Good food, honestly prepared. It is about a 20 minute drive outside of Dunedin cbd in Portobello. A lovely view of the bay. There is outdoor seating for warmer days. A great place for lunch or dinner. A very impressive wine list, also well catered for beer drinkers.

Friendly staffs with great views, the restaurant make their own foods even dessert. I was surprised they provided delicious foods with fair price. Good vibes, I will get back there in the night time very soon.

My wife and I both had the lamb shanks tonight for dinner. It was served with minted pea puree with baby carrots. It was delicious and piping hot and the service has been superb. We followed it with the cheese board to round off a very enjoyable meal.

Superb meal here tonight, everything was fabulous, from their online booking system, wonderful service and absolutely delicious food. Wine great. Would definitely be a repeat customer if we lived here as absolutely loved it.

Staying in Portobello and went in for lunch. I loved my portobello mushrooms and pumpkin on homemade toast. My wife was ok with a mozzarella mushroom toastie. Our friend really enjoyed his chowder. Later on, they were very nice to do a take-away dinner for us, on our plates from the Portobello Motel. Our chickpea and haloumi dish was truly excellent. Our friend raved about her salmon on Moroccan lentils. The panna cotta, and the brownie with salted caramel topping also got raves for dessert.

Absolutely delightful food and a nice, warm place to come into out of what was an awfully wet and cold day. Both my main and my dessert was very tasty with a great complement of flavours. The steak was cooked as requested and wa well presented on the plate. The dishes took longer to arrive than some other restaurants but there is a clear sign indicating that all dishes are prepared as ordered rather than pre-prepared and so will take longer to arrive.

We decided to go here for one of first dining out experiences in Dunedin. The host was lovely and welcoming. We arrived as early as we could so we could still catch some nice views before the sun went down and had a seat beside the fire and ocean view. It was beautiful. Food was great - good size portions. After entree and main I was so full which was perfect because I’m not a dessert fan anyway. So we were completely happy. Also very helpful with lactose intolerance which was great. Can’t wait to come back :)

We called in on Monday. It was great to see a couple of plant-based options on the menu (the soup was vegan) and the chef was happy to tweak a couple of the things to make them vegan. They even popped to the shop to get soy milk for me. The soup was delicious ( not pumpkin - hurrah!) and excellent value. We were made to feel really welcome, and will definitely go back. It's also a beautiful restaurant in a great location. No wonder they were pretty busy on a Monday lunchtime.

We were extremely and pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food we enjoyed at 1908 this evening. I had the venison which was extremely tasty and my wife had the rib-eye, which was cooked exactly as she requested. The place was busy which gave a good vibe, and the 2 waiting staff were doing a marvelous job keeping every table happy. Can wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

Absolutely fantastic! What a pleasant surprise. After ending in some rather mediocre tourists trap eateries during our trip to NZ my boyfriend and I were losing hope. Luckily we fell across the 1908 which was fantastic! The welcome was warm and friendly, the service great and the food exceptional! Really happy to have fallen across this place, definitely a hidden gem!!!

Came here with my family and had a really great time! We were greated by very warm people, sat us in and gave us useful tips of the foods. We ended up sharing our foods among each other. Veal was great, lamb was amazing, chowder was good, and stacked veggies were good as well! Fish tho was not my favorite. Very cozy place, very serene till out family came in. We're a loud bunch! 😂. Definitely recommended!

We had the most beautiful dinner after walking up the Dunedin Cone. The restaurant is in a picturesque location with harbour views. There is a charming fire place. The service was fabulous and the food divine. Thanks for having us!

Very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Staff are efficient and helpful and produce beautiful food and drinks in a timely manner. The views of the harbour from the garden seats is Serene and the inside is warm and classical. Family friendly as with the menu but with a sophisticated edge. Competitively priced. Enjoy.

Everything, absolutely everything was amazing here. Beautiful staff and chef, wonderful view of the water and of course, the food was incredible. We ate through two starters, three mains and a desert (even though at that point we were very full). We planned on just stopping for a quick eat, but were quickly convinced that we had to keep trying our way through the menu. It's worth the beautiful little drive just outside Dunedin too. Wow, we have just had a fabulous, lovingly prepared meal here. Real tastes, real textures, real hospitality in a lovely renovated place that you easily pass by. Good wines too. Venison with rich jus(gravy), salmon with a herb crust and a cracking cheese board. A real find

Caught a bus to Portabello especially to go here and glad I did. The owners are lovely and the restaurant has a great atmosphere. There is a great selection of meals to choose from, and the food was very well presented and delicious 😋

Wow!! What can I say?? We walked into this restaurant tonight and every table was full but one. We thought we were out of luck but no we got a table. And what a meal we had. It was absolutely incredible, the owner was rushing around servicing every table with drinks water appetizers and entrées. We told her to take her time because we were enjoying our wine and we were more than happy to wait for a meal which we did. When our meal came there was no comparison to any other meal we’ve had on the south island.

Very friendly and hospitable establishment. We arrived 20 min before closing and expected some resistance however they were very welcoming and I saw a couple arrive just after they officially closed that were still welcomed in for a meal. Absolutely amazing service. We arrived at 8:10pm and they were about to close at 8:30pm. They welcomed us regardless and offered us amazing conversation and food. At 8:30pm when they just closed, the server looked at us and said “no rush at all” Highly recommend this cosy yet well decorated restaurant.

Incredible. Simply marvelous. Not sure which is more lovely, the people or the food. So warm and friendly. We had a phenomenal “vegetable stack” (which consisted of primarily portobello and some amazing flavors). Also the chicken wrapped in bacon. I mean, come on. My GF is GF and they were perfect in their handling and their knowledge of the food. Would give 10 stars if I could.

Wonderful place. Old building with delightful attention to detail when it was renovated. The hostess was lovely and the chef brilliant. On a round the world trip this was the best meal and ambience we experienced anywhere!

A friend from San Luis Obispo, California, recommended this restaurant to us before we left for our trip to NZ this April. So we stopped for lunch - the soup of the day was Minted Pea, which I had never had. It was one of the best soups I have ever had, and I do love good soup. Then, after seeing the Penguins and the Royal Albatross, we stopped back in for dinner-which was over the top fabulous- as was the dessert of the day.So,if you are looking for a unique memorable place to celebrate something special, or just any day, this is the place to go. Excellent service, wonderful ambiance including a nice fire in he fireplace the day we were there, friendly and efficient help, and the best ever meal for prices that were reasonable for the quality of the meal we were served. We came here for lunch on our way out from Dunedin to the Otago Peninsula. Even though we came in fall, it was still sunny so we were lucky enough to be seated outside in the sun. Service was very friendly even though we waited a quite a bit for our food - apparently a larger group had arrived shortly before us.

Wonderful experience at 1908. Very nice and attentive staff. Since we came with children they anticipated many special needs and WE felt very welcome. The food ist delicious and freshly made to order so you can ask for changes. In times of convenience food a very welcome feature.
