Reviews of Glenfalloch Gardens Cafe & Restaurant
A.
Fantastic food in a fantastic setting! The service was prompt and friendly and the coffee was really good! We came on a quiet lunchtime as the weather wasn't great, but I cannot falt it! I've only given four starts due to a bizarre atmosphere created by the strange choice of music - 80s pub hits meet Jump Jams, which I thought was quite bizarre for the picturesque garden setting.
N.
This place is fancy and the view is also nice. So sad that it was raining that day but they were still busy. Veggies i believed were freshly served. We’ll definitely recommend this to our friends, we are from Auckland.
C.
For adults this place is great, for kids not so much. No kids menu at all, and main menu didn't have a lot that kids would want to eat. Staff were friendly and it was a great experience overall but won't go there again with kids
R.
Amazing environment and excellent quality foods plus brilliant service. We had Trust the chief 3 course for our first visit, unforgettable juicy lamb which definitely surprised us. Love those warm wait staffs, chiefs and beautiful environment!

What can one say about a place of such natural beauty. Wander quietly through the magnificent gardens ♥ peaceful, warm, views over the harbour and a sense of relaxation 😌. I was there on a warm Spring day and found a seat in the shade to enjoy a hot cocoa drink. Trust me I wanted to sit all afternoon on the gardens, listening to the native birds 🐦 Take the time to make the trip to this historic hidden gem.

We recently had our wedding at Glenfalloch Gardens followed by the reception at the lovely restaurant.
We cannot speak highly enough of Melanie and the team at Glenfalloch Gardens who made our day so very special.
We planned the majority of the wedding from Australia, and were worried about the smaller details and our ability to execute the tasks we needed to, to make our day just right. Melanie was always reassuring, offering suggestions, ready to support us and guide us through the process.
We knew we always wanted an outdoor wedding and although there was a small amount of rain on our day, the team at Glenfalloch quickly ensured all our guests were dry with large umbrellas and that our onsite marques was equipped with heaters to keep everyone toasty and warm.
They kindly set up our decor to make the reception venue a picture of perfection, and better than we had imagined it.
The food was excellent. As vegetarians, we knew the restaurants reputation to deliver and were excited to try the dishes on hand. Many of our guests commented on how delicious their meal was.
Melanie and the team always went above and beyond to make sure all the details were covered, and to ensure our day ran smoothly. We appreciated how often they checked in on us and our family and friends to ensure everyone was having a good time.
Thank you for a wonderful experience! Would strongly recommend Glenfalloch Gardens/Restaurant and their outstanding staff!

