Reviews of The Hard Antler
T.
Booked in for dinner , had a drink . I had a sea food basket, my wife had a Crispy Salmon .
Both were cooked to perfection. Very large meals so yes, doggy bags please. Loads table's outside and in . Dog friendly must be on a leash . Heaps of character throughout and clean toilets . The wait for our meal i thought a bit to long . But all-in -all was great.
J.
None of the staff wear covid masks which was a bit scary and one of the cooks was bragging of no vaccinations.
Good food and good beer - food portions are humongous and very tasty.
In the middle of nowhere - how do they do it?
s.
One stop to refresh/ refuel/ make memories on your way.
Sumptuous food, Warm location(though the deer skulls feel bit aged western-not so apt while the globe is warming up)
j.
This restaurant/cafe/bar is full of character and genuinely friendly staff. It's not called the Hard Antler for nothing...they have an outstanding display of antlers. I highly recommend the savoury scones. Probably busy at night as not much else in little Haast. Pool tables and duke box would be sure to help make your own fun. Good menu & excellent selection of wines etc. I loved the tables made from slabs & trunks of large trees nicely made. It was very busy when we were there at 11am (I take photos when people move out of the way to respect their privacy). The BIG breakfast looked pretty good!
n.
Nice and quiet great food for me but not so much for my mum who's gluten free. The staff seemed to be really friendly and welcoming and it would be awesome to see it at night when they have a band
R.
Good food, wonderful food, excellent food!!
We ordered the venison casserole and pork ribs, both really good.
The portions of the meals were prefect to make us full.
Friendly staffs, good location, what a lovely place.
K.
I read the review before coming here, but that didn't really prepare me for actually being here. It was perfect to say the least. Food, service, atmosphere etc all perfect. All i can say is you have to go here.
J.
We weren't starving so I had salad with vege patties, just delicious. My husband enjoyed venision nachoes, couldn't eat them all. Looking at the other meals that passed our table it is obvious that there is no good reason to go home hungry from the Hard Antler! Highly recommend.
P.
Good food and beverage served by friendly and welcoming staff - great lively spot to stop and refuel on the drive from or to the west coast.
It is a hunters paradise with lots of antlers on display (as you would expect)
The meals are good pub style meals and are made with care and can be enjoyed while you play darts or pool or just gathering around the large wooden tables.
J.
In the little town of Haast there are but a couple of cafes. This is a great place to stretch and grub during a road trip. The cafe is pub style with a pool table and plenty of seating. The food was quickly delivered, tasted great and the portions were huge. Friendly service.
G.
Loved this place! My husband and I called in for brunch on our way up the West Coast. The meals were excellent. Super friendly and chatty staff. The pub itself was loaded with character and atmosphere. We enjoyed it so much we stayed longer than planned. It was great to be able to have our dog join us in the outdoor area.
E.
Nice restaurant to stop by. There's a pool table. Outdoor seating. Friendly service. Coffees for to go. We ordered pasta, fish and chips, lamb chops and burgers. I recommend the pasta. It's sooo good.
L.
I really appreciated the interior decor of the restaurant, it really suits the name and will give your visit a good atmosphere.
The food was very good and the prices quite decent. Unfortunately the restaurant had been affected by the flooding when we visited to the menu was limited and the kitchen staff looked quite hectic, however, the staff soldiered on and our food was delivered in a timely manner and completely fresh!
J.
Great stop off. Chips were delicious, whitebait was yummy. Inside has pool tables, dartboards and a cozy, country atmosphere.
p.
Stopped over for lunch on our way back to Queenstown. The place is adorned with hundreds of antlers. Probably not for everyone but shows the heritage of the place. We had a toasted sandwich and the beef burger. Both were nice.
k.
Wonderful, friendly staff, excellent service, AND awsome food
B.
We recently dropped into the Hard Antler Bar & Restaurant during a drive along State Highway 6 between Wanaka and Franz Josef, finding this to be a good lunch stop in the small town of Haast. Opening hours 11am to late daily.
Here you find a large indoor seating area with something of a hunter's lodge/pub atmosphere. There are large wooden tables, tellies playing sports and a great number of large deer antlers hanging from the ceiling.
