We loved it! Great food, the cheese, bacon and onion pierogis were bloomin’ amazing. The choice of wines that are all the same price were great - choices from Spain and Italy as well as Aussie and NZ. The owner is a character and is great to have a chat to. This place is a great restaurant and we will definitely be back next time we are in Hanmer.

omg, the food experience here is to die for, they can do gluten-free options too. The craftsmanship and expertise of creating the dishes are absolutely out of this world.. I would definitely up the star level to a 10 if I could.

Lovely restaurant. Lots of different type of dumpling to try. Unfortunately there is no mixed plate that we can have to try each type of dumpling. The dumplings were great, but the salads were the highlight.

Small popular restaurant, would probably be best to book. Speciality is dumplings, menu is tailored to highlight various speciality dumpling. Food is complimented by various condiments and salad. Chef owner is friendly and funny. A unique meal which I really enjoyed.

MK is a brilliant restaurant. The dumplings are fantastic. Even better is the desert. To top it of they play great music. If you are in Hanmer Springs you have to eat here. Will gladly recommend and come again. See if you can work out what the MK stands for. Many thanks MK it was the best meal I have had outside Wellington.

Very interesting restaurant, all the items on the menu are pierogi 🥟; both main and dessert. We ordered 3 mains and 2 desserts. The favor of sides and presentation are fine dine quality. However the hero ingredients, dumplings, is inferior compare to the sides. Overall, it is a incredible tasty meal, highly recommended if you go to Hanmer Springs

This is the BEST restaurant in hanmer springs. The quality of food is out of this world, the presentation is fantastic. The owner was lovely and made us feel at home. I highly recommend! Don't eat elsewhere.. just eat here.

The best restaurant I have ever visited in the whole of NZ. What a beautiful evening celebrating with family and friends. The food, care, presentation, service, premises, etc were A+. Pristine, worthy of being referred to as fine dining. Different to anything else I have seen in NZ. If you are in Hanmer Springs, you must try this family run establishment.

We had a fantastic time at MK. Food and service were top notch. The mains and desserts were amazing and beautifully presented. Sorry, no photo of my main - I couldn't wait to start eating, it looked so inviting. Same for the dessert but I restrained myself! A lovely restaurant and very popular place to dine in Hanmer, and we would highly recommend.

Amazing food, great staff, owner comes to your table to describe what you are eating. I got the empanada main and apple cinnamon dessert which was amazing. Good size meals and did I say amazing food. Highly recommended for a culinary experience. Also good red wine selection.

My wife and I have eaten at establishments such as "Dinner by Heston" in Melbourne and others of equal quality. MK Restaurant of Hanmer Springs is right up there. Stunning quality of food with flavour bursts to sing about. The attention to detail in the artistic presentation and the care taken to ensure you understand the direction of the culinary experience is second to none. The owner goes out of his way to ensure that you have been informed of the delightful choices available, delivers the delights and leaves you to enjoy. The wine recommendations are perfect matches for the food. This is a restaurant where you absolutely must have a desert - you would be cheating yourself if you didn't. On top of this, it is amazing value for the quality delivered. My wife and I would not hesitate to return. Booking essential - MK Restaurant is truly #1 in Hanmer.

The food is excellent and well prepared, and, even though much of it is consists of simple ingredients like cabbage, carrots, onions, apples, etc, it has many wonderful flavours and is beautifully presented . Additionally, the staff are attentive and friendly, plus we enjoy the owner who comes out of the kitchen to personally visit his customers. It is a warm environment with a personal touch and is perfect for date night. We stay in Hanmer on our birthdays every year just to experience MK. It is a gem of a place. I only wish it was closer.

OMG! What an amazing plate of flavours!! Somebody else commented about coming back and trying all the other dumpling dishes, I’d have to agree! We’ll worth the time to check this place out. You won’t be disappointed.

