Reviews of Taste of Kiwi - Springfield cafe
L. S.
We were driving from Greymouth to Christchurch and stopped here for an afternoon pick me up. It’s a lovely cafe with a great selection of treats and the most friendly staff! We enjoyed our conversation with the barista as we sipped our perfect lattes.
The cafe has plenty of seating both indoor and out,
and has a little gift shop with cute NZ gear. Oh and they offer free wifi 🙌
A. M.
Food was delicious, and staff were kind. They even gave complimentary Easter chocolate eggs to the little ones which was amazingly kind and caring.
R. S.
This charming place just gets better and better. The guy behind the counter is very personable and remembers his customers. I think that the best long black in Canterbury is sold here and a lovely bit of Kiwiana is the cheese and marmite toastie. The perfect stop between the West and the east.
P. Z.
It's a cosy cafe with gourmet pies ($6.50 or so) and nice paninis ($8-9). They serve the Hummingbird coffee. Besides the food, they also sell some local products, snacks and souvenirs. It's been our go-to breakfast place every time on the way to Arthur's Pass.
E. M.
Lovely atmosphere, food and great selection of toys for little ones.
Z.
Really lovely cafe and great Benny! Friendly staff and great garden place! Definitely will be back!

Stopped in for a morning coffee and slice on the way to Castle Hill. Superb coffee, .and we were very happy with our snickers, slice & custard slice. It was busy but didn't take long for out coffees to be made. There was plenty of parking and a gift shop was inside.

An adequate cafe, but you can do better elsewhere. There are much nicer cafes that do provide interesting food, Kiwi charm and a bit of creative zing.
The advantages: handy location, clean, good strong coffee with a good crema, and the ice cream bar was a hit with the busload of foreign. tourists.
The food is so so and uninspired. I had Nachos and they were the least appealing food after four days in the South Island.
The ambience was unappealing with poorly laid out tables, a tinny music system, outside tables in a row on asphalt, no WiFi.

Stopped here during a road trip, really good breakfast and service. The banana boss smoothie is delicious!

For a very small town, stop on the road kinda of a thing the chicken waffle really surprised me. Was fresh, great portion, tasty.
There isn't much of an ambiance, but it's a good stop.
M. S.
Really enjoyed the bacon and eggs! Place was very busy but the staff are super fast and efficient and even continued to bus tables (which most cafes give up on when busy). Chicken and waffles is a really interesting dish and the chicken had lovely spices. My only critique was that the poached eggs were overdone (not runny) and I badly needed WiFi which there was none.
J. L.
I ordered a fish and chips, I like it’s a big portion, f&c both crispy, fresh with salad.
But I don’t like the special ketchup, taste weird.
The iced chocolate was nice, and I’m surprised there’s a scoop of ice cream inside.
B. C.
Quite limited choice of food for lunch. But we truly enjoyed the chicken waffles. Very delicious! Good cuppa coffee too!
C. I.
Such a great little cafe! We had a veggie breakfast and it was so delish. Coffee was also great. A gem in this teeny town indeed
N. G.
Great service. Just stopped here for a coffee and ended up buying a number of ice creams as well. Very good service and great menu and selection (incl. Veg options). Would recommend if on the way.

We stopped here on our way back to Christchurch from Castle Hill Conversation Area. It’s a lovely cafe. Their kitchen had closed by the time we reached there but we could order some hot drinks and also the some food from the display rack. Had Chicken, Cranberry and Brie Paninis, they was delicious (completely forgot to take photos of it) and hot chocolate which was amazing too. Very nice staff and service. The cafe also had souvenirs to purchase.
D. A.
This was a wonderful place on the way to Arthur's pass, one of the few stops/coffee shops on the way. Visited on the way there and back.
They also have a small gift shop set up, nice seating indoors and outdoors. Though no wifi I was able to get. They also have nice ice cream selections
S. V.
It’s a rustic little cafe with pies, desserts, ice cream, soups, shakes, and a ton more! We got the veggie nachos and they were delicious. Breakfast stops at 11:30am.
Would recommend!

