Delicious food, helpful staff and a fantastic spot for any time of the day. One of my favorite places in Dunedin. Would highly recommend them.

One of the best places in town when it comes to views with a coffee or a vino. We go there whenever we want a lift in our moods. Walk on the beach, see happy dogs and then sit inside or outside on a table in this legendary restaurant. Great service and food that is not pretentious but yumm and authentic. Love you team. Quick lunch stop with our friends from Auckland. They loved it, we love it anyway. Arancinis were delicately flavored with saffron and in thick tomato sauce and fresh grated parmesen cheese. Pizza in fresh baked base was delicious as well. Vino and coffee as per their usual high standards. Service was prompt with smiles. An absolute gem in sunny dunners. A wee stroll on the beach was a perfect finish to our afternoon.

Fast Service ! Servers were very efficient. We came in at busy time and they were so good at multi tasking. Felt like they had mind connection to each other. You would never see them standing around doing nothing. Smiling is the best customer service. Keep it up ! No need to comment on the food they have the reputation already :)

On our first visit to Dunedin 4 years ago, we stopped by the esplanade not knowing where exactly to eat. It's been 4 years in the country and being Italian-Canadian I refuse to eat pizza that is not authentically Italian. I decided to give this place a go for the the wood oven experience, double 00 flour i've seen sitting around the restaurant, and the imported tomato sauce also visible within shop. It was the best pizza i've had since Nonna's pizza back home in Canada. we've tried the calamari fritti, the tiramisu, the pesto calzone, a few of the pasta options, lasagna, and we always, always, always get the pizza. We always leave The Esplanade happy, satisfied with the food, the chefs, the service, and the beautiful aura of the atmosphere. We had a JiuJitsu tournament in Dunedin/Mosgiel not long ago, so I made sure the team and I made it over there after for a nice celebratory dinner! We usually end off our meal with a coffee (and sometimes dessert if we are not too full). The beans are perfectly roasted already, and the coffee never burnt or left with a bitter taste. Thank you for always getting my cappuccino with cinnamon on top correct. Very hard to find barista's that can actually decipher the difference between a latte and cappuccino. Gracie Mille!

Great pizza. Usually come here for special occasions. Wouldn't come here for the pasta personally. Staff are friendly. Warm, and rustic atmosphere.

Nice little restaurant, right by the sea. Good service but my meal was a little disappointing. Ordered the seafood pizza and honestly if I didn't know what I'd ordered I would have never known it was seafood as the topping was so frugal. Nothing like the old days of the pizza-hut marinara seafood pizza. However the base was delicious and so was the pizza sauce.

Nice spot with a spectacular sea view, lively environment. We went there in a group of 6 and ordered a variety of foods. Everyone was satisfied with the food quality and rated it either 'good' or 'excellent'. Service was good and timely and stuff were friendly.

The food was excellent, however, on a Saturday night, probably not worth the long wait. If you've got the time and it's a warm evening, however, grab a glass of something and enjoy the St. Clair sunset.

Probably one of the the best Italian restaurants I've ever been to. Top tip on the weekend would be to either go late or early. We went kind of bang on 7pm on a Saturday night and had to wait 45 mins. Lucky it was a nice night so we went for a walk up the beach. The service is very efficient. We tried the baked cheese and aranccini to start which were delicious. The baked cheese was more than enough for the 3 of us. For mains we got the lamb ragu pasta, lasagne and the pork sausage with the shell pasta (can't remember what it was called). All were delicious but the lamb was the winner. By the time we sat down and ordered it had cleared out a lot just after 8pm. Highly reccomended for a destination dinner in Dunners.

This is a very complicated close up photo I took of inside this restaurant around the corner with the main beach views from where I sat before having lunch for the first time with Trixie Vosseler the driver and support worker I really enjoyed one half each of salmon flavoured pizza, a bowl of chips, and a filled water glass from one table after a walk along the track to the second beach walk via Esplanade. Then I got a ride back home after an excursion in the urban city area.

Amazing restaurant highly recommend. Amazing food and service. Well priced for the quality of food! You cannot book so it does sometimes pay to go in a little early than busy times. The woodfire pizza is fantastic as is the pasta dishes. Also great for a coffee or wee cocktail.

We loved the pizzas & the vibe. It was super cozy, perfect for some food & wine. We saw cannoli on the dessert menu -- my all time Italian favourite. We rarely order a dessert but since the food was good we decided to give it a go. Unfortunately, they didn't deliver. The cannolo was super small and pretty bland to be honest. Lost a star for that, sorry.