For lunch, we had a whitebait sandwich and an order of fish and chips, both of which were just fine - tasted as expected. Meal was served timely and we found the lady taking order at the bar counter to be polite and friendly.
In the end, not a bad option for a lunch stop for those traveling along State Highway 6 and looking for a lunch stop around Haast. We'd consider dropping in again for another midday meal.
R.
Great staff terrible pineapple and cheese toated sandwich buy smaller tins of pineapple so you can throw it out instead of fridge ageing. Other food not too bad big slab tables .
N.
This stop was exactly what we needed. It was spacious enough so that our baby could stretch after a long car ride and we could grab a spot in the corner. We got the venison nachos, which were good sized. I also got a hot chocolate to warm up.
T.
Few of the staff r quite expression-less. Probably had a hard day. Anyway, the food is ok. The chicken burger is a bit too hard for my taste. Good environment though.
E.
Drop by to grab a quick lunch between the journey Wanaka and Fox glacier. The antlers hanged around were impressive.
Ordered the whitebait dish and it was something quite different for me. Staffs were friendly.
e.
The food was out the gate delicious. The Venison&Pork sausages were ON. Would 10/10 happily eat there every night. Servings were worth every dollar 👌🏽
C.
Had a great dinner sat outside on the sunny deck. Staff were super friendly – will definitely go back next time I’m in Haast!
L.
Yummy food and good decor! I also enjoyed the notice board about local legends :)
C.
Great very large meals too big but very nice with extensive menu
G.
Popped in on way to the glacier. I ordered cheses toast which was good and some coffee. Coffee was alright but that's understandable given it's a beer spot. The place is cool with ample seating. There are fake deer heads hanging on the wall so not really a spot for hardcore animal lovers.
A.
Food was ok, to be fair it was around about 3 pm on a week day.
Service was good.
Flys were enjoyable
Wasn’t unreasonably priced.
Every thing else in town was closed. But if you are looking around , save the time and go here first.
L.
Great place. Staff very friendly gave me precious tips from the around places to visit. They suggested us to try the lamb. Perfect choice. Excellent choise. Cold beer, good options and price.
A.
Enjoyed the whole experience, the lovely tall barman who makes you feel very welcome, food was so good, accommodating with options when they didn’t have something.
O.
Food was tasty as and all came out together, didn't have to wait long at all either. Loved all the Stag Heads hanging up everywhere. Recommend stopping here
J.
Food was average. Service was great. Might order a whole stag next time I'm there.
D.
Garlic bread and fishburger were very tasty and the fries was not covered with oil as it sometimes happens. They were ideal and crunchy.
M.
We follow the LP Book here. The space is really cool that full of deer display. The whitebait is awesome that everyone should try it. Fish and chips is not bad.
T.
A beautiful cosy place that comes in your way between Wanaka to Fox/Franz Joseph glaciers. Their Antler beef burger was flavorful, cheesy garlic bread was delicious and tomato cheese toast was simple and nice. With lovely interiors, live music, pretty views and a bar inside as well; this cafe placed in small town of Haast gave the best comfy meal I had in my 2 weeks NZ trip.
M.
We had a great lunch here in this quirky but cool establishment. Loved the blue cod.
M.
Great place the stop and enjoy some good kiwi hearty food.
Great service, yummy food in large portions. Highly recommend.
C.
Great food and friendly staff. No long waits on a meal even when they were really busy.
J.
Great service and friendly staff, venison burger was delicious, as well as the rest of the tucker we had for tea
I.
a restaurant on route and the only place in the wide area to have dinner. The food is ok and the drinks are good. The staff is friendly.
J.
Great service with a decent pub feed. They have a courtesy coach to top it off.
H.
The most genuinely lovely staff I've ever encountered, super helpful and welcoming. Awesome chips too!
L.
Relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, interesting decor.
They were happy to accommodate gluten Free diet and the steak was cooked perfectly.
The gravy on my husbands meal looked amazing but I didn't risk trying any.
We didn't think the price was expensive for the quality of food.
A.
Quality seafood platter, a bit pricey but ok for the location. Easily made for 2!