Came here for Christmas Lunch. I’m not sure I’m one to review fancy meals but they all looked amazing and the meat was perfect. The grounds were also lovely but I did not get a chance to have a proper look around. They were very tidy and I look forward to coming back at some stage to see the rest. Definitely worthwhile stopping by for a visit.
C.
Delicious foods and immaculately presented. Overall great dining experience in a beautiful garden setting.
B.
Came here on Wednesday 1st Dec. 7 of us for our Christmas Lunch . Delicious All our meals where lovely. A well thought out lunch menu.Well Presented.Lovely waitress Great company Thanks Glenfalloch
B.
Was planning to have afternoon tea at the restaurant but they were closed so ended up walking around the gardens instead.
Take some time to study the map in the entrance arch so you get an idea of where to go and how large this place actually is. We can in as a tour group was leaving so we missed it.
We walked along the path and ended up going up and up. There were signs that the upper gardens weren't maintained at the moment but decided to go for an adventure anyway. I thought it was quite an enjoyable bush walk. Once on the paved path, it was easy enough to get around with the signs to the exit.
It is a bit hard to get to without a car but it was a really nice place for a stroll.
J.
Great hospitality and great food. Slightly disappointed by the coffee as it tasted a bit bitter and felt like my cappuccino foam was made like a macchiato. That's the only reason this isn't a five star review. Highly recommend this place. Stunning views.
K.
The staff were so amazing! It was my partners birthday today, I asked if it was possible to bring in a cake and have them bring it out as a suprise for after our meal. They had absolutely zero qualms and even mentioned that they had candles they could put on it. Then, I threw the young gentleman under the bus with another request...could he sing happy birthday. Well, when they came out with the cake. The lovely young lady sang happy birthday, and asked the other diners to join in. Such a. Lovely experience Not to mention the food was amazing and the coffee was fantastic! Perfect experience, thank you guys!!!!
T.
Disappointing that most places in Dunedin closed Monday to Wednesdays, however these gardens you could still walk around, the cafe was closed. Fabulous, beautiful old gardens, would have loved to see more plants and trees with their names up and a map, but the age of some of the trees must be significant, the old homestead looked a little sad and in need of care from the outside.
J.
Service impeccable, tho it was busy. Both main meals outstanding then very good desets. Lovely surrounds!
S.
Beautiful gardens, lovely staff and great food. I felt very welcome.
K.
The service was very good, atmosphere is relaxed and calm. The food is delicious and so tasty. So good I've added a picture 😊
M.
Our five course trust the chef menu was beyond compare.
We went in with high expectations which were certainly met and exceeded. Everything was skilfully, thoughtfully, and beautifully prepared. An excellent showcase of seasonal produce.
Service was excellent too.
Definitely will return and recommend to others.
S.
Always feel good coming here. Great setting, friendly staff and delicious food.
P.
Stunning surroundings. Coffee & excellent food. Outdoor seating.
N.
This place is a must go when you are in Dunedin. It's a lovely restaurant surrounded by beautiful gardens. We stopped here for lunch and we were impressed by the creative dishes we could chose. Don't forget to order one of the gorgeous desserts. Prices are very fair and the quality of the food ist amazing.
D.
Good walks, relaxing but you need to phone first if you would like to visit the cafe due to events.
A.
Food was fantastic and hubby was very impressed with the coffee. Pictured is the pork and prawn frittata
S.
Great as always, free easy to access car park. Tracks are well maintained and easy to use.
S.
Lovely service, great surroundings. Kids loved the waffles, the coffee was great!
M.
The place is so amazing. There's a trail walks but needs maintenance. It become bushy already. It says there's a falls but we didn't find it. A guy said, it's hard to find coz it's little water only at the moment.
Restaurant needs reservation but they cater take away like drinks.
Overall, I love the place. Quiet and very close to nature.
J.
Nice and balance meal. Staffs are really nice. Went there for lunch.
J.
Great place to visit and walk the grounds even in winter, great colours. The tracks are a bit confusing to locate the sights but we’ll worth the effort. The 1000yr old Matai tree is majestic.. also a great cafe.
V.
Glenfalloch restaurant is set in a gorgeous garden on stunning Otago Peninsula. Excellent sitting area with superb service and experience. I had this gorgeous garden entirely to myself on a sunny mid week day. The Rhododendrons were at their peak and the under plantings of blue bells etc only just past peak. Sadly the cafe is closed but will hopefully reopen soon.
K.
Beautiful gardens. Great place for kids to run around and then have some quiet play with the great toy area while you have a coffee
J.
Our bus load of older residents from Caversham had a superb experience with you today thanks. The venue is comfortable and attractive, and the food provided was top quality and delicious. We all appreciated the friendly service and smiles from people at work. Many thanks for adding more enjoyment to a happy outing for many people. 👍💐👌
C.
Lovely brunch, lovely coffee by Common Ground roasters Dunedin. So good I had to go and buy their Grunty beans. Staff were great and the bacon...best I've eaten!
M.
