’ll be back :)

Been in a few times over the past year and am always pleased to find clean facilities, kind friendly staff and amazing food. A couple favorites that are worth trying are their Mac n cheese and oreo dessert pie!!! So good.

wait staff were wonderful! but food was sub-par regarding quantity and quality for the steep pricing. Also, several dishes contained coriander when not shown in menu. With coriander being so controversial it would be good to have the option of removal

Cozy small place with american vibe. They dont have decaffeinated coffee which is unusual for a coffeeshop. Hot Chocolate tasted like an instant cadbury powder i can make my own. The Burt-rito is tasty but not so filling. The pancake is fluffy and nicely done too but lacks presentation. My friend had steak and said it was good. As a catholic i feel offended of their blasphemous decoration. Friendly staff though. It has a community warmth.

Loved the food and the atmosphere. Six of us had brunch on Sunday morning. 3 had the Phillie Steak sandwich, one had the Poultrygeist and the kids had the shorty stack. The food was excellent and enjoyed by all. A busy place that you have to make a booking for but we'll worth a look.

Fantastic! Absolutely love this place due to its great, healthy and delicious food! The vegan combo meal consisted of half a sandwich, salad and fries! Sounds quite usual, doesn't it? But when the plate came it topped all my expectations: crispy sourdough bread coated roasted kumara, beetroot, fresh lettuce, creamy guacamole etc. and the side salad was a fine mix of tomatoes, onions, slaw or so, cilantro!! Buenísimo! I've already been convinced but I got even more enthusiastic when I tasted the fries that were just on the spot: crunchy but still tender. Even the ketchup tasted exceptional, perfectly sweet and seasoned! Really, one of my best lunch experiences so far. Loved it! Guys, you did an amazing job!!! Highly recommend it!

Another of my fav places to dine in chch. Great service, and consistently good food! The breakfast menu is worth a try and the pics below show some dinner options. Excellent vegetarian options. Make sure to try their bottomless coffee and leave room for their take on the Cinnabon... cinnamon girl! Top tip...if you’re one of the last ones there at night you might just get this on the house!

Often the retro-kitsch US-diner schtick falls a bit flat, especially down-under, but Sun Dog Diner is the first place I've been to that does it well. Menu has heaps going-on and you really get the full flavor and experience in every bite. Proper good stateside service as well, interesting decor. Loved the homemade pop-tart. Not an everyday brunch but definitely a place to go with friends.

Perfect evening, I had a creamy vegetable soup chowder, fried chicken with salad and chips (couldn't eat all as I wanted there home made desert) food, drinks and service you can not fault 100% highly recommend. We visited for the Valentines Day brunch - had the half size bene, half Reverend Horton hash (new favourite), and some French toast sticks, along with the bottomless coffee, and a verrrry nice cocktail that I forget the name of. It was slightly blue (but not horribly so), and very tasty. Every time we go here, I think "we should come here more often", so yeah - we'll be doing that. Great staff and service, excellent list of beers, desserts also looked fantastic too.

I had the joy of dining in at the sun dog diner. We had a booking, so upon arrival it was swift and easy to be seated and already browsing a jaw dropping menu that gets your stomach excited for what will be plated infront of you. The wait time for our meal was perfect and it allowed for a small conversation and time to take in the restaurant and what an iconic place they had created. A small slice of Geeky paradise! Our meal was delicious and the portion sizing was plentiful. I tried the lime key pie and it was tasteful and mastered to perfection. The texture and flavour was impeccable. I highly recommend this diner as a place to visit on your next outing for dinner.

Best authentic southern to mid west dining experience. American Chef. Try the unique much loved mid west 'biscuits and gravy' (biscuits are more like scones, not cookies). We've spent aot of time in the mid States and the food here is 2nd to nothing i've had there. Brilliant!