Alittle over priced. A Tan slice for $10, (**Edit as actual price is $6** my mistake) on the shelf behind the glass, the slices were put together to look like a whole piece, until its purchased and we found to be pre cut. It tasted good though. (sorry we ate abit before photo was taken)
We paid $17 for two stickers, a large Latte, (is a regular cup size) and a tan slice $6 (edited).
***Edit for owners response, I apologise, yes the tan slice is $6, we honestly thought the slice was both as they were closely put really close together, the tan slice was really good tasting.
Thank you for the $1 discount on the stickers, I appreciate it. Your store has a really nice atmosphere inside***

Awesome cafe
Great coffee!
Clean and well appointed
Friendly staff
The nachos are so good we ordered a second plate
The green smoothie is pretty darn good too!
Lots of lovely shopping to do whilst waiting for your order ;-)
L. W.
Such a lovely place to stop, lots of great gifts. The food is amazing and the staff are so friendly and lovely to talk to. Great atmosphere to be in. Would highly recommend stopping here on your way through.
N. H.
A great cafe with awesome coffee and really friendly staff. Perfect stop on the way to the mountains. Highly recommend

Speaking for a group of mature motorcyclists , I can safely say "We Love the place" It used to have a horrible reputation , but we find the cafe a perfect destination for out Thursday Trips. Good parking places and friendly service. This place is permanent destination on our places to go list. Sorry I wont give 5 stars because no where is perfect , only close to it . Harry Brown for the All Bran Group

What a lovely place! I popped in with my mum today, had a delicious blueberry muffin and the Green machine smoothie made with oat milk. What a treat, so scrumptious!! All staff were very friendly but out lovely surver Hashin (apologize on the spelling 😉) was so amazing!!!
K. P.
Nice place with good coffee, the breakfast was ok (very dry bacon and quite small portion), unfortunately it is slightly overpriced for what it is
B. G.
We stopped here for brunch on our daytrip. Lovely souvenirs, a bit different then the others in the area, nice clean cafe ,simple menu but waffles to die for. we will return
P. J.
Lovely wee cafe. Great coffee and the most amazing vege nachos in Canterbury!
R. L. T.
Great atmosphere and great food & coffee.
Ordered fish & chips for lunch and their fish was fresh.
Good parking and clean toilets.
Y. J. C.
Had the eggs bene and the custard and raspberry muffin. They were so good!!! Nice coffee too!
l. d.
Great cafe to stop in for brunch on your road trip. Loved all the souvenirs too. Great yummy food and very helpful service
T. M.
Came to dine on New Years Day, very busy and the staff handled it with ease. They seemed to have a great system and flow. Tables weren’t dirty for more than a few minutes before being cleared. Coffee was great. Fish and chips was awesome. Well done crew. Thanks for the feed!

Excellent service and lovely tasty meat pies! Highly recommend the Peppered Beef Pie😀
D. S.
We were so pleased to find Taste of Kiwi and really impressed with all they had to offer that we called back in on our way back from Arthur's Pass.
Great coffee and cakes. The sandwiches and food looked amazing too and the selection of Kiwi gifts were a bonus.
There was, deservedly, a steady flow of customers thanks to the great service and typical Kiwi welcome.
Off road parking and toilets make it the perfect pit stop.
Thanks so much.
J. C.
Very friendly and happy staff. Vegan & gluten free lasagna and other goodies in the cabinet. Kitchen closes at 4:30, cafe closes at 5, then they reopen at 6 for fish&chips, but they still serve cabinet foods and drinks in between.
A. “. H.
Great place to chill out for breakfast. Even had lunch options.
S. H.
Just had breakfast here. Hands down the best eggs benny I've ever had! I also had an iced latte, which was great. The staff were friendly and efficient. Overall 10/10 for me. Sadly, my partner didn't like either of the two pies he got.
L. R.
Really nice food and good coffee ☕ plus friendly staff... Their cabinet food looked amazing too 👌
A. H.
Such a good place to enjoy from a good Maple walnut tea & fresh sweets.
Very clean & nice staff
Recommended👌🏼