This was the best restaurant we have ever been to. It served amazing food at reasonable prices that looked like a work of art while being served by the most welcoming host. We were driven here by the good reviews of the restaurant since it has an average of 4.9 stars with 213 reviews (as of now) which I have personally never seen before either. The menu is simple but offering a wide variety of flavours mostly based on dumpling variations. The food was served looking like a piece of art with a variety of little sides which were individually explained by the chef himself. All these little sides had different and very complex flavours that made it a real experience. Since the main was so good we decided to also have desserts which were just as exceptionally well done. The host was one of the nicest people, too! He was so calm, patient and welcoming and explained any questions we had in detail. You could tell the food there was made and served with passion. I can only recommend this restaurant for anyone visiting Hanmer Springs, this is a must-do! I am so glad we gave it a try. If you are open to a new european/Asian mix cuisine, this is for you!

A destination restaurant in the heart of the south island. Outstanding adventures on the plate. Bright, beautiful bounty filled us to our limits! The staff fell over themselves to support one of our groups allergies. Everyone left happy and keen to return. Highly recommended!!! (Photos don't do it justice... every mouth full an intelligent explosion of flavour!)

Unbelievably tasty and gorgeous food. We’re welcomed by the staff as soon as we arrived, which catered to one of our parties allergy requests amazingly. The food was by far the most delicious I’ve ever had. The staff explained every detail on each plate and you could tell they loved food and loved the food they were putting in front of you. I will 100% be back again to try each and every dumpling on the menu!

genuinely great. presentation was michelin star worthy, with a kind and wonderful server to atend to all your food needs. also tasted amazing (duh) and a very impressive alcohol collection. if your popping by, I would advise you to stop by.

This is not a meal. It is AN EXPERIENCE. I cannot believe that I could find a restaurant of this quality in Hanmer. It is obvious that the owners love their job and food is their passion. This is like a degustation event but all on the one plate. Unbelievable.

Absolutely amazing, Michelin start quality! Mirek has created an incredible menu, we attempted to try a bit of everything as it all looked and smelt so good. The dumplings are delicious and the salad has so many unique flavours. Save room for the desserts!!

Ordered traditional pasties and my wife ordered gyoza wings. Both were enjoyable but the salads are amazing. The waitress carefully explained what everything was on the plate. Decided to try desert and shared it between us. We were not disappointed! At $17 I was not expecting too much but the plate that came out was a work of art. The only inedible on the plate was a glass for the pineapple sorbet with mango foam. Booking is essential as a lot of people were turned away while we were there. Will be going again.

If you are in Hanmer Springs, please do yourself a favour and have a meal here! This was one of the best dining experiences I've had. Such an interesting concept for a menu, and it has been impeccably put together. Every element on the plate was beautiful and delicious. Staff were warm, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Can't wait to go back next time we're in the area!

MK was the perfect food to start our holiday. It was the best food in the whole trip. Perfectly served . We were lucky to get in on Monday as they close Tuesday and Wednesday. In the days off they gather food to make the best conversation starters. Great eating too. The photos explain it best and the chief and waiter. Congratulations.

I wanted to do something special for my 60th and my son informed me of a restaurant in Hanmer. We booked ahead and good job we did. The food is something truly out of this world, never before have I been treated to culinary delights as I did last night. I would like to thank Mirek and Krytyna for making my night something to remember we will not hesitate to dine there again

WOW. I ordered Japanese dumplings, gluten free, and they were delicious, the veges on side were decorated on the plate perfect. The flavors were amazing. Then we got dessert and exquisite tastes and presentation was awesome. Thanks to the warm and friendly welcome, the explanation of food. I will definitely be back. A brilliant addition to the Hanmer food choice of restaurants.

Do NOT leave Hanmer Springs without eating here! Best kept secret ever.... I'm usually harsh with reviews, but I couldn't WAIT to brag on this place. Fantastic friendly staff, INCREDIBLE food, amazing price for what you get and everyone in the restaurant was talking to each other marvelling over the food and presentation. Kiwis aren't usually big on gushing or talking to strangers while eating, but everyone in there was blown away.

Such wonderful place for dinner. Food is yum, service is great, ambience is wonderful. It is morderenised dumplings but hasn't lost its roots. All the condiments on the plate complement the dumplings really well. Definitely a good pick for us to celebrate birthday.