My family and I attended an Awesome wedding in the weekend. Awesome food & customer service in beautiful surroundings.
G.
Absolutely love going here for a breakfast or lunch, or just coffee and a slice. The food is amazing and so are the staff, oh and I haven't mentioned the beautiful gardens and views!
Such a find for us. Absolute 5 stars!
P.
Great site for a beautiful restaurant and cafe. Book first to avoid being turned away
K.
Love having afternoon tea there, sitting outside on the new deck area admiring the beautiful gardens. Highly recommend a visit. Outstanding food too.
S.
We booked Glenfalloch for a small seminar in the lower chalet close to the restaurant.
Absolutely perfect with loads of parking and a devine setting:-)
We included a morning brunch as well as a restaurant lunch after our seminar at the restaurant, how can the food be that good and so pretty to look at?!
Will definitely will be booking again and next time enjoy the beautiful gardens also! 10 out of 10 service by the friendly efficient staff and venue 😊
T.
We ordered Trust the Chef 5-course menu for our half-year anniversary. Attentive service, great food. Every single dish oozes culinary brilliance. They did a great job merging food, service & atmosphere to create a mind-blowing dining experience. We were impressed, will definitely go back again. We had a very good experience at Glenfalloch restaurant, the food was excellent and the view from the terrace was amazing! We highly recommend this place!
M.
Stunning in November best free thing around in Dunedin well worth a koha though
J.
Lovely family lunch to finish off the holidays before going back to work 🍜☕
L.
Beautiful setting. Attended a high tea which was super yummy and very affordable. Friendly attentive staff.
S.
Fabulous food and staff. couldn't do any better.
B.
Glenfalloch is a great place to wander around and explore, even though it never really changes a lot. As for the cafe, I've only ever had a drink and piece of cake from there, so can't comment on the other food, but it's always quite busy.
J.
We had our workplace function at Glenfalloch today. Fantastic food and beautifully presented. I would definitely recommend as this was one of the nicest christmas meals to date.
M.
The food and service is excellent. We attended a wedding recently and was very impressed. The food is the best we have tasted in Dunedin. The buffet was fresh, delicious, well balanced and warm. The staff was professional, hardworking and efficient we didn't have to wait for our food for a long time. The ambience was romantic and the table setting beautifully done.
B.
Amazing food, a visual and taste sensation. Such a wonderful team here at Glenfalloch Restaurant.
(The above review was from February when Haan & Mel were owners.
I have yet to return to Glenfalloch under the current new management so my review is somewhat dated now.)
Hope to visit in the New Year and check out the new team.
R.
My family had said how good it was and WOW, it really was. The food was exceptional, the flavours just exquisite. All the dishes were explained. They catered for my allergies with no fuss. They made my birthday special.
Е.
Gardens are very beautiful and pieceful. Restaurant is definetly worth a dinner
C.
What an amazing restaurant, Had 3 courses but the merino lamb with different textures was the standout - here I was thinking merino = wool only. The chef is highly creative and it is the best of Dunedin fine dining. I highly recommend this place, well worth the drive from out of town. I came here during the night, so can only imagine how amazing this place would be during the day.
S.
Beautiful food and surroundings with excellent service. Fabulous setting for a special occasion.
S.
You cannot go past Dunedin without stopping at this restaurant. We went at night for the five course chef's special. The chef has a very creative flare and has mixed together a wild range of flavours to make extremely unique and interesting dishes. Would recommend not driving since they also have a wine course to go with the meals as an extra. Very highly recommended.
J.
Wow, fabulous lunch today.Amazing food, beautifully presented and staff were knowledgable and attentive Stunning gardens and beautiful location. So great to have it up and running again. Thanks
F.
Beautiful gardens. Very tasty bbq (the pork belly literally melted in your mouth).
L.
Great food, great atmosphere, great service. We were only in Dunedin for a day, and we were glad we picked this restaurant; the food was delicious and beautifully presented like an upscale restaurant, but the price is very reasonable. We made a reservation online and were seated right next to the window with a gorgeous view. Very pleasant experience.
B.
Christmas lunch at Glenfalloch was divine. Every dish was presented beautifully and every mouthful was a taste sensation.
And thats not all
- the staff were dressed befitting the happy occasion and the service was excellent. Just loved everything!
J.
Had our wedding here and chose the cold canape and bbq buffet option. Quite simply the food was brilliant. A lot of guests made positive comments about the beef brisket, the salads were really tasty and plentiful. Pork belly was tender and smoky. The staff and owners are really nice and professional as well. Nice intimate venue in beautiful garden setting.
D.
Restaurant is closed at the moment. As a child I remember this place for the peacocks which are no longer there. However for a free wander around even in winter it's pretty with all it's flora and fauna. Fantail sculpture is a cute addition.
M.
Lovely place. Go there! Have the salmon for lunch then enjoy a walk around the gardens.
G.