C.
Great feed, we had the seafood platter for two and couldn't finish it
A.
Warm friendly atmosphere and decent food. The toasted sandwiches were nice - as was the apple crumble, but the soup was a little bland and didn't taste fresh.
Y.
Good place for brunch in the town!
J.
Good place to eat. The whitebait sandwich was yummy. Pumpkin soup was good.
A.
Fantastic food! Our plan had been to grab something quick and cheap at a supermarket, but by the time we came to haast the general store was closed, leaving us with this as our only option for dinner. We had the lamb shanks and bangers and mash and even though this was more expensive than we had planned it was worth it. Nice family atmosphere and friendly staff on top of the good food made this a very happy diversion from our plans.
C.
Enjoyed lamb shanks in a comfortable atmosphere. Pricey restaurant but lack of choice in the area. Also a bar snacks service and full drinks menu.
Idea would be to share a meal with the buffet option .
K.
Good pub meal...good service. It was pretty busy the night we were there, so obviously a popular place
C.
We stopped in Haast for lunch on our way to Queenstown. The meal at the Hard Antler.was lovely and service was great.
F.
Great "blokey" pub. Beaut food and great service. I really enjoyed my visit there.
S.
Excellent burgers! And beautiful spot for lunch on a sunny day. Definitely will be back.
S.
Stopped for lunch here. Just had a toasted sandwich and coffee really nice. Lovely outdoor area to sit in the sun.
A.
Nice service, cold beer an burger was well presented thank u
N.
Had dinner here this evening. I ordered the steak and my husband ordered the ribs. Both were outstanding. Big servings. Friendly staff and great food. Lovely atmosphere and decor.
J.
Big portions for normal price. Good food, staff were great, with good yarns. Good kiwi pub.
S.
Their signature burger is half the size of the fish one and you save only like $2 not really worth. Definitely go for the fish one seems a way better deal. Coffee was quite burnt too. The decor was nice and overall it can be very good with some adjustments in the kitchen.
S.
Friendly staff & great service
Enjoyed our meal immensely
A.
Great atmosphere, fantastic staff & delish food.
J.
Magnificent bar tables worth a look. Friendly staff.
R.
Awesome crew at bar. Great fish and chips. Was here 15 years ago and it is still just as great.
A.
Nice place for a delicious lunch. Thank you Darcy!
J.
Quite simply amazing food.
Great service.
n.
Bar and restaurant with amazing interiors with full of deer antlers, with really awesome food and beer.Must stop place in Haast.
M.
Great fish & chips and cold beer!
A.
Great food, service and atmosphere
c.
Lovely relaxing environment,lovely refreshments,with a lovely meal
L.
Great selection of beer on tap. Had some good fun at karaoke night. However, the ribs we're disappointing and looked more like a pile of bones than ribs. I recommend choosing the seafood basket instead.
D.
Friendly staff, & cool atmosphere if your a country kinda person. The food is big servings, and it’s my no 1 hangout when I’m in Haast!
R.
We came here for dinner and breakfast as were staying at the Heartland Haast Hotel next door. The dinner was fine, a bit basic and some mains were around $35 which seemed expensive. The breakfast was not good. We had the light continental combo which was coffee or tea, juice, toast or cereal for $10 per person. The coffee was instant coffee and you were only allowed one hot drink, even though the room had unlimited hot drinks on offer. Toast was budget white bread and the cereal was cornflakes. The juice never came.
A.
Excellent. Staff were exceptionally friendly, whitebait fritters were sublime and the decor took my husband's breath away. Should be a 'must visit' for hunters on holiday.
A.
Good Food ! Try the Fries Sea Food Menus
S.
Really bad atmosphere and food was deplorable, some random guy yelled at us saying we could leave whenever we wanted.
Update: we went back for some whitebait fritters and the first time we came, we must have seen it on a bad day cause today the food was nice, nobody was rude and service was quick
K.
Expensive but in the middle of no where, it’s decent. Large spot. NO WIFI as of March 2018!
R.
Great whitebait fritters and excellent new barmaid
G.
The venison burger was so good.