Get the dessert! Such a creative concept and very well executed in a cozy location. The main course featured gourmet perogies and a delicious pickled salad. The desert was truly one of the great culinary experiences I've had. The chef/owner was extremely friendly and explained each creative dish. So glad we made the stop while in Hanmer Springs and the price was very good for the quality. We had two mains, wine and desert for less than $100 NZ. I’m going to try my best to describe the amazing experience my mate and I had this evening at MK Restaurant in Hanmer Springs. I’m certainly not a restaurant critic, but I think it’s important to make a good attempt to acknowledge greatness when you experience it. We decided to call ahead to make a booking for dinner this evening, and would recommend that others do the same. This restaurant is nothing short of exceptional. It’s a bit of a challenge to find, as Google Maps isn’t clear with the directions. If you’re walking from town, essentially, continue down Conical Hill Road until you see “The Village” shopping centre on your left hand side. This will be past the spa and most of the other restaurants in town. You’ll think you’re entering a residential area, but keep going. At night, the words “The Village” are lit up in blue neon. Take a left onto Chisholm Crescent and you will see them immediately on your left, directly across the street from Coriander’s Indian Restaurant. The first of my senses to be awakened upon opening the door was smell. The small restaurant smelled wonderful, somewhat of a warm curry scent. There was American Blues music playing in the background and the décor was modern and unassuming. We were greeted by a warm and soft-spoken gentleman named Mirek. He promptly seated us and presented the menu and drink choices, which were simple, but interesting. I was pleased that there were not a lot of complex things to look through. What stood out was the fact that Mirek takes an exceptional amount of pride in explaining what is on offer with the menu. He goes into great detail in what each of the choices are, and patiently allows you to ask questions. He’s got that sort of personality that tells you to just trust him, and spends a great deal of time with each table to make sure they are enjoying themselves. The meals arrived in about 15 minutes. Wow! They were exploding with aroma and colour. The arrangements are simply works of art! Mirek again took a few minutes to explain what the multiple ingredients on the plate were, and what to expect as far as taste. I had the Pelmeni-Traditional Russian Dumplings, which I am going to yearn for from this day forward. The flavours were all something simple that I had tasted before, but mixed together in a complex and unique way. Wow.. Wow.. Wow…….. I hate to admit it, but I drank every last drop of broth with my dumplings. Actually, I’m proud to admit it, they were amazing. My mate had the Gyoza Wings, which were huge and delicious! The desserts started to slowly roll out to other guests, which were also works of art. I’m not exaggerating, they are perfection on a plate. Loads of colours, textures, and tastes combine to provide another journey for the tastebuds. You will not go wrong with MK Restaurant. Come prepared to take your time, and let go of your preconceived ideas about what your dinner should be. Let Mirek take you on a journey and you will not be disappointed. 10/10 the best restaurant i have been to in quite a while. We went there for our work trip dinner and all we have to say is we had an amazing time! Such great service and fantastic food that is so unique and colorful and absolutely delicious. Thank you for a wonderful experience and we will definitely be back next time we visit hanmer.

No words to describe.. art on a plate..delicious food.. nice and relaxing music . I have been struggling to find a decent restaurant that serves Eastern European food in New Zealand, and here in Hanmer Springs I came across this gem that serves pilemeni (and other dumplings as well).. brought back a lot of childhood memories.. The plating of the dishes is an art on its own and the desert is delightful as well .

A Hanmer treasure, don’t miss it - great (and unique) food experience; but it’s the personal service that makes this place special.

This small restaurant serves absolutely wonderful food. A little piece of heaven on a plate. We only stayed in Hanmer Springs 2 nights but we enjoyed our first night so much , we went back for a second night to taste more of this wonderful food. The dumplings burst with flavour at every bite and are complemented by a wonderfully light pickle salad. The deserts are so beautiful to the eye and so delicious in the mouth. The great service from Mirek and his team makes this a perfect place to eat. So if you are visiting New Zealand, make sure you visit this restaurant in Hanmer Springs. You owe yourself this little piece of heaven.

One word.... Wow! This restaurant is next level amazing! From the fabulous service (even the chef comes out to talk to you! Not just once but several times!) to the delicious food that looks like art... Everything is absolutely epic! We had the best night here... Can't wait to go back!