Lovely little place with a nice outdoor patio. They offer all day breakfast (I had the breakfast burrito... The "Burt Reynold's" maybe? It was delicious). This is an American themed diner in the heart of Christchurch! Not only is the food authentic and delicious, but the music, staff & decor is all in sync and makes it a very pleasant, fun place to go. I've been there with family, friends, and even alone--and the experiences were all great, which is not something I can say of many places at ALL. Currently the Sun Dog Diner is my favourite eatery in the city, and I don't say that lightly! It's not extreme, fancy high cuisine, but it's not trying to be: it's American diner food done right and, honestly, better than several diners I went to in the USA! Been here couple of times but recently had a Bob's burger with fries and unfortunately, the fries were solid...really overcooked. The battered onions inside the burger were similar, particularly with the batter being crispy. Rest of burger good. Didn't really enjoy it though, but loved the raspberry milk shake desert. That was brilliant. Disappointed with the main meal given cost $25.

I love this restaurant. The food is so good, it's fresh and exciting but with a homage to the classics. The only "problem" is the menu is too good. There are so many great options, it's hard to choose! I've tried many of the vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, several cocktails and shakes, and a few desserts. My favourite when I'm wanting something really filling is the mac n cheese. When they call it the greatest show on earth, they mean it. As a snack to share I go for an order of chips with their veg chilli and cheese. It's to die for. Writing this review has me desperate to go back for dinner tonight!

We were in Chch for the weekend and heard about this place. It did not disappoint! We had the Jenga Toast and Philadelphia Cheese steak. Highly recommended. Edit: Had to take a couple of stars off for the service at the end. To hear your staff be bubbly and fun to other customers and be cold and rude to us when you said "We need the table by 10am" as you took our plates is not how we expected to be treated in this day and age.

Sun Dog Diner is my favourite restaurant. Full Stop. They use fresh ingredients and servings are generous. The decorations and menu references satisfy my inner nerd. Furthermore, the staff is aways friendly and go the extra mile to make my visits great. Try the Philadelphia Experiment, an excellent philly cheesesteak sandwich.

Awesome burgers. Seems to be a rotating burger of the week but the one I had was best burger experience in Christchurch in ages. I've tried a lot of places and this is the clear winner so far. Friendly service and good coffee. Just wish the seating was a bit more comfortable as that part definately doesn't have a diner feel at all.

Very good American dinner. Delicious food, although on the sweet side, even for savoury dish (the hollandaise sauce could almost be served as lemon pie topping, that's how sweet things are!). We had two of the special breakfast dishes created for their 3y anniversary, and we truly enjoyed our meal there. Minus one start for the poached eggs that were set and not runny as it should be 😉.

I've been here multiple times and enjoyed everything I've tried so far, great food and service. There was a slight delay once on part of a meal so they brought out the sandwich as it was ready so I could eat with my fellow diners and then the side when it was ready just a moment later, they turned a mistake into great service. The potato skins and chips are amazing. The shake was massive, thick and flavourful, sodas with unique delicious flavours, damn good beer.

Not a lot of gluten free options unfortunately. I must have gone on a bad day as the only gluten free main wasn't available that day. Best to check before you go just in case. The cheese philly fries were quite nice but they weren't a main. Other than that everyone else in my group seemed to really enjoy it. So well done anyway.

Great food! We came here twice in a three-day stop in Christchurch because the first time was so good. The staff are so welcoming and attentive and the decor is very cool. The big breakfast (I can't remember what it's actually called on the menu) was amazing and well big enough for the two of us. Some of the usual options (eggs, bacon) but also black beans and a delicious, fresh salsa which I loved. We loved the addition of mini biscuits and gravy and a little cinnamon roll to finish. Our lunch the next day was fantastic. The sandwich, side and salad special was cheap and delicious, and my partner loved his Elvis burrito. We also had coffee and a Cookie Monster afterwards which was absolutely spectacular! Can't recommend this place enough.

Today we went to lunch with a group of friends to bid a fond farewell to one of our group of 14, we were greeted with a nice welcome from the staff as we arrived, then we sat down, I had the Bobs Burger which this week was “Pickled Pink” a damned fine double cheeseburger with pickles and the nicest bun I have ever had plus a side of wonderfully seasoned hand cut fries, both were awesome and a good sized portion. And because I suffer from fomo and gluttony I also had a slice of the chocolate bourbon pecan pie with ice cream, whoa! Folks thought I was crazy to have a dessert after such a hearty lunch, but didn't they say the same of Werner Heisenberg? I smugly (and somewhat selfishly) muched my way through this slice of choc-nutty-bourbon infused conscious altering pie and never looked back, I decree that I am better person for it, and judging by the darting envious eyes everyone else thought the same. Can't wait to come back soon.