Boys had chicken burger and nachos.
Plates were empty.
Well worth a stop.
R.
Only stopped for a coffee , very good service and very good coffee. Be aware there is no EFTPOS (when we were there) with cash needed. No fault of the Hard Antler, just the tyranny of being in Haast.
J.
Awesome back country pub in Haast. Fire was roaring when we arrived and the staff were super friendly. Ordered a jug of cider, which was only $17.00. We ordered a venison casarole and the ribs from the dinner menu. The prices were reasonable, and the portions were huuuge! Ribs were probably one of the best i've ever eaten. We then ordered a sticky date pudding. Was pretty cheap for a dessert, only cost $12.00. Out came this massive portion! Had to share with my partner, and we were both stuffed by the end. Ambience and food were 5/5, especially for a place in the middle of nowhere. Would definitely stop in Haast again to eat here.
A.
Great carbohydrate feed! Nice and friendly service. Good pit stop.
C.
Felt a bit like a western saloon, almost like every group of customers had a whole episode of Bonanza going on, but in the nicest way possible.
Staff were good, not too intrusive, just pleasingly attentive.
Food was seriously nice! Huge portions that we battled heroically to finish 🤗
J.
The night we called in it was very busy. We decided to order our food to go. The meals were great and the service was very quick. The bar staff were very friendly. Would recommend stopping here on your way through Haast.
R.
One of the best burgers I've ever had! The bun was soft and the fish was delicate and perfectly battered. The tartare sauce and pickles were the perfect complement to the fish. Delicious!
Y.
Good place to have food and the scone in the morning is one of the best since I was in NZ (for 4 years)
D.
Nice place to stop for food along the way from Wanaka to the glaciers.
D.
Good pub grub, friendly service
M.
Stopped in for a late lunch, fish burger was great, fresh fish. Chips cooked to perfection.
I.
We just pit stopped for lunch on our way to the glaciers. This place was really nice, easy to access with great food and drink options. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating with a very social smoking section. All the staff were lovely.
D.
Brilliant bar and restaurant. Super friendly staff and awesome food. We had the local speciality, whitebait, for a starter and it was really good. For mains we had the venison (which was prepared beautifully) and the spare ribs. This place is a gem in this rather remote town and definitely worth a visit if you’re passing through or staying the night.
R.
The ambiance was great and the beer was cold. The fish burger was delicious and well cooked. The fries weren't real good and the meal was overpriced. But the staff and service was great
C.
Well the plated food was good, chips from the buffet weren't though. Our dinners were warming and filling. Ambience was what you'd expect from a restaurant/ bar, with pool tables, antlers on the walls etc. fairly quiet on a week day.
H.
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, good salads. Whitebait was quite good, however at $28 I would expect fresh, crisp chips and properly cooked potatoes. Dessert was really good though!
S.
Really nice setting..great food
R.
What a surprise. We chose this place to have dinner at because the menu looks cheaper than the other restaurant in Haast. We really enjoyed the whole experience in here. Th food was yummy and affordable. There were many interesting things to look at around the inside of the restaurant. There were pools and darts for adults to play. While kids were not happy that they couldn‘t play these activities, they discovered that they had kids games to play with. Everyone in the family enjoyed the night.
J.
Warm welcome, great atmosphere . Heartly serving of Sticky Date Pudding. Great place to stop.
P.
Nice local hotel.
Food was great and staff very pleasant
A.
Had a great meal, nice stop on the road.
S.
Stopped in to Haast around lunch time and stumbled across The Hard Antler. Their blue cod fish & chips was really solid. Fried to perfection and the fish was fresh. Would recommend stopping by if you are passing through the area and looking to grab a bite!
J.
Popped in for breakfast and was very impressed with the bacon and eggs + coffee. Perfect location to refuel the body before or after driving through the mountains.
J.
Coffee was ok cool looking pub
J.
Food was delicious - we had the seafood basket which had muscle, scallops, prawn, fish and chips. Rated a 4/5 - although I understand it is a hunting town the taxidermy of the deers was quite weird. I feel like it's a bar for the locals to go to more than for tourists.
A.