What an incredible meal! Our very best in New Zealand so far. The chef is a real artist. Our favourite was the perogies - but leave room for pudding - wow! We also loved the flavoured water and amazing pickles, not to mention the decor. Credit cards are ok too.

Wow pretty much sums it up. The restaurant was able to cater for a party of 18 and the service was above exceptional. It was great to see how passionate everyone is at making the experience memorable and it definitely is a place I would return to. In relation to the owners, it was so refreshing for them to interact with us and to top it off, my step daughter who turned 21, she was surprised with a surprise dessert which she described as being devine. Thank you to the 2 young female server's who were fantastic and thank you to MK Restaurant for a wonderful evening. Definitely not your typical standard restaurant.

One of the best restaurants I have eaten at. The flavours in the food was fantastic and so beautifully displayed. Don't let the meal prices dissuade you, what you get here is a great dish and a bit of an experience. There's a range of various dumplings that come with a wide variety of different salad items. They fill you without needing to undo your pants button. Even if you're full you owe it to yourself to get a dessert also, even if to share. Well worth the visit if you're in Hanmer.

Best meal of my life (49 years of eating experience) EVER! And only $30 for this main. The flavours were mindbogglingly good combinations. 15 outta 10.

We had a fantastic meal at mk. Amazing flavour and texture combinations and all artistically arranged on the plate made for a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience. With excellent table service and prices you would pay for an average pub meal this boutique restaurant punches way above its competitors. This is a must do when in hanmer springs. Book ahead as it is very popular.

What an insanely beautiful and delicious meal. We couldn’t fault the food or the service. We dined with 3 young kids (aged 4-10). The menu catered to the whole family and everyone absolutely loved their meals. A special place that we hope to visit again in the future. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

Most amazing meal we’ve had in ages. Best hidden surprise ever, tucked away in Hanmer. Every mouthful was a taste sensation. Brings “ dumplings” to a whole new level. Not sure what was highlight as everything Was , from the amazing host/ chef , mouthwatering description of food to the food itself. The dishes looked like a work of art and every mouthful backed it up. Tip.. make room for dessert and even if you don’t have room order dessert.

I can't share any more words than previous reviews to do this restaurant justice. AMAZING. We've paid three times the price for "fine dining" and it didn't come close to this. Have to add, our waitress Cila was sensational. If we didn't live in the North Island, we'd be regulars!

What an incredible meal we had at MK. We were met and seated by the wonderful owner/chef. He went out of his way to accommodate one of our group that has numerous dietary restrictions. The menu is very clever. The presentation was amazing and the flavours of all the components were delicious. Considering the standard the price was modest. We would highly recommend MK if you are open to trying a new food experience.

This place is a well kept secret. The menu is awesome and dessert is another level of amazing. The staff are great and it was a great evening. Music was good and didn't compete with table conversation. Will be back on our next visit.

My husband and I have been traveling around NZ on our honeymoon and one thing we have been impressed with is the food. Everything is so fresh and all sourced locally, even eating an apple- it was like I'd never tasted an apple before, they are so good! But tonight we had dinner at MK and it was the best food we think we've ever tasted, it is more than just dumplings and the photos do not do it justice. The owner/chef came out to greet us and seat us, explain the dish and have a good chat and a laugh. The food was beyond incredible. If anyone ever gets a chance to drive through Hanmer Springs NZ, do yourself a favour and make sure you go to MK restaurant. I would give it 6 stars out of 5 if I could.

To my own suprise, I did not enjoy MK restaurant. I was recommended the restaurant from a family member who had rave reviews and the internet agreed! Looking at the menu - I had my doubts. Hugely expensive 'dumplings' (perogies) with uninspired flavours. I walked in hoping to be wrong. My main gripes: 1. The perogies were the least enjoyable part of the main dish. They came with a variety of pickled items and salads which were more varied and enjoyable. 2. The price. Maybe $10 less per main and I still wouldn't have enjoyed it, but at least I wouldn't have felt ripped off. 3. The dessert looked great but lacked any real cohesion and the flavours were hit and miss. A single perogie was lost amongst a sea of sorbets, foam, and candied sugar. I'll give MK restaraunt a thanks for a unique meal. But unfortunately the food was not to my taste.. Service: 3/5 Average Food Flavour: 2/5 Disappointing Price Point: 2/5 Expensive Uniqueness: 4/5 Visually interesting and a variety of sides worth trialing.