Visited here on our way to Castle Hill in December 2023. Was packed with a long queue and signs saying staff were doing their best. The coffees and milkshakes were very good, despite the wait. Taste of Kiwi has both indoor and outdoor seating options. Likely the best spot to stop if passing through Springfield.
K. g. w.
Excellent food , excellent staff, i recently visited this place on passing for a spot of lunch.
I had a steak cheeks and tomato pie and my colleague opted for a beef sausage roll , flat whites and a caramel slice.
I have eaten at some of the best and worst cafe places in Canterbury and I have to say this place tops them all.
There is a reason this place was so busy , food quality is unbelievably good and the place is clean tidy and has even a little gift area for souvenirs.
Next time I pass through I will definitely stop and eat here.
Wonderful experience.
Thank you team
S. N.
Went after 2pm so only got food from the caninet. Sandwich is too expensive for the quality. Coffee is okay.
H. L.
The pie was good, but the pumpkin soup wasn't great
E. K.
We stopped in here on our way past for drinks and a sweet treat which were all delicious. Massive shout out to Abbey who helped me out when I left my bag in the toilet 🤦♀️ and didn’t realise until I was a half hour away and they were shut. She answered my call and left my bag in the nearby garage for me to collect, even with a little note! Couldn’t have been more helpful and kind!
A. B.
We just made it before they closed. Cam invited us in and said we have a minute until to order. We enjoyed coffee and some toasties and I was able to take this pic of the donut in Springfield and the Simpsons
A. R.
Great place- the only place- to get breakfast in Springfield.
P. L.
Nice food, sausage roll could have been a little hotter but delicious. Coffees were great, muffin was fresh and delicious. The room temperature could have been just a bit warmer. The least enjoyable thing was the wobbly table.
A. W.
The loveliest staff, let me camp out for a few hours after my car broke down and while I was awaiting a tow truck. Very generous with their butter with my eggs on toast (which was 10/10, especially because I love butter!)
R. J.
Coffee was good. Scones disappointing, bit like a large door stop. Everything else had garlic in it. Not our preferred flavouring.
L. I.
Fully recommendet! Very nice cafe and good seevice and food!
J. L.
Stopped in for a takeaway while on coast to coast and came back 2 days afterwards for breakfast as it was so good! Lovely food, great service.staff were doing a stellar job on takeaways at c2c time as well!!
D. P.
Awesome waffles, good place to stop in, friendly staff and just good vibes all around. Will be returning
L. S.
Really good breakfast and super friendly staff :))
k. r.
What a gem of a place! Highly recommend this gorgeous cafe. Staff were very friendly and helpful, food was expertly cooked (shout to the chef for the perfect poached eggs!) and there was a great little selection of nz gifts inside too. We could have demolished everything in the cabinet, but we ordered off the menu, then took away an afghan which was stunning. Plan a trip now, these guys know what they're doing!
S. J.
12$ 2 reg Cappuccini to go. Very tasty! They also have a cute little shop. Chill athmosphere. Pity they‘re closing at 3 pm - tale away only from 2 pm until 3 pm.
K. Y. L. (.
Whenever we go bouldering at Castle Hills from Christchurch, we make it a point to visit this place. The staff is friendly, and they offer a great selection of pantry foods. They serve perfect soy lattes, and there are also decaf options available
R. A.
Its been a year since we've visited this place, love the new update! Cozy and relaxing😀, a must stop whenever your traversing SH 73!
S. B.
Back here second day running for scrumptious cheese scones and delicious coffee. If you’re in or just passing through Springfield this cafe is a must to visit.
J. R.
Pass many times and missed this gem of a cafe well worth a stop. Coffee and pies
B. R.
Great place to stop for a coffee and a bite to eat on the way to the west coast. It's one of my favourite stops and the coffee is always top notch along with the service
J. 2.
After swearing never to return to this cafe, after the previous Fawlty Towers impersonators and the austere dutch gentleman of old, I took the risk and went here for a coffee and cake with a group of friends after a day in the mountains... I have to say this cafe is now outstanding!! Such lovely hospitable service, delicious coffee and beautiful food! I would now highly recommend this cafe and will look forward to our next visit after this dramatic transformation. True hospitality. Well done new owners!