Excellent. Staff were exceptionally friendly, whitebait fritters were sublime and the decor took my husband's breath away. Should be a 'must visit' for hunters on holiday.
S.
Really bad atmosphere and food was deplorable, some random guy yelled at us saying we could leave whenever we wanted.
Update: we went back for some whitebait fritters and the first time we came, we …
M.
Nice local pub, didn't eat but the meals looked good
R.
Lovley blue cod meal, great service and atmosphere. Staff happy and friendly..
J.
Great place to stop for lunch. The venison nachos are delicious. Warm pub, family friendly and nice staff.
M.
The hard antler....excellent breakfast, great service and the best coffee ever, definitely recommend.
K.
Awesome staff. Delicious 😋 😋 😋 lunch. Locals are very very welcoming!!!
J.
Great service and great meals
T.
Great service, lovely coffee, awesome decor and the boys loved the pool table. Best place we have stopped on our 2 week journey Thanks.
M.
Food here was very nice, but very expensive, expect to pay way over the norm. No much choice either. However, everywhere else was closed, so it is eat here or go hungry.
L.
Stopped by for just a coffee in an ice cream and it reminded me of my home Alberta Canada. Very quiet for a friday though. Stop here if your a hunting nut! Nice staff.
M.
Solid kiwi pub fare and friendly staff. Can't ask for much more!
Really appreciate they're actually open late for food vs "kiwi late" (open past 5pm). Helps when you're driving through in the evening and everything is closed by 6pm.
A.
A great feed and cool hunting trophies to check out.
J.
Haarst is in the middle of nowhere and here's this great pub with great atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to kick back and eat after a long day's travel.
V.
The place was very busy as being Xmas holidays but the food came fast and nicely done ,prices were expensive compared to other places we had stopped so be prepared but the service made up for it.
S.
Great service, delicious takeaway coffee and hot chips. Love the interior with the gorgeous wooden furniture. Plenty of parking available.
J.
For me as a vegetarian going into a pub restaurant with dead animal parts hanging from the walls, it is a bit like going into the past where people hunt and kill animals and parade their heads, antlers etc as trophies and hang them on the walls. It's a game of thrones mediavel mentality but I think maybe represents the mentality of some of the locals. However vegetarian food was on the menu and not bad and the beer was good....the place is curious to say the least
M.
This place has a fun atmosphere, you will especially like it if you enjoy hunting. The food is fairly plain bistro-style food. It is close to the main road so it gets very busy at peak times and there can be a significant wait.
j.
Great filling food at a good price...very busy pub but also friendly
J.
The breakfast we had were awesome hubby had the big breakfast and I tried the French pancakes so yummy we were just passing through so on the we found this place recommend it
F.
Lovely meal great cosy place
M.
While driving from Greymouth through Franz Joseph to Queenstown on the west coast of the south island, we happened upon The Hard Antler. We were craving a good burger but they were out of beef. They offered venison but my wife wasn't going there, lol (for the record, I would have but she would have flipped)). The waitress offered a chicken sandwich and OMG it was the best chicken we've ever had!
C.
As there are not many alternative options, the prices here are a bit higher. I had fish & chips, which was alright, but my friend's venison lasagne was burnt quite bad at the bottom and didn't seem to be too fresh. Staff was very friendly. If there ever was free Wi-Fi, it is gone now. They charge you per 30 minutes, which is probably a good business as there is no cell reception.
M.
Friendly staff and fast service. Food was excellent, compliments to the chef. Great home made soup and deserts. Main meal comes with salad bar and choice of sides. Best place to have dinner in haast
T.
Nice place to eat when passing through or staying the night. Busy and staff are friendly. Roast veggies are a must! The cod was good too.
s.
Excellent food and service. Friendly staff. Chef does an amazing job seemingly single handed, producing good value tasty food. Can recommend the roast lamb and venison .
D.
Surprisingly great little spot if you’re looking for a break on the drive to Franz Josef. Blue cod fish and chips were great and coffee was on point. Friendly service too!
R.
They are the best there ribs are amazing
Well worth the stop, very nice relaxed invorment with excellent staff.