Its very artful and we were surprised how affordable it was....they should charge more. You need to book... but the website makes that super easy. Needs 10 stars 👍😁

Wow!! This is an entirely different eating experience. Totally unique, a cavalcade of different flavors all of which combine to create a dining experience that will have you looking forward to your next visit. If you have the opportunity to try this restaurant, do. You won't regret it. Great helpful staff. Reasonable prices. Wine list, best to not mention the wine list. But you went for the food, right?

My wife & I had an awesome meal here & rate this as the best meal out we’ve ever had, period! The Owner was very welcoming, the menu was interesting, the meals were world class & the presentation fantastic, the wine was lovely (& beautifully complemented the food), the dessert was amazing & again the presentation was amazing. I researched restaurants in Hanmer on Trip Advisor prior to booking and this restaurant turned back the best results by far. So I had to see if the reviews and accompanying pictures met expectations and boy did they exceed! Not only was the food full of delicately and thoughtfully blended combinations but it was art on a plate. The owner is genuinely passionate about his craft and took his time to explain every element. We were the last couple left in the restaurant and he put the closed sign up and then brought us out an extra experimental dessert to try, and some beautiful port to enjoy with it - on the house! Such an interesting man who creates a journey with his food. My partner said it was the best dining experience of her life. I'm sorry we never asked his name because we will talk about this night for years to come. A true goldmine of restaurants. Oh. and make sure you order dessert.

I have no words for the dessert other than ,"do it", even I'd you aren't a dessert person just do it. If you are a wine drinker let the chef guide you, he knows what he's doing.

Beautiful food, wonderful service. Be prepared to eat flavours you might not normally choose yourself, it’s a chef-lead foodie adventure! Even going just for dessert is well worth it.

I now understand why MK has such high ratings, the food is cooked from the heart and it shows. So many well cooked elements on the plate, definitely not something you cook at home or get in most restaurants. Intimate setting, great wine selection and knowledge to help you choose well based on your dinner me great staff. One of the best dining experiences I have had and had caused me to write this review (I seldom write reviews). Just when you thought the experience was over, dessert turns up, and omg! The only disappointment was that they were not open the following night so we could experience more from the menu so we will have to visit Hanmer again for that reason!

Absolutely delicious dumplings. One of the best meals I've ever had and so cheap!. The chef came round the tables and clearly he's thought long and hard about dumplings plus he has an amazing varied foodie background. Service was fantastic too. The kids' meals came out very quickly and they have three different types of spa water on tap. We will come back next time we are in Hanmer Springs. Highly recommended. Book ahead!

All we were told by our local friends when they recommended we should pay visit was that it was very good... From the second we walked into this place - we could tell that this was not your normal dining experience. It started with great banter with the front of house, though I was the butt of it for the early exchanges. It continued with the choice of wines. The menu revealed that the experience was going to be a gastronomical display of dumplings from primarily eastern European cuisines but also from around the world. I elected for the Russian version - that come with borsht and sauerkraut. And to finish was the desert. A symphony of sight and taste. Overall - a taste sensation does not begin to describe the entire experience

I could not thank the MK team enough! My wife and I managed to get a table there on our anniversary l and could not be happier! Perfect ambience, perfect food, perfect night! From the mouth-watering food that was as astounding as it was delicious, to the atmosphere created by the wonderful waitstaff that made us laugh and feel very welcome, we had a perfect night and WILL BE BACK. Absolutely wonderful dinner. Now one of our top favourite meals we’ve ever had in our lifetime 😍😍 After being warmly welcomed, we went for the Japanese and Russian dumpling option. Very hard to choose as everything sounded delicious on the menu. Both yum. The real amazing part was the vegetable sides. Never have I seen my vegetable-hating partner enjoy eating veggies so much before! And the dessert is to die for. A must do even if you need to share with your dining partner 😂😍😍

Simply the best restaurant in Hanmer. My second visit and MK did not disappoint. From the fabulous FOH host, beautiful wine glasses, easy listening music...….and the food.....just amazing!!! Sensational food generally. The main course was an interesting assortment of many flavors- a taste experience. I don't usually do dessert but the main was so good I thought I should try - and I think the dessert was the best I have ever had in my 65 years on planet earth. Remarkably reasonable prices. Put this place on your bucket list!!