A Sweet cafe in Springfield and a good place to stop-over during travelling.
There is a public toilet cross the road.
Coffees, drinks & chips were good.
A little souvenir corner in the shop is fun to have a look at it if you are keen to get some NZ local stuff😀
G. C.
Had takeaway coffee today and have to say it was amazing. All Press coffee brand which is just delicious. Cafe was under the pump and could be forgiven if coffee had been sub par. But was amazing, one of the best I’ve had in months actually. Skilfully made, so credit where credits due. Barista today approx 2pm makes amazing coffee!
S.
Delicious food went back to buy something for next day 😋
J. M.
Great place for a stopover in Springfield. We had a lovely coffee, a generous pot of tea and a gluten free cake with yoghurt at a very reasonable price. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere in the cafe was lovely with nice decor and good seating.
T. M.

The soup of the day was delicious! (Pumpkin & Sweet Potato)
Wedges and sour cream was also a delight !
I tried Polenta Fries for the first time, they were nice and crunchy.
Overall i recommend a stop over.
Vegetarian options available
E. T.
Did I leave a green merino jumper here on the 27/11?
G. N.
Nice and atmospheric. Friendly people and great coffee.
T. M. H.
Really nice cafe decor - the takeaway coffee was good but the 'large' size option is quite small and one of the takeaway cups was 3/4 full
K. S.
Great coffee, friendly service, amazing Kumara fries... love it
T. J.
Disappointed. The only vegetarian option on the menu was sold out. Milk was burnt in the coffee. No wi-fi. The pie shop down the road at Sheffield didn't disappoint.
M. A.
The food were all delicious. I had the chicken and waffles and I liked it a lot. Not too pricey, too. I loved that the restaurant has some little knicks and knacks to buy for some souvenirs.
S. B.
This place is the only game in town, and it's worth a stop. The iced chocolate was really nice. They also do a nice breakfast.
R. T.
Stopped for a coffee on my way to the West Coast. Coffee was excellent. Cheese scone also excellent. They have piese and cakes and also do a breakfast menue.
T. C.
Bloody great coffee (Allpress made with a La Marzocco!) and really friendly service, definitely worth dropping past if you’re coming through Springfield
C. W.
Amazing food, had the vege nachos. The coffee was amazing. Everything was really fast and service was spot on.
K.
The food was ok, nothing spectacular but the eggs were overcooked. The staff was friendly but sadly they messed up our order twice.
G. B.
This cafe has a modern fresh look and feel. With plenty of space between to relaxed on either modern couch settings or intimate table settings. Lovely meals. Staff clearly enjoy working there. We will return.
F. U.
Great food at great prices, who can ask for more? Well at this place you actually get more nice comfortable seats friendly service, it looked fresh & clean but had a nice vibe. And then there was the way they had with kids with cool touches like a stamp for the kids hand and toys which were nice and not even broken. This place may have made Springfield a new stop on all our trips west.
G. A.
These guys were super friendly and helpful. The soup and homemade rye toast was amazing. They were really good with our kids too, giving them colouring books and pencils. Will definitely stop here again. Cheers!
F. J.
Hit the spot perfectly. Fine small assortment of lovely meals and snacks
T. F.
Great customer service here. My mother in law was feeling sick so asked if could just have some toast. Quick as a flash it was provided even though not on the menu. This is a far cry from the service of the previous owners. Well done. We will be back.
c. j.
Ok but coukdnt have a,sandwich as all had cheese in them. Person asked kitchen if they could make me one but answer was no. Felt rushed out when chairs being put up around 2.30 although open until 3.
J.
Worth a stop on the way to or from the West Coast. Fish and chips were really good. Coffee is consistently great, All Press coffee. Staff are always very friendly and smiley 😊

Such a beautiful and cozy place to visit everytime we pass by this area. The staff are amazing and oh so friendly especially the owner 😃. The foods are sumptuous: a real taste of kiwi . My wee girl loves the kid's corner so as parents, we get to enjoy our hot delicious roasted coffee ☕ we would always recommend this place to everybody. Worth the visit ! 😉
M. R.
Great food and smoothie and coffee and service. I loved all the classy and funky Kiwi tourist stuff - much better than the usual tacky stuff in shops. A cool cafe.
P. L.
A great place to stop for refreshments. Excellent coffee and food, with friendly and efficient service. Enjoyed it so much on our way to the West Coast that we made a point of also stopping there on the way back.