Food was good price and good size ,mum enjoyed her fish
I'm Woodie and will definitely stop there each time we go to wanaka it's well worth that extra millage to go to for a feed
M.
Great steak just the way I like it medium rare with a bit of blood coming out
D.
We had driven in from Hokitika and stopped at the Hard Antler after driving past all the other cafes. We had a good feeling about the cafe as it was adnored with deer antlers and trophy on the walls.
New Zealander should celebrate the fact you have great deer and wild pigs.
We ordered the soup of day and the sandwich of white bait,
As expected the service was swift and efficient we had our meals both delicious.
We left to drive to Arrowtown both satisfied and ready to over take the damn Maui and Britz mobile vans that insist on driving at 60 km per hr on 100 km hr roads.
R.
The service was really good. The outdoor seating area refreshingly cool and comfortable. The food, delicious!
T.
Good food and great service. If you are going through to Haast, go hungry and order the double lamb shank ... you will finish them both they are that good.
s.
Great place for a drink. Unfortunately we didn't stay for a meal but wish we had when we saw them come out
D.
Came across this gem whilst driving back to queenstown from fox glacier. Ribs were epic. Good serving size and good value. Quirky decor, has darts, pool and kid friendly toys.
J.
Great place to stop for lunch. The venison nachos are delicious. Warm pub, family friendly and nice staff.
c.
Excellent home style lamb shank
A.
Was the only place open for ages. Very greasy food but the sticky date was delicious. Was good but it took too long to get our food. Lucky we werent in a hurry. The lady did apologize though.
M.
Great meal, friendly staff and fire was a nice touch
C.
Not much else in town so good to have this facility. Very friendly staff and a good selection at the bar. We did not eat here but the buffet dinner looked great.
K.
Despite the death room feel with all the hanging antlers and mounted deer heads, the music was really good and staff was very friendly. Apple crumble is great!! Highly recommended.
S.
friendly staff, good food which didn't take long to come out. husband loved the decorations
P.
This place rocks great staff The whitebait same6 are among the best coffee great nothing but a enjoyable interlude
R.
Good atmosphere lovely ppl. True Southern Style Pub with good booze, wifi! Big thanks to Jackie, Tim, Mareth, The Chefs working hard in the hot kitched and all the others for feeding and watering me while I worked in the area for a couple days. Word of advice to those visiting. Take insect repelent if sitting outside in summer. Sandflys are a pain in the region.
P.
Really enjoyed a family meal here, it was a busy night for them but the staff were friendly and the meal was beautiful! Thank you.
M.
Nice local pub, didn't eat but the meals looked good
G.
Good fish and chips, takeaway beer and the lady behind the bar had a great sense of humour!
D.
Decorations are not of the sort you see everyday. Quite characteristic. Seen customers having burgers and looked good. Herbal tea was alright.
E.
Great place to stop over when travelling between Wanaka and Fox Glacier.
Food is great, their steak with peppercorn sauce is fantastic!
F.
Can't complain about this place. It's not aiming for fine dining but what it does aim for it hits the spot! Plenty of beers, solid food, pool table, TV with sports, loads of space inside and out, darts and helicopter tours right next door!
N.
I would say quickest meal service we have ever had and food was great
S.
Great traditional local pub with great service, food and coffee
J.
Clean, great meals and service, beer was nice and cold.
S.
Great food, really appreciated super salads and lovely cod.
Much better value and quality than in England 😊
S.
Quick service with the meals. Staff weren't overly friendly. Nice meals. Little pricey for what we had.
M.
Loved there food and drink, lot of history on walls in the pub
V.
🍻 good as gold. We got to try date pudding with ice cream, that was really nice!
s.
Good food and portion sizes. We thought the burgers was too crisp and falafel lacked flavour.
B.
The Hard antler is a lively place with a good vibe and quality food, the blue cod I had was great as was the garlic bread. Recommend for anyone staying in Haast.
M.
The hard antler....excellent breakfast, great service and the best coffee ever, definitely recommend.
A.
A very nice place for a beer and a meal. Top looking food that's not cheap but it's the location I suspect..
R.
Lovley blue cod meal, great service and atmosphere. Staff happy and friendly..