Such a delightful place. Modern decor. Food to match. Awesome gardens to look out on or wander through. Recommended. Will def be back.
T.
My parents asked me to submit a glowing review on their behalf. They are older folk and were thrilled with their lunch experience. The staff they said are so helpful and even went the extra mile to make iced coffees even though they aren’t on the menu. Thank you Glenfalloch - I certainly look forward to dining at your restaurant soon.
A.
Exceptional quality food and service from New German chef and family. The menu is a bit limited though especially for a vegetarian and it would be good if they had more low cost options. Great setting in the gardens and the deck is nice on a sunny day. Excellent venue for gatherings
F.
Very good food, and well presented. Service friendly. The quantity of wine when you did the wine pairing was less than I hoped for. 5 different glasses, but probably about only 80 ml each.
D.
And yet another "Trust the chef menu" surprise last night. This is our second visit and the food was divine. All 5 courses were superb. The dessert was the perfect finish to our meal. That rich chocolatey mousse and rhubarb sorbet was SMASHING!
L.
One of the best meals we've had in Dunedin. We had the 5 course trust the chef and asked for a wine match. Every course was a surprise as was the wine both beautifully matched. Beautiful food great wine a must do. Thank you so much
G.
Went here for dinner as a party of three. They do a "trust the chef" menu, which is essentially a degustation/tasting menu. It was superb. At the beginning we were asked if we had any special allergies or sensitivities. My partner said she is vegetarian, which the wait staff quipped was a type of allergy. Despite this unintentionally unenlightened comment, I was surprised that the vegetarian option wasn't just a thoughtless switch out, but very well balanced, and possibly better than the default option.
It's a nice space too. We went during deep winter, so it was dark and rainy outside. We were seated by a window, and despite the fire in the middle, it was apparently a little chilly so be prepared for that. The bulk of the crowd was there for an eightieth birthday party. This was a blessing, as it can feel awkward to dine in a restaurant with too few other patrons. Being an eightieth, it was also relatively subdued. On a clear and warm summer evening, it's must be nice to see the garden outside, but I bet it's busy.
I hope to go back sometime in summer. I'll brave the disdain, and ask the for vegetarian option.
H.
18 for dinner at Glenfalloch to celebrate 3 new graduates!! A doctor, a lawyer and a teacher. We had the degustation chef's choice dinner - this was simply divine!!!! Beautiful food presented artfully, wonderful service. Best dinner in NZ! Can't wait to go back!
J.
Fantastic location beautiful surroundings and delicious food ..and nice friendly staff
R.
Fantastic location, and perfectly kept gardens and modern restaurant with fantastic food.
We got married here and as a wedding venue cannot fault the staff and venue in terms of helpfulness and professionalism. They took care of everything and were quick to assist in moving the wedding inside last minute when it began to rain.
Definitely recommend Glenfalloch over others!
G.
Great meal which was delicious, not too pricey, and didn't take too long at all to get to us. The service was welcoming and friendly, making sure we enjoyed the meal without being intrusive.
s.
I have visited here many times. I highly recommend this venue for fine dinning, a wedding or even just a walk in the well maintained gardens with a coffee. The walks always have something different when I visit.
B.
The gardens are, well, idiosyncratic. A lot of the paths are overgrown now and the signage is poor. Took ages to find the 1,000 year old Matei tree. This place is very very different to Dunedin botanic gardens. Come here to see trees and ferns and get lost in a wilderness of undergrowth!
We only had coffees and ice-creams at the cafe but both were delicious. Lovely tranquil area to sit outside.
L.
Lovely setting. Gardens very well kept. Great coffee and caramel slice. Staff very friendly and efficient.
c.
Super delicious food and one of the best views. Nice garden to discover.
C.
Just home from dinner. 5 courses 'trust the chef'. Amazing! I love good food and this is easily the best food I've ever eaten. Perfectly timed, incredible food and outstanding service. Don't know why it's taken us so long to get there... We'll be back, probably soon :-)
R.
I can't believe I haven't been here before! I took some family portraits here and the gardens were perfect for this. Lots of parking close to the gardens and restaurant. You could spend a few hours here walking all the tracks.
D.
Went to the lights evening very beautiful
A.
Meal was perfect waitress was really great only down fall when we finished our meal waitress came and asked if we would like a hot drink which we declined but was commenting to her what a great meal and service when another waitress came and told her they had finished and she didn't need to talk to us put a complete damper on the night. And probably put me off going back ??
C.
Wow the food was amazing! Perfectly cooked, well presented and lovely service. The 5 course meal was excellent value for money. One of the best meals I have had.
C.
The gardens were beautiful for the time of the year but would be outstanding in spring. Afew paths were blocked for maintenance. Excellent meal at the restaurant which lovely bright and fresh.
D.
Went to Glenfalloch today again!!!So good we can't stay away.Amazing food, great staff.Presentation of food awesome.👍
R.
Waitress brought out wrong beer, food was served slowly and stagnated. Tasted good and looked fancy.