Brunch here is seriously under rated. If you’ve had an amazing dinner here like I have multiple times, the brunch is just as good. A nice refuge from a stormy windy day with a fireplace. Italian influences breakfast dishes are much more interesting than the boring food you find at most other Dunedin restaurants

The Esplanade is in my top3 restaurant of Dunedin. Its only drawback is that it is not a restaurant in my perspective but "just a pizzeria", otherwise I love to go there. The place looks good, waiters are nice and professional (most of them are Italian), it is clean, the view on the ocean is great, but above all their pizza are, from far, the best pizzas in Dunedin, specially if you are looking for European taste. The dough is really thin, it is nice and subtile, with delicate flavours. I also tried some antipasti, the clams were absolutely perfectly cooked. To sum up it is an amazing place to go chill after a walk on the beach with one of the best quality food in Dunedin.

Nice, cozy restaurant. Excellent service. The staff were so amazing. We had a birthday lunch, the staff were very accommodating, even got a wee little candle for the slice of dark choc cake. Thank you for making it special for my birthday girl. For the food. The pizza 'Frutti di mare' was really good. But the 'Reginette zafferano' pasta with mussels and clams, was way too bitter. It must be the sauce or from the mussels, but the pasta dish gave a bitter after-taste. Other than that, really enjoyable evening. Thank you. Will visit again. 👍

Service initially friendly and helpful but as it became busier couldn't attract anyone over for ages to take dirty plates away and order more food drinks. Pasta was dry and hard in places. Sauce was non-existent and the few scallops were over cooked. Not the best meal I've had but the setting lovely. However that doesn't fill you when you're hungry. Would like to return to try pizzas as they looked great.

We visited at lunchtime on an overcast Sunday and had a great time. I had sardines on bruschetta and a caprese salad, which were not only individually delicious but they also complemented each other nicely. My wife's gnocchi were pillow-like and served with a delightful sauce, while my grandmother's meatballs were super tasty and well complimented by a well-balanced tomato sauce. The service was also excellent, and our food arrived promptly. A great spot, with nice seaside walking opportunities right outside the door.

Stopped by for a mid-afternoon Sunday pizza and beer. The pizza is done in a brick oven and absolutely fantastic, even if it did feel a ~little~ on the pricey side for the size (24, 25 dollars a pie). Beer selection felt a little scant, surprisingly, but maybe we were just too hasty to settle on a pitcher of Emerson’s 1812 for a reasonable $20. Vegans: I did visit a year or two ago and we managed a decent vegan meal, but I remember it feeling a little constrained (like most restaurants tbh), but it’s good food. Pictured: The four cheese,* which includes gorgonzola but no ricotta for a different, but •very• satisfying take on the classic. *Which of course goes by some Italian name on the menu — though that’s no gimmick to fancy up the joint: much of the staff is Italian and the maître d’ was happy to converse it with the couple next to us.

Fabulous all day resturant, we truly battled to find a drink and something to eat in Dunedin on a Monday at 3.30 we googled and googled and fell upon Esplanade, we would go everyday if only we had known about it and the St Clair area, nothing impressed us us in the City of Dunedin, commercial eating and very student oriented and disappointing, but Esplanade resturant and the area of St Clair was totally different with a top notch owner who never misses a beat.

The manager is amazing and many others could take a leaf out of his book 📖😀 polite, friendly, welcoming and exceptional flexible. Food is way past amazing, you will come away full, satisfied and happy. The Food is flavorful, tasty and delicious A variety of foods to suit your tastes and family needs 😋❤ They even made my Lactose free milk hot cocoa ~ ingredients supplied by me, however they happily made it ~ with a smile and charged nothing. Absolutely go to Esplanade for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Amazingly staff members.

The location is truly stunning, right beside St Clair beach. This makes it very convenient- if you are going on a beach walk and want a bite to eat afterwards, this is the place for you. The staff are wonderfully friendly in my experience which really takes it up a notch in enjoyment factor. As for the food, I find they do main meals very well and their chips are divine. Their drinks menu could do with a little improvement though- I ordered the Whittaker's milkshake (as shown in picture) because I'd heard it was good, but it was underwhelming and quite expensive. Their desserts are also quite overpriced.

A glorious and very authentic Italian restaurant. The simple salads (one was basically different types of tomatoes, lumps of mozzarella, a couple of leaves liberally drowned in olive oil). The seafood pizza was great, thin base with outrageously solid crust around the outside. Working on sampling their breakfast right now, the baking is excellent too.

Went this morning for brunch, blown away with the service. Was my husband's birthday so when they brought out the doughnut he ordered they had placed a candle in it and sang happy birthday alongside us. Had a late lunch here today. It's my new favorite place in Dunedin! Loved it! Delicious (fennel sausage, truffle oil, mushroom) pizza from the pizza oven, lovely tasty green mint iced tea. My companion enjoyed the beer choices. Many tables look out onto the ocean a mere 20 metres away. Or you can enjoy the wood fire. Loved the atmosphere. Pleasant waitstaff. Not pretentious but not overly "she'll be right"ish. Easy, free parking. Even the "restroom" was superior. Highly recommend.