Still, I’ve always found something very tasty - I recommend the Trailer Trash Pork. The selection of beers on tap are very good (limited to four but good choices). If you are into cocktails they seem to have a pretty extensive range. I will always be looking at the Sun Dog as a tasty and affordable stop when in Christchurch.

Things we tried: * the espresso booze milkshake - this is a proper American milkshake, super thick and delicious * mulled wine - this isn't an American thing, so I'm glad they made an exception and put this on the menu because it was divine * cinnamon roll - perfect mix of buttery brioche, cinnamon sugar, and cream cheese frosting * old school bene - good as * Reverend Horton heat hash - solidly good, and our server gave me the excellent idea to add just a wee bit of Tabasco to give it that final kick The staff were welcoming, lovely, and gave great recommendations when we got stuck between multiple delicious options. Chicken fried steak was well made but was a bit dry. Scrambled eggs were tasty but I bit into an eggshell. Hash browns were more like mashed potatoes but were delicious nonetheless. The gravy was interesting to say the least. Overall I enjoyed the dish despite the setbacks. 7/10. Nice environment and a great place to chill. Dig the name too. 4 out of 5 stars.

This place is fantastic! The food is inspired and so very good, with a large variety, including all-day breakfast, snacks and mains for a big feed. The staff are friendly and attentive. The decor and the names of dishes and drinks are creatively referencing pop cultural milestones. The thought and attention to detail in every aspect speak to a real passion for providing an all-round amazing dining experience. Watch out for themed days, such as Taco Tuesday or the monthly quiz night. Be there, or you're square!

The menu may look expencive but it is a lot of food! You can ring up and pre order if just going for a lunch but they are very efficient and everything was pretty good. It would be a nice place for a date and the outside food court is a sun trap if you want a couple of drinks with mates outdoors. It is not a massive place where you are lost or ignored and well worth a visit in my opinion.

We came here for the Hoity Toity Degustation menu with McCleods Brewery. It was fantastic to have an understanding of the beers and the food as we went through each one. This place is, without a doubt, one of my favorite restaurants on the planet. Their decor is creative, entertaining, and a great conversation topic. For a good laugh, you can check out the descriptions on their wine menu. And their food is truly exquisite. Their Philadelphia Experiment rivals a Philly Cheesesteak made by a chef from Philadelphia, and their Macaroni and Cheese is so divine that it redefines what the dish can be. Whether you're a local or just visiting Christchurch, Sun Dog is an absolute must-visit.

Popped in on a Friday night with no reservation. They seated us straight away at the little table by the bar and said we were welcome to switch tables if we liked when one came available. We decided to stay where we were and enjoy the busy atmosphere. It took us a while to decide what to order - everything looked amazing! Eventually we both went with the Blue Plate Special to maximize the number of things we got to try. I got the Trailer Park Pork sandwich with Mac'n'Cheese, husband got Philadelphia Experiment sandwich with Buzzcocks fried chicken. Every single item on our plates was flavour balanced to perfection, even the garnish coleslaw. It didn't look like a huge meal on the plate but by the time we finished we were both stuffed (I ate all the mac'n'cheese even though I really didn't need to, it was that good). When we went to pay they apologized for the long wait, it was a Friday night so we didn't think we'd waited too long but they insisted and gave us a free slice of blueberry pie to take home. It became breakfast the next day and was amazing! No idea how you make pie taste so good. Anyway, we well very definitely be back, many times. Food is on point, atmosphere is buzzing, staff are friendly and helpful, decor is interesting and slightly geeky, prices are extremely reasonable - what more could you possibly want?

We found this place randomly from Gmap, it didn't show when I sear hed for best breakfast Christchurch. I was not disappointed. It's a quaint retro style diner with actual diner menu items. Forget your usual burger diners, this is diners with chicken fried steak, gravy and biskits, and great selection of dessert items and drinks. Fairly priced, great taste and portions. The staff was very friendly but in a casual manner. There are two arcade games to play as well. The decor is spot on. Will definitely come back. Whatever food you order, it tastes - no, it feeeels better with their signature slurp.