Wow this place is amazing, excellent service, such a great host! The pierogi were next level delicious. The pelmini (Russian dumplings) were also a taste sensation. The side salad was a masterpiece, if that's possible... So many flavours and ingredients, lots of thought and attention. Make sure to try book ahead, it's getting popular!

I wasn't sure what to expect from a Polish Italian chef in Hanmer Springs, New Zealand, but was delighted with the meal. An intimate restaurant where you are likely to have the chef deliver your meal and explain it to you. Very highly recommend it, and very reasonable price for the quality of the meal. You may need to book in busy weekends or holidays. I'll be going back.

Wow. I'm blown away with the beautiful and delicious meal I just ate at MK. The combination of flavours was fantastic, and the awesome presentation made me feel quite privelidged to be experiencing their wonderful food. This combined with a very warm welcome and excellent prices made this my new favourite restaurant. Wow this place is amazing. You have to come here when you are in hanmer. The food is outstanding. The dessert was a work of art and something you would find in the very best restaurants in big cities. It was great to have different styles of dumplings as well. The Russian dumplings were fantastic.

The owner was such a nice and friendly person and we talked quite a bit about the dishes. My husband believes it was the best meal he had in a restaurent for a long time. i enjoyed the desert the most, what an effort, everything was made from scratch and well balance and not too sweet. Amazingly beautiful resturant with some mind blowing flavours. Please ensure you listen to the chef as all elements are explained to what is on your plate and what matches with what. We had japanese dumplings and russan beef. WOW is all I can say with both dishs!

Delightfully different! A nice range of dumplings from around the world, presented with beautiful salsa and pickles that are more Japanese in style. A wonderful compliment! Much classier than the usual takeaway dumpling places. Nice service and alcohol is available.

Personally I didn't know of this restaurant, it's actually some time since I have spent more than part of a day in Hanmer Springs. This restaurant is in a newer part and I was totally surprised of what's on offer. Honestly, when I saw 'dumplings' on the menu I thought I knew what was to come. But what's on offer is fully unexpected. And the presentation of the accompanying salads is unreal. My biggest regret is not taking a picture of the plate. It's a must go, service was warm and friendly too with a detailed explanation of what was served. It was like fine dining but without all the hoo-haa. Recommended for sure!!

We have had 2 meals now at MK restaurant. Both of those experiences were exceptional. You can tell when a restaurant is run well even before the food arrives. Ticks all the boxes. It's new and small, I'm glad we got to experience it before it gets super crowded because it will.

Amazing food and service, the food is to die for, the most unique delicious dining experience ever, here for our 5th wedding anniversary and a place for a special night out, owner MK presented us with complimentary champagne when he found out it was our anniversary, thanks MK resturant, definitely be back and don't forget to book ahead. As an Aucklander I found this restaruant a real eye opener, not only was the food as good as any top restaurant in Auckland it came without the eye watering prices! Definitely recommend this Restaurant for anyone seeking a fine dining experience, would be worth the drive up from Christchurch! (Especially for the Desserts!)

OMG This little resturant is hidden away from the steak chips & beer battered fish. Mains expertly cooked, home made, healthy light meals. Fresh dumblings, well balanced in taste and colour. As for desserts! You have to try this out! Full blown toffee glass bubble with fresh puree tasting fruit inside! Chocolate egg casing with cream. Freshly made fruit dumpling. Excellent service. This is one of the few restaurants I have left determined to return again, and again .. until I work my way right through the menu - food, service and ambience all hard to beat .. then top off with a passionate chef who welcomes every guest as if they are family and you have the recipe for a special night out.