One of Dunedin's absolute gems. Not only is it in a beautiful spot, the food is absolutely top notch and reasonably priced. Excellent vegan options on request. Went here for Breakfast. This is a nice venue. Great location. Sea view. The breakfast menu is a bit alternative. I ordered the “esplanade breakfast “. If they put the same effort into the meal that they have put into over describing the menu it would have been good. Instead of bacon the meal included prosciutto. I thought about getting bacon as a side as well but thought they would probably do a good job without it. The extras menu had ham as well. When the “esplanade breakfast” arrived it was very small. The eggs had been cooked without any love and the “prosciutto “ was cheap ham from the supermarket. Very disappointing. I’m not usually one to moan but this was very over rated.

Very busy and too many tables crammed into a small area. This impacted on the service but not too much. Food and wine good although my anchovy and caper pizza was too salty for me due to over generosity with adding same to pizza. Good selection on the drinks list; husband tried a West Coast beer and loved it. Great for a group but not for an intimate meal - I was closer to the woman at the table next to me than I was to my husband. Even as packed as it was we easily got a table (they don't take bookings) and didn't wait too long for food.

Can't say enough about the staff, they are awesome! And the food is delicious, especially the pizza. Add the great location and it's perfection. Great for a meal, or just to stop in for a drink or a coffee. We are very lucky to have this place in our neighbourhood!

Very good pizzas. The service was a bit disappointing - after receiving our food noone came back to check if we needed more drinks, and the wait until someone came to ask if we wanted dessert was just too long. It wasn't a very busy night. That was my first time there, the regulars I went with reassured me it was unusual though.

The service is always outstanding whether it is over the phone or face to face. The pizza choices are not only wide but also unique and the ingredients used are always on point. If you don't eat the crust on your typical pizza then trust me, these may change your mind. Furthermore the rest of the menu and selection of drinks covers all types of palettes and satisfies any hunger or appetite. Whether you are on a date or simply out with family for lunch/dinner there is no restaurant next to the beach quite like it.

This restaurant have the best pizza in Dunedin. The service is excellent and the ambience of the place with the roaring fireplace is most welcome on a cold winter's night. We were all very happy eating and having a good conversation. The place is always full and there is no reservation. First come first serve.

Wonderful place ! On the St Clair waterfront, with a very nice view on the waves and St Clair beach, we went three times at Esplanade. Always a pleasure. Very kind and friendly staff, there is a « private » room, where you can sit 20 persons. Perfect for birthday and private function. Food is very fresh and you have a large choice of authentic Italian special meals ! Buenissimo !

We were a group of 9 and turned up late and the joint was still jumping. I had a delicious pasta and pork dish. Loved the stock that was used. One of our group received her pizza after most of us were finished. I was uncomfortable with eating in front of her so pointed out her situation and asked how they could compensate her. In the end she didn't pay for the meal. Mistakes happen, it's nice to have things acknowledged. 'Sorry' is not enough.

It was my first time tasting pasta like this so maybe that can be put down to personal taste, but the boiled meat, watery sauce, and sour aftertaste didn't leave me wanting more. I've had plenty of Margherita pizzas before though, and I was pretty disappointed. It had a soggy base and the tomato sauce tasted like someone had drained a can of Watties Spaghetti and topped it with cheese and too much oil. If the food didn't cost so much then maybe I wouldn't be as let down. Cost a combined $48 excluding drinks. Probably won't be coming back here for dinner. Would still recommend if you want a few drinks and nibbles though. Coffee was pretty great also.

I shared the prosciutto pizza (crudo di parma, rocket, mozzarella) with my eight year old daughter. It was outstanding! The service was also quite good. Esplanade would have received five stars had there not been an instance in the kitchen that skeeved me out. I watched the chef make the pizza through the open kitchen. I watched the chef place the prosciutto on the finished baked pizza. He ate the last bit of prosciutto himself and to my dismay proceeded to place the rocket on the pizza before washing his hands. We live just around the corner so I plan to come back because the food was that good, but I will be a bit more careful to avoid ordering something as tempting as prosciutto in the future.

I’m giving this restaurant five stars because of the following: I was at The Esplanade for late lunch after driving from Oamaru to Dunedin to go to a concert in the evening when to my horror I realised I had left the printed tickets at home. I only had the email which instructed that the tickets must be printed. My friend, to my embarrassment, took the initiative to ask the manager if he had a printer. But he was SO obliging; kindly allowed me to forward the email to him, mistakenly printed the wrong thing but then went back to his office and then printed off the correct tickets. All of this during a reasonably busy time in the restaurant and with smiling goodwill. Food was fine, good wine, great situation, excellent service by all staff. But most of all my vote for the restaurant manager of the year goes to the lovely Italian man who made it possible for my friend and I to see Stevie Nicks without a hassle at the gate!