M.

M.
Fantastic experience with two courses for 40NZD.
LOCATION: perched in a beautiful garden in the Portobello district, 20-30 mins drive from the albatross centre, 10-15 from Dunedin city centre, ideal for those who are coming back
F&B: great quality food.
J.
Order a take away coffee before strolling through the park. Took a little longer than normal and the staff could not find a lid that fit the cup. Coffee was good and was hot.
T.
Warm cinnamon brioche and fantastic choc caramel hazelnut slice. Greeted with a smile; well done Glenfalloch!
J.
Beautiful gardens and event area. Great for weddings or just to wander around. Well maintained and decorative. Coffee and meals available at certain times.

D.
This place is fantastic with outstanding food. The staff are extremely pleasant and it feels like they are happy to have people to wait on or assist however they can.
J.
The landscape is beautiful but the paths does not connect very well. Maybe it's the time of the year (5th Oct 2017), many flowers were wilted and weeds was evident.
j.
Compliments to the chef as our lunch was perfect. Beautiful setting.
G.

Beautiful gardens. Didn't really test out the cafe
B.
Beautiful surroundings and idylic lunch spot however I was disappointed in the food selection - very pretentious - obviously aiming at the high end of the market - too fancy for the average person - I went home hungry

Most people overlook this beautiful National Garden of New Zealand. If you're exploring the Peninsula, this should be your first stop.
S.
The garden was open for viewing but the day's weather wasn't totally conducive to see it's best. Still worth a look.
R.
Absolutely fabulous food. Excellent service and incredible value for money.
D.
If proprietor would smile once in a while to create the effect that she's happy to have you would've helped this three stars move to four or maybe even five! 😕
L.

(Translated) You get real value for money here. The food is delicious, the service is good and the pregnancy was taken into account. We have taken a 3-course menu. First tasty salmon, then Merino sheep and a delicious surprising dessert.
A point of attention to view the opening times of the restaurant in advance. They are only open for 3 days.
Furthermore, nothing negative to report.

S.
(Translated) Wonderful food in a very nice ambience (many windows with a view of the beautiful gardens all around) for a very fair price! Very nice, professional service! We would happily eat there again at any time.

(Translated) Nice and cozy the coffee.
